the straightener is used in order to seal the keratin protein into your hair. Without the heat from the straightener, the treatment won't stay in the hair. sealing the protein into the hair is what keeps hair straight even after it is wet
the vapors don't affect your scalp or the hair. but they are bad to breathe in
