Just wanted to say, NameMC has clarified that they WILL continue to display name history from the info they've saved over the years. They're also going to have a rough estimate of future name history (because they aren't getting the info from the API, they have to check for name changes on their own). HOWEVER, what I mentioned about being able to use the GDPR to get your info removed isn't necessary; they'll be allowing you to hide your name history at will. Some of these problems (e.g accountability and sniping transfer I believe) will still remain, but it's a very good start to improving!

This change could mean random 3 letter names may actually have some value in a few years, because they will be a lot harder to snipe.

@@Zakkina Good luck with monitoring 10s of thousands of Minecraft accs. This is gonna be a nightmare even with enough proxies.
This also means that every prename or a low namechange amount account will lose its value considerably.
At the same time, every other account will rise in value.
Essentially every account will become a prename now :P

Ngl, the only thing that is making me happy about this is that I have an account where I’ve been wanting to transfer the name for a while. When this happens I can probably do it feeling a lot better about myself getting the ign while making sure I have the exact time a day I did it

this could mean more privacy and more anonyminity. This is both good and bad. Bad for finding players and people you used to know. But good for ditching a bad rep someone could have had and starting a new minecraft life.

The downfall of Minecraft *_MIGHT_* have started, the 1.17 divide into .18 and .19 was one thing, and it was sort of understandable. They also then made the chat filter reporting, which also angered people. This will affect one of the sizeable parts of the community. Mojang shouldn't update and add stuff the community doesn't want.

I am very happy for this. There are many names on my account that I really don't want public for multiple reasons such as doxxing and harassment. People have done stupid things in the past, I know I have (Talking to you, 2017 me), so now all my past names are hated by many many people. I couldn't get it removed since i didn't have info on the credit card payment for my account (Since i apparently need that to remove name history).

I am actually really happy about this. Of course, what I experienced is a very rare case, so I might not have the right to have an opinion about this,
but I have been stalked by a girl that I rejected 4 to 5 years ago. That stalking is still on-going. It is very difficult for me to find a new server or anything to play on because if she or someone in her cancel-culture circle discovers that I changed my name, she'll find me again and will just harass me and spread absolutely abhorrent lies about me. (And there's absolutely no way I'm buying a new account, since I have capes etc on mine plus it's a legacy account). I'll keep it very brief but she basically destroyed my entire online life (luckily just my online life) just by scanning through my name history (some names are names I used on other platforms such as social media or different games) So me personally, am extremely happy about this lol.
So in my case, I wouldn't really appreciate if let's say NameMC just says fuck you to me and keeps showing the names I used on my account.
I’m happy with this change too. I think user privacy is more important than name history, as interesting as name history may be.
same, I'm transgender and my namemc has my old male name in it and when i tell people im a girl they don't trust me after they check my namemc

No, of course you have the right for an opinion about this, everyone does! But yeah, I definitely understand that, people are absolutely insane and that's one of those niche cases where hidden name history is absolutely 100% vital. I just posted a comment about this, but NameMC is going to continue showing name history, HOWEVER you do have the option to turn it off, so happy stalker-losing!
I think they should have a toggle option, whether you want your name history to be private or not, they are just splitting the community at this point.

I think that this is a pretty good change. I think that sniping will be way harder, but I think that sniping and the community around it is really toxic.
I can understand that. It definitely depends who's sniping and what period it's from though, because while some sniping communities have been extremely toxic and shady, others have been a bunch of people just experimenting with the API and doing cool research and having fun.

There should definitely be an opt-in to enable name history api
imo Mojang should add API settings for every player, ban evading wont be as easy as changing nickname since Minecraft uses uuids now
While I'm not exactly against the idea of having name history hidden, it'd make more sense imo to just give a feature for someone to show whether or not they want their name history available. Glad NameMC is giving that option tho

You don't care about privacy?
Removing username history seems counterintuitive to Mojang's effort to increase the "safety" (read: excessive policing and censorship) of Minecraft. You would think this public information is important to players' safety, as it makes ban evasion, alt. account usage, and other forms of trickery a lot harder to pull off.
The chat reporting feature was bad, but this is even worse since Mojang claims that hiding username history is good for privacy. At the very least, it would've been better to still display a player's most recent previous name, even if their older names are all hidden.
1. having a single vps constantly monitor a ign/igns isnt hard, especially if you use the bearer-token ign checker (more accurate)
2. that api has no rate limit, you can spam it non stop all day if you wanted to and detect probably by the exact second something has been changed.
3. detecting that change and sending the info to many of your ready to go vpses isnt hard, all thats left is to wait a month and 1 week and have them all attempt a snipe, if all fail check status of said profile if it is not yet claimed try again, at that point you can safely assume
a. the name is locked
b. the name is soft locked
c. someone else has got it or you got it and your program failed or the mc servers are being slow.

they already let you remove names with personal info from the api (you just have to contact mojang support) so i don’t know why they think it’s necessary

Well my friends there's a positive to this. If u cheat on a server than change your name before they can ban you. They can't check your username anymore.
the personal information in past names was not really a problem, one could have contacted Mojang and requested for your name history to be hidden or wiped or smthn.
I am one of those players whose username history had my IRL name so this is a problem for some players because we want to get rid of past cringy usernames. Also Mojang never responds to those type of requests from normal players. It’s only for high-profile/well known people.
True, but I know not everyone had the account information for Mojang to do this; they usually were quite strict on needing the original email, transaction ID, etc

True, but you needed a LOT of info about the account that some people didn't have, even legitimate owners.
mojang could make it optional. Win win for everyone, I get to hide my deadname, low namechange accounts are still high in value.

Personally i feel Name History like NameMC should stay for server moderation and and don't some try to put viruses on game... and i do love sites that are good for historical stuff and i gladly like seeing my on these and all but i guess that's just me

The people who like this change all really don't understand the true meaning of it... Like, there are ways of getting your account history wiped without ruining something that's been huge for over a decade now.

Nope! Bedrock's name system is already utterly scuffed as it is, I don't think they could make it any worse (fingers crossed)

Yeah, this definitely does help people in terms of privacy but there's negatives too, more than the ones I've mentioned. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, I'm not really sure where I stand, I just presented my thoughts on it; the good, the bad, and the "idk but things are gonna change"

Didn't think of it being used in the case of trans people but yeah, that'd be another benefit. I think a Mojang's-end toggle name history option would be great, but they're Mojang and they hate middle grounds, so I guess we'll have to settle for NameMC's
