This was the end of the travellers, by their own means. I remember the free festivals in the early 80s, and there were great. But the government decided to stomp all over that free life. My dad knew lots of the original hippy convoy, and they were a good bunch to begin with. My dads bus was camped in private woodland, with permission from the owner of the woodland, but it was burned to ashes because of the hatred of hippy travellers. The government and media made them all look like monsters, but most of them were pretty cool. Unfortunatly the minority ruined it for the rest of the law abiding travellers. No one mentions the free food kitchens at festivals, which the travellers set up at festivals, for people who had no money, or food. People could just turn up and get a free meal, provided by donations by festival goers, asked for by travellers going round with collection boxes. I guess it was all part of Maggi Thatchers modern Britain. There are no free things anymore, just look at the commercialism that is around us these days, there is NOTHING free anymore. That is a shame that every has to make a pound or two, otherwise we could have a beautiful country/world. Bit maney talks, and freedom can fuck off. Sad times we live in, unless you are rich. But those guys did themselves no favours by leaving a mess where ever they went. A prime example of that was the Elephant Fayre in Cornwall, that was stopped because of antics of a minority of travellers, and that was a really cool festival. Times change, shame really. They were some great times, shame it had to end.

That was the end to freedom of choice in this country. The criminal justice act curtailed the freedom of assembly together. This affects more that just travellers; they did not like the unions protesting. They seem to think they own this country and the people in it. The only authority they have over you is the authority you give them. I am an authority of one. I make moral decisions based on my thoughts and beliefs.

Back in the day if the people of Middlezoy were New age Traveller's, there'd have been 500 riot police, riot van's, helicopter's and god knows what at their protest. They were frightened of NA traveller's and not "gypsies" apparently. The NA travellers I knew left a site clean and tidy, unlike the "gypsies" I've met who shit everywhere and left sites in a total fucking mess, not to mention nicking everything for miles or ripping folk off tarmacking their drives with 1/4" of tarmac and charging around a grand for 20 mins "work" and threatening violence if anyone baulked at the price.
There were bad NA traveller's as well of coarse, and I've met great "gypsies"/Irish travellers, but the reaction of the government at the time was way over the top with propaganda being provided by the papers. Nowt's changed, the hater's have immigrant's in their sight's now and still hate dole scroungers. As if having a job or owning property excuses bad manner's and prejudice.

@@KarrierBag hello there bud.. Yes I read ur post somewhere else I thjnk, I read someone said about boats.. U know for such a long time I always dreamed of living on a barge but the cost dissuaded me, even tho I've never actually gone and looked, I know it's a few thousand and I've never had much more than a grand in my hand ever(my own money lol) and also I wasnt sure of how u actually go about it.. Im almost 50 so my days of adventure and probably done now. There's many reasons I veered back into the house, if u come across my comments on other old travellers videos ull see. Its a shame because although I still follow a head lifestyle I don't in other regards.. At 13/ 14 ish I started listening to electro Street sounds (and breakdance etc) then housenation got me into house, then acid House, then rave and then I met some travellers who ingraciated me into the scene in 91..that first festival was a culture shock. Lol. I came back home via pitching my caravan at my Romany uncles site and then year or so later a tent in another uncles back garden then into the house and shortly after was given a house with gf of time with our child. Here I stayed.. And those 25 years u been busy ive been here and spent my 25 procrastinating.. I had a dog given me by a traveller lad called Lee (who was quite baldish on top of head but had a huge thick single dread at back of head.. Lol, very recognisable) at time I hadn't long been into the life and he said look I don't want u to have her and then go back to house I want these dogs living life on the road.. Of course years later her and her daughter both died of old age here in a house.. (not sure he ever knew, never see him since that time) anyway rambling on to u..lol...but yes a boat I'd like that but maybe I'm like prisoners who been in such a long time, u know like institutionalised, maybe I've been whatever the version is living in a house... Tho must say the huge contradictory aspect of travellers life and the whole concept of living a better way than the bee hive/ant nest mentality of this society I only saw replicated in almost the same way in the traveller community of mini capitalist socialist free reign anarchaistic individuals.. Lol.. Who always called society and bemoaned it verhimetly yet went to get the dole money and visited Dr's and hospitals, oh and still bought stuff from shops.. So I found all that quite head numbing (although how do u escape society without self sufficiency in everything?) so listening to that round the camp fire night after night also had a modicum of sway in my coming back to house life... There I go again... Rambling.. Anyway ill leave ur ears alone at this point... Any chance u can give me a quick overview of how u live on the water ur selves??? And how its replicable without putting on any kind of entertainment for money (as I'm not skilled in that way.. Lol) nice to hear from u. Very interesting concept.

As for this clip 90% of these new age travelers (the middle class kids) soon grew out of the screen they finished their fancy middle class education's on mummy's and daddy's healthy trust fund and went on to be the wankers they pretended to despise. The other 10% (the working class kids) had no escape route so it was smack or jail often both and that's why it died a death. I myself was found guilty of possession with intent (ecstasy) in 1988 I served 2 years of a 3 year sentence. On my release I found all the people with posh accents had gone the rest where unfit smacked up parents, I moved straight on fitted in and became another tax payer.

So they were roaming around the country collecting welfare (at the expense of taxpayers) & upset they couldn't get into a festival for free, even though everyone else had to buy tickets. And they can't understand why people have a problem with them. Did I miss something?

      To Dwayners13,
I think you are missing something. But at the same time 1993 you have a view of part of the then social problem. It was a bit of a turning point for those New Age (NA) Travellers as they were having to deal with the social change of attitudes towards them. IE they were having to learn they were not welcome. That was part of the social change. In former decades they would have had a site to go to. They would have been welcomed. I agree their free entry expectation at the ticket event seems on the surface to be an over site on their behalf. But their belief they may be welcomed there were not with out the fact that in previous years they did seem welcomed. But attitudes changed and decisions were made by Glastonbury Pilton Festival organisers to ban their entry as well as to make known to them their were unwelcome and there were no free tickets. Up to 1985 and including 1985 (Tickets were only £16.00s) there would have been room for them or an adjacent feild they were allowed. But due to some security issues (Mass on site security confrontation, 3 landrovers burnt, criminal damage, illegal drug dealing) in 1985 the attitude changed.
In no way do I think they should have free tickets. But in understading of the social conditions of the times there was an other factor that likly contributed to the change of organisers attitudes.
1984 was the last legal free Stone Henge festival (Attendance about 58,000). In 1985 the Stone Henge Festival was illegalised with thousands of hippies, NA traverlers and festival goers not knowing it was banned that year or that the British Parliment had voted against allowing it again. Thousands travelled hoping for a festival only to find 600 riot police there to stop them. A battle (Battle of the Bean Feild) resulted. The festival was prevented. But travellers then needing a site moved on to Glastonbury with their Beanfeild battle baggage (Emotion, psychological traumatic baggage (their) problem, you may say). The closure of the anticipated Free site formerly attended by 58,000 festival goers which had it, occurred would have occurred the same weekend as the Glastonbury Festival. So with tens of thousands of free Festival goers with out their usual Free Site, bands and festival to go to. Glastonbury became a logical next best option. Glastonbury was already that year finding it's site too small and had increased it's size by 100 acres. A 100 acres with out anticipating the extra from the then prevented 58,000 attendee Stonehenge Free Festival. Had the Free festival been allowed then the traverlers would not have been at Glastonbury 1985. Therefore the Security issue would not have occurred. Tensions would not have arisen. Travellers would not have had their Bean Feild problems along with their problems occuring due to their usual incomes for June 1985 not been earnt as their anticipated Festival (where some earnt their income) was prevented. But the problem did occur and resulted in the Glastonbury Festival organisers deciding to prevent the NA Traveler, Gypsys, Peace Convoy in further years.
Prior to the 1985 decision, a few penniless traveller hippies would have been no problem and they would just be absorbed or just be part of the festival. The festival licence could cope with out stress and a good time was the general result (The few poor absorbed or accomodated). But 58,000 or the increasing numbers could not just be absorbed. The licence had not the capacity to grow so vast, so quickly. The demands were stresses that would demand responses and actions. Actions to prevent licence capacity breaches and therefore the closure or prevention of further licence permits for future years. So the resulting Glastonbury Festival security situation of 1985 led to the decision to prevent furture entry by the NA Gypsy Traveler's Peace Convoy. They had lost their two main sites in 2 years, Or in that year 1985 if the decision to prevent their furture entries occurred that year.
So in later years it was a learning experience for them. There had been a change. Yes there had been free entry in former years as well as yes it seems a bit outrageous for those or hundreds of NA Gypsys traverlers to turn up with expectations of a free ticket. But the that 1985 and former festivals were separated by the decision there would be no free entry for them. No free feild.
Everyone else didn't have to buy a ticket, as in many former years there were plenty of worker tickets or wanted labourers who would work just for entry. But evolutionary events would change Glastonbury Festival in to a political commercial event. So going back to the evolutionary origins. Of the early 70s and sixties. The event was a hippy style festival. A small convoy of travelling experienced hippies with bands, eletric or acoustic musical instruments, their own music, buses, generators, singers, groupies, stages and assortment of people on the road was often a welcom sight to prospective festival organisers as the convoy of festival people and equipment made the festival. In affect it was a ready made festival nucleus. Ready to set-up, play, preform and supply food, jewlery, camping, washing, and other festival paraphernalia. Then after usually they provided the litter pickers, deconstruction workers and eventually the buses and coaches to carry the remaining stragglers away. Many did not receive income support. As their incomes were from the festival(s). For many the 70s and first half of the eighties were busy lucative years. But things had been a changing. No longer was there a small festival convoy. The so called New Age Gypsys Traveller Peace Convoy had emerged. A different breed. More politically active. More anarchical, part terriorist, part punk, more subversive and less caring, less legal and nothing really to do with the original hippy style peace activists of the former sixties peace movement. They may have called them self peace Convoy. But peace or the hippy peace ideologies were something they were not. In the early years a small convoy of sucessful festival workers could easily carry a hundred or two penniless workers just looking for a free ride to the next festival worksite. But by 1984 after the Peace Convoy had emerged the festival Convoy was some two hundred vehicles. Maybe 50 buses 40 coaches, stalls, trucks, caravans and cars.
The convoy had morphed. Changed. The New Age Convoy were no longer looking for a festival. They just needed a site. They were large enough to be the festival it self. But that in part then became the problem. IE. There was going to be no site available. Decisions were made by the Government to prevent access. Maybe also to break it up. To prevent it growing or prevent it arriving at a suitable festival site. Authorities took on a new attitude than if they are travellers then they ought to be travelling. The Authorities then made over night road side stops offenses. The convoy was being prevented from reaching a stopping destination. Being prevented from reaching work or a site where they could work. That Peace Convoy group could no longer earn enough to support themselves or their equipment or any one else. They were being targeted. Unlike the early small festival folk who worked to maintain themselves, their vehicles as well as feed and provide for a number of less successfull travelling workers. Times had changed.
The Glastonbury Festival Organizers changed from supporters of the early hippy counter culture peace movement to commercialisation. But that change had to permeate the consciousness of those who evolved from the movement they used to support. So there had to be a time for that change (Non welcome change) to be understood by some of the less affluent hopefull attendies.
My view is. The prevention to sites, the breaking up resulted in their loss of access to food, either paid, communal or free. Access to work, or the supportive work of others. IE. The prevention of their work drove many to the DHSS when previously they may have had their needs met by their own work or the work of the festival workers. Every Free Festival always had generally it's own free food kitchen and distribution. Usually provided for by stall holder contributions and free food community workers.
So. In the early years they were not roaming the country side collecting DHSS welfare. The festivals had their own welfare. But from the 2nd half of the nineteen-eighties (1985-1990) those Festival welfare services were along with the Convoy being prevented from attending free festivals as the free festival sites were being prevented from generally being granted. So yes many did end-up on welfare payments.

How do travellers earn a living?

    • @MikeGreenwood51
      @MikeGreenwood51 3 года назад +3

How do or how did? There is a fundamental difference with how they used to prior to the forceful prevention of the Free Festivals 1985. Prior to 1985 there were a thousand ways to earn a living or just to survive the festival. Much of course depends on the traveller's skills or his equipment. But most every festival goer has need from dawn till dusk. So a traveller with a van or 7.5 ton truck can easily (weather permitting) roll to the shops to stock up or a thousand or hundred muchibles or liquid fluid. Hand crafted Jewellery was always popular. A site with a thousand vehicles is of course going to be a boom town for a mecanic with a st of spanners and grease gun. Making records earnt some handsomely. Delivering wood or fuel earns money. Delivering any usable commodity earns. Working vehicles are always useful. Can you imagine how popular a guy with a steam engine and electric dynamo would have been? You could just have a couple of swings or a bouncy castle. Do not confuse these being pushed around in the video with those earning a living at a festival. As they in the video are clearly not earning a living. But even a milk man and milk float could sell out a whole truck to the dawn campers before he reloads for his regular delivery route. Pre 1985, glaziers could cut glass. Painters could paint. Electricians could do electrical work, stage builders build stages. Cinema builders built cinemas etc etc. Then there were also the artists & preformers.
