This is absolutely fascinating. Some of these conversations and faces I can remember like they were yesterday. One thing missing from the copper reading out the terms and conditions of attendance at Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice is the final line, presumably missed out in the final cut due to it making it all too obvious that we stood zero chance of getting anywhere near the stone circle: "And finally, the group currently camped at Hanging Langford will not be permitted to attend," a statement met with hoots of derision. It is also worth pointing out that the arrangements made and so carefully read out to us would have needed the sun to obligingly rise three times that morning, a joke that caused incredulous laughter around the camp for the rest of the day. No wonder we burned the notices. Another thing I remember is that, as in the case of the girl in the car who asked the copper where he was going for his holidays before saying they had ruined hers, these people were admonished by many of the pagans because they weren't portraying a serious image in their efforts to claim restriction of religious practice. The young chap who took on the role of chief negotiator with the police and played a very prominent part in every site meeting at Hanging Langford, found himself suddenly harassed, bullied and shouted down when he tried to perform the same role at our post-Solstice camp at King's Somborne. There was a group of travellers already in situ called The Deviants and they weren't too happy with somebody arriving from Hanging Langford and trying to tell them what to do. I actually felt sorry for him as he had done a splendid job at The Langfords, not that it did us any good as we were led a merry dance by the police and arrested for obstructing the highway, a highway we couldn't unobstruct because the police were obstructing it for us. It really was ridiculous, but in many ways one of the most life-defining weeks of my existence.

I was there too - you can see me briefly on the video - it's great that the BBC were filming, but I know that it's disingenuous, because it wasn't all of the whole confrontation and the aftermath, where we were all lied to and, I believe, illegally detained. At least they got the numbers of people arrested roughly right - my own estimate was 275, unlike most of the papers at the time - The Guardian was the most accurate, while The Times was the least.

The tension was mounting and the crowd was becoming agitated at large police presence surrounding the stones. Just before the police cut the barbed wire to charge a young hippy anarchist climbed one of the bluestones carrying a wolf hair pendant and shouted to the amazed crowd FREEDOM X 3. 22:14 - I like this. It shows the classic British social decorum being challenged, yet also the selflessness and dignity towards each other. Both proud people with strong views that want what's best. They're not taking political sides either!
Imagine thinking that because you wear a stupid costume you have the power and right to tell other adults where they can and can’t go. Baffles my mind!
As I remember there was a lot of hypocrisy in the laws back then. The Police must look back and think its was ridiculous. Also I was near local back then I remember my dad's neighbour being stopped on several occasions coming and going to his work, being threatened with arrest and having his details taken down, totally mad.
Just a prime example of the loss of freedom for people in this country. I wish we would all stand up against this police state,as it will get worse and worse for everyone, and the future for the children in this country is getting darker and darker.

I can understand that Stonehenge needs to be protected as part of our heritage so as long as no one is climbing all over them then I can't see the problem with allowing people to have a concert nearby because most of these people are peaceful!!!
What a trip down arrestville lane,i wonder where and what some of these folks are doing now? i spotted my daft face right at the end giving a unity fist salute in the police bus,and it sits proudly in my dbs check, woud i do it again? damned straight
And there were no stabbings or shootings, in fact i dont ever remember anything like that from peace & music loving hippy's, unlike a certain carnival in london most years
Was at Stonehenge 83. Someone drove a motorcycle over a tent full of people. Very unpleasant, aggressive atmosphere. Plenty of ***jobs around. First and last major music festival I ever went to.
Never understood all this "obstructing the highway" bollocks. The police themselves were obstructing the highway by parking lorry's across the road, so in theory you could have performed a citizens arrest on the police themselves for obstructing the highway. Whatever, it was all a load of cobblers, they had the might if not the right.
Refusing to vacate the location after having been warned to do so 6:22 is, or may be called 'obstruction'. You could be sat in the middle of a football feild allowing enough room for a heard of elephants (not many in England) to pass either side. But if warned to vacate or not be there at or after 2PM or you may be arrested for obstruction. Then requardless of the fact there is enough room for a heard of elephants to pass either side. The policeman may arrest for obstruction. The obstruction is the obstruction of his duty to move the person away.
Yeah! I've seen it now - 'cos you can see me straining to hear what Inspector Evans (yes, I will name him) was saying - I'm assuming he's the one in the middle, as I was later accused of obstructing him...how so? This charge, and the one of obstructing the PC who arrested me (hello PC Morse - now I feel that I can say that too...when do you think that you were going to become an Inspector?) were bullshit, as they dropped those charges in court - only going with "Obstructing the Road". They all know that we were off to go and do what he decreed...in groups of 2 - 3 and go to (an apparently OK field in Berwick St. James, where Hawkwind were prepared to play). If all of us could have done that, with Hawkwind's help...I think things might have been a bit cheaper for the taxpayer and better for everyone all round. @@MikeGreenwood51
Oh! I forgot! They'd already spent all that taxpayers' money (including my Mum's...I've always found that to be hilariously ironic) on funding the whole absurd and ridiculous operation to stop us...going to see Hawkwind play in a field (at best, even if it wasn't adjacent to Stonehenge). Sigh.
By the way, I'd like to say that I wish neither of those two aforementioned gents any ill will, as I know that they behaved properly, while doing their job, never mind possibly positively resisting becoming part of Thatcher's private army...as apparently happened in some quarters the year before.
the only thing that used to ever happen at the driveway entrance to Stonehenge from that trunk A road was you might find couples fussing over hot radiator caps under the bonnet .. nobody bothered venturing there, glimpsing it obscurely from the highway had seemed ample enough
Actually there is the very first bit of this video missing.. John Rety Hungarian poet mathematician writer asking what law in this country allows them to stop people going to Stonehenge
The fear of the great unwashed, look at the resources they threw at this, meanwhile actual criminals were having a field day while the entire constabulary stood around abusing Human rights wherever possible. I miss Thatcher, you knew where you stood when they wore their fascism as a badge of honour.
Every year that passes the more pathetic the police action as documented in this video becomes. The sad thing is nothing has really changed if anything it has got worse the death of Sarah Everard and what happened at her vigil is a symbol of that.
All I see here is mainly punters, townies and festival goers, not many travellers. The travellers wouldn't leave their vehicles to be trashed and walk, OK not all but mostly. The bean field was hushed up until the 90s , and then the proper footage started to surface. These people mostly unaware of the be an field in 85. And pigs trying to avoid that again.
@@counterculture23 without watching it again I thought the reporter kept saying ' the travellers' meaning everyone. Might be wrong. I've been reminiscing last few days myself and watched a lot of footage.
Most vehicle dwellers were at stoney cross. Travellers had asked people to turn up in support after all they were the ones who would attend the festival
Which is why I boycotted going there last year...total joke, even if a very earnest man subsequently told me that the rules were for security reasons, since it's a "religious monument" and thus might attract extremists (!)...these days, maybe there are much better, quieter places to go... @@muddyfunster1323
They had the rural compound, because the time before, they impounded a load of them in the County police HQ. Not realizing they could not stop them living there. funny as you like, going there to score a draw! GREAT DAYS!!!!!!
I remember the peace convey well, it's hilarious really the way the authorities came down so hard - it really was a-lot of middle class (and often upper class) kids and old hippies, not causing much harm really. What the establishment didn’t cotton onto is these kids grow out of it, the majority anyway. The battle of the bean-field was utterly disgusting, but i also remember the 1980 Stonehenge festival were Crass and Poison Girls were set to play so lots of punks showed up too and bikers decided to viscously batter all the young punks they could, using bottles and chains turning it into a brawl. At this stage there was also an element we called the Brew Crew, complete dickheads off their nuts on special brew that just caused havoc - stealing, fighting and messing with the other travellers primarily. At this point I could see the end coming, the police were a big part of it but soo too were a lot of idiots who ruined it on the traveller side. its weird because when i see the police not lifting a finger against extinction rebellion and things like not lifting a finger when my car got nicked, i can’t see they have the numbers these days . Maybe the peace convoy should start again and see what happens ..? The thing is, imagine if this was all the police had to deal with now, it seems quaint. I had had enough by 87, but then the acid house and rave scene started which was fantastic, but again the death of that was Castle Morton - you have to be wise, i thought at the time what is the point of doing it this big? Its going to be the end of it - and it was …
Well since no laws were actually broken in the first place there was no real reason for any of this. They were not obstructing the highway before the police caused them to do so.
2:35 'The injunction is in force'. IE, you step in to or on any part of the out of bounds area and the laws of the Court Order, injunction are contravened (broken). The police did not cause them to be there contrary to a court order (an exclusion zone (Injunction)).
The stones were closed to the public in 1985 because the site was becoming overcrowded with druids, stoneheads, students etc all congregating there and there was a few skirmishes.
"daddy what did you do at work today, Lisa's Daddy built a wall in a garden" "well me and my colleagues attacked a field full of peaceful people, we hit them with clubs and punched them and smashed up their homes and even had their pet dogs taken away and destroyed" "oh....Daddy".
In the late 70s and into the 80s under Thatcher there was austerity big time no jobs rent was high a lot of people were squatting and some chose to live on the road it was cheaper to buy an old bus or ex military vehicle festivals would be the place to meet everyone and every year stonehenge was the main gathering around solstice to party and celebrate life with the rising sun, I lived on the road from 1982 to 1994,great times and great people.

Looking back we can see that this was the beginning of a Police state. Now we have gone Orwellian 1984 and the thought police tell you what words you can use. The police then and now acted illegally. Time for a change.
It’s also illegal to trample all over someone else’s land and being loud and making a mess
What's your view now, in 2024?
"Nothing to stop you walking up to the stones" 😂
It seems like two very different words collide looking at it from 2019.... I've watched soo many hours of these festivals and frackars between archaic minded square as can be men's men in uniform...IV never got in with men's men and wouldn't think twice about which side I'd be on...helping bring peace love and music anyway I could..bless you all.love you all to bits xxxxx
22:14 - I like this. It shows the classic British social decorum being challenged, yet also the selflessness and dignity towards each other. Both proud people with strong views that want what's best. They're not taking political sides either!
Great video thank you
Imagine thinking that because you wear a stupid costume you have the power and right to tell other adults where they can and can’t go.
I lost all respect for the British police after this outrageous behaviour.
Just a prime example of the loss of freedom for people in this country. I wish we would all stand up against this police state,as it will get worse and worse for everyone, and the future for the children in this country is getting darker and darker.
At least the range rover,s were proper in those days👍
21.40 This man is a hero for letting that trumped up 1980s Karen know how judgemental and stuck up she is with her stereotypical accusations like he said we are all human and no one is better than the next person regardless of wealth, status and privilege❤️💛💚
I can understand that Stonehenge needs to be protected as part of our heritage so as long as no one is climbing all over them then I can't see the problem with allowing people to have a concert nearby because most of these people are peaceful!!!
So are music festivals - which leave a carpet of landfill behind them.
Some familiar faces there, it was pretty entertaining trying to get to henge, made it more fun almost!
No where near as fun as an actual festival by the stones
first time I have seen this doc

What a trip down arrestville lane,i wonder where and what some of these folks are doing now? i spotted my daft face right at the end giving a unity fist salute in the police bus,and it sits proudly in my dbs check, woud i do it again? damned straight
I remember it well .......
The girl at 15:30 - hero.
Interesting times :)
Amazing to think that those kids are in their 60s now, and being abused as "Boomers" by kids today.
Hawkwind played at Westbury.
They are also playing Glastonbury today and tomorro.
Darling, we're the young ones
And young ones
Shouldn't be afraid
I was there when the sun came up..
the only thing that used to ever happen at the driveway entrance to Stonehenge from that trunk A road was you might find couples fussing over hot radiator caps under the bonnet .. nobody bothered venturing there, glimpsing it obscurely from the highway had seemed ample enough
Back in the day when some people had balls
They never showed anything but snippets. First time watching.
Actually there is the very first bit of this video missing.. John Rety Hungarian poet mathematician writer asking what law in this country allows them to stop people going to Stonehenge
I still remember the sound of his voice. I thought the video leapt in
I remember John. Torriano Avenue
God that wally at the end she cant see her anger is at her own situation
Th'reet zod ¿? mapman Sam appen coulda sorted thee a route, wrong year tho, pal.
Keep On.
we need to stand up and take our rights back and our freedom
All I see here is mainly punters, townies and festival goers, not many travellers. The travellers wouldn't leave their vehicles to be trashed and walk, OK not all but mostly. The bean field was hushed up until the 90s , and then the proper footage started to surface. These people mostly unaware of the be an field in 85. And pigs trying to avoid that again.
Alternative people in general were aware of the Beanfield, of course they were. No one claimed that they were travellers.
@@counterculture23 without watching it again I thought the reporter kept saying ' the travellers' meaning everyone. Might be wrong. I've been reminiscing last few days myself and watched a lot of footage.
I was at both events Martin, but i take your points.

Most vehicle dwellers were at stoney cross. Travellers had asked people to turn up in support after all they were the ones who would attend the festival
Give people authority, they get ambitious with it
If they arrested them all where were they sent? there would never be anywhere near enough cells
I love to see a police van on its side and on fire 🔥🔥🔥 !!!
Police took my keys out my motorcycle and threw them in a field ,took me 2 hours to find them
Scumbags!
Of course now nobody is allowed to visit Stonehenge.
But I don't think you can walk right next to the stones these days.
Which is why I boycotted going there last year...total joke, even if a very earnest man subsequently told me that the rules were for security reasons, since it's a "religious monument" and thus might attract extremists (!)...these days, maybe there are much better, quieter places to go...

Its going to be the end of it - and it was …
Why can't the police just leave the people alone to live there lifes

7:02 So who here is obstructing the highway?
Anyone (except those with security clearance) staying where they were ordered not to be, 6:22.
We all know that no-one did, until reaching the complete police blockade.
Yeah! But at that time the authorities were completely inconsistent about it!@@MikeGreenwood51
shocking, when they did belong to the people
The truth, it was rebuilt not so long ago. It’s the remains of a giant.
The dogs of the oppressor…😂
Fucking unbelievable, those conditions are what I would expect in a totalitarian state! Was this the year that the Druids agreed to work with Cops?
The stones were closed to the public in 1985 because the site was becoming overcrowded with druids, stoneheads, students etc all congregating there and there was a few skirmishes.
Bloody disgusting behaviour from police
"daddy what did you do at work today, Lisa's Daddy built a wall in a garden"
"well me and my colleagues attacked a field full of peaceful people, we hit them with clubs and punched them and smashed up their homes and even had their pet dogs taken away and destroyed"
"oh....Daddy".
Still hate Thatcher,
Cushdy-Chavy!
This is when the shit started to hit the big fan? The establishment wants to be one step beyond? Xxxx
Can anyone let me know who these people were, was there a big pagan movement at the time ? I’m not familiar with this event but it’s very interesting
