Great video!! I have 2005 Forester 2.5x MT and the car doesn't have a rough idle but when accelerating it bogs and loses power. The more gas I give it the more it stutters and bogs and sometimes it turns off. There are no check engine lights on. I also have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, cleaned the throttle body (watched the video you posted on the throttle body cleaning) and tried this idle relearn procedure but its still doing the same thing. What can it be? Where do I go from here?
MrSubaru1387 I have a 05 Legacy when driving suddenly the Idle goes down and loses power what could it be,I cleaned the TB,Change air filter,Sparkplugs and keeps doing the same...Please help me
@@washchris just did a few days ago and I definitely noticed a significant difference, now I just through a CEL code I gotta check:( but hey thanks for the reply man, much appreciated
1. turn off all lights and accessories (no A/C, lights, blower, radio, etc.) 2. disconnect battery for 30 min (now is opportunity to clean terminals, check ground, clean throttle body) 3. re-connect battery 4. turn key to ON position for 15 seconds (throttle body has a chance to go through a check sweep during this period; do not let engine turn over) 5. start car and let it idle without any load (no A/C, lights, blower, radio, etc.) 6. leave engine running for 10 minutes, never loading, never touching accelerator 7. turn off engine and leave key in off position at least 20 seconds 8. turn key back to the ON position for 15 seconds without starting engine 9. start engine and leave idling for 5 minutes without loading or touching accelerator 10. turn off engine and wait 20 seconds before restarting DONE! Test drive!
You saved my @$$! Had MAJOR shoulder surgery Wednesday. Saturday wife calls from the road. 2007 Forester died. Told her to get a jump, have Autozone put in new battery so she did. As she drove away, car died again. Autozone said the alternator was bad. She got it home and I found out, on my own, the alternator can be changed with one hand. Car still died. MAF spotless. Found this video. Followed it to the letter and the car runs like a champ! You have no idea how thankful I am. You really helped me out in a time of need. Thank you again.
October of 2023, just did the plugs in '16 Crosstrek, getting ready for winter and MY major shoulder surgery! Followed these steps and they cured my off idle stumble!
Hi Mr. Subaru, I'm so grateful for this video. I'm a 60 yr old woman. I really need to watch all your videos because I own a couple of Subaru's since they are so perfect for driving in the mountains where there is snow and where I live. I have a 2016 Subaru Forester and I noticed at a cold start it would have these popping noises as it would warm up for a few minutes and those popping noises got worse. I found a very very dirty air filter and I replaced it with a new one. I did disconnect the battery when I did that. Not sure why but I did. Just the negative post. So the popping noise went away but started to come back as I drove it and now at idle, at a stop sign, the rpm's would drop so bad the car wanted to die. The car has 130,000 miles and the first thing I thought of was, well since the MAF sensor is where the air filter is, maybe the MAF sensor needs to be cleaned. So your videos popped up when I was looking for anything Subaru Idle issues on RUclips. I saw the one about the throttle body and also this one "Idle Relearn" so I thought "Don't touch anything. Do the relearn first. So I followed it and completed it per your instructions and it fixed it. I was so happy. Thank you so much. I never even knew there was such a thing as an idle relearn. You are a great teacher. Thank you so much. Diana
Took me all of 15 minutes plus a test drive and now my 06 OB XT is smooth as silk. Had previously cleaned the sticky throttle body without the relearn, thanks for uncovering the last piece of the puzzle!
This fixed my 2008 forester , it now purs like a kitten. 2 years dealing with this and i fixed it in 20 minutes, thank you! My engins would shake horribly since i bought it. Changed the motor mounts and it didnt do much but this was the answer.
Your channel is a terrific resource for Subaru owners! This video is a very useful detailed tutorial, and essential viewing for anyone who wants to save money by changing their own battery! One other procedure needed after disconnecting battery in many Subaru models is to relearn the power window settings, which also get messed up. The steps for this can be found in your owner's manual.
Like all these other folks, this procedure worked, amazingly enough. I cleaned my battery cables a couple weeks ago and when I put them back on I couldn't get the car to idle. It died every time. I thought it might be crud in the gas tank but that didn't work. I finally consulted Google and found this video. I thought, no way can it be this simple. Well it is. I have a 2005 Forester and on the test drive I was damned excited. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I'll pass it on to my friends who own Subaru's.
Finally, a definitive relearn procedure with step by step instructions, and proof of concept right in front of our eyes. Thanks mate, I really needed something like is, as when I'm heading home after a drive and I let the car cruise to allow the turbo to cool, I find the revs dropping and the car starts to stutter until I hit the accelerator. Just gotta give the throttle body a clean and give this procedure a try, Much appreciated and a new sub.
I’ve had an idle problem with my 09 Forester for a while now. It wants to die when I’m driving and put the clutch in. Cleaned the throttle body and did this relearn procedure. FINALLY cured the problem, thanks!
Went out to my car today and had a few warning lights after start up. Got a code for P0600. I’m gonna try to take the battery cable off and do this again, anyone ever seen that code before?
Thank you so much! Like many others here, I also changed out my spark plugs and experienced rough idling at a standstill, even stalled a couple times. This fixed it completely; it has better throttle response and runs so smooth now! 2007 Subaru Legacy.
Wow, this really worked !! I had my doubts. Car was slow off the mark at stop signs and would idle rough after reving. All fixed. So much better now. I think the garage guys don't know or can't be bothered to reset the idle. Definitely recommend you do this even if you think your Subaru is fine. Thanks MrSubaru1387 !!
Had my oil changed at the Subaru dealer yesterday, and Dealer says I need to clean my injectors (They wanted $170 to clean injectors) as it was running rough at idle( around 600 rpm). I followed this procedure, and idle with A/C on is now stable at abour 750 rpm with AC on, and NOT a rough idle! This is on a 2015 Crosstrek with ~35K miles. I knew something was fishy since the idle speed was so low with A/C on. Searching here turned up this procedure, so thank you for documenting this!
Prior to this video, I had put a new front catalytic converter on my Subaru 2008 on me to suddenly get a rough idle after installing it I was like extremely bummed out. I figured the catalytic converter would probably fix a solution only for me to get a rough idle after watching the video and doing all the procedures I am I am completely satisfied with the results, and my car now runs has a smooth idle, no roughness to it and is extremely sensitive in a good way so if any viewers that are watching the video and are skeptical, don’t be this procedure. Sure works.
I didn't know this when I changed my plugs many years ago, caused me a lot of grief as the car was stalling and I didn't know what the hell was going on.This is an important video if you are going to disconnect the battery for any reason
My old battery died while I was on vacation. When I replaced the battery my idle was pretty rough. It wasn't dying at stop signs, but I was worried it might. Doing this process corrected the idle problem in my 2006 Outback xt and made shifting from a stop to 1st gear a bit smoother for this new stick shift driver.
I had the battery in my 2016 Legacy go bad and then noticed if I started the car after it was warmed up it did not want to idle. I also have been noticing that when I come to a stop the engine would come down to 500 rpms then bounce back up like the torque converter lock out was getting sluggish. Tried the relearn but the engine would not idle on the second start. I read the comments here and tore into the throttle body. Removed it and it was plenty dirty. Cleaned up and tried the relearn again. Complete success! This also cleared up my idle dip when I came to a stop. A great channel! We got 4 Subarus in the family and we love them. They handle the Nebraska winters here very well.
Had my 2019 outback serviced by the dealer and it was very unhappy about idling even dropping to almost stalling and the car wobbling side to side. Unwilling to go back to them ( I made sure they had changed the oil and filters before leaving) I looked this up and now she is perfect. Thank You.
I got a 2018 forester xt 6 months ago. 50k miles. With a similar problem as this after my local shop cleaned the throttle body and fuel injection system. I have been freaking out for sure lol. Trying this tomorrow! 🤞🏻
I had to do this on my daughters' '05 Outback. Somebody (probably me) left the dome light on and ran the battery down. To make matters worse, in the process of checking the air filter I pulled the air boot part way off the air box so when we jumped it, it ran like crap. Did the training procedure 3 times before I got it right. Should be a pro at it now! As always, thanks for the video.
Very useful for my Impreza 2013. This procedure corrected a too fast idle issue especially on D speed since I went to the garage for a recall for valve springs replacement. The garage employee didn’t believe (what I perceived) that this problem began after the spring replacement and suggested a throttle body cleaning, which I refused.
Interesting because I went to the dealer for a valve spring replacement on my 2012 impreza and I didn’t start having problems with it until after that.
pure genius, it works. I'm mad i actually paid the dealership for this a year ago for the same problem.. The gm of the dealership told me to try this exact same method last week when i was having the same issue(still charged me last year, though). I'm glad i saw this video, life saver for sure!!!
Like some of the other commenters, I was skeptical about this. My 2006 Forester idled a little rough, died a couple times. Purrs like a kitten now. Thanks for posting!
Just did this to my 2012 Impreza after I cleaned the throttle body. Was getting a low idle and stalling out when coming to a stop. Now it runs like its brand new!
I don't usually comment on help videos, I usually leave a like and be on my way, but I'm commenting to help your algorithm. This was a last resort for the "free way" to fix my problem. It would stutter hard coming to a stop or turning the wheel when stopped at a light. Even would stutter for no reason with no load. I didn't think this would help, but after cleaning the throttle body, EGR valve, and doing this procedure, it runs perfectly! Some stutter when I have a heavy load and turning the wheel, but that's to be expected. I appreciate the video! 2012 Legacy 6MT for reference.
First of All, love your channel and your the only reason my wife talked me into getting her another Outback. Love/hate on this thing, my Toyota's seem to never have issues like this one(2013 Outback 3.6R). The car was surging going up hills in 5 gear with the A/C on, cleaned the throttle body(god it was bad), she says it runs like a champ now. Thanks for such an informative channel!!!
Going from a CVPI to the 2011 Outback I have now is nuts. The engine bay alone gives me hope of less blood pressure spikes when I need to do maintenance 🤣 I am actually really excited, and your videos are super in depth, thank you!
This is amazing! I was changing my headlight and need to detach the battery, after that my Subaru Forester always go to idle in random time when I'm driving which could be very dangerous. I followed your instructions and it worked. You're a legend!
Did this on my 2006 SG forester. Didn't fix everything but it cleaned up the idle enough to diagnose #3 injector is bad. Thankyou for a straightforward tutorial 🤙🏽
I tested my o2 sensors and packed the connectors full of dielectric grease and things went real wonky!! HAd to clean out grease and let car learn all over again now shes fine.
I just changed plugs and cleaned throttle bodies on both my 2014 crosstrek and my wife’s 2011 outback. I need to do this idle relearn ASAP. Thanks for a great video.
Just did this to my 2017 impreza sedan after i cleaned the MAF and throttle bottle. Car seems to be driving so much more smoothly. I bought this used a few months ago, car is great but ive been doing little maintenance things just in case. Thank you
Thanks! Found your vid after stalling out a few times on my '14 Outback 2.5i 6MT after a battery check and clean - followed your guide and everything worked great.
This helps a lot thank you. So after swapping out the throttle body then starting the motor, it idled at 3000rpm and blue smoke filled the street and after this procedure it stopped smoking and ran fine
Im glad you gave a good tutorial out. I tried battery disconnected etc with automatic 2012 forester. Always felt like there is a pull. After this works beatifull. Has sports side also. Gearbox teached wrong and apparently no dimes were given on pedal feel 😂
I'm very happy to have found this video. My mom's car started idling very low (and rough) in drive and reverse, but ran normal otherwise. I tried a lot of stuff, searched for vacuum leaks, tried MAF, injectors, O2 sensor etc. Tonight I cleaned the throttle body and did this procedure and it idles great again. Thanks
I really appreciate that i have a legacy 2011 get back to life after doing your steps perfect ideal and the tran shifting like a brand new. Thank you Mr.subaru
Thank you Mr. Subaru for this post. I reset the idling on my 2015 outback watching this post. Thank you for doing with you do. I’ve been following you for about 6 months and now I know more about my car. Thank you from Southern California
Thank you so much, this fixed my idle problem! I disconnected my battery to work on some wiring... Reconnected it and immediately noticed that it felt like I was driving a manual when Id stop and go. Found this, and it fixed it!!! Thankful for the Internet and you.
Thanks a lot for this procedure, it actually helped on my 2004 Subaru Forester XT. At first I didn’t understand why my vehicle was choking and not holding idle while stopped. But after watching this video multiple time, I was confident it was the issue and upon doing it. My car is back to normal. ✌️😃 thanks for the video.
i tried it on my 2003 2.0 X but to no avail. i guess i don;t have that type of throttle body. meanwhile, my car doesn't hold idle very often, and seems to be choking a lot when i've had to stop at a trafic light :/ it's also using a lot of petrol when it;s supposed to run LPG.. 260 km on what, 35 liters of LPG, PLUS half a tank of euro98 petrol :(
G'day mate. Awesome bro, it works well on my missis 2006 liberty. Thanks. One thing I've change though, the 1st step. I've disconnected the battery then turn on the headlights for 1 second turn the switch off then connected the battery. In that way you save 10 minutes. Thanks again, awsome tips bro👍👍👍👍
@8:35 you described the exact "issue" that I've had with a used Subaru I just bought. I'm guessing the previous owners never did an idle relearn when they replaced the original battery. I can almost guarantee they traded it in because they had issues with it afterward.
Not sure if this is related but my manual transmission XV would rev up to about 2500 if I was in gear and press in the clutch and stay there as if it was anticipating a gear change. It would idle down only if you shifted into neutral or press the brake. It drove me nuts especially driving in traffic with all the stop and go. It eventually went away so it must have relearned itself. I bet this video would have been very useful. Interestingly enough this happened after throttle body cleaning. Regular idle was fine. Just thought it might help someone. Great tutorial!
Hello from St Thomas in the Caribbean. I am almost through all of your videos. Truly amazing work. I have a 1999 Forester and it’s perfect for down here. Hard to get repairs done so I have had to learn myself. I realize you probably have tons of requests for advice. We do not have a dealership here or even a qualified mechanic to do the work. If you have time I have an intermittent idle issue. Rungs great for a while then all of the sudden it will almost stall 6 or 7 times in a row and then run great again. When the ac is on and I turn it off the rpms drop like it wants to stall and then levels off again. New spark plugs, MAF, PCV valve, air filters. Have pulled the IAC and cleaned and put back but I just can’t seem to get it running right. Car runs great under power. Checked for vacuum leaks as well. Also a ton of forums
No CEL. I do not know how to properly check the IAC to ensure it’s working..I am guessing that maybe that could be it but don’t want to have one shipped down without checking it
Why, why does Subaru do this? Disconnect the battery for a routine plug change and then crap idle. Judging by the comments you’ve saved the day over and over again, thanks for taking the time. I guess this needs to be done any time the battery is disconnected in the future.
I had a very similar issue with idle when coming to a stop in a 2013 scion fr-s. I would hear a clacking noise when the idle drop happened. Cleaning the throttle body didn't fix the idle problem. I think it was due to the valve spring recall for this model year.
I changed my spark plugs yesterday, the battery was out of the car for a few houres. After starting the car for the first time, it couldn't even hold itself on idle. Only when pressing the gas pedal the engines will keep on running. How can I do this procedure if my engine keeps dying on me? It's a 2006 legacy, Thanks
Another very helpful video. Worked perfectly but I didn't clean the throttle body yet - it's on the to-do list when I change the timing belt/water pump.
Man I LOVE your videos. This solved my issue after a clutch/head gasket job. I started the car up after buttoning it up, and it just sound BAD. Thank you so much!!
Thanks for this video. I Recently replaced spark plugs on my 2010 Subaru Forester and then was having idling issues, the engine would stall out at a stop. This procedure fix the problem thanks again.
That explains why my idle has been rough since I had the battery out for fixing an oil leak coming from the oil filler neck o-ring. Should I perform the relearn procedure as is or should I wait to properly clean the throttle body and only do it after that?
For maintenance, I cleaned the TB and then followed this procedure. Magically, the ABS, brake and one other light that was lit up on the dash for a few years finally went away. It was a problem I could never determine the cause of.
If you ever re-make this video, it might be a good idea to mention that the windows may need to re-learn too. Fortunately I already knew about that, though I had forgotten until I went to adjust the front-passenger window from the driver-side controls. I could see that some folks might panic and think their window is broken... as I did until I remembered 😆 Maybe add a mention as a pinned comment or to the video description? As always, I appreciate what you do!
This is after I disconnect and reinstall my throttle body with a new gasket after cleaning it and getting the dirt off right it's for my 2008 impreza 2.5i naturally aspirated rubaru
On Infiniti/Nissan cars, there’s 2 way to do idle relearn. First is to do sequence pedal pumping and key ignition on off etc (no tools required) or the 2nd one , just remove the negative battery cable and let it disconnected for 10-15 mins. Once restarted, the ECU will automatically relearn the air coming through the plate by reading the throttle plate sensor. I’m just wondering if the last part for Subaru is necessarily. Like turning it off 10 mins for the 2nd time etc….you don’t need to run it either on the hwy unless you’re cleaning the upper engine for carbon deposit. Thus it’s called idle relearn. Just idling..
After a headgasket job on a 11’ WRX I couldn’t get the CEL out. I forgot to do this process. Reason for the light was, i did not wait the 10sec for the throttle body sweep. Did the proper relearn as this shows and bam, no CEL. The computers are THAT picky.
This procedure is for 2005+ Subarus with the drive-by-wire, electronic, throttle body.
Great video!! I have 2005 Forester 2.5x MT and the car doesn't have a rough idle but when accelerating it bogs and loses power.
Same procedure I used today when replacing 2014 Outback battery. Worked perfectly
Thanks again for this video. It got my 2008 Impreza to drive tolerably without dying at stops after the battery died
Fixed the old lady's Subaru today using this video as a guide, much appreciated! 🚙
Going from a CVPI to the 2011 Outback I have now is nuts. The engine bay alone gives me hope of less blood pressure spikes when I need to do maintenance 🤣 I am actually really excited, and your videos are super in depth, thank you!
Thank you for this. Thought my 2013 Forester’s transmission was going out, it would shift so hard. Drives like a different car now.
Just put in a new battery and was wondering why my car would keep stalling. This helped. Thanks.
Changed the spark plugs today and had the idle issue .
Thank you for this worked like a dream .
You're welcome. 👍🏻
Thank you, easy to follow. They way he paused after "wait 20 seconds" I thought we were waiting a full 20 seconds :D. Good stuff.
instead of waiting 10-30 minutes do you think it would speed up the process to hit the brake light to drain any residual electricity? just a thought
This fixed my rough idle and somehow took my car out of limp mode after a Cobb sf intake install and cleaning the maf sensor with spray. Thank you!
Thank you from Southern California
just did this on my '12 legacy, have not test drove it yet, but reading the comments is getting me excited to see how it does
That’s funny I just replaced my idle air control valve yesterday, and RUclips recommends this video🧐
I tried to take my IACV out so I could clean it but the screws were so tight I started to burr them so I just left it all as is lol
Item69
Ya I heard they tend to do that, lucky for me they came out without any issues.
VIsubby
My 2002 uses idle air control valve
And that’s what I’ve replaced.
Silent Russian your 2002 is drive by cable
Your phone listens to you!!
Dude you are a god to all Subaru owners having issues, thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you so much, this fixed my idle problem!
I disconnected my battery to work on some wiring... Reconnected it and immediately noticed that it felt like I was driving a manual when Id stop and go.
Found this, and it fixed it!!!
Thankful for the Internet and you.
Glad to help. 👍🏻
260 km on what, 35 liters of LPG, PLUS half a tank of euro98 petrol :(
Thank you! I just did my top end cleaning and realized I had completely forgotten how to do this!
This worked great on my 2010 Subaru Legacy thank you so much, you’re the best you are truly a Subaru professional
My outback 2011 is running great again, thank you so much "subaru master"!!!
You're welcome 👍🏻
MAN THANKS SO MUCH GOT A 2009 SUBARU TRIBECA LOVE MY SUV THIS REALLY WORKED YOU THE BEST 💯
Worked perfectly on my 2013 Scion FRS. Saved me time, money, and grief! Subscribed.
You're welcome. 👍🏻
Odd. No other issues, CEL, etc?
No CEL. I do not know how to properly check the IAC to ensure it’s working..I am guessing that maybe that could be it but don’t want to have one shipped down without checking it
@@MGoCaribbeanBlue usually they give a code when they fail.
Thanks so much for the replies. I will keep digging..keep the vids coming. I loved the new Milwaukee impact review you just. Much love brother
Just brought back 2 subaru's from the brink of mediocrity, thank you so much for this video!!
I have a 2009 liberty, this worked a charm Thankyou
Why, why does Subaru do this? Disconnect the battery for a routine plug change and then crap idle. Judging by the comments you’ve saved the day over and over again, thanks for taking the time. I guess this needs to be done any time the battery is disconnected in the future.
Loved the video and well-explained instructions. Easiest thing I've done on my car besides cleaning the outside windows -- thank you!!
I had a very similar issue with idle when coming to a stop in a 2013 scion fr-s. I would hear a clacking noise when the idle drop happened. Cleaning the throttle body didn't fix the idle problem. I think it was due to the valve spring recall for this model year.
Thank you from 2021! It worked on our 2011 Subaru Forester JDM!
I changed my spark plugs yesterday, the battery was out of the car for a few houres.
After starting the car for the first time, it couldn't even hold itself on idle.
Only when pressing the gas pedal the engines will keep on running.
How can I do this procedure if my engine keeps dying on me?
It's a 2006 legacy,
Thanks
Very informative video, i had the same problem after jump starting my car in neutral, these steps fixed the issue straight away thanks a lot
Thanks! I love my 2007 Subaru Forester, and was sad when I had this issue. I knew about resets, so your fix came up on my first search, so thanks!
Thank you sir, You saved me a lot of hassle with this video.
Thank you so much my car now runs again. This definitely deserves a subscribe thanks again.
Thanks for this video. I Recently replaced spark plugs on my 2010 Subaru Forester and then was having idling issues, the engine would stall out at a stop. This procedure fix the problem thanks again.
After switching sensor after sensor and cleaning intakes and tb, simple process clears the issues. Preciate that help
My 1999 subaru b4 twin turbo got rough 😞idle for about 2 years but thanks for the video man Damm works fine now
Thanks so much, Mr. Subaru!! Always love your videos - so indispensable!
That explains why my idle has been rough since I had the battery out for fixing an oil leak coming from the oil filler neck o-ring. Should I perform the relearn procedure as is or should I wait to properly clean the throttle body and only do it after that?
Clean the TB before doing the relearn.
@@MrSubaru1387 Hey,
Is their a video for cleaning the thottle body? Great video!
@@717273mopar ruclips.net/video/H-YfyXyPvrE/видео.html
My FR-S was stalling every time I came to a stop. After this procedure, it doesn’t stall and idles super smooth.
Thank you for your informative video, followed the procedure and now my 09 forester idles beautifully.
For maintenance, I cleaned the TB and then followed this procedure. Magically, the ABS, brake and one other light that was lit up on the dash for a few years finally went away. It was a problem I could never determine the cause of.
NICE! Great resource - solved my post-alternator swap idling issue. Thanks.
Glad it helped
Thank you for this .. helped me out 3 days before Christmas!
You’re welcome!
You saved me $$$$ 2012 Forester wouldn't start did what you said it started and is running great ty ty ty
Thank you! Had this issue after mechanic replaced spark plug and wires. This worked on my 2008 Subaru Outback!
You and your videos are a wonderful God-send. Blessings and sincere "thank yous" for all your efforts.
Thanks, been working on my dad’s 2014 outback, just what I needed!
If you ever re-make this video, it might be a good idea to mention that the windows may need to re-learn too. Fortunately I already knew about that, though I had forgotten until I went to adjust the front-passenger window from the driver-side controls. I could see that some folks might panic and think their window is broken... as I did until I remembered 😆
Maybe add a mention as a pinned comment or to the video description? As always, I appreciate what you do!
Thank you soooooooooo much for this video! You saved me $$$ and a trip to my mechanic!
just saw this and will try it in the morning as I disconnected my battery when I/my son installed a light bar will post results tommorrow
Thank you for this. I changed my oxygen sensors but my check engine light came on a couple months later. This fixed it.
Every one of your videos is pure gold!
2019 Subaru Crosstrek worked perfectly. 06/21/24
Your a legend, so simple and fixed all my funny issues post engine swap.
This helped dial in the idle. Thanks for the video
Thanks!
