I can’t believe that people are using a 1 month tournament to discredit Vinicius Junior from the Ballon Dor race. In an international year, these major competitions do play a significant role no matter how good of a season a player has at club level since international football is equally as important as club football in the Ballon Dor race, at the same time it’s recency bias when you’re ignoring the entire season and downplay it for a 6 or 7 game tournament. He wasn’t at his best at the Copa América as yes he was suspended for the quarterfinals when Brazil were knocked out by Uruguay and ok part of that is his fault even though the team as a whole sucked whether you like it or not, Vini deserves the Ballon Dor over Jude Bellingham and Rodri. Part of why some people should back him to win this award over those 2 despite being elite midfielders is the fact that players who are flashy attract great appeal to fans and pundits where in any moment of a game they can pull off an audacious trick that is unexpected and he’s that type of player to do that and since he’s an attacker, he scores a lot of goals in big moments. He’s an enjoyable player to watch when he has the ball and he has that individual flair and brilliance that has been missing with players in today’s game. For someone who missed 2-3 months with injuries, 24 goals and 11 assists 35 G/A in all competitions is a good return and can you imagine what his numbers would’ve looked like if he stayed fit all season. He produced a lot of match winning displays which were key to Real Madrid winning a lot of trophies last season as in the champions league knockout stages in the latter stages of the competition got a G/A from the RD of 16 to the final itself including 3 goals and 2 assists against the likes of Manchester City Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund not to mention his brilliant hat trick against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and he destroyed them which ended up securing the league title for them as well. In terms of individual ability and big game performances Vini was the best player in the world in that regard and the impact a player has on their team combined with how they perform in big games are key factors in the Ballon Dor race. While Jude Bellingham had a great season in La Liga and he also played well in the Champions League and was part of an England team that made the final of the EUROs where he had his moments, for someone in the conversation to be the best player in the world, he wasn’t as impactful as Vini in a lot of these big games in the Champions League and in he’s clearly a better footballer than him purely off the eye test. He is still the frontrunner to win the Ballon Dor and had England won the EUROs, it would’ve been a different conversation even though that’s not how we should perceive an award that’s all about who’s had a great season individually.

The reality is Vini attracts criticism because he simultaneously rightfully calls out racism but also plays the race card far too often when it’s not necessary. Likewise, regardless of race related issues, he does stuff like simultaneously blatantly diving while also very theatrically confronting opponents who also dive. In UCL his bad performance against Madrid is one of the reasons ManCity didn't win it. Freddie Adu was a good shout. The guy played for 15 different clubs spanning 17 years between 2004 and 2021, finishing at Österlen in the Swedish league and before that in the USL, the second tier of US football. Thats some falloff from Benfica and Monaco where he had very brief spells earlier in his career considering all the hype there was around him. I hope for his sake the USFA and his MLS club don’t ruin Cavan Sullivan before he’s even got going. He’s only 14 and being hugely hyped up. It was never always going to be easy for Haaland to replicate his heroics in the 2022-23 season because yes he managed to drop off a little bit and at times he was inconsistent missed a lot of chances that he would usually be converting and there were a lot of big games where he made little to no impact on the team; as an elite striker, the reality is that he’s guaranteed to score goals and he is doing his job and puts the ball in the back of the net at a staggering rate. Next season is the same story for Haaland in front of goal.

I can’t believe that people are using a 1 month tournament to discredit Vinicius Junior from the Ballon Dor race. In an international year, these major competitions do play a significant role no matter how good of a season a player has at club level since international football is equally as important as club football in the Ballon Dor race, at the same time it’s recency bias when you’re ignoring the entire season and downplay it for a 6 or 7 game tournament. He wasn’t at his best at the Copa América as yes he was suspended for the quarterfinals when Brazil were knocked out by Uruguay and ok part of that is his fault even though the team as a whole sucked whether you like it or not, Vini deserves the Ballon Dor over Jude Bellingham and Rodri.
Part of why some people should back him to win this award over those 2 despite being elite midfielders is the fact that players who are flashy attract great appeal to fans and pundits where in any moment of a game they can pull off an audacious trick that is unexpected and he’s that type of player to do that and since he’s an attacker, he scores a lot of goals in big moments. He’s an enjoyable player to watch when he has the ball and he has that individual flair and brilliance that has been missing with players in today’s game. It’s not even just about his attractive style of play, his consistent performances contributed to winning football. For someone who missed 2-3 months with injuries, 24 goals and 11 assists 35 G/A in all competitions is a good return and can you imagine what his numbers would’ve looked like if he stayed fit all season. He produced a lot of match winning displays which were key to Real Madrid winning a lot of trophies last season as in the champions league knockout stages in the latter stages of the competition got a G/A from the RD of 16 to the final itself including 3 goals and 2 assists against the likes of Manchester City Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund not to mention his brilliant hat trick against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and he destroyed them which ended up securing the league title for them as well. In terms of individual ability and big game performances Vini was the best player in the world in that regard and the impact a player has on their team combined with how they perform in big games are key factors in the Ballon Dor race. While Jude Bellingham had a great season in La Liga and he also played well in the Champions League and was part of an England team that made the final of the EUROs where he had his moments, for someone in the conversation to be the best player in the world, he wasn’t as impactful as Vini in a lot of these big games in the Champions League and in he’s clearly a better footballer than him purely off the eye test. He is still the frontrunner to win the Ballon Dor and had England won the EUROs, it would’ve been a different conversation even though that’s not how we should perceive an award that’s all about who’s had a great season individually.

Freddie Adu was a good shout. The guy played for 15 different clubs spanning 17 years between 2004 and 2021, finishing at Österlen in the Swedish league and before that in the USL, the second tier of US football. I think this is the only time that I’ve ever agreed with frank. Carvajal deserves it. Most people forget, or don’t even know, that Carvajal has STARTED and won 6 champions league finals. You don’t start 6 finals if you are not important. Dani makes crazy assists and starts crazy plays. Unfortunately like they said, right back ain’t sexy.

It was never always going to be easy for Haaland to replicate his heroics in the 2022-23 season because yes he managed to drop off a little bit and at times he was inconsistent missed a lot of chances that he would usually be converting and there were a lot of big games where he made little to no impact on the team; as an elite striker, the reality is that he’s guaranteed to score goals and he is doing his job and puts the ball in the back of the net at a staggering rate. Next season is the same story for Haaland in front of goal.
Even last season when he came second in Ballon Dor voting, he wasn’t even the most impactful player on his team. I’m sorry but his big game track record isn’t impressive at all for a player of his caliber and unfortunately for him that’s what wins you these awards. Harry Kane is far more rounded player than he is and he’s not even going to win this season despite putting up monster numbers. Haaland will win a Ballon Dor when he shows the world he can get it done when the lights are the at their brightest.

Stop lying...Rodri wasn't even the best player for any of the two. PHILL FODEN was voted the best player in their league and we all saw that Lamine, Nico and Olmo were the ones carrying Spain. Rodri lost to Real Madrid and Man United in City's most important games of the season. Spain played better and even won the final with him off the pitch. Now remove Vini from both club and country and see that they don't go anywhere without him. He had 2 assists in the UCL vs Rodri's city, 2 Goals in the UCL semi's and a goal in the UCL final. Brazil's top goal scorer in the Copa and missed the knockout match that got them out of the competition through a yellow that was bogus. I can also make the same argument for Carvajal who was instrumental for both club and country. He scored the winning goal in the UCL final, scored in the Euro's and also scored crucial goals in the League. He won every single trophy available for him this season except for the Copa Del Rey.
