With you sister! I’m a size 16 and while I love our girl Emily, it bums me out that I can’t figure out how to translate her tips into what I can wear 😞
I find that body shape content isn’t helpful either. Plus sizes are never used as examples! They all look thin to me, with my fupa, thick thighs and ample rear end.
I love your style! I’m trying to keep up with the times and not look weird! I’m 53 and don’t want to wear grandma clothes, but at the same time I don’t want to look too young! I want classy! Can you make a video for us old gals PLEASE!
I love to mix and match within my wardrobe. I’m 52, and I have pieces that are from the 70s to somewhat recent “new” times. Since fashion is so cyclical, and I live in a four-season state, I get a lot of variety simply by layering.
Yes please! I would love to see longer videos with more info on each possible style and please add the appropriate accessories that fit that vibe. That would be super helpful! I love your explanations-they are very clear and precise.
glad i found you i'm 34 and alt fashion is my life but trying to curate a capsule classy alt wardrobe that's multi seasonal with the odd statement item still
Love it. And I'd love longer videos with additional examples, maybe street style inspiration with explanation. It's okay if some of the outfits repeat once in a while.
I've been working on a big overhaul to my wardrobe thanks to your videos, and I've received so many compliments. Getting ready in the morning is easier and I feel much more attractive and confident, which in turn leads to me to be more confident socially, which has been leading to me making more new friends and connections. Thank you for all of your guides and tips! It may not feel like it, but they are actually life-changing for some of us!
Yesterday I sandwiched western and ripped jeans. Light denim wash western shirt, super ripped and distressed light wash jeans, and a light tan pair of suede western booties. Didn’t think it would work but I loved it!! I hit the denim on denim trend and the western trend in one! Plus all the blue and booties made me look taller😂
yes i tried western for the first time thanks to Emily. I have plenty of western but was wearing it only when folks couldn't see me. now i wear it out. thank you!
Omg, it took 50 years to hear that there was a name for my style!! Awesome video, nicely summed up. Can’t wait to watch the other linked videos on this topic.
Love it! So important. As I have matured i now get the importance of a lead singer in the outfit - so there is the contrast. Thanks for driving this home. 👍💃✨
Please tackle keeping it fresh as you age! Love an edgier style- but want to translate it gracefully as the body and style matures- but also honor a youthful mindset.
Thanks to your guidance, I just packed for two weeks in Rio de Janeiro in a single suitcase plus a daypack. Jeans, black pants, tee shirts (short sleeved and sleeveless), neck scarves, and two "fancy" tops (for over the black) for giving a speech and receiving an award. TA DA! Looked great, felt comfortable. Thanks for your help! Or as they say in Brazil, Obragada!
Yes, please, more videos like this! I love this video because it acknowledges that we aren't all ONE fashion style or aesthetic and it helps us put together outfits that are truly ours and unique. For example, love mixing 90s minimalism with a smidge of classic or boho. It suits the climate, gives me a few pieces for colder weather, and guarantees that I always have classics in my closet for business occasions.
Yes, exactly! We are not all the same so our style should reflect our unique combos. Love the 90's minimalism with classic/boho! :-) Thanks for sharing Kerra!
I am mid-50's and need to make changes to my wardrobe to reflect that I look more mature now, (I have gone grey over the last couple of years) but I still want to "look with it" and not frumpy dumpy and invisible. This is a great video, for anyone who wants to give their wardrobe an overhaul. Start with your classic items, get rid of any that are past their best and add a few new ones. Then add your chosen flavour/style. I am not naturally "Edgy". I suit and prefer a more soft, natural, romantic look, so for me, something as simple and subtle as black nail varnish would give me an unexpected edgy and modern vibe. I have a fitted denim dress which I sometimes wear with black tights and soft black leather ankle boots, for a natural/trendy look and if I add some black nail varnish, it would definately tip it into a subtle edgy (and for me), unexpected look. Thanks for the inspiration. It is good to get out of our comfort zone and have a play with our wardrobes.
Finally, my style on RUclips! Thank you I too never enjoyed the herd mentality, though I might adapt/adopt certain elements. A well thought out view of the world is also imperative. On a superficial note, I wish I had your hair, but mine has thinned over the decades.Appreciate while you still have it 😉
Oh, so hey, I'm an edgy classic! So please bring it. Examples for inspiration appreciated. This was helpful already to seeing an intention in my taste and setting a goal.
Love your channel. Your videos are great. I have watched many of your videos and see that theyare geared around cold weather looks. Can you do a summer edgy capsule wardrobe video / European style and maybe a gothy summer capsule wardrobe video. 🖤
Loving this series, your tips and the Fashion Friends newsletter! I'm enjoying this week's 'homework' as I realised a lot of the tips are things I already do without thinking about it - a pant suit but make it wide leg and a little slouchy, worn with sneakers or chunky edgy boots; monochromatic with a pop of colour in a shoe or my watch / tracker band; mixing textures to make a black and white or monochromatic outfit look less flat... who knew I actually had fashion sense?! LOL
This is a perfect explanation of adding edge to classic. When I want a swaggy look, I add one thing edgy. That edge usually comes from my shoes. My clothes lean classic and preppy but my outfit never looks that way. Always love the vids. I havent watched in a while since I have an 8mo old but Ive been missing my weekly Wheatley. Mom joke😅
I needed this in my head edgy for me just is the boots in the motorcycle jacket which I own several of, can you post some more outfits or like some basic pieces do you think every classy as your wardrobe should have
I think your content can fit any style. This information is invaluable to the viewer. It helps so much in creating a wardrobe that you can be comfortable and confident! I’m so happy to be a part of your community ❤
Hi from Canada! Love your vibe and this channel (subscribed a few years ago). I'm almost 60, 5'8", slim-ish, kind of a bit of meno tummy happening. I would love to see actual pictures of older women wearing edgy outfits... When I try, I start to feel silly or it's not "age appropriate" (i know, i know 😄). I also live in a pretty casual area, so I'm a little chicken and try "a bit" (maybe bigger interesting earrings or a bow in the hair) but I think I want to go a little harder. Of course I have combat boots (love them). I like to play in my wardrobe, try different combinations, but I think i need more solid suggestions. Would love to hear from y'all! Thank you!
I follow a few good examples on Instagram so I'll show some examples in a video soon. And you know what I'm going to say, you can be edgy at any age :-) You got this!
I have a good understanding of the concept. I guess my question is if you see a "Law of Diminishing Returns" effect if you jump around between sandwich styles? I always enjoy an occasional experiment with a style but am finding that my wardrobe is getting a little out of hand. My classic basics are pretty standard, but are there a general number of pieces that you think are optimal for a manageable Edgy Chic wardrobe? Loved the Comme de Garcon Chuck Taylor's by the way...FUN shoes! 🙂
Interesting/helpful commentary. What once upon a time was “edgy”, i.e. a blazer with jeans or a feminine dress with a denim trucker jacket, has become obsequious and of course “edgeless” and thus time to ratchet up the “new” edge …again, thought provoking
To truly be edgy, you have to be comfortable standing out from the crowd. I live in the UK, here, not many people are, prefering to wear jeans and dark neutrals. I used to work in a clothes shop that sold hats, including 1920's style cloche hats. Young women in their 20's came in and tried them on. They looked fab and loved them, but would not buy one to wear. Why? Because no one else was wearing them. Despite looking amazing in them, they didn't want to stand out. Alli t takes is for one person to start wearing them and other women would see how good they look and voila a new trend is born.
@@softsophisticate you’re so right! Seeing someone dress “for themselves”, however it may look, is always the best way to go and I think most of us appreciate that unique self-assuredness.
Great way to present a clearer understanding of steps to finding our own style expression. Love the sandwich metaphor. While studying Japanese culture I learned about a term called Wabi-Sabi. This greatly influenced my work as an artist-I believe this is another way to look at approaching style and fashion. I often see some Japanese minimalism influences in your clothing choices so you might like exploring the Wabi-Sabi way😘
I just discovered your channel and .... YAY! Seriously this is the stuff I've been looking for. Subscribed immediately and 100% binging everything you've ever done.
That's totally fine. I have the same problem. Good thing is that a lot of styles overlap and work together. That's why it's great when you have the classic foundation because then you can bring in whatever styles you want as contrasts. If you really want to pair down though, just choose the 2 or 3 that work best with your everyday life and you grab for most.
Love your approach so much. As I'm in my late 20s I do want to incorporate more classics but I can't subscribe to the mainstream classic approach of head to toe classic pieces, it feels too stuffy for me, personally. My personal vision would be in the direction of the floral dress with the blazer and Converse: A bit of classic, a bit of gothic romance, a bit of grunge.
I know that you live in the Pacific Northwest but some of us live where it’s hot. You seem to show lots of outfits with sleeves and jackets for summer. Unfortunately I can’t wear all those layers here. Could you do some videos on capsules for warmer weather?
I'm just watching a movie with an actress who I thought was you! She possesses a similar beauty to yours when she wears short, edgy hairstyles; her name is Kathleen Robertson.
Love this SO MUCH. Please definitely do more videos on this! I would love it if you could go into more detail in future videos and talk about some example outfits, too. BTW I am such a basic jeans + black shirt/shoes/accessories person when it comes to my outfit formula, particularly on the days when I don't feel like thinking about it too much, **but** I love color so much! I find this turns into a conflict sometimes--any ideas?
If you're foundation is black that is fantastic. You can easily throw in some color with layering pieces or accessories or even your bottoms. This is why having a neutral foundation is so beneficial because you can really have some fun bringing in your own creativity with out having to change everything.
Hey Emily, very useful video!! I would like to learn how to style a sweatshirt and still look not homey but wuite chick, I am thinkimg to style a cropped sweatshirt with split leggings and heels, there are no videos on YT about styling sweatshirts, would be great if you made one!:)
Great video Emily! It's always the 'meat' in the sandwich that makes it an individual outfit as far as I can tell. When I dress head to toe in one designer, or from one collection even, it's easy but it gets old pretty quickly since I haven't put any of my creativity into it. I love how you encourage us to build our own sandwich...someone else might make it with a little too much mustard! 🙃
Yes please. Do you have tips for a tummy challenge. Never comfortable w things tucked in.😞😚
Ditto xx
I'm in the same boat.
me too. highwaisted too. can't wear belts or tuck anything in.

I find that body shape content isn’t helpful either. Plus sizes are never used as examples! They all look thin to me, with my fupa, thick thighs and ample rear end.
As always Emily..another great video!! I'm 66 and still check the mirror and think of you.. smile...
So do I with 55.

I just found your channel and I have, amazingly, found a fashion home. LOVE LOVE LOVE what you are doing. My closet and I bow to your brilliance!
