When my father died it took me 2 days to cry. He was already cremated, I made sure my mom was fine, my brothers were fine, I even lead the mourning prayers when we got home.
It hit me when I pulled out my keys and saw the old key ring my dad gave me 15 years prior.
I literally collapsed on the floor crying like a baby.

I was personally never close with any of my older relatives. When they died i didn't really feel anything whereas everybody else was sobbing. I sometimes wonder when my mom passes away if i'll actually cry? If my dad passed away tomorrow would i breakdown? Probably not, not to say i wouldn't be devastated but it would more or less result in my already severe depression being even worse.

also why Himmel's death struck Frieren so hard so suddenly ,was because she was perfectly at peace with Flamme's death BECAUSE she got to understand Flamme till the very end by being her apprentice, despite her never putting any thought to it . She thought it's just gonna be like Flamme's passing again, only to realize this time it's actually different.

Possible because she lived together with Flamme at least 50 years or more, maybe; and, with Himmel and the other heroes, only 10 years (she regrets it saying that in the funeral). Also, that's the indirect reason (possible) that she stayed with Heiter the last years of his life and accepted raising Fern and included Stark, recommended by Eisen.

The anime was the same as the manga for me: I knew Himmel for all of like 5 minutes, and yet his funeral and every memory Frieren has of him afterwards absolutely destroys me, as if I had watched an entire 100 episode anime of them together on their quest to kill the demon lord. I still don't know if I'm just overly empathic towards fictional characters, or if the writing was just so good to make me feel like this for a character with so little screentime.

Having watched the entire anime, I can now fully appreciate how fucking momentous and rare it is for Frieren to, not only show sadness, but openly weep during this scene. Elves truly struggle to understand and express emotions like humans do. How deep her sorrow must have been, then, that Frieren would cry with such humanity in this moment over the realization that she has squandered the fleeting years she could have had with Himmel. The years she did spend by his side was only a tiny fraction of her lifetime, but they changed her so profoundly that the ripple effects of that touched the lives of countless people for years to come.

It is so endearing seeing how the anime handles the feeling of loss. Everyone who has had someone very important to them pass away can confirm, that this emotion is far more complex than just "sadness", as it is often portrayed in media. At first, it's usually just an overpowering numbness, like the brain blocking out any semblance of emotion to be able to assess the situation logically as a coping mechanism. It takes a few hours, sometimes even days of processing before the floodgates break and all those emotions burst out, all of the regrets, all of the memories, everything at once.

I think the reason why Himmel put so many statues of himself was not out of vanity, but love - so Frieren wouldn't forget him. Himmel understood that 10 years was not even a blink of an eye for Frieren and she will forget him at some point, at least he thought she would. He knew Frieren wasn't going to fall for him but he was hopelessly in love with her. Now as she reflects back on her time with Himmel she's starting to pick up on all the things he said and did for her. It's a very endearing love story.

The Death of Himmel is like the Battle of Yavin. Part of a calendar or timeline? So thousands of years before the Death of Himmel, it was an epic era? The demons could just be mutated humans, elves, and demi-humans devoid of emotions? No telling what the Demon King before the Demon King was like. Imagine the demon alliance with dragons and angels fighting the Gods and Titans of Old.

This weirdly reminded me of my grandpa. It wasn't long ago in fact it was a couple months, throughout his wake I thought it was weird how everyone was crying and sobbing their hearts out during their goodbye speeches, I thought I was being a weird kid for not even tearing up when I delivered mine and figured I just didn't care because I didn't see him often. But it wasn't until it dawned on me, emotionally at least, that yeah he was really gone, all those memories we made with him for the last decade stops here, I kept convincing myself I already knew this and only after that did I become a sobbing mess. I guess it's normal for late reactions, I was still processing it and didn't quite grasp it until I did, only then did I realize how precious those memories of when we did see each other back when he was alive precious, I wish I didn't take him for granted.

I have a teory. Himmel lived much less than Heiter (Heiter lived over 20 years more despite being older than Himmel), and that was because of a curse placed upon him by the demon king before his defeat. He was cursed to dying early in life as soon as he met his loved one one last time, so they didn't have time to tell each other their true feelings.

God dude, I wanted to watch this because of the synopsis, now seeing what people said in the comments of her realizing he’s gone hit me like a truck, it took me many many months and to watch my uncles ashes burn in a Viking bonfire to be spread over my family ranch for me to realize, he was truly gone, it made me reflect not getting to spend more time with him, and later to remember he died the same year I graduated highschool, the 27th of November 2017, I cried like a damned fool, some pieces of his ashes were spread in tiny flasks for his kin and I got one, and some of his ashes were placed on our ranch at this rock tree (tree growing out of a large boulder). Awhile after he passed, we went up there one day and the area around the tree in the dead of winter was warm, and we got reception. Sooo that got me to cry again….

A while back I was hanging out with my girlfriend and we went to a grocery store to pick up some groceries because her dad was cooking. My mom worked at the grocery store and when I saw her she said she had to tell me something but the she started crying and said she would tell me later. When my girlfriend and I got back to her house I said to my girlfriend “I have a feeling my dog died” she said not to think like that and that it will be fine. When my mom got off work she came to my girlfriend’s house. I asked my girlfriend to stay inside. I went out to the car and I was right. My dog died. I didn’t want to cry and I tried my best not to. My girlfriend could tell I was upset. I wouldn’t hug her because I knew I would cry. She hugged me anyway and I cried. The worst part was going home and not seeing my dog waiting there.
Sorry felt like typing this. I think it helped.

You know how the author made Himmel always lived in her life? By writing in the beginning of new chapter like "Thirty years of Hero Himmel passing", "Thirty five years after Hero Himmel passed away"..
That sentence for me made that Frieren's after journey, each day she remember about Himmel..
