When my father died it took me 2 days to cry. He was already cremated, I made sure my mom was fine, my brothers were fine, I even lead the mourning prayers when we got home.
It hit me when I pulled out my keys and saw the old key ring my dad gave me 15 years prior.

I was personally never close with any of my older relatives. When they died i didn't really feel anything whereas everybody else was sobbing. I sometimes wonder when my mom passes away if i'll actually cry? If my dad passed away tomorrow would i breakdown? Probably not, not to say i wouldn't be devastated but it would more or less result in my already severe depression being even worse.

also why Himmel's death struck Frieren so hard so suddenly ,was because she was perfectly at peace with Flamme's death BECAUSE she got to understand Flamme till the very end by being her apprentice, despite her never putting any thought to it . She thought it's just gonna be like Flamme's passing again, only to realize this time it's actually different.

Possible because she lived together with Flamme at least 50 years or more, maybe; and, with Himmel and the other heroes, only 10 years (she regrets it saying that in the funeral). Also, that's the indirect reason (possible) that she stayed with Heiter the last years of his life and accepted raising Fern and included Stark, recommended by Eisen.

I still don't know if I'm just overly empathic towards fictional characters, or if the writing was just so good to make me feel like this for a character with so little screentime.

Having watched the entire anime, I can now fully appreciate how fucking momentous and rare it is for Frieren to, not only show sadness, but openly weep during this scene. Elves truly struggle to understand and express emotions like humans do. How deep her sorrow must have been, then, that Frieren would cry with such humanity in this moment over the realization that she has squandered the fleeting years she could have had with Himmel. The years she did spend by his side was only a tiny fraction of her lifetime, but they changed her so profoundly that the ripple effects of that touched the lives of countless people for years to come.

It is so endearing seeing how the anime handles the feeling of loss. Everyone who has had someone very important to them pass away can confirm, that this emotion is far more complex than just "sadness", as it is often portrayed in media. At first, it's usually just an overpowering numbness, like the brain blocking out any semblance of emotion to be able to assess the situation logically as a coping mechanism. It takes a few hours, sometimes even days of processing before the floodgates break and all those emotions burst out, all of the regrets, all of the memories, everything at once.

I think the reason why Himmel put so many statues of himself was not out of vanity, but love - so Frieren wouldn't forget him. Himmel understood that 10 years was not even a blink of an eye for Frieren and she will forget him at some point, at least he thought she would. He knew Frieren wasn't going to fall for him but he was hopelessly in love with her. Now as she reflects back on her time with Himmel she's starting to pick up on all the things he said and did for her. It's a very endearing love story.

albeit a very bittersweet one. it used to make me wonder how a man who led the party to kill the demon king, doesn't have any family right after their journey ended, but watching this alongside the signs that Himmel really loved her makes this hurt even more. He couldn't have a family because he was waiting for Frieren to be his one, but elves in this story, amirite? They take an entire millennium to process emotions than what humans can process in a minute.

i can't help but to recall an excerpt from Tolkien about how the elves first encountered man and mortality.
"And when Beor laid dead of no wound or grief; but stricken by age, the Eldar saw for the first time the swift waning of the life of men and the death of weariness that they knew not in themselves. And they grieved greatly for the lose of their friend. But Beor at the last relinquished his life willingly and passed in peace. And the Eldar wondered much at the strange fate of men for in all their lore there was no account of it and it's end was hidden from them."

Frieren is such a great story. Showing us how lonely living for thousands of years would be. People are popping in and out of existence all around her and some of them make an impact on her life while others she barely notices. She measures everything in her own time frame and it feels like people live so fast, she's barely able to take in their presence before they're gone for good.
The whole part where they meet the monk Kraft. He is Frieren in the future when people no longer remember her and the hero's party killing the Demon Lord.

Reminds me of one scene in Seven Deadly Sins, King (a fairy) and Diane (a giant) were looking after each other in a harsh world.
They spoke to a kindly human who offered them directions and shelter, King and Diane stayed in a cave for a while thanks to the kindly human. They emerged out of the cave after quite some time, spoke to a another kindly human who resembled the last one the two spoke to - only to find out that this human they were speaking to was the grandson of the human King and Diane met before going in the cave. Makes you really think about the warped sense of time between long lifers and those who barely reach 100 years old.

I love how frieren is falling in love with himmel long after his death. Now she is understanding himmel like she never did before when they were together. It doesn't matter that himmel is not present anymore, what matters is that frieren is now understanding him, appreciating him and loving him. And himmel most probably knew this and that's why he never "BETRAYED" his feelings for frieren by marrying and loving another woman which would have been a right choice. But himmel might have known that despite him not being present with frieren anymore, frieren WILL reciprocate his feelings, will appreciate him and understand him, and that is what most probably mattered to him. The assurance that even if he had died, and it might take a long time, but frieren will love him, and that's what is happening.

When my girlfriend and I got back to her house I said to my girlfriend “I have a feeling my dog died” she said not to think like that and that it will be fine. When my mom got off work she came to my girlfriend’s house. I asked my girlfriend to stay inside. I went out to the car and I was right. My dog died. I didn’t want to cry and I tried my best not to. Himmel lived much less than Heiter (Heiter lived over 20 years more despite being older than Himmel), and that was because of a curse placed upon him by the demon king before his defeat. But it wasn't until it dawned on me, emotionally at least, that yeah he was really gone, all those memories we made with him for the last decade stops here, I kept convincing myself I already knew this and only after that did I become a sobbing mess. I guess it's normal for late reactions, I was still processing it and didn't quite grasp it until I did, only then did I realize how precious those memories of when we did see each other back when he was alive precious, I wish I didn't take him for granted.

This is much the Elves in LOTR, they are immortal and live forever, they don't understand the concept of mortality. That's why they usually take forever to act on something or anything due to their not having a time limit, pretty much like ultimate procrastinators. Now of course they feel the pain and grief when losing their mortal friends due to time, and this is mostly the reason why Elves live among themselves rather than with others.

Tell the people you love you love them. It will mean so much to them, and it'll mean so much to you on reflection. It's amazing how a cartoon from Japan can be so powerful. Elves experience time differently than humans since they live so long. What's 10 years to them were just probably equivalent to what 10 days are to humans. In another word, Frieren only met this boy whom she just met for 10 days in her mind, did a lot of things with her and to her, tried to win her over. And it's not only after 50 years (50 days, or, a little bit over a month in her mind), she started to have a little bit of feeling interested towards him, he passed away. Now that you think about it like that, you can understand Frieren's psyche a little bit better why Himmel's passing was so impactful for her. Plus the fact that she had lived in the forest for a thousand years before meeting Himmel, no one has ever done what Himmel did to her in the span of that short 10 years.
