  • Tilak Devasher, renowned for his expertise on Pakistan, has authored four highly acclaimed books. His debut work, "Pakistan: Courting the Abyss" (2016), was lauded as ‘easily the best book on Pakistan' by Khaled Ahmed, a distinguished Pakistani commentator. His second book, "Pakistan: At the Helm" (2018), was described by Pakistani reviewer Mehr F. Husain in Dawn (August 26, 2018) as a book that should rest on the bedside table of any future Pakistani leader.
Muhammad Akbar Notezai of Dawn, reviewing Devasher's third book, "Pakistan: The Balochistan Conundrum" (2019), hailed it as superior to writings on the same topic by domestic academics and authors. The Dawn further acknowledged that it was “among the most well-researched and balanced books on the subject.” His latest publication, "The Pashtuns: A Contested History," (2022) has also been received well.
Having retired from his position as special secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat of the Government of India in October 2014, Devasher currently holds a seat on the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB), a 12-member body. He also serves as a consultant at the Vivekananda International Foundation.
Throughout his professional journey, he contributed significantly in various capacities in regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, and overseas. His specialization in security matters, particularly those concerning India's neighboring countries, culminated in his transition to writing after retirement. Beyond his literary works, he has penned articles for numerous newspapers, magazines, and think tank publications. Among his regular contributions are pieces for the Indian Express, Tribune, and occasional features in India Today. Additionally, he is a familiar face on television talk shows.

Shakil Chaudhary is an alumnus of Government College, Lahore. Subsequently, he studied international relations at Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad and media at the London School of Economics. He has worked for several English-language newspapers.
He has written a critically acclaimed bilingual book, Handbook of Functional English (Ferozsons), to help those who wish to improve their English skills. Prof. Tariq Rahman, one of the finest linguistic scholars in South Asia, has praised it in these words: "This book is an excellent guide for the South Asian user of the English language. It gives examples of both the British and American varieties of English and provides guidelines to avoid the common errors of most Pakistanis when they write and speak English. It is also a comprehensive guide for pronunciation, vocabulary, editing and all other aspects of English usage. It has been written with great care and attention. I recommend it to students, editors, writers and other users of English in Pakistan."
Shakil has conducted many workshops on communication, writing and critical thinking skills. He is a former president of the Progressive Writers Association, Islamabad (2021-2022).

My honest feeling is that Pakistan and India can never coexist, and Pakistan will continue to prove to be India's major headache. Truth be told, India would never like to touch Pakistan even with a bargepole, leave alone entertaining the idea of undoing the partition. For heaven's sake, leave India alone, and we will survive and thrive very well without anything to do with Pakistan.
In my honest opinion, India could become a major country if it stops placing Pakistan in any facet of life and keeps surging forward with all its internal resources at its command. The vast majority of the country, with the exception of a few like Mani Shankar Iyer, firmly holds the view that Pakistan should never feature in any aspect of life or thought. Instead, India should forge an unassailable identity of its own and become a formidable force to reckon with in the world.

Recently Pakistan blamed India for anti Christian riots in Pakistan.
For every such blame game, Indians are all the more convinced that we should not talk or trade with Pakistan.
As far as Pakistan is concerned, Indian government will not go against the sentiments of it's citizens.
Therefore, it's important for Pakistan to manage its image with Indian people if it wants normalisation of relationship with India.
First of all, Pakistan should remove hate speech against Hindus & India in it's school text books. ( India never did anything similar to that against Pakistan)

To escape their inferiority they start identifying with their captors (Stockholm syndrome) and hence call them selves Central Asians and Afghans and Arabs. Among the discussion, there's a mention of one Gen Jawed Hassan and his book. When Mr Devasher narrated the inferences by Jawed Hassan, I couldn't help but laugh. No wonder, Pakistan lost every war since its birth. Her fundamental or rather Islam's fundamental mistake has been to consider Hindus as a weak race. Pity, Pakistan has never invested in intellect. Had her scholars truly read ancient, medieval and modern Indian history, they could have avoided the laughable state they are today. History is replete with numerous examples of common Hindu defending his honor with tenacity and prevail over adversary. Ayub, Yahya, Tikka, Zia, Hamid Gul, Musharraf and their ilk are glaring examples of misplaced intelligence and priorities. Look, where they took Pakistan! They need to revisit their basic philosophy, review 'their' version of faith and recalibrate education policy. That's yesterday. Or else, they are staring at an implosion of the State and will perish for certain.

Agreed. Even the Mughal empire's nobility was 15% Hindu, mostly from Rajasthan. The rest were mainly Turkish and Persian. Very few Muslims from India were included in this small, elite group. The Sikhs won all of today's Pakistani Khyber Pakhtunwa province. The decendants of Muslims of today's Pakistan played only a minor role.

Mr. Shakil Chaudhury always picks and chooses people with common sense and logic on his shows, thus making the time spent on thevshow not a waste of time. Very open discussion based on facts and realistic status prevalent in both countries, lacking in any frivolous jingoism to ssy the least.

Zaid Hamid is a known Hindu hater, no surprise there. Most are like him in that country. What surprised me was that someone like Dr. Abdul Basit interviewed him. Dr. Basit was a high commissioner in India and is considered as an educated person. He also hates Hindus and India, but being a former diplomat one expected an open mind. May be he is desperately trying to be relevant..

The rift between India and Pakistan will grow even more. The language is diverging, the religious differences never minimise but maximise.
Then feudalism and democracy can never be bedfellows. I only pray they don't subject their masses to war.

Tilak Devasher is a real intellectual . He is an Indian but worried about Pakistan. His views about Pakistan are worth listening. Pray that his views should also reach to the policy maker of Pakistan. Both countries should forget past and engage themselves for economic betterment of their people , majority of whom are living below the poverty level.

Partition sought to establish a new nation-state that would protect political interests of Muslims. What it achieved was creation of an army that runs the country by proxy.
Am reminded of Sushant Sareen-ji's tweet, "Pakistanis have to be seriously deranged if they think India will compromise only for the 'privilege' of talking to it?"
