  • Опубликовано: 16 авг 2024
  • The talk will focus on some fundamental questions like why, for example, is Pakistan such a troubled and troublesome state? Are its problems of recent origin or are they rooted in its very genesis? ? What accounts for Pakistan’s visceral hostility towards India? What are the non-traditional threats that Pakistan faces?
    About the Speaker:-
Tilak Devasher is the author of three widely acclaimed books on Pakistan: ‘Pakistan: Courting the Abyss’, (December 2016) ‘Pakistan: At the Helm’ (July 2018), and ‘Pakistan: The Balochistan Conundrum’ (July 2019). He retired as Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat Government of India in October 2014. He is currently Member, National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) and Consultant.

*It is the Indian maulanas, muftis, the muhaddis, etc. who have supplied intellectual fodder to the violent schools of thought that have run amok in Pakistan.* Be it the Jamat e Islami, the Barelvi school, the Deoband seminary, the Ahl e Hadees, or the Tablighi Jamat, all have their main centres in India. It is the brute fact of numerical superiority of Hindus that has kept these forces from doing the same inside India what they have enacted in Pakistan.

There is noticeable economic decline amongst muslims due to the higher population growth.
Implement UNIFORM CIVIL CODE (UCC) as stipulated in our Constitution. Introduce the 2 child per couple policy for all citizens. If anyone opts for an additional child then they will have to pay for all government amenities that are provided free to all. If a couple get divorced after having one or two children; then after the next marriage they can have only one more child. This will put a check on the demographic changes taking place, as well as reduce the poverty level amongst muslims as a group. Implementing this, the Nation will prosper.

It was not Jinnah who made Pakistan - it was MK Gandhi. The threat for 'Direct Action's terror was only possible given submissive attitude of MKG. Had there been Yogi Adityanath in place of MKG, muslims would not have dared to threaten anything like direct action.muslims are He Rami but not stupid -they are very pragmatic . Muslims only assume aggressive posture when the opposition is meek (like MKG, Nehru) 💐

    Dear Tilak Sir,
I have 3 questions if you can shed some light :
    1. Why did India not seize some part of Pakistani territory during / after Kargil as a future hedge against Pakistani misadventure like Israel seized Sinai during 1967 which they gave back to Egypt in 1971 in return for long term peace ?
    2. Do you think Vajpayee ji was naive to believe he can actually go to Pakistan and achieve peace armed with only a smile and some kind words instead of some real hard bargaining leverage ?
    3. Is continued hostility with Pakistan now a permanent reality since any other relationship with it will undermine the very idea of Pakistan ?
Would love to have your inputs on the same...

Lack of understanding of statecraft by indian leaders during british india is the reason why south asia is divided. China captured tibet & xinjiang. But in Indian subcontinent, 1st british separated burma, then partition of bengal & then partition at north west. We lost territories but china gained. Right now india-7th largest country and china-4th largest.

Damn, that story of a young boy chopping off his own hands to prove his belief to a preacher was gruesome. I had no knowledge of that particular incident. It is shocking but I am no longer surprised by the extent of extremism that people adopt once this religion consumes their mind. As Tilak ji says if he is willing to do such harm to himself just to prove his faith then imagine what harm he is capable of inflicting on others in the name of the same belief.

One thing Mr. Devasher seems to not touch in his otherwise excellent analysis is the core of what is being fought over - the hearts and minds of the Indian people in Pakistan.
It would be useful to discern between the ideology of Pakistan and the state apparatus created around it on the one hand and the people of Pakistan on the other. More than anything, the ideology of Pakistan and the state apparatus built around it have been an imposition on the people of Pakistan.
The sworn enmity of the ideology and state of Pakistan to anything remotely Indian ie Hindu, even if it appears intractable at first, seems to be a mask for a barely hidden lack of confidence about the strength of the ideology over the people and a consequent need for constant validation. The constant and stressful demands on the people of Pakistan to reaffirm their allegiance only further betrays this suspicion of a lack of confidence in the commitment of the people towards the ideology.
Even more than the infidel Hindu based out of India, the state ideology and its enforcers in Pakistan get the creeps from the prospect of their own people becoming cognisant of their own, indigenous, pre-Islamic heritage. Far from solid, the ideology’s hold on the Pakistani people, beyond the few who grab the headlines, is not well understood and is probably paper-thin.
Indian strategists themselves seem to be stuck with the idea of Pakistan’s ideological hold over its people as intractable. The people in that country have sacrificed their own ancient heritage and glorious culture at the altar of the desert religion that has taken over their entire existence. As a result, they are a completely demotivated, deracinated people alienated from their own indigenous heritage and sustained only by the constant drumbeat of ideological hatred towards the Hindu, which is who they were, and really still continue to be, only not on the surface. A robust Indian effort at conserving the original culture and traditions of the people of Pakistan pre-Islam; and preservation and curation of the same would probably do much more to implode the state from within than anything a military could do.
As the US involvement in Afghanistan has proven, it is much easier to justify deployment of military resources than it is to give a thorough and properly curated, civilisational response. Same for Pakistan; it is much easier for them to play the military card against India than be faced with the terror of the glory of their own pre-Islamic heritage, and their own ancestors. Once the people get reacquainted with their own glorious indigenous heritage, the Pakistan state and its enforcers will begin to truly be seen as the impositions they are.

Hindus and Musselman have served in the British Indian Army together though under the British system of Regimentation which kept Muslims and Hindus separate at the level of soldiers. However, in battles or in military campaigns they fought together many times led by officers of both denominations. There is no scope for an old guard or new generation Pakistani general assuming Hindu Army to be cowards or week. That assumption therefore perhaps has been made on civilizational traits, the elites, rulers, and leadership. India that officer would have studied through British, Colonial, and left history writers lenses no longer exist.

Cutting of a hand is certainly horrible but we too have crazy people who after being indoctrinated by Sants and swamy's go and perform a human sacrifice. This is in all religions. This borders on insanity (and every population has their share of these people).
You have not once criticized the current regime in doing exactly what you say Pakistan does...polarize the population on religious grounds.
So credit is due to the earliest political leaders for changing the trajectory of the new nation. By developing schools and universities we have a tipping point where everyone wants to get educated (delhi is another interesting example).
Trouble is that the conventional politician is in a huge hurry to get re-elected and hence has no time for long term strategic thinking. That's the pity of our sub continent.
Enjoyed your talk and I can see that the tax payers money was not wasted on you.

What's the meaning of Faiz's poem!? TN will always remain India as long as it's Hindu Identity, temples, culture , language is protected. Cholas, pallavas took Hinduism, Bhuddism abroad. Muslims r Tamils they don't speak Urdu or Hindi ,one should feel alarmed if Urdu belt starts it's influence on them. Kerala is a serious case from 1923 Mopplah movement massacre of Hindus.

The LACK of KNOWLEDGE, world affairs and history, of the moderator 'APARNA' is appalling. This is evidenced by the factually incorrect facts and anecdotes she refers to when asking questions.
The height is that she put the 1st Education Minnister of Free India in the same quarter in which she put Sir Syed and Jinnah. I bet she will not be able to spell the full name of Maula Azad.
She should voluntarily resign or be assigned to a more fitting job function. Or she should be trained to study and be familiar with the subject matter before asking questions.
