It was described as such by Greek and Persian foreigners, Hindus described themselves as such, Hindus, and that's how the BJP is increasingly making "India" look like. In medieval times Muslim historians talked of "al Sind" and "al Hind", al Sind being Pakistan, so the difference because of religion is 1000 years old or so. And "khuda hafiz" becoming "Allah hafiz" has to do prefering Arabic over Persian culture, not Arabic over "Indian" culture, and which one ? Tamil ? Telugu ? "India" is itself using Hindu as a cultural identity marker and nationhood glue.
Whether you used to call whiskey as abc or biskey doesnot matter as long as it had an identity and so is the land of the Hindus. There was anreason the Greeks, persians called these people Hindus and that being the folks beyond the Indus had distinctive set of culture, rituals and a belief that 'aasetu himachala paryantam' (from the sea till the Himalayas) is their motherland.

The Only Parsi community of the world recides peacefully in india Only. If you ever go through the Indian epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata, you'll find that even then the idea of India as a cultural and spiritual entity existed...
