I think about Kathy what I think about John McVie. Both are incredible bass players who never got even a fraction of the recognition they deserved. I hope she knows this.
Kathy is a very humble lady with a good head on her shoulders. You have to respect people like that and I do! Thanks for sharing this interview, Kathy! I will be looking for your book in the library.
When you asked Kathy about the first time she heard a Go-go’s song on the radio, I couldn’t help but flash back to the scene in That Thing You Do with Fay and T.B. Player running down the sidewalk into Peterson’s appliance store while hearing That Thing You Do on her transistor!
How would it work now for a fledgling band, I wonder? No one would be listening for their song on the radio today. I suppose it would be more like you film your own music video, upload it to RUclips, then wake up the next morning finding out you've got 10k views and climbing.
If I worked at a grocery store and Kathy walked in I would find a way to put on Vacation, then make a fool of myself by telling her how awesome she is.
Great gal, polished bass player. Back in the day I used a stage name and had accomplished band mates, but Kathy could've played in my band anytime and anywhere!
I Had graduated Army Basic Training in 1981. I was on a weekend pass and heard "We got the Beat" on the PX sound system and stopped dead in my tracks. Been following ever since.
This is a true story, folks. I've been in the recording studio where the 'Beauty And The Beat' and the 'Vacation' albums were recorded: Plaza Sound Studios, eighth flr.-Radio City Music Hall, NYC. I was there in 1976 when 'Blondie' was recording her first album there (also with Richard Gottehrer and Rob Freeman). I was there because my brother's band was also recording an album there (also with the same producer and recording engineer). The name of the band was The Dirty Angels, and the name of the album was-'Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye'. Ms. Valentine's remarks here remind me of one song in particular on this album: "Radio". And to think it was recorded in the same studio, with the same producer and engineer as "My Lips Are Sealed". Hmm.
Funny that they looked up to her because she was the youngest member of the band but I guess because she was a real musician by the time she joined them. Everyone looks up to Fran Lebowitz but she is just a photographer who sometimes got people in awkward situations all for her own benefit. I would have told her you want to film is we don’t want to be filmed by you soy oh either so what we want or you don’t get a shot. Too many bands have looked too stupid on the cover of Rolling Stone because of Ms. Lebowitz and it could have been avoided if someone had just had the balls to tell her to kiss off.
I love the Go Go's but they're all 60+ year old millionaires who can't cut it live anymore. The now fashionable victim narrative isn't going to propel them back to stardom.
OUTSTANDING bass player. GREAT bass lines!
The book is a great read and get the audio version of it.
Love hearing Kathy reading it,
She's a great bass player! I've always felt that way about her. I'm sure people with an "ear for music" knows what I'm talking about🎶🎵
Always loved her bass lines.

Such an icon. I could listen to her all day

Sometimes I listen to Go-Go's songs but only the bass line. Ms. Valentine ROCKS!!!!

Kathy Valentine is my favorite.I admire her honesty.Tony
Just played a Go-Go’s set live from England ‘82 thru a bass heavy speaker - the bass sounds awesome! 🤟🏼💪🏼🤙🏼
My biggest teenaged crush. And she still is.
If I worked at a grocery store and Kathy walked in I would find a way to put on Vacation, then make a fool of myself by telling her how awesome she is.
I swear I've seen her at my local supermarket, but can't imagine her being at that one.

Totally Awesome Video
I love Kathy!!
That rolling stone cover was on my wall for 10 years.
Strange, she says she was the most adult and exprerienced one in the band but the same time she was the youngest one in the band.
I love Kathy V.
Kathy looked the most punk rock...
Goody good girl ❤️🎶🎶💯

Fran Lebowitz? Didn't she die in a kiln explosion at Emily Dickinson college?
Fran Lebowitz. Does that name get any more Jewish?! A Kazharian Konvert in the God's Chosen Lunatics Tribe. Enough said, alright?!
Us guys can just be glad that Fran wanted to see them in their skivvies as much as we did.
Annie Leibovitz was the photographer.
So it depended on who's periods were in sync... haha

Idk, he asked a question about the cover, she provided the answer the group has always given to that question. Nothing strange there.
