I like seeing traditional animation principles being incorporated in Blender rigs, will be sure to experiment with this in my own work :)

Just started getting into 3D a couple months ago and this channel is definitely my go to (once i made 100 donuts ofc) for learning extra tricks. Keep it up fr

Super cool, thank you! I've learned so much from you and your channel is the first place I check when I'm looking for how to do something.

There's probably a reason you wouldn't want to do it this way, but, I just parented my rig to an empty, gave the empty a "maintain volume" constraint, moved the origin point to its bottom and keyframed the scale of the empty according to the animation

lattice being offseted was such a pain, thanks for the fix (6:20)

Good introduction to lattices for newer users but this is the most needlessly complicated way to do squash and stretch. You can just add empty at the feet of the character, parent it to empty and just scale empty to get whatever you want. Or just use shape keys. But this rig is more useful if you want more control over which parts of your character scale, so you can do assymetry

The only thing unecessarily complicated is your comment

This... I really like this :), I feel that this would work great together with anime style animations, specially for the faces, although I don't know much about how hard it would be to implement such a thing.

I honestly think you should start making plushy toys out of your characters, i feel like you could start an entirely different revolution😅

Great! I don't have the 'ROOT' object in my armature and when trying to parent the squash and stretch bones my 'Keep Offset' option is greyed out, any thoughts pls?

Does this lattice method work for individual body parts?
Like instead of stretching and squashing a character's entire body, what if they're punching and you want to do an animated "Smear" affect on the arm only.

If the character has other "separate" meshes on them such as clothes, accessories, etc. They all need the lattice modifier all assigned to the same lattice right?

Did I miss something?.. how did you get the eyes to follow and not squish?

      Looking out for response

    • @iamawatcher9201

Probably because it's a separate mesh object and it doesn't have the lattice modifier like the body does. You would just need to just apply the same modifier onto it and it would work.

I set this up on one of my rigs and it works fine, however it seems to not wont to squash at an angle, instead just kind of smearing the object diagonally. did i do something wrong?
Edit: im stoopid i had the lattice modifier before the armature

does the lattice modifier export with fbx files? i'm looking to import into unreal 5... i do all my animations in blender but maybe i have to do the squishing in unreal instead?

Great video. Really helpful. But I have a really important question. Idk if I can be at peace if this isn't answered. What does the "SUS" control do in your control panel for the eyes of your character? 😅😅
