Great video Joe, Always good to see your doing well with retirement life in Thailand! keep the video coming. I like your perspective on it. Good narrative .
Thanks for watching Chris. It's only a plane ride away. Come take a look. San Felipe is great, but Thailand has a lot of spots that remind me of Baja. Especially the beach areas. I'll head to the islands soon.
@@EagerExpat I checked first-class flights: $10,000+. It's like a 30-hour process, door-to-door. I've heard it is great, though, lovely people, beautiful beaches, great food.
@@ChristiaanHartNibbrig Or do what I did with credit card bonuses. I think I paid less than $200. Way better than coach. Still coach isn't bad for a new adventure.
I have watched a handful of videos about on nut neighborhood as I am considering a move there mid 2023. Far less touristy than Asoke or Nana. Excellent narration here. Love BKK.
I'll miss your Mexico videos, but this is quite interesting. Thailand has always intrigued me, but Mexico is a necessary travel destination for me, so I loved your helpful tips. I'm surprised to see how many people are still wearing masks in Bangkok, especially outside.
Yes Mexico is a top spot to visit. But, after visiting for 50 years, I was ready for a change. This is a change for sure. I love Bangkok. They just loosened the mask requirement here in July. The last phase of the health situation ended here about a year after California. People still want to wear them. Of course they wore them in Asia for decades anyhow.
Ya, On Nut is a good value. I remember 10 years ago it seemed very far away. Today half the people get off the BTS at On Nut. I still like Phrom Phong, etc.. but it can get expensive. I took off from Bali last week. Great area. I still have a few Bali videos scheduled to come out. I try to put one out every three days. But, more Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Koh Samui being edited. I'll check out your channel for my next trip to Indonesia. Thanks man
He failed to mention Sukhumvit Soi 79 (Soi Niyom) - which is in-between Century Mall and Sukhumvit Soi 77 (Soi On-Nut) - and is DIRECTLY opposite Sukhumvit Soi 50 (but you cannot drive between those two sois). Soi 79 is only about 500 meters long, ending with a walled-in high-rise neighborhood complex called Sukhumvit Garden City Village (where I have lived since January 2005). Just before you reach SGCV - there is a nice low-rise condo complex called The Room - about 6 floors tall.
Yes, there's many choices in the area. It would be a 2 hour video to point out everything. I was just trying to show it's a great area to look at. I just enjoyed a year on Soi 77. Headed over to Soi 26 today. Thanks for watching
Nice tour of On Nut, I have a condo in the slender white complex that you see in the beginning of your video. I like the “local” flavor of On Nut as it really is pretty close to everything. I have excellent internet, the free bus that goes to IKEA is two BTS stops down, and new one is actually being built by the Sukhumvit line. Terminal 21 shopping center is at the Asoke stop. Best Beef and E-San restaurants are right there, just a nice mellow place to be.
Thanks Keone. I'm Joe. I'm really enjoying the area. I made a bunch of Baja videos in the past. Lots of videos from Thailand, but I'll have a little fun. Take it easy
Time to plan a return visit. Check out my video on getting here on Japan 1st Class. Not a bad goal if you need some time to plan. Airline points are great for 15 hour flights. I'll stand up flying San Diego to Chicago
@@EagerExpat yea man saw your video on JAL. Commented about the alcohol. I’ve flown ana first and want to fly JAL. How long you out there for? I’ll get you a beer in On Nut. Never even heard of that area.
@@RC94332 I live here now. I'm always on the road, but this will be home base. ANA is great. I flew business a few times. Too bad Cathay isn't releasing award tickets. Hopefully they will soon. I flew Cathay 1st and Business many times. Great airline. Always up for a beer

How are you dealing with the heat humidity and climate there? We're in the middle of a crazy heatwave here in SoCal and Baja you may have heard about. As long as I have strong air conditioning when I go to sleep that's all that really matters. If you don't start your day off with good sleep you're not going to have a good productive day nor is it not going to be healthy for your body and mind 😎
It's hot, but if I don't have to work outside, I'm ok. I've been to Florida and Vegas. Some people say the dry heat is better. I'm not sure. Hot is hot. It all feels about the same to me. It's not that bad. Plus I'm a night owl. I'll swim laps at 10pm then go grocery shopping. Maybe get a few beers at 11pm. Sleep till 11am. The retired life is good.
Its not bad. This has been horrible rain and flooding. A 10 year storm season. Last night I needed to meet friends. The cabs know the areas that flood on Sukhumvitt and would rather run up and down a dry street like soi 77. Can't blame them. It rained for 5 hours straight. At 6pm I headed to the train. The only area that flooded was near the entrance to the train. You had to wade through a 20 by 20 one foot puddle. Most locals carry cheap flip flops during the rainy season. Toss the shoes in the backpack and roll up the pants. Other than that I didn't see flooding in my 4 block walk. But with heavy rain for hours, no drain can keep up. On the news the worst area hit is the suburbs. Poor folks live near the canal. Not good if it rises 2 feet. A few unlucky condo garages flood, etc.. But for the most part they designed most areas for heavy rain. The problem is getting around the city the day of a major storm. It drains away in 2 or 3 hours, but it floods as its happening.
Thanks John. I've been planning the move for a few years. Once I retired I made the jump. I love to travel and Thailand will ne my home base. I love Baja and have friends and family in San Diego. But, Bangkok will be home for the near future. It's really affordable and there is plenty to see within 500 miles
Walk slowly and predictably across the roads. Running across a road in Asia is suicide. Thais will always yield on narrow roads (they are very courteous), but less so on those wider, fast-moving roads as shown in the video, where it's best to wait for a gap then walk briskly.
I envy you living so close to Cheap Charlie's. I last drank there when it was located in soi 11. Really great atmosphere and of course cheap drinks. If I return to Bangkok I'll definitely check it out. Saigon is my main go to place in S E Asias these days.
@Pi Yes, but that's almost everywhere in Bangkok. Fancy buildings next to old shop houses. I'm in Asoke as I write. Probably the richest area? They still have poor buildings 100 feet away from a rich building. Even the poor buildings have regular people. Prakanong has a slum area, but it's pretty far from OnNut. Plus, it's not unsafe. Just poor people. Compared to many US cities, Bangkok has very little crime.
Great point. Maybe because it's familiar. You walk into a food court and see 25 chicken dishes in Thai. Is it spicy, sour, etc..? Then you see the golden arches. Fries are fine once in awhile, but I didn't eat pizza everyday in California. So much good food to try in Bangkok. I already have a dozen favorites.
@@EagerExpat i was that guy! first time in hong kong when i was a rookie traveler i sought out an outback steakhouse lol. i laugh at my younger self now!
