I love when you say "Just do what makes the most sense to you" As a beginner, sometimes it's hard to wrap my brain around some of the more technical stuff, but it helps build my confidence knowing you've given the thumbs up to fudge it a little. Haha! Thanks for sharing this tutorial, I'll definitely be trying this in the near future!
April, I really enjoyed watching your video! I have a sewing hack for gathering…. I use kitchen string and a wide zig-zag stitch close to the edge of my fabric to be gathered. After attaching the gathered pieces to each other simply pull out the string; I find that you don’t have to be so careful not to break the thread while pulling to form a gather. Judy
Such a cute dress a little gathering tip if you don’t mind. In the drapery world they zig zag over really thick thread I think it’s drapery thread. This allows you to gather without your thread breaking and then after you’ve sewn things in place one little snip and you can pull the thick thread out. I hope you give this a try. I don’t gather anything anymore with out using this trick 😁
You can always make a towel for the kitchen with the rests or pillowcase for example. I mean with multiple fabric parts that is that you save over some time.
I know you dont like the non-dress form method, but thanks for this. You're actually a really good teacher with drafting and I always feel motivated to sew with your vids. 💜💜💜
Zero waste?! I'm just getting into upcycling and this idea has never occurred to me but it's such a great eco idea! Thank you so much for this tutorial!
As someone new to sewing, I've been too overwhelmed to cut into any of the nice fabric I bought (soo expensive). First glace I would've never known this projects gathers were done with the stitching as opposed to an elastic... idk if that makes sense, but your process was so calming, and very easy to absorb and learn from. thank you soo much for simplifying AND picking such a cute design to break down so thoroughly! Also the ... sewing magnet BLEW my mind. I'm sooo terrible with sewing straight so I usually don't bother even trying projects. This was a game changer ty for mentioning it
The hardest part about it is starting! ☺ I was really proud of but also embarrassed by my first sewing project. Made a big ol circle skirt out of a red sheet I found at the thrift store. It's all sorts of Frankensteined up and the hem looks atrocious! BUT, to be honest, nobody really notices! I still wear it all the time 6 years later. The thing that made me feel more confident was sewing with old sheets. That way, if I messed up, it wasn't that big of a deal because I only paid what, five bucks? 💕 Hope this helps! and remember! Practice Makes PROGRESS! 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
Another cute idea for the "pockets" is to use the fabric and make a matching little sling purse - since you have all the ruffling going on. Very cute dress again!
I just finished making a dress from this same material for my niece. I have about a yard leftover and plan on using it to create a patchwork skirt for myself. Love the look of those shoes!
I have been looking for something relatively easy to do since having a bilateral mastectomy with no reconstruction. With patterned fabrics, gathers, and the straps, this will camouflage beautifully. Plus - bonus, pockets! Thank you so much!
I was wanting to make a tiered skirt for my friend's little girl, but wasn't quite sure where to start... This definitely helped me feel more confident thank you!
The thought process with the notebook was incredibly helpful! I have made tiered dresses before and the math is always a struggle but I think your method will work great. Thank you!!
I have never sewed anything ever but they way you explained it , it seems so easy . And now i have this desire to make myself the same dress 👗 , will definitely try this out . 🖤🖤
Ive been doing a lot of 0 waste dresses and skirts for a larp I play. The theory behind it is that in the post apoc, there isnt a lot of fabric to go around, so you wanna use up every last piece, but also make it functional and even when there are zombies at the door, you deserve to feel cute.
This is SO cute! It's the first set waste pattern I've seen that i actually want to wear. I love the tiers width and the shoulder pieces. I will have to buy more fabric (or find a big piece in my stash) since I am 5'8". And I don't often see 60" woven fabrics so I'll re-do the math for 45. Thanks for "showing your work", as math teachers say. That will make it relatively easy to do. I think I'm also going to try out those shoes!
This is one of my favorite designs of yours, it's lovely. Thanks for sharing the process, this one might be within my skill level! Thanks for sharing your ideas and for giving guidance on technique! Very helpful!
I love this dress design! It's impressive that you made such a cool dress that is also 0 waste. I love a dress with pockets lol and the straps are very creative like that
This was really inspiring and well explained. Thanks for showing your thought process. I’m not making this exact dress, but it inspired me to take a pair of pants I don’t like and turn them into a dress :)
Could I make a small request? I can see in your videos when I pause/slow down that it looks like you always finish your seams properly, but you never actually mention it. Since you have a lot of newer sewists as viewers who might be following your tutorial, they may not even be aware that they should do that. Maybe this is a small pet peeve that only troubles me, but it seems like it would be beneficial to your followers. Otherwise, I really enjoy your videos, and I’m tempted to make this dress myself!
I love your style! This is a great use of fabric. I'm totally trying it out. The shoes are really cool too! I love that they're recycled plastic. Great video!
Hi Coolipra I just want to say thankyou & your so awesome for bringing us another beautiful dress & zero waste to We (your subcribers) just Love you to bits & are so excited when we see a new video notification from you!
Love this dress! The print is adorable and perfect for spring. I wish I could use my surger machine like you! I cannot for the life of me figure out how to thread it...
My bosses give me a gift certificate to the local quilt shop every year for my birthday (only way I can afford the gorgeous fabric there). I'm so making this dress with some of the fabric I bought this year!
That is such a cute dress design! I dont feel intimidated at all by it i might actually make this one :D I think i will cut the bodice into 2 pieces, gather the front and keep the back more fitted, i noticed yours puffs out a bit in the back and i already know id get annoyed by that! I really really love the sleeves/straps
I love it! Thanks a ton! Now I want to make one, or two or three or more lol I think we are about the same size, except I’m a few inches taller. I don’t know why people were eating that you can’t iron on your cutting mat with the ironing mat, Mine is thick. I was ironing for hours and mine never got warm underneath. I used cotton underneath but it wasn’t needed. Those people must have had cheap thin ironing mats.
I quilt and the only time I notice any heat getting through my wool mat is if I am really sitting the iron on something for a long period of time. I also found if u use steam it will make the mat wet but I have never warped it.

I agree that a big part of learning how to sew and design is the ability to improvise🙂

I really like this dress! I would love to see a zero-waste DIY series, I don't like it when I have fabric left but too little to make something of it.
More coming up! 😁
I’ve seen in previous videos that April used her extra fabric scraps for pillow filling 😊
You can make a matching scrunchy if you have long enough hair, fabric bracelets, make a it into a quilt, bookmarks, coasters etc
If you like historical costuming you can make a bum roll or you can use fabric scraps to stuff toys and pillows
You can always make a towel for the kitchen with the rests or pillowcase for example. I mean with multiple fabric parts that is that you save over some time.
Omg yes I love zero waste DIYs! This looks really good
Thank you :)
Definitely making this! I've been in a dark place, not sewing anything, but this made me wanna get back in the sewing room! Thank you!
Awww I’m so happy to hear that! 😭❤️
I'm so happy that you found some good sewing inspiration❤
I quit coffee, it was hard!
I took naps very often, I was constantly sleepy; finally I got a little energy and feel like sewing again, can’t wait!
hopefully this will help, Im definetely rooting for you❤
Related! 🥹👍🏻

Love the look! It totally doesn't look like it's constructed with just rectangles! I'm totally making this.
I just finished making a dress from this same material for my niece. I have about a yard leftover and plan on using it to create a patchwork skirt for myself.
Love the look of those shoes!

The dress design and styling are giving me Maria from Sound of Music vibes. I really love how it all turned out!
I bought this fabric in October 2021. I love what you did with it.
Great instructions and gorgeous finished product! I love the straps that come from the waist. That adds a lot of style.
The thought process with the notebook was incredibly helpful! I have made tiered dresses before and the math is always a struggle but I think your method will work great. Thank you!!
I love the idea of zero waste.
The shape of the dress is SO pretty ♥️ I loved this
Thank you!
That dress looks good on you. The shoes are also good looking.
I have never sewed anything ever but they way you explained it , it seems so easy . And now i have this desire to make myself the same dress 👗 , will definitely try this out . 🖤🖤
I bought this fabric from Joanns a few months ago and used it to make a cute top!
I love how they reused plastic bottles into shoes... fantastic.. love the second pair ... great video always ❤

As a beginner, this comment helped me. Thanks!
Just started making my own clothes this makes so much sense and it makes me think I can really do it
Love this silhouette. Excited to see zero waste become more accessible
That reveal made you look like a character out of a Studio Ghibli movie!! So pretty & whimsical~ 😍😇
You look ready for a trip to Tuscany in that dress! ❤️
I'm impressed with how little fabric you used to make that dress.
Thank you. I needed straps on my skirt to turn it into a dress, I like the way you put the straps on your dress. I also like the dress you made. 🙂♥️
