- This is the line feed from the ABC Radio Network News in the initial moments of the coverage of the JFK Assasination.
Included is the ABC Log Book notes on what they were airing. Someone in ABC Master Control had to log literally everything that was broadcast each day.
Also, I've included UPI and AP wire copy which you can see the network anchors are relying on for information. The anchor is obviously very upset by the news.
I believe the song in the beginning is Doris Day - Hooray for Hollywood from 1958
Thanks also for putting on-screen a transcript of what was said and the alert tones used to precede some bulletins, along with wire service copy.
The report mentioning Clint Hill saying " he is dead" was on the ABC radio more than a half-hour before Cronkite announced it to the nation.
Can NEVER forget the events of that day!
Lived through it and will never forget.
ABC's Bob Clark was present at both JFK and RFK's assassinations.
Both brothers killed by a lone nut.....I think not
ya think wrong
The Beatles released their second album on this terrible day. And although no one knew it at the time, only 3 months later would they come to this country to cheer up a grieving nation.
Excellent job and commentary, Steve. Is this portion here contiguous, or did ABC flip it back to local programming? I hope you come up with new, previously unheard JFK assassination audio. Thanks!
56 years ago today...
I can't remember the source, but I read where this was the first news about the President being shot, TV or radio.
Did ABC Radio have a net alert which would let stations know that a bulletin was about to be aired, even if they were not on the network at the time? Or was there some other system?
YES. Typically in those days, the network would send a sub-audible tone down the line to affiliates which would active either a tone, bell, flashing light or other signal to inform the operator at the affiliate that a bulletin was forthcoming. On some higher quality recordings you can actually hear that sub-audible tone.
Thanks, Steve!
Back in 1978, I visited a CBS Radio affiliate in Uniontown, PA (WMBS) and the announcer or whoever it was (I forget now) showed me a beacon that was used to alert the station to switch over to the network in the event of big national or world news. You can look up WCBS 11-22-63 for details on this. Hope it's informative.
Didn't ABC Radio actually have some programming at the time that was carried by a handful of affiliates?
58 years ago this November!
The most important clue to the JFK assassination can be found by searching RUclips for "Folksteady."
