  • Audi has just unveiled its latest iteration of the A5 family, and today we're focusing on the sporty S5 Sedan variant. This refresh brings significant changes, not just in design and technology, but even in Audi's naming convention.
Let's start with the basics. The model we've known as the A4 for three decades is now called the A5. Audi has restructured its naming system, with even numbers for electric models and odd numbers for combustion engines. This S5 Sedan sits atop the new A5 range, embodying Audi's commitment to performance and luxury in the upper mid-size segment.
Under the hood, the 2025 S5 Sedan packs a punch with its 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine. This powerplant churns out an impressive 270 kW, or 367 horsepower. But it's not just about raw power. Audi has implemented some clever engineering to enhance both performance and efficiency.
For the first time, the S5 features a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, or VTG. This technology, typically found in diesel engines, allows for more responsive power delivery across the rev range. Coupled with this is Audi's new MHEV plus system, a 48-volt mild hybrid setup that takes electrification to the next level.
The MHEV plus system isn't just a minor upgrade. It enables partially electric driving, contributing to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In fact, Audi claims up to 17 g/km less CO2 and 0.74 liters per 100 km better fuel economy compared to the previous generation. That's a substantial improvement, especially for a performance-oriented model.
Transmission duties are handled by a revised S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Audi has optimized it for higher torque capacity, which not only improves performance but also helps with weight distribution by reducing mass over the front axle. This contributes to better overall agility, a key factor in the S5's dynamic character.
Of course, being an S model, the S5 comes standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system. But it's not just any quattro - the S5 is equipped with a sport differential featuring torque vectoring. This system can actively distribute power between the rear wheels, enhancing cornering ability and overall handling prowess.
Moving to the exterior, the 2025 S5 Sedan showcases Audi's latest design language. The front end is dominated by a wider, flatter Singleframe grille with a three-dimensional honeycomb structure. Slim, precisely drawn headlights flank the grille, giving the S5 a focused and aggressive expression.
One of the most notable changes is at the rear. The S5 Sedan now features a rear hatch design, a first in this vehicle segment for Audi. This not only adds a coupe-like silhouette but also improves practicality with easier access to the luggage compartment.
The S5's profile is characterized by a long wheelbase and large wheels, emphasizing its sporty nature. Muscular blisters over the wheels pay homage to the iconic Audi Urquattro, tying the modern design to Audi's rich heritage.
Lighting technology has taken a leap forward in the new S5. It features digital daytime running lights up front and second-generation digital OLED taillights at the rear. These aren't just for show - with around 60 segments per panel, they enable enhanced car-to-x communication, improving safety on the road.
Step inside, and you're greeted by a thoroughly modernized interior. The centerpiece is what Audi calls the Digital Stage - a curved OLED display that combines the 11.9-inch virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. An optional 10.9-inch passenger display is available, truly embracing the digital age.
The interior design focuses on what Audi terms "Visual Clarity," with a clean, uncluttered layout that's both functional and aesthetically pleasing. High-quality materials abound, living up to Audi's reputation for premium interiors.
On the road, the S5 promises to deliver a refined yet exhilarating driving experience. Audi has fine-tuned the suspension and steering for more precise handling. The progressive steering system has been sharpened, offering better feedback and control. For those seeking the ultimate in ride customization, an adaptive damper system is available as an option.
In terms of pricing and availability, the new S5 Sedan is set to hit European markets in November 2024, with orders opening in July. While specific pricing for the S5 hasn't been announced, we know the base A5 Sedan will start at €45,200 in Germany.
