WTF Happened to RUSSELL CROWE?

- Опубликовано: 28 май 2024
- In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question of where these fine folks went, how they got there, and where you can find 'em now.
This week, we take a look at the career of the great Russell Crowe. Still the guy Hollywood has to go to if they want someone to lead a great historical epic (GLADIATOR, MASTER & COMMANDER, etc), his career lately has taken a turn into more obscure projects, including Showtime's "The Loudest Voice" that have called on him to make some pretty intense physical changes. Is this a new direction for Crowe that he's going to stick with? We take a look in our latest video.

He was excellent in Master and Commander but he will always be our Maximus! Strength and Honor!
Strength and Honor
Love Gladiator, but Master and Commander is the better film (AND CRIMINALLY UNDERRATTED!!!) that film doesn’t get the praise it deserces
He should've won an Oscar for best actor for A Beautiful Mind.
Thank you!! Hello!! He made that movie!! Amazing acting!!
Probably. But those awards are not about being the best at acting or having to do with acting. Those awards, for the winners, are more about campaigning. How much money you can throw at the award and how much ass kissing you can do to get the award. Additionally, the so-called "red carpet" is nothing more than a living billboard. It is an ad(advertisement) runway, where the actors' bodies are the commercial space. This is how it has been during my entire 41(going on 42) years of life in this world.
If you think, or thought, the awards shows are anything other than that, you are an ignorant and naive fool.
@@kellyroberts7268 just like Joaquin was robbed of Best Supporting Actor. I went to Martin Landau for some obscure roll he had
100%
@@randicollier1367 uhhh no it didn't?
He actually really enjoyed that Southpark episode and was disappointed that they didn't ask him to do the voice
We all know Russell Crowe is busy fighting around the world with his trusty boat Tugger
God I love that episode. It’s a great gag
"Foightin Roiund the Woirld!"
Makin' moovies
Makin' songs
Crowe didn’t disappear. He got old and instead of killing himself to stay in shape and play the aged action star like Sly Stallone or Harrison Ford, he instead decided to let time work its natural process and now he plays stockier middle-aged blokes in mid-budget dramas. He’s very much still around.
He also seems a lot mellower and happier in interviews now than he did 20 years ago fwiw.
Sly Stallone will probably live longer than you or I, as will Arnie... but hell Harrison Ford doesn't do ANYTHING and is just a slim old man. same with Bruce Willis. not sure why you wanted to compare Rocky+Rambo with Han Solo+Indiana Jones...
@Josh McIver I was thinking of Kingdom of Crystal Skull, but fine, replace Harrison with Arnie then. That wasn’t really the point of my comment.
@@andrewcutler1380 I know the point of your comment was about Russel Crowe, but I'm going to do a 180 again back to Harrison Ford... when they made Kingdom of the Crystal Skull he fit perfectly into the same costume from The Last Crusade. Probably slimmer, but same costume. Google it.
I was simply pointing out that actors are just human beings. some stay the same... some don't.
Russel Crowe did some body weight transformations... and is now comfortable where he is. that's cool.
are Movies still a thing in 2020?
they certainly look a looot different...
www.theaxclinic.com/articles/2020/7/16/the-state-of-film-in-2020
Harrison Ford hasn't done anything credible since the 2000s, nowadays he only work for a paycheck. (with the only exception of Blade Runner 2049, that was the best work he did in years)
Greatest achievement is still donating the proceeds of his divorce auction to get a koala chlamydia hospital named after John Oliver. Game, set, match.
Nice Guys deserves a sequel. Its one of the best movies I've seen in the last 5 years hands down!
My dad used to work in the Naval Base in Portsmouth England, he used to show people around the HMS Victory historic warship, Russel Crow was one of the tourists he showed round this was just after Russell had starred in Master And Commander , app he was a lovely attentive bloke who was really down to earth , left a big tip and offered to buy my father a beer, totally top bloke app..
Next 3 Days is one of the most underrated movies of the last decade. Really good movie.
I agree, brilliant movie.
Oh I was just thinking the same thing! Never felt a movie had me so much on the edge of my seat! Phenomenal movie!
Yes indeed my fiance n I just watched that the other night for the first time. I love Unhinged tho!
"It's a Ron Howard movie, and sometimes those are good." Thank you for this.
I became a Russell Crowe fan wayyyyy back -- The Proof, The Crossing, and later, The Quick and the Dead, Virtuosity, and LA Confidential (I may be the only person who did't like the movie) but he always drew me in. (Not to mention Thirty Odd Foot of Grunt.) Mystery, Alaska came out, and was good - but then, in the same year, The Insider was released, and Gladiator a year later. A star was born. The Insider is probably my favorite RC movie. The story, the acting, the direction, the soundtrack (Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke) was so gorgeous and heart-wrenching - it brought so much passion to the film, just as Hans Zimmer (and Lisa Gerrard again) brought such beauty and intensity to Gladiator. A Beautiful Mind, of course, was his Oscar winning role. Now, here we are, nearly 20 years later. He's no longer a "leading man," but he's a good actor and keeps quite busy with roles coming out. So, NOTHING happened to Russell Crowe, thank you very much. 😊
Gladiator one of my favorite films. L.A confidential is also really good. Love the Russell Crowe fightin round the world South Park episode lol and unhinged is a nice comeback for him if he stays with big screen
His peak was in my opinion from 1997-2008, around that time. Gladiator & A Beautiful Mind are obviously really great performances, but i loved him in Body of Lies... he played that douche-CIA guy so good.
Master and Commander is one of my absolute favorite movies , its a bit compressed but also a bit too long but the feel of the sea and the life of the explorers is amazing
Like Gladiator, it isn't historically accurate, but it's historically authentic. The events may not have happened, but it does a really good job capturing the experience of the era.
Is it just me, or does the older russell crowe gets, the more he looks like john goodman?
Yes. This. Even his on-screen glares look like Goodman's. He must be a Goodman fan.
YEEEESSSSS! I saw it too! 😅🤣😂
Yes we just watched him in Road Rage ,He was in the truck threateningly ,he was unrecognizable, l thought right away he looked and sounded like John Goodman ,He can’t play the romantic love interest as he looks now ,sorry !,! No mention of R C putting loads of weight on ,
no not close ,both great actors
his lines in gladiator is the cleanest, best pleasure
What we do in life, echoes in eternity....always gives me chills.
I saw gladiator 200 +++++++ I love you Russel Crowe from sunnyvale california USA janet
@@Djshade527 one of the view best picture movies i really enjoyed!
I get it lol; I get it
My favourite movie Nazi is Edward Norton in American History X
Same here.
Same here
Nah Hando would kick the fuck outta that one.
Total mismatch.
Mine is JoJo
trump was in a movie (home alone 2)
He has never really looked young. Like he born in his 30s already.
lmao true
Virtuosiry was kind of ahead of it's time. showing how certain scumbags would live stream their crimes to get views.
Still an awesome movie 👍
One of my favorite movies.
the worst is when people live stream suicide. some worthless soul did this on twitch recently. blew his brains out on stream. hopefully, he didn't traumatize any young kids
@@tnmrvc I agree for both a Russel Crowe and Denzel Washington movie. I know its not a popular opinion, but if it were to get the remake or years after sequel like Blade Runner, I would probably be willing to give it a pass if setup properly with the right people behind it.
@@TheDeadBeatenHorse Virtuosity is good but no where near the level as Blade Runner.
Master and Commander is the only Crowe movie DVD I went out and deliberately bought, it was that good.
The Sum of Us was really good movie for the 1990s. He's actually been in quite a few movies good enough to watch once.
Sum of Us is a good movie...
....and then he makes Boy Erased. He goes a full circle. Definitely an awesome actor! 👍
Robin hood wasn't that bad actually and Nice Guys is a masterpiece
@god o Randomness the late great Alan Rickman made better
He was horribly miscast for Robin Hood
Robin Hood wasn't very good tbh
Agreed!
I loved Robin Hood and don't think he was miscast at all. He was a very calm and sexy hero. He is one helluva horse rider to boot.
After Noah but before The Nice Guys, he also starred in and directed a pretty decent film about the aftermath of the Battle of Gallipoli called The Water Diviner (2014).
He is always my favorite actor.....since my childhood...forever
I’ve worked with and been friends with Mr. Crowe for over 25 years. He’s the finest man I’ve ever met.
His best was , : A Beautiful Mind.:
oh my god its Russell Crowe! Did you meet Tugger?
It's disturbing that you think that.
One movie you forgot to list "Proof of Life" in 2000 with Meg Ryan. I believe this is when they met and started dating. Oh yeah, future WTF happened to Meg Ryan? Also State of Play in 2009 with Ben Affleck.
Plastic surgery happened to Meg Ryan.
Saltine (Under The Mat Radio) Yeah, that was a pretty big thing to omit from this video considering all the behind the scenes drama.
@@baronvg That was a surprise to me Proof of Life was not there. There was a death on the set and also the affair that affected Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan's marriage soon after the movie was done. Yeah, that should of had some kind of bookmark in the 2000s. That is when Russel Crowe's stock went up after Gladiator.
Damn she was super hot in city of angels. I hate when women go under the knife
I didn't know people had a problem with the title "Cinderella Man". It's historically accurate. Damon Runyon gave the real James Braddock that name in an article back then
One of his best movies so goooood
It's a case of historical accuracy not working in terms of cinema.
It wasn’ t a problem. This guy and writer of this script is an idiot . I won’t be watching anymore. I watched this for Russell not for the guy who does this program. Russell is rightfully considered one of the most talented actors of Hollywood historically and today.
I love him. He is an amazing actor.
Yeah he is!
Two things. The chubby Russell Crowe looks like John Goodman and the skinny Crowe looks like Tim Robbins. Maybe there is no Russell Crowe?
With a beard he's Russell Crowe without one he's just another actor.
@@Thespeedrap John Goodman has lost 100 lbs., so now looks more like Russell Crowe than Russel Crowe.
I think he is the Haley Joel Osment of movie heroes.
Who was almost Harry Potter, until JKR put her foot down!
Can you imagine?
"this austrailan actor..." *wants to type angry comment* "...was born in new zealand" *ok well played joblo*
Crowe's Australian
Crowe IS Australian. Ask the man himself, even he will tell you he identifies himself as such!! He calls himself Australian in most, if not all, his interviews and Lives in Australia.
@@TMan-77 He was born in New Zealand though. His cousins even played Cricket for the New Zealand national cricket team Martin Crowe and Jeff Crowe. His wife is also new Zealander.
@@TMan-77 He doesn't have Australian citizenship he is quite literally a kiwi. Sorry.
F@rkin Oath MATE! Look up Russ Le Roq on the Auckland Punk Music Album AK79!!!! PHOTO INCLUDED! Martin and Jeff CROWE are CRICKETERS, and RUSSELL is their cuzzy Bro!
These are, without a doubt, my favourite videos on RUclips. What a joy!
Man I think he still around. He won a golden globe this year for a brilliant performance in a tv series and only 4 years ago he did that hilarious the nice guys, i wait for a sequel. And also he had that new movie coming out. He didn’t disappeared. He only got a bit old and a bit fat like many actors. But he still a great actor. But anyway....great video
I am still waiting for WTF HAPPENED TO MICKEY ROURKE or STEVEN SEAGAL
Steven Seagal happened to Steven Seagal.
I'm still waiting for the Rourke one too.
Russell likes his Fosters. Great Actor tho too bad he lets his fans down.
@@kylesantos8190 Yellow King Film Boy did a retrospective on Mickey Rourke a while ago. It isn't as funny as a WTF video but still is a nice watch.
@@mafeuk that lil doc was awesome but it was waaaay to dramatic. Great work tho 💯
I couldn't believe how good Nice Guys was. It was a pleasant surprise
Nice guys is probably my favourite Russell Crowe movie..
The Corn groping thing predates Gladiator. It's actually Kevin Costner in Dances With Wolves.
The medicine man in Dances with Wolves.
Master and commander is a great film and my favorite of his!
Yeah! For some reason I always thought it wasn't that good, so I always avoided it. Then decided to watch it only the other day on Netflix, and I was blown away! haha
Dude “The Next 3 Days” was amazing!
Love Russell. He is very talented and he seems to have outgrown the angry stage. Strength and Honor!!

And they skipped proof of life
Dont forget Noah just because I did!
He directed this movie as well it was 2014
@@highonfire885 thats a good film
I've discovered so many good movies I'd never have watched otherwise with this channel. Props
Robin Hood (2010) is a lot like Kingdom of Heaven. The Theatrical Version is okay but the Director's Cut is wonderful and worth more than one watch. Recommended!
I'm in physical pain from the Aragorn pronunciation
I scoured the comments because I felt the same
It's like "Paragon", but the 'A' in front is negation, so it's "anti-paragon".
Me too, my friend. Such a pet-peeve
@@modolief That's batwahmen
Thought he was great in two movies
Gladiator
3:10 to Yuma
If you haven't seen 3:10 to Yuma i strongly suggest you do
Russell is my favourite Hollywood actor!!!
The next three days is another great movie of his not many people talk about. He’s amazing in it.
Romper Stomper is bloody amazing ... and yes its a very hard movie to watch!
Great flick.
Still find “3:10 to Yuma” , a great story and well played by all. I also love “Mystery Alaska”
Mr. Blo, I am, like, a hundred years old but, you sir, keep me laughing like a baby. You're repartee with the movie-thing is amazing. Please don't go away!
Romper stomper is an absolute classic and critics don't seem to understand the difference between fiction and reality.
Also you didn't mention another of his Aussie movie roles in The Sum of Us.
Great video. Thanks .
"Man of steel is always an exception" that's right
You want rage.. ?
Russell is your man..
He is my Gladiator ..
My first Russell film
Was... Breaking up..*
I love him ever since..
Thank you..
Great video :) Rus has grown to be a cool guy who does a lot for the film industry here in Australia.
Unhinged was SO good. I have auto accident related ptsd and it triggered like half of my anxiety responses. I FELT the movie and that's cool af.
Fav Movie Nazi is Ralph Fiennes from Schindler's List.
Edit: I'll put Christoph Waltz as a second from Inglorious Basterds
I've never been so grateful that an actor turned down a role than to find he turned down Aragon.
Been waiting for something like this for a while now, since the release of his film UNHINGED.
I love that the same sound bits are in all your videos haha. Yet... For some reason It Works!
Great video yet again :)
I met Russel in a hotel in Nottingham must have been around 2009 when they were filming the Ridley Scott Robin Hood he was honestly a nice bloke he was just sitting at the hotel bar with another guy possibly his agent but I chatted with him for a few minutes while I was waiting to be served I offered to by him a beer which he declined but when he left he had a beer sent over to my table which was cool
Love these videos
You guys should do a video on why 1999 was the best year for movies
“Russell Crowe Fightin' Around The World” 😂
I Love Russell Crowe he’s one of my Favorite Actors very a Underrated very convincing, Witty, Charismatic, & Likeable
I Love Russell Crowe ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Gladiator is one of my favorite movies ❤️❤️😍
1:29 I'm gonna pretend that you said "Eragon" on purpose instead of ARAGORN...
Lol I was thinking the same thing
Ah dude you're funny! I really enjoyed this video! I like it, and I like Russel Crow! I don't think I've seen him in one movie where I didn't enjoy his performance! Oh and I'm a tad disappointed you left out The Next Three Days! I loved him in that! Such a gripping movie!
I was explaining this to my GF last night oddly enough. Basically, Crowe retired before chancing a wash out of bad movies and Hollywood responded by inventing Gerard Butler.
🤔.............👍 👏 😂
“... by inventing Gerard Butler.” 🤣🤣🤣🙅🏻♂️
Robin Hood is one of those movies that got little respect but was actually a pretty good movie. Russell Crowe is such a good actor and has done a lot of good movies.
My top Crowe movies:
Gladiator
3:10 to Yuma
Cinderella Man
American Gangster
Robin Hood
Man of Steele
Quick and the Dead
I may add..L.A. Confidential...a beautiful mind to that list..
I thought he got a divorce and had to sell off a bunch of his stuff. And John Oliver bought his jock strap from gladiator.
We need him to go fight covid 19 like he fought cancer
What? He fought cancer?
What?! 😲
I love Russell Crowe and his films.
Where was the mention of his outstanding music career with his band 30 odd foot of grunt? Lol, even I can't say that without laughing my arse off.
A Good Year is a remarkable film from 2005 with Russell Crowe in the south of France with an adaptation of the Peter Mayle book , A Good Year, unbelievable cast , fantastic location...and great music from his band the Ordinary Fear of God..check it out
You missed the Efficiency Expert. He worked with Sir Anthony Hopkins. Movie was brilliant.
Actually this Robin Hood was one of the best ones I've seen in a long time . He was a fabulous Robin Hood.

Did you know, Russel Crowe was Nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award For Worst Supporting Actor For The Mummy, but he lost to Mel Gibson in Daddy's Home 2
I had to pause the video to go watch “Fightin round the world” Hahahaha now I’m going to finish this.
haha me too almost! xD Altho I managed to watch this first! Gonna go watch it now!
He's still a damn great actor. Nice Guys was excellent. And despite how awful a movie it was, he was the sole thing keeping me watching Unhinged. He generally does this in mediocre movies like Broken City. You buy him as a sleazeball NY'er. I'll also echo sentiments about The Next Three Days. Super overlooked great film. I also enjoyed State of Play.
You hit the nail right on the head.
I love that you recognize 99 was the best year for movies, my 2 favs came out- Boondock Saints and Fight Club
Ummm, he's still A-List. I think the movie that made him was Virtuousity.
can be a-list if hollywood don't paid a list..
YES Virtuosity!
James Sharp loved Virtuousity but for me it was LA confidential. Russel Crowe is still A list. He just doesn’t give a fig about Hollywood or being a celebrity.
Better to be in a movie a year about something he finds interesting than be like Nic Cage who's diluted his star power by having to say yes to every role he's offered (to pay off his debts)
Gladiator, that was a work of art, and Russell Crow is a gifted actor.
the second you said 1999 was the best year for movies ever....... I SUBSCRIBED immediately!!
What’s the name of the song at the end of the video plz help
I was like "Where is Stargate ?!" then i remembered that i always confuse him with Kurt Russell
Crowe invited Trey Parker of South Park to a listening party of his album and he said it sounded like Bon Jovi meets hepatitis B
My Favorite Russell Crowe Films Gladiator, Master & Commander, Body Of Lies, Robin Hood 2010, 3:10 to Yuma Remake, Virtuosity, American Gangster, Mystery Alaska, Proof Of Life, Heaven’s Burning, Cinderella Man, Noah, Next 3 Days, No Way Back, Broken City, & Mummy 2017
Wasn't it like, "30 odd foot of grunt" or something like that? His band.
"denzel won the unholy golden idol" you get a few points back for that.
His 'Next three days' was another movie i really enjoyed after legendary 'Gladiator'.
Most recent update I saw from Russell Crowe was a tweet of kookaburras outside his window at his home in Northern New South Wales. I think he’s gone to the birds!!
A great movie! we need more of this sort of movies, even more these days.
Typical 21st-Century Hollywood..
Hollywood: “would you like us to advance your career?“
Russell Crowe: “of course!“
Hollywood: “You must star in a movie called ‘Cinderella Man’” 🏳️🌈
You skipped over 2011, "The Next Three Days." That was a good one.
You missed out The Water Diviner, good film. Love the channel though!
another great WTF. the only 2 i haven't watched are his 1st movie and the series about Fox News
Gladiator is one of the greatest films ever created.
You forgot to mention his 2015 movie The Water diviner how come you didn't mention this movie hey?
Whats about "Boy Erased"? he make a wonderful job.
'Boy Erased' is a good movie...
....20+ years earlier he plays a gay son in the 'Sum of Us'. He goes the full circle. Definitely an awesome actor! 👍
