My mind is BLOWN. Nuts. Just nuts. Also the underside of the embroidery is gorgeous to me !! Will she ever wear it or will this be a work of art in the corner of your sewing room forever?? I'd be afraid she'd fall in a puddle ! LoL. Also I'm on board with whatever Sarah Classic Sewing association that gets started. I'm a momma of 4 and budget and time and the needs of a family keep me from getting away !! Let's make our own rules and get some RUclips contest going ! Lol
hahaa thanks! you're too sweet! and yes, we've got a trip to the biltmore planned in the spring, so she'll wear it there for some fun photos 🥳 and then it'll get packed away lol
Amazing work. You did a wonderful job. I also had problems with Saga years ago. They were not a friendly bunch of ladies. Don’t let them discourage you. Your little coat is lovely.
Oh Lordy Sarah!!!! Are you serious about SAGA!!!! No wonder I've heard so many bad stories. Don't feel bad about bad 'mouthing' these groups. It is time that people stood up and did some 'naming and shaming' Maybe that is childish of me but I have seriously had enough of groups that believe they are better than anyone else! I'm fairly confident in saying they weren't born with their skills! And, I'm on my high horse now lol, I truly believe a lot of it is ladies my generation *(I'm 57) and older, don't like to be shown up by younger, more enthusiastic and confident people. They are sour pusses. Your work is absolutely INCREDIBLE and deserves all the accolades if you ask me!!! You keep doing what makes you happy and challenges your skills bub, that is how we grow. Grrrr, sorry, I do rave on, but it is people like that who ruined re-borning for me, and a lot of the forums I was in, before FaceBook 🤣😉 I think you are too polite sometimes, but, believe me, if you stay polite and well mannered, you'll probably end up cynical and pi#*ed off like me hahaa Happy New Year, It's sewing, You do You Boo 😜🤗🤭😘
I love your talent and dedication to your creations! Large organizations become bureaucratic. Too bad SAGA can’t see the effects of their unwelcoming behavior.
Hypocrisy. SAGA are a bunch of snobs, they have this elite air that you have to be soooo perfect in your submissions as well. I remember being met with all kinds of flack taking nursing babies to other conferences myself - not toddlers, but breastfed dependant infants, and we're supposed to respect women's choices...
mhmm there's so much talent within the members, it's a shame all the meetings are spend "yaying and naying" it's not supposed to be some political town meeting 🤷♀️ sewing together should be the focus, but that's all good, just bringing it up since I'm hoping to inspire folks to go forward without limitations ♥️
Sarah, look up learning styles/modalities. You'll be surprised where you fit. Also, look up Erik Erickson's psychosocial developmental stages. It seems learning, growing, and maturing is lifelong according to him. Take a peek at Jean Piaget, too. Origins of Intellect.
Right there with you, girl, on the frustration with folk's mindsets...rules vs expectations, but then clueless. I think I would go bonkers with out a variety of creative outlets to offset the daily grind. Happy New Year 🎉❤ btw I'm so looking forward to receiving my floche order and seeing how it differs from the coton perle I've been using.
I was watching through this video for the SECOND time the other day when it got me thinking about how long it has been since i did smocking and hand embroidery. It got me wondering because I was just loving the whole process with you Both times. (No offense but it is a really long one 😊 Which is no problem in my book) Thinking it through and all. I've been really urging to get back to it for spring for the grands. Why so strongly?🤔 It's been two and a half years !!! The fabric I got for the dresses last Christmas was too thick for the pleater so I had to do a simple version. Before that was my son's layette for his newborn. I guess all that to say thank you for fill the nitch until I get going for this spring. I'm sure you make everyone feel like "we could be the best of sewing buddies"❣️ .. and I'd love to be at a party with you (needle in hand).
I agree with you about SAGA. Convention is SOOO expensive. I think the cost sort of leads to an elitist attitude. I pay my dues so that I can enjoy my local guild with its wonderful members. You keep doing what you do. Haters gonna hate. 😆
About handsewing an entire garment... Do it! It is so rewarding! And about what seams you should do I can recommend Bernadette Banners cannel here on RUclips. She is a historical costume maker and she has wonderful instruction videos on hand sewing (and also has written a book on the subject).
Did you go to school to learn all this? A trade school? I am so interested in doing something like this. I have sewn and done different types of art all my life.
nah just always into things. I've never been afraid to jump into the deep in, so to speak, although it's rarely pretty at first, and that's never bothered me. I'd say go for it... RUclips is a wonderful tool on how to learn a ton of skills these days ♥️
I feel like maybe 20 years ago I would have learned heirloom sewing from SAGA or classic sewing, or similar sources. And while these aren’t bad places to learn, everything you said is absolutely true. It seems they haven’t done much to keep up with the times- while people like you have really done quite a bit to keep heirloom sewing in today’s spotlight. Any time someone on one of the facebook heirloom or smocking groups asks a question on where to learn for a beginner or how to do a certain technique, half the comments are suggesting your RUclips channel or your starter kit. I don’t see any suggestions to join SAGA. I was very fortunate to find your channel back when I first started sewing for my nieces and grand baby. I don’t mean to be negative but- I could care less whether these organizations figure out how to stay on top in this industry because they are acting like they can make the rules for a whole community regardless of what it wants or needs.
Martha Pullen, PhD, pioneered Heirloom Sewing by machine and her books are still available on eBay. She and her wonderful friends have all retired now, but their books and DVDs can still be had.
you're really sweet, thank you, t hank you! and yes, I feel the same way, not trying to be negative, but instead inspire folks to go forward without limitations ♥️
@@onemercilessming1342 yes, all of her video content including vhs and dvd courses and her tv show are available on RUclips also. I’ve watched them, but I think Sarah goes into far more detail and troubleshooting.
@amandaglidewell8451 I agree. Martha made some assumptions like we already had sewing experience or we knew what heirloom sewing was to begin with. Those gorgeous hand stitched baby garments that she created (or the antiques she ferreted out of estate sales) were the stuff my Victorian paternal grandmother and my Edwardian maternal grandmother made. In my day, I learned crocheting at their knees, but I was an oddity--the outlier, if you will. I took up heirloom sewing when I was in my 30s having children of my own. It was a lonely road. English smocking and French hand sewing weren't really popular in the CA desert.
I cant belive they kicked you out! I would have been balling my eyes out! Did they at the very least refund you?? I vant wait to see what you get upto this year!
I agree. Sarah was a paying customer and SAGA pulled her aside like the principal's office? Humiliation. What a contradiction too. She's there learning children's heirlooms techniques, with a precious baby in tow. How can they attract young members if they don't accommodate young people's lives? The opposite of welcoming. I've been sewing heirloom since the first little class I took from Gail Doane in 1989 here in SLC. I've always felt SAGA was a bit too haughty for me. Seems my hunch was spot on.
well I wasn't kicked out, but yeah, just pulled out of class to be lectured.. definitely principle's office vibes. but I only bring it up now since it's another example of how folks set rules over their life that interfere with their goals. and thanks! im excited for this year, too. happy new year to you! ♥️
Oh my, what a beautiful work of art! Monet would be proud to have your work alongside his!
Wow what a talent. So beautiful. You must be so satisfied and proud of this project.
Speaking of artists....maam you fall beautifully into that category with this and all of your masterpieces
Break the rules when you won't hurt anyone, not even you. Especially not you.
una maravilla!!! Felicitaciones...
Hi Sarah
You should start the Sarah's Sewing Society, but no dinosaurs allowed.
The jacket is magnificent 💕
hahaaa there's an idea! maybe it's been developing here on the youtubes? 🧐
Gorgeous! Incredible! Justa wonderful design and execution wow
I keep wanting to run ahead to see it finished…. But love watching the process….

That is seriously the most beautiful garment I've ever seen. You are such an inspiration to a beginner like me. Thank you.
Thank you so much!

I’d like to know the name of the pattern and where it Be purchased?
it's from a French company called c'est dimanche, but apparently they aren't selling anymore. I bought this about four years ago.

awesome, thanks for the reference!
Which gear and which mic you use please make a video on that your voice is so clean❤❤
oh gosh, thank you! sound is so confusing to me, but i use the rode mics and hope I'm doing it right lol
