I love the sweet little baby sounds in the background. Good momma! I have a whole parcel of sweet babies too and many times I am sewing between feedings. :)
Another lovely garment (and I adored the little boy suit as well). When I learned to sew, we didn't use pins to mark darts. We used a method called "tailor tacking". A needle was threaded with a long piece of contrasting thread and VERY loosely sewn through the dots on the pattern pieces that indicated the apex of the dart and the two matching base points, making sure that there were loops above and below the garment piece and the tissue pattern. The loops in the basting threads, top and bottom, were cut, leaving a large "cat's whisker" above and below the piece. The pattern piece was gently pulled off (so it could be used over and over for other garments) and the fabric layers gently pulled apart to cut the "cat's whisker" so that both sides of the fabric were marked for the dart. After aligning the base marks ending at the apex, the dart was pressed, sewn, and the "cat's whiskers" removed with a tweezers. I still use this method to this day, as I don't trust fabric markers to be completely removed and it's easier to see than snips in the fabric or pin holes for these aging eyes. We never cut the sewing thread ends close to the fabric, either. We left them a little long, threaded them onto a needle and weaved them between the machine stitching lines and the fabric fold, or inside the seam line, ending with a knot that disappeared. Of course, they are extra steps, but...I'll adhere to your advice: when sewing, you do you.
Ahh yes I have heard of that, but it seems more time-consuming, but like you say, I'll probably have to use that once my eyes start aging ;-) And yes! I love hiding thread tails like that. So much cleaner.
Hi! New subscriber here. Loving your channel and the information you give. There is not much for heirloom sewing. You’ve mentioned cutout work. And today I’ve got my wing needle and it says in the back good for decorative cutout work, but I can’t find any information on how to do it. Maybe you could talk about it? Thank you. Happy holidays ❣️
welcome! this cutwork I did by hand, and I haven't heard of doing cutwork with a wing needle, but I would guess you would do your zigzag wing needle (like using a hemstitch) around your shape (stabilizer underneath) and then very carefully cut away your fabric. I can experiment with it and see how it goes, you kinda have me intrigued now ;-) happy holidays to you too!
You are amazingly talented. How long does it take you to complete her dress. You could do a video on the cutwork Embroidery if you ever find the time with two babies
You're too kind, thanks so much. Yes, it's on my list of videos to do.. like you said, two babies... actually need to get going to nap time now. But anywho, this was about 20 h ours to complete the cutwork (did it while nap-nursing our youngest) and then the machien work as a couple of hours and an hour of finishing hand sewing.
I am moving onto this dress- will see if I can tackle it and make a similar look. Anyway- I have 2 questions for this below; 1) How can I sew the belt? I want it to have those beautiful tucks and bumps (gathers) in it. I watched the entire video but I didn’t find it... have i missed it or indeed you haven’t included it? I do tend to miss things, so forgive me if it’s the case. 2) This is gonna be my first time making fabric tucks at the bottom half of a bodice. The size of the bodice pattern I am using needs to be cut bigger to account for my 6 fabric tucks BUT do I need to cut the whole bodice bigger by 3 inches or only the bottom half of the bodice I.e. where the tucks will go. You can tell, I am new to these tucks 😅. I hope you are able to help me with this like you always willingly do 😊😊
Oh the belt is just a rectangle, i remember doing it extra wide and gathering the ends. If youre putting in tucks, it's easy to cut an oversized rectangle, mark the spacing, and do your tucks. Then cut your pattern piece out
She is so cute. And mom makes the prettiest dresses for her. Thank you for your sewing videos.

ha! yes, I was nursing our little Henry while doing the voice over. Only so many opportunities in the day ;-) Thank you
