- In this third installment of the Denfield Hoard, I take a look at finds that I will call 'Multimedia'. But in this case it does not mean CD-ROM's and cheap plastic external speakers like it did in the 90's. This looks at software, magazines... but I get completely distracted by a separate cache of Mac stuff. In doing so, I get to delve deeper into a certain 90's Powerbook...

One thing I really admire is how these videos are still made in 4:3 aspect ratio with old equipment being used to make them. It really feels like older videos from even before early RUclips, and fits with the vintage collector theme many of these videos have.

What I like most from 6:45 is the “would I know about it?” - the anticipatory music of the reveal - the zoom-in on the model name… then the calm reaction of the ‘acquisition number’ slapped on it. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a few seconds of video like that are ten thousand
That Marathon 2 theme is still phenomenal.

Great to hear from someone who played the game. I’m glad it brought back memories.
MacAddict was freakin' great when it started. Funny, honest, entertaining. Full of hidden jokes and easter eggs on their discs each month. Weird projects (they made a web controlled motorized webcam out of random crap), plus before I had an internet connection it was the only way I could get game demos. I remember in the "write to us" section one guy wrote in saying his magazines kept coming under the name "Ch4is" and he'd like in changed. They published the request in the magazine with a cartoon of him as some kind of freakish monster with a "My name is Ch4is" name tag.
They became a lot more generic as the years went on. By the time they turned into MacLife it was so generic it could have been an AI spitting out that crap.
Much agree, and you know I remember the Ch4is thing. It kept snowballing for a few issues as readers piled-on saying he’s just trying to be a hipster putting a number in his name. I don’t ‘lol’ at much in real life but that got me going.
Super agreed. I didn’t have a ton of money then, but subscribed as it felt like the soul of the Mac at the time. I’ve recently rediscovered the Amiga, and there was a discussion in that community recently about the culture difference between all the platforms, and how “corporate” the Mac was. MacAddict is my counter to that.
Come to think of it, Power Computing’s marketing campaigns feel like MacAddict articles.
I remember I was reading an issue of macaddict in middle school one day and I was so engrossed in it that i didn't realize that the entire class was staring at me for some reason. They must have said let's all see how long it'll take before he notices but I couldn't hear or see them, as I was in the mac addict zone. I even had an @macaddict email address for a while. That was when it was fun to be an Apple fan, and think different actually meant something. Now it's the exact opposite, if you want to think different you don't use apple products!

Its great to back thank you for introducing me to retro computing 65scribe! I have a revision for getting a Power Macintosh 7100 case and installing a motherboard from a modern computer highly likely from a gaming machine and probably more expensive upgrades.

it's so weird how ephemeral these artefacts are. i was just watching a video about Minoan pottery, statues, frescoes, that have lasted over 4000 years. you could theoretically still use those pots. but we have a hard time using these machines from 20 years ago. it takes time and specialized knowledge and spare parts. in order to be profitable the companies that make these things almost instantly discard everything about them. as though they were making any other fad based consumer product like a mcdonalds happy meal toy , except these machines required tens of billions of dollars of infrastructure and supply chain involving hundreds of thousands of people. but the other strange thing is how nostalgic it makes me feel to watch them, almost as though a Minoan religious artefact could summon some kind of out of body experience for a Minoan viewer, when i watch these i can remember things from childhood, my Mother who is passed away, like reaching back in time.
Pottery was also a fad.. It just so happens fads lasted thousands of years back then...
Things that are more complicated tend to be a bit higher maintenance. A pot basically just has to hold things. Computers are a bit more complex.

I am very glad to see love for the StyleWriter 1. My gramma paid for a Mac Classic II and that StyleWriter so I had a computer for uni. Both lasted me the whole four years and some extra time afterward.
I ran mine with the StyleWriter II's printer drivers (CDEVs, eh?) because they sped up printing -- half the time! You had to grab another CDEV that disabled the nozzle reset button in software, because hitting that would brick the v1. This also allowed some level of backgrounding, so I could finish the last couple pages of a ten-page paper while printing the first eight, then run from my dorm to class.
Gee, I think I still have similar habits. Oh dear.

Man I feel you on that 6500. I really fell in love with the 6400 case design since I first saw it advertised but couldn’t begin to afford it back then. Now my collection is such that I can’t justify buying it.
Seems we both stay separated from that Mac for one reason or another. When I see it available it’s always a 6 hour drive away. Then when I find one locally, someone from far away swoops in and gets it.
I've been lucky enough to acquire one in the last year or so from a collector in my city who was downsizing and making some questionable choices as to what machines to part with. I had to jump at it. I'm yet to really set it up and try it yet though, too much going on lately :(
I'm particularly keen to try the subwoofer, which is apparently full range until external speakers are connected and then it only does bass while your external speakers handle mids and treble.
That’s great that you got one! Is it the 6400 or 6500? Definitely one that I’ve wanted to explore as it was one of the first designs to come out of Apple when it started it’s turn-around.
@@65scribe it’s a 6500/250. Has zip too. I also got an 8600/200 at the same time with a g3/300 accelerator in it.
When my Dad got our Centris 610 in the 90's, he was looking at the Style writer, however the salesperson talked him out of it, and to get an HP Deskjet instead. He showed that the ink in the Stylewriter did not dry properly, giving a copy that would smear if you put enough pressure on it.
Interesting. We printed a lot of paper on that printer and I don’t remember that problem. Of course, you couldn’t get it wet but that didn’t come up very often.
2:23 I suspect the free pop scamstress from the oil museum is enjoying her new mint condition PowerMac 6500 as we speak.

I work with Macs, and somehow even though they're irritable and moody, I can still appreciate a good piece of equipment.

It belongs in a museum. hehe. I never got the Stylewriter, first time seeing it. We had our old Imagewriter II. Still have it in the garage. Then we switched to the Laser printers.

Another outstanding video. I had many of the 80s Mac User and Mac World issues in addition to a short lived one called Macazine. Mac magazines were works of art back then compared to other system's magazines.
Great observation about the Mac magazines. PC World, it was hard to find the articles for all the ads. I never came across Macazine, though.
My father and I entered some competitions in Australian Macworld back in the 1990s. We won two or three of those competitions, earning ourselves copies of Kai's Power Goo and a piece of music loop software called The Groove Thing.
Competitions were creativity based. One of them was to take a word relating to the Mac and turn it into an acronym (or a Mac-ronym). Another one was called Desktops Of The Rich And Famous and you were tasked with making a screenshot that could be from a famous person's Mac. I'm sure we won a third competition as well but I can't remember what that was or what we won.
What desktop did you make? I still remember the Stevie Wonder submission of a blank image. Those contests in The Joy of Mac section at the back were a lot of fun.

lol that person from MacAddicts magazine reminds me of every Mac user I knew from the 90s. They all hated PCs, but when you asked them why the only answer they could come up with is "Windows sux!"
That said, there were legitimate reasons to dislike PCs and say that Windows sux in the 90s, but most of the Mac users who said that stuff didn't have enough experience with a PC to know why they hated it. They were just told that they hated it and that was enough for them.
I was an unfortunate soul who learned Excel on a Macintosh in 1988, only to go to college in 1992 to take a required course on using Lotus 1-2-3 in MS-DOS. Then entering the working world in 1993 with Windows 3.0 with DOS shell. It made ME bitter! I think the threat of losing the Mac in 1996 made the users fight pretty hard to keep it.
Crazy to learn there was Inkjet so early on. I always assumed it wasn't in the mainstream market until the late 90s. It's wild to hear your family got an Inkjet printer in the early/mid 1990s and meanwhile I was born in 2001 and our family didn't fully move away from dot matrix until 2007! (Though we did get a b/w inkjet in 2005 or so.)
I'm equally amazed you still had a dot matrix in 2007! That's a great personal memory, though. Thanks for taking the time to share that.
@@65scribe Yeah of course! I was very small so I didn't know what the paper was for. I would constantly make messes by tearing the reams off of whatever paper I could find laying around my dad's office room. The dot matrix's mechanical buzzing is a bit of a nostalgic tone for me, even though we had the toner inkjet as well. We were past dial up internet and even had a TiVo, so it wasn't a cost issue. (Not that I was allowed to use the Internet in 2006.)

I admit I find this amusing, since I'm one of the two people who were able to get most of the machines from this hoard, if it's the one that was in the church there.
Amazing! I never thought this video would reach anyone that visited the hoard. It was really fascinating to see.
@@65scribe yeah I visited it the day before the original owner had to leave the church for its new owners to take over. I could only fill my car with stuff. I referred a friend of mine to the location and he was able to get a truckload from them, after that I'm unsure what happened. It definitely didn't belong to someone who passed away though, unless that person is the person who bought the church property from the guy I interacted with.
@@missditto OK, so you dealt with the owner of the hoard. I dealt with the new owner and it was further along in the process. I was told the original owner took a large amount of stuff with him. The new owner said one guy came in and spent $1600. Another paid for shipping to BC. I was there the last day before the rest went to e-waste and there was still stuff that, in retrospect, collectors would have loved to get. This video got off topic and talked more about a collection in Sarnia where the owner died. Nothing to do with Denfield. Thanks for fleshing-out the story a little more. I thought the original guy owned a computer store with all the dealer-only stuff I found there, but the new owner said no. I hope you got some amazing vintage computer stuff.. unless you were there for the VCRs and satellite equipment.
@@65scribe hah no, I was there for the mac stuff. we mostly took just the mac computers and lacie diamondtron/trinitron monitors. we could not take it all and plenty of assorted bits and pieces were left, but we got most of the higher-end mac machines and interesting bits. I have an inventory large enough to fill a 53' trailer, my friend literally stores his inventory in one.
Another damn good video. Marathon was amazing. Used to play across the network on quiet Friday afternoons at work. And against my daughter at home so much that I developed an RSI in my wrist.

I recently got an original StyleWriter too, in it's original box. It's in nice cosmetic shape but doesn't run. When I power it on, the error light code indicates it's carriage is stuck - it doesn't move or show any sign of life. There was corrosion from the ink powder that'd leaked over the years on the motor, other parts beneath it. I also pulled it's logic board and it's caps had badly leaked as well. I tried recapping/cleaning it in case that'd be the problem, but it didn't help.
Bummed I didn't get it working - I'm hesitant to attempt to disassemble the whole carriage section as there's so many gears/springs/etc I'm sure it'll likely break it more. I am happy at least the corrosion won't spread any further and it'll be a nice display piece (once I can find a place to set it up)

Man I completely forgot about dot matrix printers being a thing. I remember using them in elementary school back in the 90s on the Acorn computers we had at my school in Toronto, I distinctly recall the insane amounts of noise and the low quality prints they made.
Ha! I remember the serious computer geeks in high school handing in their essays on tractor feed paper from a cheap 9 pin dot matrix. It looked terrible compared to a proper typewriter.

At least in Germany they still do.
@@Leofwine Not here in Canada anymore as far as I'm aware. Most prescriptions are either handwritten or a printout from a computer. Dot matrix printers are still used, but mostly in industry/b2b applications. A lot of invoices are still on dot matrix since it works with carbon copies.

In South America in the 90s, Mac Addicts were hard to find; only selected magazine stands would have it, because of the high importing taxes applied; and they arrived with 3-4 months of delay (the xmas issue I received on march next year but still was eager to buy it!).
That's very interesting, Juan! Seems to me they were hard to find in Canada, too (so I subscribed). Not as hard as South America, mind you.

Yes, I did. I hope viewers were listening with high quality speakers or headphones and not their smartphone speaker. Fortunately a lot of the 90’s game music is not auto-copyright-enforced and people can just enjoy it.

Last time I saw a Mac that could run System 7 was almost twenty years ago. People in my country throw everything away as soon as they can. Can't even find a VCR these days, let a lone a classic Mac.

-- BTW at 7:40 with the HDI-30 SCSI adapter, the switch enables or disables the 15th pin on the adapter. The OFF position allows you to use an external SCSI device attached to a PowerBook. The ON position allows you to dock the PowerBook as an external device to another Mac, similar to the Target Disk Mode on later Macs. You may already know this ON/OFF DOCK feature...

@@65scribe I like to share my knowledge the best I can, and I hope that you try out your HDI-30 adapter with the switch. Remember to shut down your computer before switching, as SCSI doesn't like hot swapping - I learnt the hard way with the hot swapping of SCSI cables. I don't like to call myself an 'expert' in any way, because that means I know everything! There is a lot I don't know!

God, I miss magazines having personality to them, especially when they'd go off the rails with projects, the letter pages, and the reviews. They're so sterile now.
Websites have gotten even worse, it's basically impossible to discover an online news outlet for something like cars, computers, whatever. Everything on google looks like an online magazine but always turns out to be a listicle written by a clueless person, or increasingly, machine generated spam meant to trick search ranking.
Well said! I agree with you completely on this. If I’m trying to find information for a video, I end up reading mid 90’s internet articles.
