I had this one in 1994. It was a beast back then. I used it all the way up to 2002. It sure was worth the money.
I had the Performa 6110CD from Sears. Right around this time, on the American TV show "Home Improvement", Tim Taylor debuted the "Binford 6100" series of tools that had "more power". I can't help but think they were in some how related.
I never thought I would ever miss the sound of bearings and clicks, even in brand new Mac labs you could always hear some bearings and they would echo off of each other in heterodynes and what not. Back then the teacher would give us the signal and we were allowed to then press the power key on our 5200s. So 40 x 500W all starting at once (brilliant), the chorus of chimes and the inevitable car crash sound to some poor sucker.

@@65scribe when I showed all your videos to a friend of mine she was l laughing at the future Mac Pro segments, especially the recent one where two of them argue. She especially liked the double humour of it also literally being a paperweight, despite a glass cube totally being something they might do if they were able.
(Edit: though I must admit her favourite recurring joke is “damn!” just because of the delivery. But she also really likes the chill oil-museum woman, albeit she’s not a joke, just a recurring character.)
I'm glad to hear your friend also enjoyed the Mac Pro 2037, @Kaitlyn L (...and the other recurring characters and sound effects). As long as I keep the segments short, I figure I can throw Mac Pro 2037 in for my own entertainment, and not bother the more serious viewers too much. This allows some 'deep cuts' like putting down the 'rampant' Mac Pro 2037 with the fusion pistol from Marathon 2 and saying dialogue from 'Old Yeller'.

I remember setting up a 6100 with a DOS card running windows 3.1. All installed from Floppy disks.
Jeremy! Good to hear from a fellow Retro Mac Cast regular. I had the AV model, so no room for another card, but always thought a DOS card would be cool to mess around with.
I still have a Quadra 800 with a DOS card cribbed from a 630. Works awesome with 3.1, even have Windows 95 on it on a different partition.

Thank you, so very much for this re-posting this video. When Apple started to sell these 6100 models was the first time that, I decided to check out buying one of their desktop computers. With a 601 Power PC processor, a floppy drive, CD-ROM drive, AV card, a full size color monitor, and an optional PC card for windows 3.1, it truly looked like the best of all worlds. However, at the time my bank account was to low to make this purchase.
A few years later, when my money was right, I picked-up an All-in-One 5400. While, there was no longer any support for a PC card running windows mine did have the Apple video card system (with video editing software), the Apple TV/FM radio card system with matching black remote control (which can also, be used to turn the computer both on and off), and later, I added a G3 processor upgrade card. As a replacement for my 5400 my current collection includes an All-in-One 5500, in the same form factor. After installing my Apple video card, Apple TV/FM card, and G3 upgrade card it was as if, my old system had come back to life (smile...smile).

I enjoyed watching this again, and getting a second jolt of nostalgia for my old 6100/66, which was my first Mac. Had a lot of fun with it, but eventually sold it when it could no longer keep up with the newer, more colorful Macs that could run OS X.

That chime at 7:39 was always my favorite of all of them, and to this day the one at 7:49 is the one I absolutely hate. We had a Power Macintosh 5200/75 back to back with a 5500/225 in one of my elementary school classrooms and I specifically remember avoiding the 5200, not because it was the lesser machine but because I hated that startup chime so much. It also had weird feeling keyboard keys that were really glossy for some reason... Good times.

I love how these old (ancient?) machines still work and can still be used. I have a 1998 Rev A iMac (via eBay), and I'm using an old Photoshop and Illustrator license I own (when you didn't have to subscribe for a software license), to create some cool stuff.
One of my favorite internet lore story is "The Graphing Calculator Story." It goes into the creation of the Grapher application and a very entertaining read.

The 6100 was the first Macintosh I’ve ever owned. When I bought it I noted it was a quite limited machine, but after I installed an AV card it became quite usable. Later I would put a G3 accelerator from Sonnet and run Mac OS 9.1 and iTunes on it.
It was the first computer that I used to download photos from my first digital camera - through the CD reader, ‘cause the camera was a Sony Mavica CD.
Thank you so much for fixing this so those of us who could not watch it before (myself included) are now able to. Informative and humorous as always. Your video format is my comfort food. It’s old-school, but is still so well done. Thank you.

I was one of those that had an issue playing the original; about 75% of the time, it wouldn't load at all, the other 25% it stopped about 2/3s of the way in.

Nice update video. I bought a lot of these PowerMac 6100s when they were plentiful. The plastics were shocking on these models and had to keep replacing the bezels and feet. I had so many of them that I stripped them down and dumped quite a few, so I have a large number of DOS compatible cards and cables laying about. There are 2 different extender cables available - one for the PM 6100 and another for the PM 7200 and 4400/7220. When I find all parts, I will make a video of all DOS compatible Macs.
Thanks (once again) for commenting with your vast experience from the 'greater' days of Macintosh. A DOS compatible Mac video would be great with what you've collected!
13:12 lol, sad but true, no pc user would imagine his flopppies would eject automatically once they drag the icon to the trash; I can still hear their curses when they hit the off switch in the middle of a windows document editing while trying to eject disks

Great video. I had a Quadra 610, so the 6100 felt somehow obtainable in a way that the 8100s were not. You'd see 6100s occasionally in the wild. They were the cheapest, most widely-sold, slowest Power Macs, but in a way they were also the most important - they proved that even dysfunctional, hair-on-fire '90s Apple could do a processor transition (no thanks to Spindler) and ship, more or less on time.
I think Apple was far enough ahead in the development of PowerPC that Spindler could not negatively impact the introduction when he took over. Things fell apart quickly after that.
Agreed. The story of the brief and disastrous Spindler reign is rarely told but absolutely hair-raising. Would make a great 65scribe video in if itself come to think of it!

As usual, very entertaining and informative. My "One more thing": The PPC 6100 could accept a Sonnet G3 accelerator in the expansion slot; the AV card would then plug into the accelerator so it didn't totally waste the single slot. This gave the computer a boost to either 240 MHz (4x60) or 284 MHz (4x66). I have one and it breathes new life into a very old computer. Also, the PPC' CPUs all ran hot and really should get a fan (spliced into the CDROM power cable) for cooling. Pictures available upon request…
Thanks for uploading the video again :) I can watch it this time. Special place in my heart as well as my first Mac was a Centris 610. Its great to see the little snippets of it. Also the 16 Mb ram upgrade that cost $700 at the time as well ... How times have changed.

The 6100 is the Mac I used the most until I bought my first personal Mac (Intel MBP). I was working for a printing company and our MIS System went to Power PC. I bought a bunch of used 6100's in 1997 to replace all of our users 68k's. I had that 6100 until 2001.
When I bought my G4 tower in 2000, they were astonished that I was still using a 6100 up until then. Without a G3 upgrade card, it would be tough using a 6100 in 2001.

that upgrade card startup chime is the same one used for the Power Mac LC series, the 5200/5300 all in one series and the 6200/6300/6400 series.

I had a DOS compatible version but I think the card was faulty because it would cause the entire computer to lock up randomly whenever I was in DOS mode.
But the thing I remember most is using eWorld. I was still a kid when we had the service. We had just "upgraded" to a Performa 6200 when I really started using the service. I was there for the last night in one of the chat rooms. I remember we kept getting alerts every few minutes up until they finally disconnected everyone. The last message that was displayed was something like "Sorry, eWorld no longer available" and I just remember closing the program and trying to reconnect to it a few times just in the hopes that it was still up. I did get a connection but it failed to authenticate, probably because it was using a local POP number that was shared with other services. Regardless, eWorld was magical and I had so much fun using it. I'll never forget it.
Very cool reminiscences of eWorld. Thanks for sharing what the last minutes of the service was like. That tight knit community on the internet that eWorld offered is something that’s missing these days.
At 30:19, you show the drill dimple for the apple logo. The other dimple is for the emblem. Be extra careful with that one but it can be done.
I used a vacuum hose for car just long enuf over the drill bit where just the end is showing, like 1-2 mm’s. Or turn the bit by hand. Once you drill enuf thru the plastic, drip some IPA in the hole and it should soften some of the adhesive. Use the other side of the drill bit, which should have a flat end, and gently push thru. When it starts to release, get your thumbnail or plastic spludger under it.
It is possible. Just take your time and be gentle.

I miss Optical Drivers with caddies. I wish someone in the modern era would make a Bluray Burner that allowed you to pop discs into caddies. I can appreciate "back in the day" when people used CDs/DVDs all day why they quickly fell out of favor, but now when you generally only use an Optical Burner because you need to (speaking of storing data), having a hard shell would make them one of the safest ways of backing up data.

I was given a Power Mac 6100 in about 2001 from a company that was getting rid of it's obselete hardware. A friend of a friend had to smuggle it out. While I loved the form factor, it didn't feel like a huge upgrade over my beloved LC475 and was full of comprimises. That monitor adaptor was massive pain in the ass and the video was sluggish. But it did open up the world of PPC software, particularly 3D software that I could never run before due to the LC lacking an FPU.
What really transformed the machine was a 240MHz G3 upgrade that I was able to get shortly after. It was like a whole new machine but it pushed the design beyond it's limit. With the G3 in the PDS slot, the HPV 'video card' in the L adoptor, and a full bank of RAM, the case ran so hot that I had to prop it up on two pieces of wood to try to cool it. I used that setup for a long time to make art and learn programming. And lots and lots of Marathon, StarCraft, and Ambrosia shareware.
A great machine, but only when upgraded with that G3.
Great personal story, Jodie. Thanks for posting that. Good that you got it. Companies tended to landfill them back then rather than let someone get a second life out of them. And you certainly did!

It was obselete in 2001 but I didn't have any money back then so any free stuff or hand-me-downs got a lot of use.
Once of the first things I did was play Warcraft II because it actually ran with the internal CD. I had an external CD drive for my 475 but for some reason the copy protection in the game didn't work with it. So had a the game for a few years before I could actually play it!
Coming from DOS DOOM in 1993 I never get to like Marathon (I started using Macs at work in early 95) it was sooo 2D and so "cartonish" compared to Doom and I guess this was the hallmark of pc gaming (literally thousand titles) vs mac gaming (very few titles and only a handful of AAA ones by the major companies; one notable and honorable mention was Warcraft)
The Doom vs Marathon division of opinion is very curious. I'd love to look deep into it in a video. A prominent RUclipsr likes to say that Halo was primarily influenced by Doom and Half-Life, while being oblivious to Marathon. I guess we can blame it on the fact that the games were on different platforms, but, ultimately, it boils down to bad research on his part.

Oh, this was my first computer! I liked it, made a bunch of graphic designs and books with it. I regret that i got rid of it about 10 year ago, cause it was broken and was just sitting around... Shoud have had it serviced.
What a blast down memory lane. I had a 6100/66 with a sonnet 233mhz upgrade card. man did it fly. It also died from overheating. Oh well
The Stylewriter II printer at 4:36, ahhh... memories. I don't know about other users but I remember mine pretty fondly, it was a pretty reliable printer for the time. Of course, after getting a LaserWriter for free from a company that was getting rid of all its Apple stuff in the mid-90's, I kinda lost track of the Stylewriter.
Yes, it was pretty solid. I used to buy the refill kits to save money. These days I use a printer so rarely I can’t justify owning one.
I loved my Stylewriter II as well, though I remember the ink would not last long. My solution when I needed multiple copies of something was to print out an original copy via the Stylewriter II and then take it to work and make all the additional copies that I needed via the office Xerox copy machine. Though, NONE of the copies were as sharp and dark as the original. The Stylewriter II had fantastic print quality in its time.

Yes, unfortunately it’s printed on a rubbery material that tears apart if you try to lift the hard plastic covering. I know what you mean though. I sometimes see them crooked.

My first Mac was a Performa 6115CD with a 15” display. 8MB RAM and a 500 MB hard drive. Cost $2,500. I added 8 MB more RAM for around $700!

I visited China a few weeks ago and while at a bus stop in Beijing, a young woman was speaking with the same melodic flutter as your oil museum friend, except she was speaking Mandarin to her male companion. She even said "listen!" when he wanted to interject during her anecdote. It was uncanny. Have you met another person like your oil museum friend? To quote F. Scott Fitzgerald, "It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down as if each speech is an arrangement of notes that will never be played again." Also I just purchased a 9500 without CPU or RAM and missing a few bezels a few days ago.

The ‘oil museum girl’ did go on to work in China, learning Mandarin, so that’s maybe not a coincidence. Keep in mind, this was 26 years ago, and no one in that video is young anymore. :( I had done a lot of in-public video up until then, but I had never had met someone so comfortable in front of a random video camera.

We never see you on camera so I can only assume you and everyone in the videos still look exactly the same, without missing bezels and still pliable plastics. I thought the 9500 would be bigger and heavier, and looked at the model number label to make sure it wasn't an 8100!

There's a good reason why it doesn't matter which slot the cache and ROM cards are in. So on old Macs, the ROM actually sits beside the RAM in address space, and is accessed the same way.
In early Macs, much of the operating system was actually on the ROM, which is why the classic OS was so small, and the computer would just access the ROM instead of the RAM if it needed something there. I believe the system enablers often carried patches for software in the ROM when it was needed for the OS to function on older Macs.
There was software that would let you dump a Mac's ROM to disk, and you could poke around it in ResEdit like it was any other file.
...Wait, I think I might have commented something like this in my post on the original video.

Apple was a little less aggressively anti-freedom back in the 90s... But it is odd, none the less. I suspect it may have been a sort of unintentional functionality. It might just be a consequence of the circuit design that it doesn't matter which slot is used?

I wonder why Apple never used the 40mhz 68040 in a Mac again after the Quadra 840AV? You would've thought that chip would be the natural pick for the few 68k Mac models Apple released after the 1st-gen. PowerPC Macs came out.
I think that processor would have made the PowerPC's look bad at a time when there were very few native PowerPC apps.

This isn’t directly related to the video, but I found a listing where someone is selling a Macintosh Plus, Macintosh SE FDHD (SCSI drive dead), Macintosh IIci (doesn’t work properly), Macintosh Portable (capacitors blown) and a Macintosh LC for 300€. They come with a 12” Monochrome CRT, Apple LaserWriter 16/609 PS, 4 keyboards, 2 mice and a replacement SCSI drive for the SE. Only the Portable and IIci don’t work properly. I wish to hear your opinion about the listing, and whether or not it’s worth it (I’m not an experienced collector by any means, and replacing the capacitors would be my first time).
It's hard with prices all over the place. Generally stick to the principle to pay the value it has to you. This is a great starter set for a collector who wants to dig into the machines and fix them. Watch for leaking batteries in the IIci, SE and LC. Certainly a Macintosh Portable is the most cool and hard-to-find of the bunch, even when it doesn't work (like mine). Price is in the range of 'fair' to 'slightly high'. When you see them, you'll have a better idea. I hope this helps!
