I agree; representation is important in media, and not just in the people we want to be or who we like. Women deserve to see themselves in just as many awful, yet strangely cathartic and/or tragic characters as men do. Representation, even in less admirable roles and characters, works not just as a way to be more accurate and present the world in a more complete way, but also as a way for a marginalized group, in this instance women, to explore every side of themselves and what they may become in the future in a safe way. We all relate to the villain sometimes, so it's only fair that we all get to see ourselves in them in a more direct way too. Good vid!
Great video! I really appreciate the conciseness of it, though I would not have minded a longer portion going over your thoughts of different kinds of protagonists and why you enjoy them. I hadn't really thought about stark difference between the amount of "bad" male protagonists and "bad" female protagonists, but I do know that bad or evil female characters - and even morally gray female characters - are often given worse rep than bad or morally gray male characters in most media. That makes for less of them overall, and as you said in the video that really is a shame. I don't read as often as I used to, so finding good reviews of characters, tropes, cliches, and the like regarding books is always great.
Agreed! I would honestly love a 30-40 minute version of this video going deeper into the aspects, as well as possibly answer the question why I could for the life of me not put down My Year of Rest and Relaxation, even if I didn't find the plot or any of the characters likeable
I find that bad female characters are not only vilified more, but woobified more as well - sort of playing both into the tropes of ‘heartless seductress’ and ‘harmless damsel’, there’s no winning on either side
ayy, that's what I try to do with my characters. I would love to see more "Rick Sanchez" type of "cool loser" kind of women, so I've written some sci-fi comic concept art with a character who's an absent mother who basically dipped after giving birth, because she never wanted children. these kinds of things happen. women aren't naturally, instinctually kind, nurturing or "motherly" and she left because she knew she would hurt and traumatize that child if she tried to raise it. she can't stand loud noise, responsibility, waking early, or anything else that parenthood requires. she doesn't feel bad. but she's smeared by the father and portrayed as evil for this, so she starts over in the countryside, fixing machinery for money, with the only friend who stayed by her side. she's jaded and annoyed at the world, her side of the house is in disarray with unfinished work, and she's plotting revenge as a pet project, but she's happy. :) half the megacity thinks she's the worst, but she stays low and nothing comes to a head. for now
Mostly is well... women are NOT allowed to be "bad". Like, we have the three archetypes women MUST be: 1: Wants baby. 2: Wants to pleasure men. 3: Ice queen. (Evil or "cured" by a man.) Add to this that women are NEVER allowed to be "hormonal" and/or "selfish". And with this, we are left with VERY strict gender roles of "Women CANNOT do X!" and ONLY men can do Y!". Or my personal favorite: Women don't have less rights than men. Some men just happen to have more rights!" This applies to ALL media. Be it mainstream, indie... prawn. There's just certain types of bad females CANNOT do. Since it's deemed "wrong" in all regards. And... I always found that very derp tbh. Like: They CAN be bad. But not THAT type of bad. It's like... arbitrarily locked talents in a game or something. "Sorry, ONLY male protagonists can unlock the [Intimidate] tree, as that is NOT a feminine trait!".
@@thefisherking2268 Kattlarv's entire premise. It uses a completely crafted idea that somehow, despite the massive amount of progress that has been made, women are still put in boxes and forced into tight gender roles when it's just a fact that it isn't true. I mean, for his specific argument, look at literally any movie made by disney in like the past 5 years. Just about any one of them will show this is bullshit. Also motherfucking Ellen Ripley from Alien (A movie from 1979) doesn't fall into one of the single-note categories Kattlarv said were the only things women could do in cinema because of gender roles. Also wasn't fucking Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty just straight up evil? That was 1959. Nobody is going to claim the 50s weren't at least a little sexist and racist.
From the title and thumbnail, I thought this was going to be about DATING bad women, lol. But, I watched anyway! Impressive video for such a small channel!
I dunno. I liked Daisy Jones and the Six. Yes, Daisy is awful. Most of the awful things she does are because she's a drug addict, and her drug use becomes a big plot point in the story. But it's also a story about how society gives beautiful people (and rock stars in particular) a pass for being awful. Daisy doesn't get what she wants in the end, and that's a good thing. She kind of disappears into obscurity and the others get happier lives. The fact that they still talk about her 30 years later with a mixture of starry-eyed tones and hateful lust is just an indication of the way they've all turned her into an archetype in their heads. Good video, btw.
Have you read “tell me I’m worthless” by Alison rumfit? (I mention it only because I adore that book for its unlikable women narrators both of whom I adore. I did also have to stop several times to take a break and go read something lighter though, that book pulls no punches.
Eliza Clarks Boy Parts is real real good. Also her book Penance. Both books with shitty women (though Penance is about shitty girls) . Brainwyrms by Alison Rumfitt also
Hey! This is the first video I saw of you and I am impressed. So for that, I'll subscribe :) Is it ok for me to suggest a few things? And please know that I mean this with the best intentions, I just want to see your videos and yourself at your best. I would really enjoy it more and I'm sure others will too. Please try to add subtitles in your videos and speak more clearly or closer to the mic. Or invest in a better mic. I hope this doesn't come off as rude or anything, I am so sorry if it did. I just want to hear from you and in the best way
Thanks for the sub! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. So the audio quality is something I’m working on. I don’t have a background in sound engineering so there’s a lot of room for improvement. How are the auto generated subtitles?
@@OwlCriticism Hey, so what you can do is get a mic that is wired onto your computer. Sometimes old is gold. I had seen a youtube lay a blanket over herself and her mic and the sound became much clearer. Some record record the audio in their clothes cabinet and this also produces good sound. You can also use stock footage in your videos to make them more visually appealing. Canva is good with that. Also subtitles help people like me concentrate better. The auto generated ones are not good. Good luck, Owly!

Would recommend "Gone Girl" as well then. It has two main protagonists, the couple, but the woman is definitely awful.

does anyone know what the book/movie is @ 1:01?
The middle one? It’s From Hell, a graphic novel by Alan Moore.
Try and write that and not be called a misogynist. It's just easier, and it usually doesn't change the character much. It's hard to blame people.
