Everytime I read a book on our ancestors I am so fascinated by how our educational systems especially in America have did a disservice to its people by not teaching it to its people...knowing full well why they did but, what a disservice to have a more deeper knowledge of the world and those around us!
My son and I are researching one black history figure a night. The catch is digging deep to find a person that neither of us may know and to present what we have learned about the person at the dinner table.
AMEN! Because they have done so much over such a great amount of time. But many times we are cut off from said work because we have been cut off from our history.
If we don't first look back, we can't clearly see the way forward. If we don't plant our feet on a solid foundation, we can't push off to climb higher. This was fierce on several levels! Looking forward to the breadcrumb trail!
Karen, Berea College thanks you for the shout out! Also, I listen every Saturday to your In Class with Carr. As an alumnus and employee of Berea College, I would like to encourage you all to go to our web page and check out the Carter G. Woodson Center.
Baba Carter Godwin Woodson was a remarkable African scholar, anthropologist, journalist and an author that uplifted Africans as a whole by honouring our history. Baba Carter Godwin Woodson wrote his two excellent books that’s the Miseducation of the Negro and the Education of the Negro. Our brother encouraged us to never forget our past as well as connecting with it endlessly.
As always a beautiful segment and I had to share it within my social media network. Thank U Karen Hunter for continuing the tradition of sharing and being a griot. #nappyvandals
I like how you said you’re going to discuss black American individuals/figures who stories are still unknown! As a Mechanical engineer I can say the same thing about the number of black inventors/innovators both past & present!! A lot of people don’t even know that the lead global engineer of design at GM in Detroit was “Edward Welburn” (👨🏿💻) since 2005 he recently retired in 2016, Crystal windham ( 👩🏿💻) is Cadillacs interior design director 🙌🏿🙌🏿 since 2016 !! she’s currently designing the interior for the new SUV that will rival Tesla’s SUV
Hello sister Karen I just wanted to let you know. The Philippines 🇵🇭 is near and dear to my heart. You see even before it was a US territory. The Negritos are the original inhabitants of the Philippines. That’s right they are the indigenous people. White folks try to hide this information. But you can check for yourself. These black indigenous people were all over Southeast Asia.
A lot of people don’t realize that!! Africans traveled to the Southeast Asia ocean before slavery to economically trade with various Asian communities!!! Africans also went to the Southeast Asia oceans via European slave trade to!!! People don’t realize that
So important! I work in an office with “equity” in our name. However, an email blast with all things February didn’t mention Black History Month.🤦🏽♀️ Here we go...
As Rep. Lewis advised, when you see something, say something. Say something where it can make a positive difference. Some years ago I had a similar experience; a Science of Mind magazine article had an all things February lineup that didn’t include Black History Month. I was stunned and wrote the author.
That is their business you work in an office with “equity” in (their) name, make sure you handle your business. Educate and enlighten yourself than share that knowledge with your children and their friends and anyone who has the desire to learn. Listen to the oral history of the elders you encounter in your daily life they have stories to tell that can give context to what you read about the past. Acknowledgment in an e-mail may seem important but in the end it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on. Just my humble opinion...Be Well.
My family's ancestry intersects with Carter G Woodson's ancestry through the Gannaway surname in Virginia. The Gannaway's migrated into Tennessee around 1800. Through extensive research, the name King Daniel Ganaway (one n) emerged. A hidden figure in Black/American history, he became famous as a photographer in the early 1920's -1940. Teaching HIMSELF photography on the only day he had off as a butler in Chicago, he won the 1921 John Wanamaker 15th Annual Exhibition of Photographs, besting over 900 submissions, including Karl Strass. He went on to appear in major publications, including the National Geographic Magazine, Fort Dearborn Today, the Chicago Bee, and eventually managed the Chicago Bee's photography department under Anthony Overton. The following link is of a documentary that partially details the discovery of one of our ancestor's once-hidden contributions to our journey! ruclips.net/video/O_Yclbg1xjs/видео.html
