I started repairing my own boards a couple of months ago and reshaped one I found in the trash. I’ve looked up a sh$t ton of videos on shaping and repair on RUclips. Your video is by far the best visual explanation of repairing a board. All I literally had to do was watch this video just to refresh myself as I haven’t done it in about a month and somewhat forgot the little details. Thanks man 🤙
Awesome! I appreciate the feedback and am glad it’s helpful. Before learning how to glass boards, I bought a $30 garage sale board and practiced fixing up the dings. Best way to get your feet wet!
@@BendheimBoardsI agree! Your videos are among the most informative and helpful! You have helped me work some magic I felt was beyond my skill level 😅
Watching this while I wait for my two week old dream board that suffered a near death experience following a leash snap - always wear a thick leash in the big stuff! Can’t wait to pick it up from the repair tomorrow! Thanks!
Here in Brazil . everything is very expensive, we spend very little material. but it's all your show job . and in your country you have many resources. big hug
A couple tips. 1) Never make the edge of your patch go straight across the board (perpendicular to stringer). You create a transition that could leave the board prone to breaking in that spot. 2) If you wait for the microballon slurry to start to kick off, it'll be about the consistency of cheese, and you can come back and shape it with a razor blade. Saves a ton of sanding when reshaping on nose and tail. You can use the leftovers in your cup to tell when the slurry has kicked the right amount.
I am a drummer. Teach me that speed you mastered sanding by hand. I couldn’t get over the sound effect and fast motion, it made the video stand out.😂😂😂😂 Good stuff!
Very hypnotic time lapse video. One thing I can't seem to figure out. If you put on two layers of glass won't it cure significantly higher than the rest of the board so that when you sand the new repair to.make the repair for to.thr rest of the board you are effectively sanding off all the new glass?
It’s hard to tell in the video but you sand down the repair area below the level of the board so you can build it back up to the level of the board with the new patches.
My senior year of high school I decided to fix a surfboard that my dad's friend gave me years ago because they were getting a new one that was less dinged. I've always wanted to surf so I fixed it up, didn't do nearly as good of a job but it works (I think). God damn I didn't do nearly as good of a job, next time I need to fix it ill take notes. Still haven't gotten to go because literally every time my friend want to go conditions are shit and the drive is a little 2hrs most days (less with traffic). Hers hoping I can use it soon when were all allowed back to school.
Love your skill and thanks for putting great videos online to help others like me. I would have have touched the stringer lines up into the repaired nose section so the repair wasn't so obvious and the lines ran full board length, given the effort you went to to re-paint (but then I'm a bit OCD lol).
I started fixing my own board's, then I started fixing my friends board's, and now everybody wants me to fix their board's. I think im gonna start to charge them XD
I don’t know anything about boards or surfing but I do know a highly skilled Tradesmen when I see one. *Question - as a furniture maker I periodically apply old fashioned catalyzed lacquer wet sanded between coats. I noticed you wet sand with your fingers we always use blocks. Have you always wet sanded with hand pressure?
Thanks man! Yes I wet sand with my hands or a foam pad to follow the curves of the board. If it were completely flat, then using a block would make sense.
Nice video, your mate is stoked. I picked up on a few small things but the most important criticism I could give to anyone is your nose laminations went straight across the board from rail to rail. This a BIG no no in glassing. Essentially it has a created (assuming you used 6oz cloth) a 12oz ( plus your little patches beneath) crease or snapping point. Your repair is far stinger than the original lamination so if that board ever buckles, it's there it'll do it. Look at tail patches on boards, you'll notice they all are cut in a V, diamond or almost a U shape for this very reason. Nice video
@@BendheimBoards Nice, the beauty of youtube is theres always some know it all to point out your mistakes haha. As some positive feedback for you, many people over the years have mentioned your videos to me in my small ding repair shed in New Zealand so you should be very proud of that!
@@smallkinedings Rad, love to hear it. I never considered myself an expert, just showing my process that I continue to improve on. I always welcome constructive criticism!
Great job! I can't really understand how you protect your paint job? Only with a layer of spay varnish? Is it enough hard? Anyway, I'm a woodworker, shouldn't be wise the invest in a orbital sander with aspirations plug-in? On video, seems like the standing operations with the machine could be improved? Don't known anything about resin and Shaping, it's just a thought. Keep up the good job! I love your vids!!!
Fuck yeah!! This video is outstanding. Honestly, doing ding repairs properly has been one of the harder things in my surf career. I never had anyone who could show me how to do it properly and there weren't a lot of great videos out there. This one is really good. PS: I am quite lazy about sanding. I feel like I should invest in grinder eventually.
Print your logo on rice paper and then put it under the fiberglass cloth before you laminate. Add a little resin under the logo as well. Once it hits the resin, the rice paper becomes translucent and you only see the logo. You can also add it after lamination but still before th hot coat by just using clear resin and putting a patch of fiberglass cloth over it. Go to minute 2:28 in this video if you want to see how I add a logo: ruclips.net/video/zXCQfX4VMj0/видео.html Hope that helps 🤙
@Surfers of siargao no worries bro! Another little tip is if there's a hole on a flat part of the board, fill the hole with resin and then stick cellophane tape over (on top) of the resin and long enough so that it overlaps the hole. It will squeeze excess resin (wipe the excess away) and more importantly, it will make sure that the resin level is level to the board, which also means less sanding work and a nice level and smooth surface.
thank you for the video and explanations couple of questions: 1. why are the fiberglass patches so much larger than the ding area cut off? can they be a bit smaller? any benefit either way? 2. can I laminate/glass with sanding resin if you don't have laminating resin? or can I laminate/glass with epoxy resin (which I have, before it goes bad) and then finish with polyester sanding resin? Thanks!

I remember 20-30 years ago, golf ball dimple size dents in the bottom was experimented with, similar to a Golf Ball. Has that trend faded/advanced and was there any positive achievements from it? Is it still used or experimented with? I know in Water Skiing, a slight ripple on the water loosens/lightens/reduces the drag on the Water Ski where as Glass Conditions increase drag.
