Surfboard Ding Repairs & Spray Paint Design

- Repairing surfboard dings and a damaged nose. I sanded with 80 grit sandpaper and then applied two-layer patches of 4oz fiberglass cloth with laminating resin and then sealed it with sanding resin. I sanded the repairs progressively up to 600 grit sandpaper. I also used Solarez for one of the smaller repairs. I then made the new paint design with a blue Liquitex acrylic spray paint and white Posca paint pens. Lastly I used clear acrylic spray paint to seal the paint.

I started repairing my own boards a couple of months ago and reshaped one I found in the trash. I’ve looked up a sh$t ton of videos on shaping and repair on RUclips. Your video is by far the best visual explanation of repairing a board. All I literally had to do was watch this video just to refresh myself as I haven’t done it in about a month and somewhat forgot the little details. Thanks man 🤙
Awesome! I appreciate the feedback and am glad it’s helpful. Before learning how to glass boards, I bought a $30 garage sale board and practiced fixing up the dings. Best way to get your feet wet!
@@BendheimBoardsI agree! Your videos are among the most informative and helpful! You have helped me work some magic I felt was beyond my skill level 😅
The sanding timelapse was so satisfying
🤙
This job brings me a lot of memories. I just to do the same 40 years ago. Nice Job. Congratulations
Right on man 🤙
Gotta love the sound of sanding in fast motion
If only I could sand that fast in real time
surf, shapping and jerry garcia man...rock on
How awesome: didn't know how much work could go into a repair. Nice job!
Watching this while I wait for my two week old dream board that suffered a near death experience following a leash snap - always wear a thick leash in the big stuff!
Can’t wait to pick it up from the repair tomorrow!
Thanks!
The repairing process is so well documented ! Amazing Job !
Appreciate it 🤙
A couple tips.
1) Never make the edge of your patch go straight across the board (perpendicular to stringer). You create a transition that could leave the board prone to breaking in that spot.
2) If you wait for the microballon slurry to start to kick off, it'll be about the consistency of cheese, and you can come back and shape it with a razor blade. Saves a ton of sanding when reshaping on nose and tail. You can use the leftovers in your cup to tell when the slurry has kicked the right amount.
Great tips man! I’m still always learning so I’ll keep those in mind next time. Thanks for watching!
@@BendheimBoards there's also something called a random orbit sander. Buy one.
Hey man, regarding tip 1) how would you do it? Always rounded patches? Thanks!
@@Ishiventuri Yeah or football shaped depending on what your ding looks like.
Little advice for those who don’t have a squeegee or similar, use a old bank card or one of those plastic cards they are working out perfectly🤙🏼
Beautiful job!! Crazy how you did most of it by hand too! That's seriously hard work instead of just using a sander polisher for everything
I know nothing about surf board or building/ repairing them. I know you are a true artist amazing all your work I love watching an artist work
Incredible. If I only would have had this type of information 45 years ago!
🤙
The sound of sanding sped up is soo SATISFYING
Viciada nos seus vídeos! Trabalho incrível!
I like to use as little resin and cloth as possible to keep the board light and responsive. Excellent work.
🤙
I started fixing my own board's, then I started fixing my friends board's, and now everybody wants me to fix their board's. I think im gonna start to charge them XD
Yeah man, make a little money to help fund the next board!
That would be great
Wow didn't realize there were so many steps that went into it. Nice work! Hope to learn this some day
Super ding repair. Those dings will never be dung again
Very interesting! Thank you for taking us through the process
You bet 🤙
love this. Thanks for the guidance.
The high speed sanding cracks me up. Solid video,
Mahalo
Very helpful! Thanks for posting. Love the artwork too.
Great video. Nice work. That board has a second lease on life!
You're magic my friend, i love your jobs
wow you really went the extra mile for that guy, and that nose is never going to break again
The new paint job looks sick
I am a drummer. Teach me that speed you mastered sanding by hand. I couldn’t get over the sound effect and fast motion, it made the video stand out.😂😂😂😂 Good stuff!
😂 thanks !
This is a great video. I was always wondering how those magic repairs get done. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks man, you bet!
Best DIY surfboard repair on RUclips.
All I do is fill the whole up with resin then sand it down😂😂😂
hahahah same
Hey whatever gets the job done!
@Surfers of siargao works 100%. Just got to be careful with how deep you sand down to. Use thick double sided tape to create moulds/stop overflow.
@Surfers of siargao works perfect
@Surfers of siargao no worries bro! Another little tip is if there's a hole on a flat part of the board, fill the hole with resin and then stick cellophane tape over (on top) of the resin and long enough so that it overlaps the hole. It will squeeze excess resin (wipe the excess away) and more importantly, it will make sure that the resin level is level to the board, which also means less sanding work and a nice level and smooth surface.
Thanks dude! I‘ve watched a few other ones about repairing a board but yours if by far the best!!
Your good you make it look easy!
Nice work ! As a teenager I had one for years I rode with Ducttape on the nose
I think we've all done a duck tape repair at some point 🤙

best vid i have seen for board repair! thanks for mentioning the sandpaper grits and also the paint details:)
My senior year of high school I decided to fix a surfboard that my dad's friend gave me years ago because they were getting a new one that was less dinged. I've always wanted to surf so I fixed it up, didn't do nearly as good of a job but it works (I think). God damn I didn't do nearly as good of a job, next time I need to fix it ill take notes. Still haven't gotten to go because literally every time my friend want to go conditions are shit and the drive is a little 2hrs most days (less with traffic). Hers hoping I can use it soon when were all allowed back to school.
Doesn’t have to be perfect as long as it gets the board water tight. Good luck man hope you get out there soon!
awesome video, thanks for that!
I don't surf at all but I do appreciate good craftsmanship! Cheers sir!
Parabéns meu amigo!!! Está arrebentando!!!
Obrigado amigão! 🤙
Love your videos man, they are nice and concise while still being very helpful. Keep up the great work!
Will do man, thanks for the feedback! 🤙
Perfect man! Congrats!!!
That was fun. Amazing work
Yeah agreed. Clear & thorough tutorial
This should be on daily dose of Internet
How?????
👌
Dude yes
Yes
No. Not at all. This is original, well made and elaborated content. Daily dose is just another compilation channel that feeds from original content creators or trending videos. I'd rather let the algorithm suggest cool stuff to watch rather than give money to lazy compilators instead of original content creators.
Love your skill and thanks for putting great videos online to help others like me. I would have have touched the stringer lines up into the repaired nose section so the repair wasn't so obvious and the lines ran full board length, given the effort you went to to re-paint (but then I'm a bit OCD lol).
Thanks man 🤙
Here in Brazil . everything is very expensive, we spend very little material. but it's all your show job . and in your country you have many resources. big hug
Sim somos abencoados aqui de ter tantos recursos
@@BendheimBoards you really live in a country, governed fairly for everyone. I'm happy that you have a blessed nation.

Mindblowing work! Its incredible to see how fast this man can sand down that meterial, its like looking at a high grade sander

Meticulous, this is awesome.
Hello Just To Say You Did A Very Nice Repair Also A Nice Paint Job From Chris.
Wow... Sehr gut gemacht. Schöne Grüße aus Deutschland ✋🏻🇩🇪
Satisfying
I like your sanding tehiqe must say quite fast one :O
Very satisfied 🙂
Very nice neat work
What a nice and fine cut repair
Good job my friend
Thanks 👍
Nice job. Try a DA sander and a sanding block it will make life easier.
Thanks for the tip 🤙
Very hypnotic time lapse video. One thing I can't seem to figure out. If you put on two layers of glass won't it cure significantly higher than the rest of the board so that when you sand the new repair to.make the repair for to.thr rest of the board you are effectively sanding off all the new glass?
It’s hard to tell in the video but you sand down the repair area below the level of the board so you can build it back up to the level of the board with the new patches.
Amazing Video - I am going to the experts bro!! too much work
Haha thanks man, your right it’s a lot of work!
great job bro......
Simplesmente Perfeito !!!!!!
Obrigado!!
I love this video!! Perfect!! Good job!!

Dope 🤙
Did a lot of kayaks and repairs to same over the years. I like to bias my cloth.
Nice work bro! Regards from Brazil!
Obrigado cara! Amo Brasil! 🇧🇷
Nice work
Fuck yeah!! This video is outstanding. Honestly, doing ding repairs properly has been one of the harder things in my surf career. I never had anyone who could show me how to do it properly and there weren't a lot of great videos out there. This one is really good.
PS: I am quite lazy about sanding. I feel like I should invest in grinder eventually.
Thanks man I appreciate your feedback! Glad you liked it. My sander definitely speeds the process and saves my forearms.
Nice video, your mate is stoked. I picked up on a few small things but the most important criticism I could give to anyone is your nose laminations went straight across the board from rail to rail. This a BIG no no in glassing. Essentially it has a created (assuming you used 6oz cloth) a 12oz ( plus your little patches beneath) crease or snapping point. Your repair is far stinger than the original lamination so if that board ever buckles, it's there it'll do it.
Look at tail patches on boards, you'll notice they all are cut in a V, diamond or almost a U shape for this very reason.
Nice video
Yeah I’ve learned that since this video. Thanks for the feedback 🤙
@@BendheimBoards Nice, the beauty of youtube is theres always some know it all to point out your mistakes haha.
As some positive feedback for you, many people over the years have mentioned your videos to me in my small ding repair shed in New Zealand so you should be very proud of that!
@@smallkinedings Rad, love to hear it. I never considered myself an expert, just showing my process that I continue to improve on. I always welcome constructive criticism!

@@BendheimBoards how sick would a board look with foam and ramen under a clear finish.
@@nintendogamer5472 ramen? 🤔
@@BendheimBoards picture this with a layer of foam under for floatation, ramen surf board.ruclips.net/video/Si8T8hZ3CiM/видео.html
@@nintendogamer5472 Might look cool, but all that resin would make the board really heavy

Amen brother! 👏👏
Love your videos man, you're inspiring.
What size of sanding paper do you use before you start to paint the board?
Thanks! I use 220 grit sandpaper to rough the surface for spray painting.
