"Woah, you're twisting my melon, man" "does it only work with einstein?"
I like how it's turning clockwise with the face out, and then when the face is in, it's turning counter clockwise. That's a 2nd mind freak right there!
If you force yourself to look only at the flat edges when the inverted side comes round you can see that it is still rotating clockwise, but because your brain inverts the face because it "must" be projected towards you it also appears to reverse the direction of turn.
This is all so CUTE! :D
All of them so exited and amazed, like they were still 5 years old and hearing about the space for the first time.
Why can't we have shows like this in Finland!? T^T
I've always loved QI. One of my favourite shows for years now. Long may it continue!
11 years ago. We're still at it.
I love this show it really does need to be broadcast in America, as we unfortunately do not have anything his intelligent on Television.
I'm just so glad there is RUclips!
What's with everyone commenting about cake?
It looks like shadows play a fairly big part in this illusion too, I have a feeling this illusion wouldn't work so well if the directed light was more central (the kind of effect you usually get from attaching a ring light to a camera. I'm also pretty sure this effect was utilised in the music video for Fade to Grey by Visage).
Side-lighting enhances the 3D contour of faces, with a frontal light it wouldn't work. That's why I never photo or film people with a camera-top flash or light - it flattens all their features.
"Ohh u twistin my melon maaaan..." I'm gonna use that in my calculus class tomorrow Lol.
loooooooooove Jimmy's reaction.
Yes, I watched this on iPlayer, and now watched it with the nation!
I just love Jimmy Carr's reaction XD
SHE FINALLY SAID CAKE
Thank you for being original with NerdCubed jokes and not just saying "I WAS SENT HERE BY [terrible joke relating to nerdcubed content]!"
The Sun, Shrimp and Steak; My favourite meal.
I saw the trick with the queen's face 17 years ago on the BBC! I've been performing it with various currencies ever since, to very appreciative audiences! :D I particularly recommend Abe Lincoln on the 5 dollar bill. :)
Roughly the same forme. About 20 years ago I used to pull that trick out all the time. I had actually forgotten about it until today. Doesn’t work with credit cards and wireless payments 😂.
This is why I love QI and Stephen Fry.
I absolutely love QI! Stoked to see this on phil's show!
@AgentDexter47 the light source is behind the mask and to the right. When the face is recessed, the shadow is on the back surface and because the mild is semi-transparent, you're seeing the darker areas through the plastic. So at 0:19, you're looking at the back of the shadow.
The mould is slightly translucent, to allow the light to shine through it. The shadow is coming through from the other side. The light source is in front of the camera.
What's really strange is that, at least at 4:30 in the morning, it looks like it actually begins to spin in the opposite direction.
SAY CAKE!
hahahah jimmy's laugh, omg so good
JUST SAY CAKE!!!!!!!!!
It works because it is translucent and carefully lit from the rear and side so the shadows seen through it are just like a face poking out...
Very clever, indeed! Too bad they are so expensive.
How expensive could it be to bend a piece of plastic into a certain shape?
sweiland75 It is a shame this face is so expensive. I suspect it is most likely vacuum formed, so it isn't expensive to make each, however, you have to pay for digitizing the face and the the transfer of the shape to a tool. If there is translucent plastic for 3-D printers, it could be done @ home.
Cheers
97 AUD for me 😢
It is because our brain only recognizes a face like this. Not a face turned in.
Except, of course, that this hypothesis was already disproven in 2013. ruclips.net/video/BaofyuCXZ_0/видео.html
There's no doubt that some elements of lighting can impact how the illusion manifests, but it's equally clear from this video that no amount of translucence is necessary to complete the effect. It's a trick of the brain, not of the lighting or camera angles. Our brain expects to see faces concave, and so it simply does.
It's similar to 3D anamorphic sidewalk art that is designed to give the impression of the image going below the surface of the street. Yes, you have to be standing at the right place to see the illusion, but it's not the artist tricking you as much as its the images distortions triggering your brain to trick itself.
Saw this last friday, still can't get over how creepy it is.
lol i love it wen they start shouting
thanks Stephen for that illusional video. had visual system at med school today, presenting form vision to my fellow students. That Video really helped me out and was good for a laugh here and there =)
QI is the best show ever
Lmao i love Jimmy Carr and Stephen Fry
CAKE and QI, perfect :)
The hollow mask illusion, you gotta love it!
I would kill for a show with Jimmy Carr and Lee Mack as regular guests.
It isn't just about your mind developing. We are inbuilt with short cuts in our mind to enable us to process the relevant information, disgard the rest and so become more effecient in percieving...
I found the inner concave face projection even more striking.
how does it cast a shadow when its meant to be the inside bit?
0:16 on the left of the face.
Yay! I can't wait for this show.
I learnt this in first year psych at uni.
I love Alan Davis!
@mesden it's the shadow on the other side. the light shines through the mold.
1st saw Richard Hawkins do this on his "waking up in the universe" series from the early 90s. Theyre all up on RUclips now!
the shadow is cast from the otherside, the plastic is translucent so the shadow can be seen
lmao the queen part was great too xD
Jimmy Carr is my favorite comedian.
Sooooo good!
i think shadow is something to do with it. gotta love stephen fry
i love QI it's one of the many things i love about being from England...
TankSenior, at 1:19, the host says, "We literally FILMED this (holding the mold)". Yes, they had a physical version, but they didn't actually rotate it... All the guests were viewing a video of the thing... If they rotated the real thing in front of them, most people (with 2 working eyes), will be able to judge depth and see if the face is bulging forwards or recessed behind.
I hope that's obvious to you now.
"Thats a great trick. I might cut me head off and scoop out me brain" 1:22.
omg they have that in my science class
Finally Series 9!!!
@fxcw85, i maybe, but look at it..when the face is poking out, you see the face turning from left to right...when its inside its turning from right to left
If the light was from above you'd be able to see the difference between the top of the object being lit when convex, or shadowed when concave, which is a clue your brain will use to decide, since it's used to seeing light from above more than light from below. But they helped make the illusion stronger by lighting it from the side. If the left of the face is bright and the right of the face is dark, that could be convex+light from left, or concave+light from right and it would look the same.
The fact that Nerd likes QI makes me love him even more.
@CloudNine201
the shadow is on the other side but you can see it because of the material
Absolutely true there chameleonclone. Spent some years with a young man who was autistic. You would have to tell him how you felt, because he had no way of 'reading' your face.
omg i love jimmy carr
Ooh I just can't wait for the new series to start tonight!!! Awesome :D
I'm glad this is the video we came to.
I love QI =D
Ice cream and cake
LOL the main guy was the bad guy from the Einstien love movie.
@Jimanjee21 It's actually just the shadow to the extruding part from being bit you can see it because the plastic is transparent
@MrBebopChamploo AHA! I just remembered! He plays a chef on Bones that Booth talks to sometimes!
the NerdCube^3 reference is strong with this once.
Jimmy + Lee = win
"Your twisting my melon maaaan" hahaha
@joshwakeman
I got that.
but being fascinated by tricks isn't brilliance either.
they didn't even describe the phenomenon behind it.
0:55 BLACK MAGIC!
Ahhhhh!! My brain!! It's melting!!
Check the direction of the shadown when the mast turns to the inside. You will understand whats going on there...
@soccer13pro2007 The material is probably translucent, so the shadow cast on the other side is visible on the side facing us.
We think of things as being a basic shape, without such cavities, it's just more useful. So when we are presented with something like this, which does not let us use our 3d vision, and where the light gives no clues, we automatically think of it as going outwards.
Phil loves Stephen Fry? Just more reason to love ya.
Thank you!
stephen fry is a boss (and so is alan davis
@Devoti Well in my experience a happy face, :) tends to mean it was a joke. No one ever puts :) at the end of a sentence if they're serious.
i LOVE this video (good thing i don't skip, heehee)
Future presenter of the show, Sandy is there.
Qi best programme ever made.
How can you not click on the mystery video link... it's so mysterious.
I FIGURED OUT HOW TO BEAT IT!
.
When the interior starts to come around, stare at the play / pause button in the corner of the window---and focus on the face only with your peripheral vision. It works.
@jorgeroxs47 it is, in a certain sense. Our brains interpret the electromagnetic radiation gathered by our eyes and spit out images which are useful in navigating the world around us.
For example, colors are features of our brains, not of the external world. There's nothing inherently "red" or "blue" about red or blue light - those are just different wavelengths of EM radiation. Our brains assign colors like labels.
It's nice that sxephil acknowlages the existence of Qi
MIND = BLOWN
@willman2k8 It's the shadow from the edge of the mask falling inside, which forms the same contours
Love this show too much... wish I had it in Canada too =/
Twisting my melon with awesome
they dont show the top which make a big difference, still its amazing
QI is so awesome
Oh i saw this on QI last week! lol
Thanks
Yes it would. We have particular brain cells that deal with human face recognition. Babies don't recognize faces because they see them since they're born, but rather they have an idea of what a face looks like in their brain and every human being they encounter is matched against that idea to answer the simple question: "is what I'm saying a face, or not?" In this illusion, our brain _wants_ to see a face, and that's why it will always work.
Untrue. The "Haunted Mansion" at Disneyland in Anaheim, CA takes advantage of this EXACT same illusion in the entryway/lobby to the main ride. There are two alabaster inlays in the wall in one side, lighted so they have no shadows to speak of.
The line is guided to approach them directly, so they appear to be two marble busts, but as you get closer and can get them at an angle/up close, you realize they're intricate 3-D carvings in the wall.
No translucency, no shadowplay.
All I have to say is Wow.
it also rotates in the opposite direction then what youre seeing.
@willman2k8 Its just because the sheet is so thin, the shadow from the face at the front can be seen on the back surface. Its probably not fake. Mr Fry would never let that happen ;)
Wow that kind of tweaked me out haha. Good job.
np, just glad to spread the QI love!
The statues in the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland are the same concept. That's why it looks like their heads are following you when they're actually concave face molds.
I'm sorry BBC, but this programme lacked enough cake to satisfy me. Good day to you.
Everyone should know who Jimmy carr is too!!!! And everyone should watch QI!!!
i love lee mack!!
Saw this at Mount Vernon in D.C.
@Jimanjee21 It's the shadow on the other side, you can see it because it's only thin plastic, QI would never cheat!
