In the old days, like the 70's and 80s, the fighting was full on. They cleaned it up with fines and bans etc. If you throw a punch for example, you can be out for a big chunk of the season, hence there's a lot of shoving, wrestling etc. When there is no scrap and the team's skills are on fire, I think the game is far more exciting than these fights.

There is a huge rivalry between Essendon and Hawthorn dating back to the 1980s, when Hawthorn beat Essendon in the 1983 grand final, and Essendon returned the favour by beating Hawthorn in the 1984 and 1985 grand finals, and they've pretty much hated each other since.

It’s footy season in Australia at the moment and we are going into round 5 of the season. You should definitely try and watch a full game if you can, maybe one that will be close like Essendon v Melbourne, Collingwood v St Kilda, Richmond v Swans because they are the really good ones to watch. There isn’t as much fighting now and there are much stricter rules but every now and then a few players will get into a heated argument and it’ll make for some entertainment. It’s always really funny to watch non-Australians react to AFL because we’re all so used to it and don’t realise how different it is to other sports. It’s what we grew up with so it’s normal to us but it’s cool to watch others react for the first time and it’s interesting to see a different point of view on it. These clips take me back to when I was a kid in the early 70s in Perth. When Ron Barassi was big in the game. Watching games on our Black and White TV. I played from the under-9s to the under-12s, but then we ended up leaving Perth.
just for clarification - if you throw a punch in AFL, youre looking at a 4 months or so suspension from playing Youll be brought before the AFL tribunal for (essentially) an internal court case. Thats not a good thing for your team, or your career

Fights like the Hawthorn vs Essendon melee are quite rare nowadays, and several players were sidelined for a few weeks for punching and head-butting. NB the games shown were reasonably old from 10 to 15 years ago or more. 😵💫😜...the umpires are more strict nowadays.
I had the pleasure of meeting Barry hall(the big bald guy) last year, 2022. I went to the Gold coast for work. He lives there now. The reason he was like that and a good hit was because he was brought up to be a boxer. His dad was a boxer and wanted him to be one but he loved footy more. So whenever someone attacks him, its his natural reaction to hit them. ha. But hes a good guy. He's a lot more relaxed now.
If you’re ever over here for a game, make sure you choose a game where there is a big rivalry between the 2 teams, there are some teams when they play each other the games are so good. Big fights like this are rarely in the game anymore.
If you want games with atmospheres like this, you need to go to a big rivalry game. That being said there's a few easy ones to point out: west coast vs Fremantle, Adelaide vs port Adelaide, hawthorn vs essendon, collingwood vs carlton, collingwood vs essendon, essendon vs carlton, Richmond vs collingwood, Richmond vs Melbourne, in recent history hawthorn vs Geelong, theres other cross town rivalries but they aren't quite as intense, such as the Q clash and the battle of the bridge. The fighting isn't as prevalent as it has been in history, but at the games you can feel the intensity.
I hope you get to see a live game of AFL. You don't get to really see the incredible speed of the game on video. I think seeing it live will have you in awe!
If/when you get out to Australia, you'll love this. It's like $15-$40 AUD for a ticket to a game. They happen in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide, and maybe a couple games in Perth. But the east coast is where the majority of the games are. You'll be able to pick up a game almost any time you're in one of these cities. And you're bound to see some shit go down. It's a brutal sport, as you already know from all your other viewings of the games. Like NFL without pads.

I was not quite 14 years old when the infamous Essendon-Richmond brawl broke out in front of me at Windy Hill in 1974. Cops were on the field trying to break it up! Bloody Mal Brown is all I can say!

The was cleaned up but AFL hard hits or siimilar will get you to heavy hits and bumps from the last 20 years. Compared to those two eras the currant game is sanitized heavily. You have to remember, we are a country born on violence. We began as convicts, so any sport was against the coppers back then, or other convicts. But the best fighting used to be in the regional country leagues. I used to play for The Basin FC, we were last on the ladder and got beaten by 30 goals every game, and our enforcers used to go out with the aim of knocking teeth out and breaking bones. And if you didn't play out a game with whatever injury you had (I played with broken fingers, wrists, cracked and dislocated shoulder, etc), you didn't get another game. I'm glad it's changed and they work on player welfare more nowadays. I struggle with my injuries nearly 20 years later.

I was at the Hawthorn vs Essendon game (2nd clip) and the feeling in the crowd was so eerie. It seriously felt like it was about to go off in the crowd.
I’m a life long hawthorn supporter, and I’m the late 90s-early 2000s, Essendon bullied us and treated us with utter disrespect on and off the field. It came down to this day in 2004 where at the half time break, a Hawthorn football club legend Dermott Brereton pulled a couple of players aside and told them that they needed to put a line in the sand on being disrespected and take a stand against Essendon and the way we were treated by them. Dermott wasn’t and hasn’t ever coached Hawthorn, he’s just a very polarising figure. After this day, He received massive criticism for apparently inciting what you saw in the video, which he viciously denied. But the coach Peter Schwab had an altered approach on this day. He was looking down the path of losing his job, and having Essendon once again looking like they were going to bully us, he wanted to see us ‘fly the Hawthorn flag’ The line in the sand refers to the fact that since this day, they haven’t bullied us physically or disrespect us to this extent, since then. In fact, since the year 2004, Essendon have not won a final and Hawthorn have claimed 4 Premierships. The tide changed in football between these two teams, ultimately proving this game to be a ‘Line in the sand’.. We stood up for ourselves, and it well and truly paid off.
Back before the full on bans , the fights where down right dangerous and also took so much bloody time it messed with the flow, which is way more exciting to watch.

clip 2 is what footy used to be like 80s and earlier. Obviously not the big brawl parts all the time but there were a lot more fights and it was generally a lot rougher. if there was someone in your way you just ran through them and maybe stuck out an elbow for good measure. barry hall the bald guy was the last of the players that you just don't mess with because he will fuck you up. Hi mate, keep up the great reactions on everything that you show. These fights weren't the best one's. I agree with Brad Griffin in that the 70's and 80's there were some great fights. OBTW the big bald guy in the last match is my nephew and he did have anger issues for sure, but that was because of all of the shit he copped during the games until he lost it. Not the way to be remembered from a great career. If you ever get to Australia and come to Sydney, make sure it's during the football season and I'll take you to the SCG to watch the Sydney Swans.

The consensus here is that yes he was tough but his hit on Brent Staker when Staker wasn't looking was not tough but shady. A sucker punch is a dishonourable move. With that, Barry played within the rules the vast majority of the time and showed great physicality and evoked true intimidation doing so. He's respected for the way he played, whilst his poor actions are generally seen as dark moments for him personally. Having said that, as men, we all have dark moments in the history of our lives

coming from a freo fan some footy rivalry is massive- for instance freo v eagles is always a classic example, being called the derby, and same as many other teams. Those are always the best to watch.

So I’m a massive bombers fan (the red and black) and my dad is a hawks fan (brown and yellow…the color of your bowel movements lol) and we were at that game. Fighting is part of any sports but there is an AFL Tribunal where they do or can face suspension and fine after the game is over. Usually on a Monday the incident is reviewed.

Incredibly, history shows that this is a young Hawthorn team whose spirit was being questioned against a classy, dominant Essendon team. This Hawthorn team went on to win 4 premierships once these players matured and reached their peak. Essendon fell away to become irrelevant since 2004, with the exception of its performance enhancement scandal in 2012. As a Geelong fan (Hawthorn's main modern rival), even I can respect what Hawthorn achieved since this game.

The game is so much better in person. There’s lots of movement off the ball and you can see it live. TV just can’t capture it. You’ll love it!

We began as convicts, so any sport was against the coppers back then, or other convicts.
But the best fighting used to be in the regional country leagues.
I used to play for The Basin FC, we were last on the ladder and got beaten by 30 goals every game, and our enforcers used to go out with the aim of knocking teeth out and breaking bones.
And if you didn't play out a game with whatever injury you had (I played with broken fingers, wrists, cracked and dislocated shoulder, etc), you didn't get another game.
I'm glad it's changed and they work on player welfare more nowadays. I struggle with my injuries nearly 20 years later.
jps u should definitely come to australia it is the best country in the world and afl is the best sport in the whole world its so entertaining and australia has a great dollar if ur from america and if u do come go to the MCG its the stadium in melbourne and it’s the biggest one you should definitely come to australia trust me you’ll have a ball!

These 3 clips don't even scratch the surface. However whoever made this video shout out to them because it shows the lead up and niggle of why what happens happened. They're human football players not Angels and emotions get the better of anyone.
They have toughened up on the rules a lots since then due to some bad injuries.
I live in Melbourne and while there are still scraps during the game, there’s no way that a player wouId get away with what these guys did without getting lengthy suspensions.

I was at the Hawthorn vs Essendon game (2nd clip) and the feeling in the crowd was so eerie. It seriously felt like it was about to go off in the crowd.

I’m a life long hawthorn supporter, and I’m the late 90s-early 2000s, Essendon bullied us and treated us with utter disrespect on and off the field.
It came down to this day in 2004 where at the half time break, a Hawthorn football club legend Dermott Brereton pulled a couple of players aside and told them that they needed to put a line in the sand on being disrespected and take a stand against Essendon and the way we were treated by them.
Dermott wasn’t and hasn’t ever coached Hawthorn, he’s just a very polarising figure.
After this day, He received massive criticism for apparently inciting what you saw in the video, which he viciously denied.
But the coach Peter Schwab had an altered approach on this day. He was looking down the path of losing his job, and having Essendon once again looking like they were going to bully us, he wanted to see us ‘fly the Hawthorn flag’
The line in the sand refers to the fact that since this day, they haven’t bullied us physically or disrespect us to this extent, since then. In fact, since the year 2004, Essendon have not won a final and Hawthorn have claimed 4 Premierships. The tide changed in football between these two teams, ultimately proving this game to be a ‘Line in the sand’..
We stood up for ourselves, and it well and truly paid off.
Back before the full on bans , the fights where down right dangerous and also took so much bloody time it messed with the flow, which is way more exciting to watch.

clip 2 is what footy used to be like 80s and earlier. Obviously not the big brawl parts all the time but there were a lot more fights and it was generally a lot rougher. if there was someone in your way you just ran through them and maybe stuck out an elbow for good measure.

Hi mate, keep up the great reactions on everything that you show. These fights weren't the best one's. I agree with Brad Griffin in that the 70's and 80's there were some great fights. OBTW the big bald guy in the last match is my nephew and he did have anger issues for sure, but that was because of all of the shit he copped during the games until he lost it. Not the way to be remembered from a great career. If you ever get to Australia and come to Sydney, make sure it's during the football season and I'll take you to the SCG to watch the Sydney Swans.

Barry Hall was a tough bloke on the field but apparently off the field he is the nicest guy.
The consensus here is that yes he was tough but his hit on Brent Staker when Staker wasn't looking was not tough but shady. A sucker punch is a dishonourable move. With that, Barry played within the rules the vast majority of the time and showed great physicality and evoked true intimidation doing so. He's respected for the way he played, whilst his poor actions are generally seen as dark moments for him personally. Having said that, as men, we all have dark moments in the history of our lives

coming from a freo fan some footy rivalry is massive- for instance freo v eagles is always a classic example, being called the derby, and same as many other teams. Those are always the best to watch.

Fighting is part of any sports but there is an AFL Tribunal where they do or can face suspension and fine after the game is over. Usually on a Monday the incident is reviewed.

These days football doesn't have a lot of fights. Country football will still give a few. I play 400+ games before hanging up my own boots. Played a alot of VFL also. Been in a lot of battles haha. Have a beer with them after though. All in good spirit

Incredibly, history shows that this is a young Hawthorn team whose spirit was being questioned against a classy, dominant Essendon team. This Hawthorn team went on to win 4 premierships once these players matured and reached their peak. Essendon fell away to become irrelevant since 2004, with the exception of its performance enhancement scandal in 2012. As a Geelong fan (Hawthorn's main modern rival), even I can respect what Hawthorn achieved since this game.
