So now we can get a tone-wood debate on cabs as well?
I thought the Mesa's sounded amazing!
engl was my favorite
agreed
ENGL FTW
yes and the mesa 2v12 was also good.
1:58 A Engl Pro
2:04 B Marshall 1960
2:12 C Marshall 1960 Vintage
2:19 D Mesa 2X12
2:25 E Mesa Oversise 2X12
A and C were my favorites. I really liked the tone of both of them, and had that tight djenty tone.
I also liked them, but I thought E was the best
A and C, same as you. This video convnced me to buy A. I’m mixing it with a PRS Archon
Only four minutes and twenty seconds of video with concise, clear and straight-to-the-point information? This is great!
Engl and Marshall 1960V were suprisingly good for these heavy riffs
My exact choices if I were to buy one
Those two stole the show for sure!
The ENGL Pro sounded best imo
I agree
also agree - engl cab sounded best by a mile im sure thats why its most expensive
+Venom Overlord wish I had money
where the hell do you live? In europe the ENGL is at the same pricing as other cabs. Only the crappy mesa 4x12 are 1399€ (wich is 1550$)
agree absolutely! the Engl had the best balance of being tight yet also feel like the sound was breathing and vibrant.
Even in a blind test like this I preferred C and D, which it turned out were 2 of my faves in real world use too. Great way to do a comparison, thank you.
Hey Glenn. Maybe you could do a "How to choose a tube amp" Video. That might be useful.
This!
Check out Olas channel he just did one with like 5/6 amps. It's labeled "all amps sound the same"
go to a store > play some amps > buy the one you like the most > done.
That shit is no science.
+Mal Reynolds I agree man, I test drove my 6505+ years ago, at my local music center, and loved it. Also with my evh I played my friends first and decided to get it from there
You could just spend a bunch of money for something everyone else is playing or you could be your own man and get something that sounds great to you. Those are your options Personal Preference or Trendy and Expensive. Cabinet Construction is important, remember that.
I liked the ENGL and Marshall 1960 vintage the best. I love blind tests like this for music. Best way to choose.
I liked A and D. I like a nice amount of mids and those sounded the most pleasing to my ears!
Please next time: HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR BASS PLAYER :)
Find one that can change strings by himself. He's the one that can eat soup without needing three people to help him.
What's soup?
naah soup is for fucking keyboard players. as a bass player I only eat RAW meat to sustain my meathead
that's easy. find a guitar player.
Hey I might be your guy I know how to put my strings on and I love a good steak! Also I'm pretty good at keeping time but who cares about that though lol
It's a tie for me between C and A. I liked how A sounded beefy without being muddy. However I also liked the presence of C.
Marshall 1960 Vintage reigns supreme
i cant believe i was actually lucky enough to meet you today in andertons! i wish i told you how i watch your videos on a daily basis. i also wish i told you that you are my favorite youtuber
haha lucky you :D
Leaked info that a Chappers/SMG collab coming??? Maybe???
probably not
but the new next sounds like is going to be oasis! they were filming it right next to me. the guy with the Afro was right next to me
Here's Capt. Lee and Glenn in the shop today :D facebook.com/CaptainAnderton/photos/a.349618808487167.82453.347820195333695/1059965570785817/?type=3&theater
I liked the Marshall 1960 the best; nice smooth tone, not overly sharp.
Damn I was thinking of getting a mesa cabinet and .... they were my least favorites... :/
interresting video, thanks Glen
Look at used orange cabs they sound pretty good
I don't know much about Orange cab but yeah I have to give it a try I suppose.
Thanks! :)
+Kaosware No problem glad I can help!
Well remember that whatever mic/technique combo that works for one cab may not work for another cab, so consider being able to tweak that to make it sound more fitting to your tastes. Also remember that the way the cab is responding to the room does not come through on video. A mesa may feel better in the room than a Marshall, maybe not. Most important part of deciding on a cab is to take them for a test drive yourself if you can, before making the final decision.
that's true, I have a small blackstar cab which "sounds" different since I moved out a few months ago...
in any case I think you are right, you probably can't decide only based on a video test and/or comments and review, the best is of course to try it for yourself
Really great man. Thanks for doing this.
You're very welcome!
You and mixerman rock
@@SpectreSoundStudios great test. Even through you tube compression in this test I could actually hear the differences. 👍
One question as you mentioned, even I can't find the answer to, hopefully you can provide your opinion. I'm running a Marshall dsl 1 hr into an orange ppc112 V30 for home volume playing. I'm not happy with the tone because I'm not getting that low end thump and getting a little fizzyness when playing crunch tones. Will the tone improve if I get a 4x12 cabinet or is it that the 1 watt head is just not capable of that? It seems plenty loud, infact I can't crank it at home on the 1 watt setting. Appreciate your input
5 years later: I watched this again because of the “Can you play Metal on a Marshall” video. Even though Glenn has been saying what really matters is how it sounds in a mix for years this video truly illustrates it. I’m still amazed by how different these samples sound solo’d vs in a mix. To me they sounded shitty on their own, yet epic in a mix. Great riff too btw.
i really like how thick and punchy yet slight unfocused sound from D . 212 sound awesome. easy on the back too
I liked the 1960V and the Mesa 2x12 best out of these. Through some testing and a lot of research I know that I'm looking for a 2x12 oversized or semi-closed Cabinet with Celestion Creambacks...but your video has shown me, that there are definitely more factors to consider. Thanks Glenn!
Marshall Vintage being the C option... never thought it will be! Total surprise! Best tone (warm, defined...)
OF COURSE the Marshall 1960 Vintage was my fav....
Purchased a 1960 vintage a while back. It was such a relieve that it was my favorite in this vid, alongside with the Engl.
Engle and Mesa 2x12 were my favorite. I was surprised on the Mesa oversized sounding so thin! I use one with a peavey 6505+ and I get a lot more growl and mids. It sounded really thin! Almost like an amp simulator or something. Anyway, great video! And thanks for taking the time to make them!
thought so to 2x12 sounded more full the 4x12 sounded kind of thin and muffled
Same, I was shocked I liked the 2x12 so much.
It's between the Engl Pro and the Mesa 4x12 for me, but I really liked the 1960 Vintage, too. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these, really.
1) Marshall vintage
2) mesa 2x12
3) engl pro
4) mesa 4x12
5) Marshall 1960
but I'm a huge fan of an open tone
Steven Signorelli The Marshall Vintage and Mesa 2x12 both sound great, my favorite the 2x12, has a strong projection, great low mids and decent high mids.
Same
Same here
I am the same, although the top three are basically tied.
Most useful would be with vocals. It’s the main issue with all guitarmix comparisons, no one has vocals in the mix and those take up the most important frequencies. What sounds like a thin guitar solo or in a mix may fit very well when the voice takes up a lot of mids.
That Engl Cab sounds beautiful, I find myself liking cabs with much thicker woods such as the Schecter Hellwin Cab, Hellraiser Cab, and Orange candy
*cabs
+Joshua Maletta i totally agree
good call! I agree - the Engl seemed to have the best balance of lively presence while also keeping a nice tightness to the sound.
i have that engl
but its very sharp sounding for me
according this video id prefere cab B ( marshall ), sounded more suitable for live play because it was not sharp , had like more wider sound .
Found it difficult to pick between 1960V and Mesa 2x12. To my ears the 1960V was more open than the others, but I'd probably take the Mesa because it's smaller. The oversized Recto was too scooped to my taste. Nice comparison. Thanks for it.
I watched this three times and still can't tell hear any difference between A and C, they both sound great. Thanks for posting this.
E for me.
A is second best, C and D sound the same to me, and B seems to be missing highs, almost like it was recorded in 22khz.
personally i feel c and d sound completely different right @ 2:19, kind of a jump in the mids maybe? it was much more subtle with the whole band. i think E was my favorite too.
ps that timestamp goes right to cabinet D, so go more to like 2:16
After repeated listening i think i can hear *some* difference, but only when soloed, with band it's completely lost.
Right? I'm not crazy, B sounds like it was low-passed pretty badly, A, C and E are the best
I liked B, but I'm into pretty dark sounds myself. E was way harsh to my ears.
The "B" cabinet was my favorite. Very interesting; I recently did a "shootout"of my own at my cousin's place that featured a Marshall 1960, a Mesa 2x12 like the one featured here, a Peavey MS 412 with the steel grill, my Marshall 1936 with the same speakers as the 1960 and a Randall Diavlo 1x12 cab and the one I preferred over all of them was the Mesa 2x12 with the Peavey coming in second. The little Randall was also badass but I had to dip the mids some compared to the Marshall cabs. I love these shootouts.
I loved both the Mesa 4x12 and the ENGL Pro
Engl Pro and Mesa 2x12 were my favs. I love this video, helps keep the brand snobs honest
Mind blown... I was wrong in all my guesses. Who would've thought A was the Engl wow. It was the best sounding one to me.
Engl pro and Marshall 1960 vintage by far my fav sounding cabinets. Tightness, clarity and enough punch for what i need.
I agree with that. Hard to pick between them, they both sound really good
I liked the Marshall vintage best and I was surprised that I didn't like the mesa oversized. to me it sounded like a mt-2.
I wish you would've found an Orange ppc412 to do as well.
considering building a 2x12 custom cab and loading it with vintage 30 greenbacks for my orange dark terror, once again Glen comes through and saves the noob!! much love Glen!!!
C was my favorite, expecting the engl or the marshal v
Yup, guessed it
that was the perfect video - straight to the point with just enough sensible speaking. i liked the sheer professionalism shining through it. i might actually subscribe!
Close mic cab comparisons aren't my favorite tho.... the smallest change in mic placement makes a big difference. it would have been nice to just mark the floor and switch out cabs to that floor position with a room mic that never moved.
This!!
Exactly. My 1960 sounds like the guttural voice of god in my space, but it sounded brittle and terrible here.
He does use a bit of equipment that keeps the mic in the same place, so the position of the mic shouldn't of changed.
On the other hand, he is a studio guy, so he's probably more interested in what the cab would actually sound on an album. I think you'd really have to be in the room with the cab to really get a good idea of how the cab might sound while you're practicing or playing live.
that'd be another good comparison video really. Then you get more of an idea how it would sound live unmiced.
I’ve just started gong down the gear rabbit hole. This helped me a lot. Thanks
E, A (great)
D, C (very good, D wins in solo, only a small difference in mix)
B (Not a fan...maybe ok for rhythm)
My thoughts exactly
Liked C the best
I'm a newly found Bassist that joined a band named As Tides Turn here in Ventura County . I just wanted to say that Glenn is one of the greatest motivators and inspirations to me as a musician. Everything I've seen from him is some of the best tips and words of wisdom I've seen, I want to be amongst one of the bassists he doesn't consider a meathead. \m/
Excellent
When the whole band was playing, I could hardly tell a difference. Like, I knew there was a difference there, but it felt like something that could be changed with a little bit of dialing on the amp. It was much much more noticeable with the guitar by itself. Leads me to wonder how much difference it would make on stage with the full band? At anyrate, I chose
5. Marshal 1960 (least)
4. Mesa 4x12
3.Mesa 2x12
2. Engl
1. Marshall 1960 Vintage (fave)
thanks for the Video Glenn!
I played a Marshall 1960 in stores (I didn’t like it in this demo in or out of the mix), and it sounded cool with a Tube Screamer and a Micro Dark. I know that that isn’t a conclusive test, and I actually liked C (Marshall 1960 Vintage) the best. I’ll probably end up going to a store with one of my heads and try out a bunch of the cabs they have.
I liked D. Interesting to see that it was the 2x12
Really surprised but the ENGL and Marshall 1960 vintage just blew me away.I knew the mesa was going to be darker, but damn was that a difference. Love to see more of this, maybe with orange and possibly some more cost effective cabs like Avatar or Panama!
The engl and 1960 v kicked ass
The Mesa 4x12 sounded fat as well
Not a great fan of the rest... Definitely learned something new today! Didn't know the construction had such a great effect on tone.
Agreed!
This was great Glenn. I started doing this virtually with my ir's in my helix. I test to see which one fits the room best out of my 5 most used ir combinations. Huge help for when you dial a tone in, with a modeler, at rehearsals (usually a smaller space) then get to a larger venue and you're not cutting through the mix. I just audition the ir blocks until one sonicly lines up and , with in a minute, I've customized my tone to the room.
I loved to Marshall 1960 vintage & the Mesa oversise my least favourite was the Marshall 1960
C was my favorite. It fit the best in the mix if the bass had just a tiny tad more 800-1k bite. It's amazing how changing the cab can change a mix. Blew my mind! What also blew my min is that c sounded worse by itself.
Mesa 2×12 sounds like what I need
Emil Sielemann I've just come back and listened to this video again (having forgotten which one was which) and I now agree with you entirely.
same bro. Mesa for me
I liked the Marshall Vintage best followed by the Mesa 2x12. The tonal differences seemed to get lost in the mix so I loved the isolated guitar part!
ENGL Pro and Marshall 1960 Vintage for me,
Brandon White is a legend, went to high school with him. So cool to see a local channel get such steam.. Nice work sir!
I like the sound of C myself. 😀
hell yes. do this video with as many cabs as you can get your hands on. super useful
Do a similar video but with medium range cabs and low range
Cool. Same thing for bass. I send Glenn's link to a few cabinet makers. Hope it helps. It would if everyone that watches his show did. What did you think of him and Warren together?
A and E are my two favorites. Would love to hear both of them together in a mix.
mind mentioning the amp, settings, microphone, placement, pickups, cables, interface and recording software please? there's a fuckton more variable that need to be made known before making a possible choice.
+Rob Lockley I mentioned most of what you asked. Pay attention.
No you didn't. I don't know if there was a clip you accidentally left out, but I just watched the video twice and I can't find any mention of the mic(s) used, how the cabs were micced, or what guitar was used (I realise we can see it in the video, but most of us can't recognize things like that on site, much less know what electronics are in them). While I don't think these are all particularly important, it would be courteous to at least tell us what microphones were used and how they were placed.
Does it matter that much? You get a constant tone and he shows you exactly how each cab sounds. What difference would it make if he played a jackson? Would that change which cab you liked best?
Yes, it would. I wouldnt be able to tell what the cab would sound like without it going through my own rig. It's like buying a car by watching somebody else driving it around.Jart
Rob Lockley you get a general idea. Tell me is there anybody on the internet who does gear reviews with the same exact rig as you?
The Mesa 2X12 was my favorite, I'll keep it in mind. Thanks for the helpful video!
Cabinets A and D were the best.
I didn't think I would like the Engl, but it was my fav of the bunch. These blind test are great because they take away my bias.
Turns out I like engl best, Marshall least and Mesa 2nd.
comparing how you look here with your current videos you did amazing with your weigh loss. much love glenn!
The ENGL has it.
+Lalo Landa The pic shown is that of a 4x12.
Crazy how well the Mesa 2x12 held up against those brutes! Makes me feel even better about mine. Great cab.
Mesa 2X12
C and D for me.
I use 2 /1960A's that I modded by front mounting the speakers. i love them.
Cabinet D for me, b sounds like there is a pillow inside the cabinet
Great shootout, Glenn. The Marshall 1960 (B) and the Mesa 4x12 (E) both sounded really muddy. The other three were pretty much equally good. Fantastic experiment.
mesa 2x12 vins!!!
The Marshall 1960 V just blew my mind!!!!
Marshall 1960 vintage was nicest
The engl has a distinctly clear tone I love!
A, C & D sounded fine, B & E had poor definition imo
Basically did the same thing when i bought my first valve amp. I picked 2 by 12 cabinets becouse of the size and weight (live in 3rd floor with no lift)
I ordered 3 different cabs and then just tested them against each other, i was totally blown away by how different they sound (all loaded with Vintage 30)
this video does not live up to its title
Loved the video. Coincidentally perfect timing. I'm in the market for a cab and have no idea what to get since I've been buying combos my whole life. Would love to see more videos like this! It's hard to KNOW what I'm buying. Since a lot of places don't necessarily have what I want or don't let you test everything out. Because in the end. I need to sit down with each equipment and play it. So this video narrows things down and makes the whole process a little less daunting. Thanks man!
Guitarist need to downpick more. Would make it sound so much better.
For real!!!! Dude sure is "laid back"! Down picking would help that riff VERY much!
People always say that, but I dunno... I always get way better tone when I pick upwards. It sounds much clearer and "djentier".
the Marshall vintage and the Mesa Oversize 4X12 just have the right amount of bite and clarity. Definitely leaning towards a 4X12 cab now
A and C sounded pretty good. Ampeg used to make a great 4x12 back in the day that was matched to the VL1002 .Great amp great cab
Really enjoyed that. Being a Marshall guy I picked them right out, but really liked the boogie cabs.
Must say i really dig the tonality of the Vintage 1960 Marshall cab. Hell, I was half expecting it to be something other than a Marshall. Thanks for the video Glenn.
I've had the Marshall 1960 since I was 15 years old. Have been beating the hell out of it ever since, playing hard rock and metal.I am now 39 and haven't had a single issue with it and it sounds perfect. It doesn't sound anything like the one on this video, but I am using a Marshall JVM410H. I Totally love the way it sounds.
Great shootout. I have one of the Marshall 1960 cab but I replaced the stock spkrs with Celestion V30s in the 16 ohm variety. I like the sound the 16 ohm spkrs get since you have to push the amp harder because of the ohms.
Thanks Glenn, this video was really eye opening for me. Keep up the good work.
A, C, and D for me, I think my favorite was the Marshall 1960 Vintage though; I'll have to start saving up for one!
Awesome video! I'm currently in the market for a 4x12, and the Mesa oversized 4x12 sounded the best to my ears.
Also note that speakers wear in with time, which is why a lot of older & well used cabs sound great even if they might not be your 1st choice with a newer rig. 80s Marshall cabs seem to have done this right. Vintage Orange, Sound City & etc can also be diamonds.
The cones also sound different from each other once they age.
General rule of thumb is that the smaller the volume of cab the tighter the sound. Ditto with the stiffer the construction. I'm a big fan (although I don't have one) of Diezel cabs with v30s, they have a lot of internal reinforcement. But I have a really nice-sounding Framus Dragon 4x12 with v30s, and even though I don't use it personally as have switched to bass it gets run weekly.
A and C were my favorite by far (Engl Pro and Marshall 1960 Vintage)!
A and D for me. I have this hooked up to my studio monitors so I'm getting a really nice sound. I definitely expected the Mesa to sound good but now I have to go check out that Engl.
Like the Marshall 1960 vintage, crisp crunch tone, clean to the ears.
I love to see somebody paying attention to such an important element regarding tone. I myself use a Sovtek MG100 head, and I am using a 90s Ampeg 8x10 bass cabinet. For guitar that is (I use it for bass guitar too, but that's a different matter). You can really feel the phase coherence of the 8 speakers, which is quite a design feat. I love it, though not very gig friendly :)
I found that I prefer the 1960 Vintage the best. The Mesa 2x12 was my second favorite. I just wish I could have heard the whole riff on each cabinet instead of only getting parts on each. One determining factor for me would be octaves because it really shows how the tone is carried between a low and mid or mid and high frequency at the same time. If something has amazing lows but crap highs, I don't want it, and the reverse is also true.
One of the cabs in the end is named Mashall but doesn't matter, awesome video Glenn! I am watching it for the third time, I always watch your videos when they come out and then keep replaying them later :)
The non vintage 30's marshall 1960 with the gt75's or whatever they are stood out like a sore thumb. I'm happy using vintage 30s in everything at this point. They transform every amp I try them with
I was totally in the market for a Mesa 4 x 12 deal, but that Engl just seemed balanced and tonally broader... Have a new market to look into now.
Thanks!
