I'm 17 and driving my brother, he was15, to his friends house. He puts this tape in as i pull to a stop sign, and he tells me his way is clear. As i start to pull through the stop sign the words FREEZE FRAME blasted through the speakers. I slam on the brakes to avoid what i knew was an oncoming car. There wasn't one; the road was empty, and my brother burst out laughing To this day, 40+ years later, he'll still bring it up.
Man the summer of '82 was just amazing !... so many hits and J. Geils Band was a super memorable part of it, hanging out by the car down by the lake after a swim at twilight with this playing on everybody's radio...

J. Guile's used to come into a store where I worked. I thanked him by saying "Thank You Mr. Guiles", and he said, "Oh please, call me John". He was just so nice! RIP!
At the end of their career, the J. Geils band was more pop and had a lot of success during this period. Early music was R & B, Blues influenced. A great live band. Listen to Musta Got Lost, Santuary, Houseparty, Love-itis, Chimes, Monkey Island, I Do. And so many more.
I agree! Everyone focuses on the pop hits of the MTV era, and don't know anything about their great early material. I think their best song is Monkey Island, although it's not one of their earliest songs.
FORTY YEARS, I've loved this song. One of the coolest keyboard riffs of all time. Gotta love the J. Geils Band for cranking out classics like this. "Love Stinks" should be your next one. OR, if you like, you can do one of lead singer Peter Wolf's solo stuff, like "Lights Out" or "Come As You Are". Great tunes. I would also LOVE for you guys to do a song from the same time period (early 80s) with a rockin' rhythm that'll get your feet tappin - "Goody Two Shoes" by Adam Ant. Another classic. (To answer your question - the keyboardist's name is Seth Justman.)
“Centerfold” is still my favorite from them, “Freeze Frame” will always be my introduction to J. Geils Band. I hope you consider The Romantics, “Talking In Your Sleep” or “What I Like About You” both fun songs I think you’ll enjoy 😃
The J Geils Band were such a fun group with very catchy songs. J Geils was actually the guitarist, and Peter Wolf was the lead vocalist. You have now reacted to 2 of their biggest songs. You just recently reacted to Open Arms by Journey. "Centerfold" was the culprit that kept that song from going to number one.
I liked "Flamethrower". There's also a rap version from 1983 by Felix & Jarvis. Both versions were used for breakdancing and were played on R&B radio stations. "Lights Out" (solo song by Peter Wolf) was played on R&B radio too.
I was trying to remember what was on the flip side of that 45 I had! All I could recall was that I really liked the song. Flamethrower and Freeze Frame. 😁
Love Stinks was the first I saw of them back when HBO (perhaps?) played music videos before MTV came out. Love Stinks is sort of the anthesis of the first two songs you've heard in that it's propelled by a monster guitar hook. Fun video, too.
That's an alto sax. We are used to seeing the tenor sax such as in the Hall and Oates songs which is much larger. Then of course you have the baritone sax. A soprano sax is not only smaller than the alto sax but does not have the curve to the bell but is just straight.
Sax player here: there were two different saxes in this video - an alto and a curved (rare) soprano sax - soprano saxes are normally straight like a clarinet (for example, Kenny G), but curved ones do exist.
This song is a sing-along STAPLE in my family! Even my sister, who does not follow 80s music as much as the rest of us, knows this song! J. Geils Band is a fun group to listen to!
The band was John Geils on guitar, Peter Wolf on vocals, Richard Salwitz on harmonica and sax, Seth Justman on vocals and keyboard, Stephen Bladd on drums and Danny Klein on bass
Great band... Both of the songs you've done by them so far has been from the same 80s album. It was a great album... every song was a gem. If you want another from that album try "Flamethrower". It's got a funky beat and has some harmonica. They changed their sound for the 80s. You should really give their 70s stuff a listen. Most of the 70s stuff was at it's best with Live versions. My two favs are the medley "Wammer Jammer/Hard Driving Man" from their Live Full House album or their "Musta Got Lost" from their Live Blow Your Face Out album (you have to get the version with the intro included).
Early J Geils sounds really different. I really like the older stuff. Whammer Jammer is a rollicking harmonica instrumental. I Must of Got Lost, First I Look at the Purse, So Sharp. If you want a weird, funny song, try No Anchovies Please.
J GEILS BAND put out one of my favorite live albums ever " Full House" in 1972. Saw them live a couple of years later and they rocked. " You Got To Give It To Me " is a funky track by them that i really dig a lot.
Gotta also try some of their earlier stuff: "(Ain't Nothin' But a) House Party" "Looking for a Love" "Hard Drivin' Man" "Love-Itis" "Come Back" "Love Stinks" "Just Can't Wait" and a classic live cover version of Wilson Pickett's "Land of a Thousand Dances." I' be remiss if I also didn't include the iconic harmonica instrumental, "Whammer Jammer"
"Freeze Frame" and "Centerfold" were big radio hits, but far from J. Geils best music. "Looking for Love" and "Whammer Jammer" are what the band is really about. They were a wild bar band. The Hammond blasting through Leslie cabs was deafening live.
"Freeze-Frame" (1982) was J. Geils Band 2nd biggest hit, peaking @ #4, immediately following the biggest record of their career, "Centerfold," which logged 6 weeks @ #1 ( first charted late 1981/ peaked in Feb. 1982). The band had been charting for 10 years before they had a huge success. Between 1971 - 1985, J. Geils Band charted 18 singles, with just the 2 mentioned hitting the Top 10.
The switch from guitar based to keyboard based is what broke the band up. Consider J. Geils is the guitar player. Listen to live version of Musta Got Lost from blow your face out. Peter Wolf does an awesome freestyle open.
As others have mentioned, this is 80’s J. Geils Band but they have some seriously awesome music from the 70’s. Homework, First I Look at the Purse, Musta Got Lost, Southside Shuffle and so many more. There is great late 70’s live concert footage you can find that shows just how great they were live, especially Peter Wolf, one of the best frontmen ever.
That guy you see playing a "small saxophone" is arguably one of the greatest harmonica players of all time, "Magic Dick and his Lickin' Stick." He was a huge part of their earlier, more bluesy music. They were an amazing live band and their live album Full House was incredible from the first to the last note. My favorites were Live Whammer Jammer, Looking for Love, Serves You Right to Suffer, and Hard Drivin Man, but every song on that album was so good.
What I love about you two the most............You actually feel music! Greatest music ever, late 60's to mid 80's! Amber, you make me smile and cry, depending on the song! Love y'all!
They rose to prominence on the backs of much more bluesy music, so they were beloved way before they put out this poppy stuff (which is good) - but their all time monster song is "Love Stinks".
The keyboardist name is Seth Justman who became the lead singer of the band after Peter Wolf tried his hand at a solo career with his only real hit "Lights Out" which was originally titled "Dancing In The Dark" but at the same time, Bruce Springsteen came out with a song under the same title at the same time The band with Justman as lead only had a few semi-hits with "Concealed Weapons " & "Fright Night" which was the theme for the movie under the same name
So, MTV came on the air in August of 1981 and I think my grandparents got cable shortly before this because I have a very vague (I mean, I was 3) memory of knowing about MTV and anticipating it. This song came out in 1982 and it along with their 1981 song “Centerfold,” and a song called “Fish Heads” by Barnes & Barnes (I loved it when I was little but don’t recommend-it’s another “Rock Lobster”) were the first videos I recall seeing on MTV. And as you can imagine, as a little kid, I thought the paint slinging everywhere was the best part! I think it became an indelible memory because of how novel it was-I remember standing directly in front of the TV to watch and my mom and grandparents pulling me back a little ways. I watch these videos now and can’t believe how OLD they look when I remember them being the newest, coolest thing. Edit: Jay, I’m pretty sure that’s an alto saxophone which is smaller than the more common tenor saxophone. But someone can correct me if I’m wrong-I studied strings back in the day, not woodwinds! My understanding of wind or brass instruments is minimal-like, I can usually identify the different pitched instruments (there are several types of sax with different pitches as well as flute, clarinet, etc) but I can’t tell ya much more!
This might just be one of the most jargon-heavy songs to ever sell a million records. If you're familiar with still photography, there's a bit of an insider bonus, but the song's good, even if you don't know a focal length from an f-stop.
Be sure to dive deep with the J. Geils Band - not just the top 40 hits. A suggested song would be , "Serves You Right to Suffer ( a John Lee Hooker song that they do exceedingly well). It is on the 1972 album, "Full House." Try it out!
Was so in love with this song and the video back in the day. Saw them in 1982 on their Freeze Frame tour. I still have the t shirt I bought at the concert!!
Musta Got Lost, Piss On The Wall, Love Stinks, Angel In Blue, I Do (official video), Just Can't Wait, and many more! O saw the Freeze Frame tour - it was my first "real" concert! It was the winter of '81/'82!! Great show!
I am 53 yrs old and I grew up with this music, thank you for bringing me back to my youth. I love that y'all (yes from the South) love good classic music. Keep doing what y'all are doing!!!!!!!! Love y'all.
Keyboard + sax + bass + drums (two sets) = Frankenstein by The Edgar Winter Group 1973 live video! Jay and Amber, you will love it! Jamel_aka_Jamal did a reaction video to this and then did a second one with his brothers so they could see it because he was so blown away with it.
Hey I'm 57 and I grew up with with these guys. This stuff was what they did to be current in the 80's. You have to listen to must have got lost. Then your gonna want to hear more. J your gonna thank me. Raputa da beauta let down your hair and let me climb up your ladder o
Watching you vibe to the music was the same thing we were doing back then. The music and the beat just set you to dancing and that's all we cared about. I hope you explore more of the early to mid 80's dance music. I miss it so much !!
This is a great song, however my favorite is: It Isn't Nothing but a House Party. Started a lot of parties back in the 70's and 80's with that song. There are a lot of other good songs on the album Bloodshot.
In my youth, (i was young once), i have been to many, many concerts and NOBODY put on a show like the J. Geils Band, they would engage the entire audience at times and you left the show feeling fully entertained.
I love you guys so much. You have made this channel so much fun. Your reactions are absolutely insightful. Trust me when I say that both of you would have been fantastic VJ's for MTV back in the early 80's with Martha Quinn and all the others. I always look forward to watching this channel. And you can thank your friend who got you to listen to AC/DC's Thunderstruck!
My first concert. My older sister and her best friend took myself and her younger sister to J. Geils in 1980 at Pine Knob. Without a doubt, one of my best childhood memories. Peter Wolf was such a great stage performer!!
J. Geils Band has some great songs. May I recommend "Musta Got Lost", the live version from the "Blow Your Face Out" album. The introduction story is so classic.
Our local band played this at a street dance on main when I was in junior high. The singer managed to hold that scream at the end. We could hardly believe it, lol. Best part.

Peter Wolf had a good solo song called "Come as You Are" it's worth a reaction.
This might just be one of the most jargon-heavy songs to ever sell a million records.
If you're familiar with still photography, there's a bit of an insider bonus, but the song's good, even if you don't know a focal length from an f-stop.
Some earlier J Geils is great as well, the Bloodshot Album is great from “Ain’t nothin but a house party” to the last “give it to me” 😎
Be sure to dive deep with the J. Geils Band - not just the top 40 hits. A suggested song would be , "Serves You Right to Suffer ( a John Lee Hooker song that they do exceedingly well). It is on the 1972 album, "Full House." Try it out!
Yup, yup
Was so in love with this song and the video back in the day. Saw them in 1982 on their Freeze Frame tour. I still have the t shirt I bought at the concert!!
Jay Geils lived in the town next to mine. He used to eat at a restaurant just down the street from my apartment, until he passed in 2017. RIP Jay.

"Love Stinks" is my fav by them!
It's in "The Wedding Singer" and is awesome as well as hilarious! :P
40 years ago, when a band would began this song, seats were sliding and people were getting up to dance. Total fun.
Oh yeah, if they haven't seen that yet they will love it!
This is one of my favorite 80's song. So catchy and fun to dance to. Great pick & reaction!
Hey I'm 57 and I grew up with with these guys. This stuff was what they did to be current in the 80's. You have to listen to must have got lost. Then your gonna want to hear more. J your gonna thank me. Raputa da beauta let down your hair and let me climb up your ladder o
They are WELL known for being a PARTY BAND , GREAT STUFF!
Peter Wolfe a great singer and performer. Give it to Me, I Do and Love Stinks are very very good 👍
Watching you vibe to the music was the same thing we were doing back then.
I had that album! The record itself was red!
Bloodshot, what a great album.
In my youth, (i was young once), i have been to many, many concerts and NOBODY put on a show like the J. Geils Band, they would engage the entire audience at times and you left the show feeling fully entertained.
As soon as the music hit, I could tell it was Freeze Frame, Love this song!!!
Love these guys, such party and beer music lol
I love you guys so much. You have made this channel so much fun. Your reactions are absolutely insightful. Trust me when I say that both of you would have been fantastic VJ's for MTV back in the early 80's with Martha Quinn and all the others. I always look forward to watching this channel. And you can thank your friend who got you to listen to AC/DC's Thunderstruck!
im telling you do there stuff from 1975 it will blow your mind they are the GREATEST PARTY BAND EVER don't miss out on them lol
Yes I flashed back to high school too!!! Great song what an awesome memory
My first concert. My older sister and her best friend took myself and her younger sister to J. Geils in 1980 at Pine Knob. Without a doubt, one of my best childhood memories. Peter Wolf was such a great stage performer!!
I discovered J Gail's in high school and went deep. Great band.
Another great song, another great reaction. Thanks guys!!!
J. Geils Band has some great songs. May I recommend "Musta Got Lost", the live version from the "Blow Your Face Out" album. The introduction story is so classic.
They were great live. Always came out for 4 or 5 encores every show!
One of the best bands I ever saw live.
This album was all over the charts when I first met my husband. Great memories 🌺✌️
Our local band played this at a street dance on main when I was in junior high. The singer managed to hold that scream at the end. We could hardly believe it, lol. Best part.
