Yeah I break line from time to time get cut off but I haven't had a knot come undone in years last time I did I was in a hurry and knew the knot was slipping young and dumb I know many knots improved clinch doesn't work for braid but I don't have any doubt in the improved clinch for mono or flouro I can tie it with my eyes closed I also use it in tree work
You are truly a greater fisherman that all those using the fisherman's knot. We are all just fortunate to be allowed to fish the same waters as a guy like yourself. I have never lost a fish due to a failed clinch knot.
my late father taught me the fishermans knot and i love it. it works great! never lost a fish! HOWEVER that middle knot you showed is much quicker to tie! Ill for sure be using that one from now on.

Good job!! My son enjoyed your video. I thought him the fisherman's knot when he was 5 now he's using the uni and Palomar thanks to you. He's ten now and since he took it upon himself to improve his fishing techniques. I showed him how to double uni and the Albright. Now I am just waiting for him to master that and then we gonna have fun with the Bimini please keep up the good work your helping kids and adults learn more about fishing and the skills it takes to become a better fisherman woman. Pleas do a video with the Bimini I learned it a long time ago and just learned a new way of doing it from this guy In A tackle shop in Grand Cayman amazing let's see how you do it. Thanks Capt Dax
Doug Durrum There is actually one really easy fly fishing knot that is strong and strong. I use 1.5-2.5 lb line that’s where my sportsmanship comes into play. Unless I’m bass fishing of course lol
So my 11yr old son and I just picked up fishng as a hobby. Honestly we did learn the fisherman's Knott first and I totally appreciate this video. I've been looking into other knots but when I view the picture of how to do them It can sometimes get confusing. So viewing your video is extremely helpful and will be trying one these out today on our trip. Thanks yo
Don’t sleep on that Orvis knot. Tried it today with great results. Easy to tie and slips less on my jigheads than a Fisherman’s Knot. Less weeds as stated in the video. I HAVE lost nice fish using a Fishmern’s knot. Ty for the good instructions.
I've been using the improved fisherman's knot for the last few years, it reduced the loss on knot breaks. However it's nice to see another perspective on other knots.
I've used the improved clinch my whole life. Just learned the Palomar this week. Recently I have had hard time with the fishermens knot and poking myself with the hook cinching it up. Going to practice those and get familiar with them and let you know. Thank you for the instructions.
I've just started fishing again and found out what the excitement was when I was a kid. However now it's becoming more of a challenge to catch my first bass and of course as you know the knot was not my friend. I lost what look to be a 2-3 pound bass that was almost to the dock when the knot gave away. So I can't tell you how excited I was to watch this tutorial and now have the chance to catch my first bass. Thank you! and keep up the good teaching!
I've been using the Palomar for several years due to the double pass thru the hook eye.. it has worked awesome for me and is amazing for braid/top water.
Tying the Palomar knot is much easier to just pass the line through and then pass it back through the other way. Instead of trying to double the line through a small eyelet.
I use several different knots. It depends on the situation. I have landed 100's of 30-50lb fish on 6lb line using a fisherman's knot. I've been fishing for for well over 50 years and I am not set in my ways. That being said, I don't think you should knock a knot that has probably caught more fish than all the others put together. You're obviously a pretty sharp young man, so I hope you take my humble comment to heart. Keep sharing what you know, but don't alienate anyone that might disagree with you or simply has a hard time learning new knots. It can be hard for old dogs to learn new tricks. 😎✌
I loved this video. The best video teaching knots for fisherman. Most people don't use big enough lines and hooks to see exactly how each step of the process is done. Thanks you taught me one more knot that I will be using in the rivers of Virginia and Tennessee.
One thing that I think should be mentioned is how strong a correctly tied snell can be, AND it is the ONLY knot to use when using an offset eye or 'snell hook'. Also one of the easiest knots in the world to tie. Im mainly a flathead catfish guy, particularly in rivers, and my most used knots are the Palomar and the Uni-knot, followed by the snell depending on the hook style I happen to be using. Im certainly no expert but I have watched many videos on different knot types and individual strength tests when using distinct knots. I also appreciated your humorous approach to a normally boring subject. Well done, Sir! 👍😁👍
listen here boy. I've been using the fishermans knot for over 25 years. (takes a drink of beer). i've caught more fish on it then you have seen in your whole life. wait a tic......My fishermans knot is the Palomar knot...... Carry on then.
T1NK gaming jb304dubv I swear by a knot that my dad created. I’m not even kidding he created his own knot and it is super strong. It’s not anything you have ever seen I guarantee it.
Just started fishing 3 months ago and fell in love. Now that Im checking out RUclips videos. I really enjoyed your tutorial style and you getting right to the point. This video is the first one I didn't get annoyed with or have to "fast forward"' lol. Great job, glad I found your channel.
I use the uni knot for just about everything. The only other knots I have a need for are the occasional loop & snell knot. Thanks for the great content. You do a great job explaining things. Keep up the good work
Great Video, I was unaware if the Orvis knot. I only use the clinch knot for 1 purpose and that is attaching a snelled circle hook back to a chain swivel. It creates a weak point so that I do not lose 8-12oz sinkers, swivels or rattles. It is much easier on the wallet and river to just lose the 1-2$ hook and not leave a half pound of lead on the bottom along with the other terminal tackle.
This was one of the easiest to follow tutorials on knot tying. On so many other channels you cant see what they are doing and/or they don't explain it in non-jargon terms. Great job! The improved clinch is still my go to, but I will definitely start working these in.
"UNI" !! ... as in universal. Does not jam any portion of the tag end against the hook eye. It can only get tighter. A variation on the hangman's knot. Have ya ever seen one of those pull loose ? The fisherman's (clinch and improved clinch) is a cruel prank played on anglers for decades. Ditch it today !! The best advice on knots I've seen since RUclips came along.
Thanks for this. Can’t wait to they these three. I’ve been using the Trilene knot for years and have found it to be stronger than the line itself in most cases. When my line snaps it’s usually above the knot, leaving the knot in tact. It can be difficult to pull off in the dark or with super small gear so I’m open to trying these simpler knots for special circumstances.
Palomar is my knot of choice. It is reliable and easy to tie on the water. Plus it is the only one I can remember. I was using the world’s fair knot a few years ago and I liked it even better, a bit more complicated to tie. I have since lost how to. I need to pick it back up again.
I started fishing when I was 8 or 9 years old... Had some mentoring for a couple years and then lost it... I'm now 46 years old and have been RE-learning on my own for the past 6 years (a LOT of math, I know).. what I would like to see is some SUPER BASIC stuff, like a 101 on how to get started ( basic knots, hooks for trout & other pan fish, and basic techniques) .. what works best ( ie: Powerbait, Inflated nightcrawlers, corn, etc..) ... Some of us missed a good minute of learning and would really like to catch up in our summer years... I like your style and think you have what it takes to get us there... Thanks for the videos brother and looking forward to more knowledge!!!
@@steventhehistorian Yep. I hate when people start their videos with "What is up guys" and the faux excitement. My knot of choice is the hangman's noose for the guy that made this video.
I teach a lot of kids how to fish and show parents how to rig their rods and I think I'm going to switch to the Orvis knot, just like he said, it's small and strong and very, very easy to tie. Thanks for the tutorial on the 3 knots.
Been using the Palomar since a very young age, never tied another knot for fishing! I typically now fish for Pike and Muskie with a 40 pound braided line and have yet to be broken off! It's really great for even big lures because you don't have to pull the tag end and waste line as it doesn't kink or damage like a monofilm. Not that it's an issue because I always have a leader of for those beastly teeth. Great video man hopefully this saves many people lost fish!

My dad swears by this knot, so no wonder I never learned anything different. Cheers for this video man, appreciate the new knowledge and hope it fares me well this season!
This past weekend I had my first "pigtail" knot fail with the ol' fisherman's knot and it was enough to get me to click on this video when it popped up. I think the straight up uni may come into play for me most times. Thanks
These three knots are easy to remember and highly functional. I like the Orvis knot best and use it for dry flys with my fly rod! I like that the tag end lays with the lure. Thanks for the great tips!
I was reading a lot of comments and I saw that like me, y'all like the Palomar knot. For those having trouble with getting a doubled up line through a small eye, I have your solution, because I do it all the time. All you have to do is put one end through and give yourself enough line to go back through again and you'll have your starting loop. No pinching the line, or fighting with trying to get it through the eye. I've tied that knot with 40lbs Power pro to tiny perch hooks. This is also a great knot for adding something to the line above the main end. For instance, you can tie the end of your line to a sinker, then easily go up and add a swivel or hook. The line will fail before the knot does. Hope this helps, and ohhh NEVER TIE THAT OLD FISHERMAN'S KNOT TO BRAIDED LINE! Trust Me!!!
I just came across your video and I totally agree with you about the fisherman's knot. I was taught how to tie this knot as a kid" and over the years I found that with continue use ; IE casting and pulling out snags, it would eventually give way. I use the uni knot now or the grinner knot" as it used to be known as. "and i don't have any problems now. Good video mate. 👍
I'm 53 and I have never used the fishermans knot. I use the improved Trilene knot it's real name for Braid because it will not slip and has the highest knot strength and also use the knots you're teaching here and the uni knot is how I join lines together good video. if you use the double loop version. I'm subscribing.
I started using the fisherman's knot since long before yo' Mama met yo' Daddy, boy. But yeah, I gave it up awhile back for the knots you talked about - plus the FG knot. But I will say, that the clinch knots were good with the older, softer braids & monofilaments. Then again, Boone's Farm was good when I was a kid. Only one knot? The Uni, very versatile and like you said - simple. BTW - points for the LandShark T.
@@carpenterdom1639 I can provide images of mutilated hooks and weights that were tied on with the improved clinch. If I get snagged I always end up cutting my line if I cant get it free.
I never had a problem either but lately I've seen it come undone with very soft or slippery fluorocarbon coated monofilament. It was really shocking to me. I have sort of a hobby of tying and testing knots that I got into when I was trying to find a substitute for an FG knot. So I definitely know how to tie the fisherman's knot and the improved version and it definitely can slip.
For braid, I would simply use the Fish-n-Fool knot, which is basically a Uni-knot, but the tag end goes through the eye of the hook twice. It was proven to be the strongest braid knot in Knot Wars.
My pap always used the second one, the Palomar knot, which I haven't seen done in years. With that being said he always used a swivel for the simple fact that he often used lures and as you said it's difficult with many cause they're big. Good video btw
then trilene knot which is minor change from the clinch or the Berkley braid (swindle's double shindo etc) all very similar to the improved clinch tied and when wetted correctly, perform better than the uni in mono and fluro.
I'm mixed handed and my Dad had a hell of a time teaching me any knot as a kid. He probably taught me how to tie a bowline on a bite 60 times while loading up the truck before I finally mastered it. That's a pretty simple knot. That said, the Palomar knot is the only fishing knot he was able to get me to remember and I can tie that sucker in the dark to this day. I love how it has 2 pieces of line through the eyelet and, yeah it's not as fast to tie as a Triline knot but I've tied it around some HUGE lures and set up multi stage rigging with it. It's all about order of operations with the Palomar knot. If you tie on the wrong thing first then you're screwed because you can't pass the entire rig through the loop any more. Still love it for its strength though!
I've used the clinch not forever. I also use others like the palomar for drop shot. I've never had a problem with breaking fish off. Most breakoffs happen because people dont retie after catching multiple fish or because of fraying. This dude just wanted to ruffle some feathers for views.
Dad used to use the clinch knot but im a uni knot man all the way and always use an orvis for lures and squid jigs or any jigs for that matter because of the exact reason you mentioned the tag faces the jig, cheers Aussie Aaron.
Weird, I was fishing today and kinda struggling with my knot tying. I thought to myself that I need to work on it as a skill. Now this video shows up on my feed. RUclips algorithm is reading minds now.
Whenever possible and reasonable, I use the palomar. Unfortunately, like many I was raised on the fisherman's knot so I usually use that when the palomar won't work.
Thank you for the insight and time to explain some different knots. I myself have been guilty of the same fisherman’s knot for years. I have been aware of these but never really applied them. I fish strip mine lakes and the Mississippi and Rock River, and am eager to try some of these out with different rigs and line. *Side Note-thanks for using a visible size line and hook for the video👍🏼
"Its not that your doing it wrong....but theres a better way". Dad taught my brother and i the fishermans knot like his dad tought him. Ive caught many fish using it and lost a few. For a few years now ive been using the Palomar and love the quick simplicity and strength of it.
Same here. Been fishing for 27yrs and havent lost a fish due to a clinch knot failing. I'd say ALL the lost fish from failed clinch knots are due to improperly set up and maintained gear, or human error.
I have used the same knot my whole life. I have had them fail, but it was because I cut the tag to short before properly tightening the knot. I will continue tying this knot for everything! I literally bent my hook 3/0 stainless circle hook out last week while having this knot tied on.
@Daniel Macdonald I was very hung up and had my drag as tight as I could. I target flatheads and big blues and run 65lb braid on the pole I was using. I really didn’t want to cut my rig off so I decided I would pull the lake bed up instead🤣

Palomar knot was the first knot I was able to tie consistently and have never had one break off a swivel or hook yet.
Trust Me!!!
Just started fishing in the UK again after too many years to mention ! Very helpful thanks.
Good Luck to you!
The palomar is the first knot I was taught as a kid. It is about the only knot I use. I have seen the fishermens knot fail to many times!!!
Most the time it fails bc it was done properly
I just came across your video and I totally agree with you about the fisherman's knot. I was taught how to tie this knot as a kid" and over the years I found that with continue use ; IE casting and pulling out snags, it would eventually give way. I use the uni knot now or the grinner knot" as it used to be known as. "and i don't have any problems now. Good video mate. 👍
Matt Webster thanks brother 🍻🤙🏼
Fake news everyone knows that using 3 dozen half hitch knots is the best
27 half hitches will never slip. So said my climbing and rigging instructor.
@@BestDARNComputers Must be true. You're alive to tell the tale.
@@Sakitsunebi haven't died yet. Not even once
@@BestDARNComputers But did the climbing and rigging instructor survive?
Three dozen seems excessive...two dozen should do the trick of getting you the greenhorn award lol
Who are you to tell the world what they can and can NOT do????????????????? Another legend in his own mind !
I’ll be fishing pawpaw’s knot til the day I die
wxsn a true hero
I'm 53 and I have never used the fishermans knot. I use the improved Trilene knot it's real name for Braid because it will not slip and has the highest knot strength and also use the knots you're teaching here and the uni knot is how I join lines together good video. if you use the double loop version. I'm subscribing.
Palomar was the first knot I was taught as a kid. I use it for everything.
that is smart. that is why we BOTH do it.
Since I seen your video sir. I stop fishermans knot.. Thanks you. So helpful.
Glad I could provide some information! Tight Lines my friend! 🍻

Thanks for showing the three knots. I’m going to watch the video again with hook and line in hand to learn all three.
I use the palomar knot for everything even something like my trout rigs.
I learned this knot very young, but using a figure eight knot instead of straight overhand. Never had a problem in over 20 years of fishing.
Love the "that's what she said" part lol. Oh and The knots were good too
Never lost a fish on a well tied improved clinch
Carson Moore denial can be a son of a bitch
@@carpenterdom1639 I can provide images of mutilated hooks and weights that were tied on with the improved clinch. If I get snagged I always end up cutting my line if I cant get it free.
I never had a problem either but lately I've seen it come undone with very soft or slippery fluorocarbon coated monofilament. It was really shocking to me. I have sort of a hobby of tying and testing knots that I got into when I was trying to find a substitute for an FG knot. So I definitely know how to tie the fisherman's knot and the improved version and it definitely can slip.
Really great step by step instructions. Thanks. Learned some new knots today!
For braid, I would simply use the Fish-n-Fool knot, which is basically a Uni-knot, but the tag end goes through the eye of the hook twice. It was proven to be the strongest braid knot in Knot Wars.
I started tying the Palomar knot about 15 years ago. I use it on my biggest lures. I just take the time because I love the knot.
It is the fastest knot....
And I'll CONTINUE to use it!
Never heard of a knot being “outdated”, interesting.
@ezmobz79 yes we are a advanced species
I've used the clinch not forever. I also use others like the palomar for drop shot. I've never had a problem with breaking fish off. Most breakoffs happen because people dont retie after catching multiple fish or because of fraying. This dude just wanted to ruffle some feathers for views.
@@spencerzumwalt8957 That's the feeling I've got as well. Sad when people do that.
It just did that to me as well. Right after I got done talking about it too.
Ive learned the uni knot before the clinch, always used the uni, its amazing, never failed on me
Used to use the blood knot but getting older and having my hands shake the polymar knot is a much better choice now at least for me!
I used the palomar today, works great. First time fishing in years and got a pretty good walleye. 👍🏻
The fishermen’s knot is strong
Actually it slips very easily with modern monofilaments. The improved clinch knot is better but it can also be pull out. More wraps helps
Good advice Ryan, thanks for the content
Whenever possible and reasonable, I use the palomar. Unfortunately, like many I was raised on the fisherman's knot so I usually use that when the palomar won't work.
You've made the best uni knot video I've found because you clearly show what to do and how to do it
Uni knot...always use it, and in different applications👍👍
Thank you for the insight and time to explain some different knots. I myself have been guilty of the same fisherman’s knot for years. I have been aware of these but never really applied them. I fish strip mine lakes and the Mississippi and Rock River, and am eager to try some of these out with different rigs and line. *Side Note-thanks for using a visible size line and hook for the video👍🏼
TheMcArthurJr thanks for the kinda words my friend! I hope you get on some good fish in the future 🤙🏼
Ive caught 60lb catfish on the fishermans knot
I've caught 7 foot tarpon on it. This is stupid.
I'm going to try the Orvis knot today. Thanks!
Similar to the Uni Knot in strength but easier and faster to tie with braid line... San Diego Knot (Braid) Uni Knot (Mono or Floro)
Exactly what Shane says above. Also the Uni knot can be used as a loop knot and a snell knot. Uni is the single most versatile knot hands down.
"Its not that your doing it wrong....but theres a better way". Dad taught my brother and i the fishermans knot like his dad tought him. Ive caught many fish using it and lost a few. For a few years now ive been using the Palomar and love the quick simplicity and strength of it.
I fish a lot and know many knots but will say I've never lost one fish due to an improved clinch failing
Daniel Macdonald same here
@@NigelRedding sounds like your drag was far too tight if you're bending out hooks imo
@Daniel Macdonald I was very hung up and had my drag as tight as I could. I target flatheads and big blues and run 65lb braid on the pole I was using. I really didn’t want to cut my rig off so I decided I would pull the lake bed up instead🤣
Very clear. Definitely saving this
It is because you only wrapped it 5 times. If you wrap it 10 or 12 times it will be much stronger
