"We don't have a place for one...." and then begins building a place for one. You and your wife are just absolute gems of human beings. 10/10 best pet humans.
I wish they wouldn't sell so many sulcata tortoise babies at reptile shows. They get huge and the majority of people will not have the space for them. Thank you for adopting him.
Well, hi there....You are the only one I know who builds stuff with a tie on. And nice shoes. And both survived without holes or screws in it or being covered in silicone. Colour me impressed, well done.
Are you trying to intimidate your competitors in the up coming build-off? Whatever the outcome I'm sure you'll be the only contestant who's built a giant open-top double-decker enclosure on wheels with an attached seating area. Big Daddy seems very happy about it too.
Imagine growing up having Clint as a dad- learning to love animals from a man as passionate and fun as him. not to mention learning to do projects like this from him. He's so loving and gentle to animals, i can imagine he's the sweetest dad. That childhood would be so fun!
Clint, I feel like you can appreciate an old maker joke. "how do you calculate the number of bar clamps you'll need for a project? Count how many you have and add two!"
Good pocket hole jointery, but it feels mildly unsettling to see only one fastener on the exterior framing joints/bracing. With substrate, it will weigh a fair bit, that extra rigidity from more than one fastener at those points would help deformation. I strongly suggest you use the Kreg wood plugs to seal the bottom holes with waterproof wood glue. Not super important with a relatively dry substrate but it's good form to keep crud out. That crud holds moisture against the pocket hole screw and increases the chance that the coating will fail and the faster head or shank will corrode.
one of my uncles wears Levi jeans, button downs and leather shoes for EVERYTHING. I have never seen him in a t-shirt, and rarely in a polo shirt. I think Clint has the same style.
It always makes me smile to see the dedication in people to go all out for their pets, and I'm the same way. I'm no carpenter. I'm more of a musician by trade, and a full time kennel attendant (best job ever working with animals). But when it comes to constructing bigger, better habitats for my own herps, I never disappoint!
Where did you get the roll of plastic sheeting! All i can find is the 8x4 sheets of fiberglass paneling but for years ive wanted something like the roll you have. Tip for more humid enclosures is the put a bead of silicone underneath your seams as well as on top.
For people that don't live in states/climates where outdoor living is capable, this type of build/enclosure is awesome. Both affordable & functional, plus it looks really cool & could be built to fit any room/area Indoors. Big Daddy is really going to enjoyed the new digs! Job well done ✅
this is a tough one imho; it is indeed very heartwarming to see the frankly amazing dedication they gave to this animal under the circumstances, but really its near impossible to give a creature as giant as an adult sulcata enough space to keep it indoors, so you can't really actively *recommend* doing this, unless they too are taking care of such a creature through no fault of their own, or taking it out of even worse conditions. This creature needs even at minimum a basically apartment sized enclosure, and not anything that would possibly fit in a normal room. I was reading the housing standards of both germany and UK, and tortoises are particularly demanding of space for their size (and this is a very big one), as in both, they require a *minimum* of 8 plastron lengths times 4 plastron lengths for the enclosure of the tortoise, which is something like 23 sq.m (250 sq.ft.) for an adult male sulcata w a typical plastron length of ~85cm! Which I think is pretty much impossible to near anyone, except by being able to keep it outside. Its just simply not an animal a person should intentionally get unless they have such outside space and conditions, or idk a truly gigantic house to fit such an enclosure, and I believe Clint has said as much as well in other vids.
I love this!! I just adopted a 19 year old 43 pound female Sulcata named Trixie!! she is soo cute and sweet I am designing her indoor enclosure right now I just finished up her 200 square foot outdoor enclosure! I wish I could post a photo here!!! she is so happy... her previous owners had her in a Rubbermaid tote!!!
Super helpful! We are going to attempt this build for out adult Sulcata. Where did you find the plastic sheets? Is there a brand on them? Thanks so much. 👍🏼
Hi Clint, You might want to consider either ditching the tie or tucking it into your shirt when you work with power tools. It's a safety thing and it will also keep it out of the sealant. I can't wait to see the finished project!
Feeding and interacting with Big Daddy was one of my favorite things here! That enclosure is so cool! It's so fun to watch him wander around and walk up to you hoping for food.
I love the horizontal opening so that he can look out. 👍😊 I understand that this is still a work in progress. Each piece looks very good indeed. But that 90 degree angle looks like it needs at least one, or ideally, two more joining pieces on the bottom of the frame. You could use a triangular piece under the far corner 2x4s. And a trapazoidal piece under the near corner ones. Your new jig should make it possible without having to turn the whole thing on it's side. Just ask a carpenter. Also, he's going to get too heavy for you to lift and what if you want to let him onto the floor or you need to take him to the vet? Can you make it possible to lift one end out? Then you could attach a ramp when you need to. Or put him onto a wheeled cart. I hope you have a wonderful time up at the Build Off!
I love your channels so, so much. We're in lockdown here in Sydney, Australia, and your new videos are such highlights in trying time. I hope you're keeping well and hopefully I'll be able to visit at some point!
Excellent video and a clever enclosure! We're currently trying to figure out what sort of space to make for our Sulcata in the house (he's getting too big for his table), so this video gave me plenty of ideas. Thank you! Speaking to your comments about getting better each time you build, any time I do any sort of woodworking I always tell myself, "If it was perfect, it wouldn't be mine." I'm always off by a fraction of an inch somewhere, but I make it work!
Clint if you plan on doing any more things like this, I HIGHLY recommend investing in an impact driver. It’ll drive your screws in so much faster and will be more secure when you finish.
I LOVE that regular sized daddy and that Big Daddy. This enclosure has been amazing for us at the Reptile Room! I love sitting on the bench, petting Big Daddy. It’s one of the first things we do when we get there. Good job, Clintyy!
I definitely wouldn't mind a regular habitat related video topic on this channel ^^ I think inspiring people with design ideas would be fantastic if you can/want to!
Happy tortoises are the best tortoises!!🐢 Well done, Clint. I have to say that this is the first time I’ve watched someone do construction in dress pants, shirt, shoes and a tie. And you stayed clean!! How?! 🤣😂
Shouldn't you have made a door and ramp at 1 end of the enclosure, so he can walk in and out him self when you want him to, so when he gets heavier you don't have to lift him every time in and out.
At 14:00, love the " here goes my sofa space." look. USA is truly full of gold. This enclosure if you build in cape town, will be like $300 labor and material included, maximum. I can get someone to build it with leftover shipping planks for $100, easy. $10000 u can build a 100sqm small holding structure for poor people to stay here. Must put some protection pads under the wheels for the wooden floor just my suggestion.
looks stinkin rad man. awesome you thought about that looking hole without him being able to put his head through because if he gets his head stuck in some place it can really hurt then because they will try to pull as hard a they can
Great job, but keep an eye out for the Sulcata trying to move right through the side of the enclosure because he can see through it. Often Sulcatas need that visual barrier to keep them in. As you know they are very strong and can easily go through almost anything,
Lookit that happy tort ^_^ nice ro see an indoor enclosure can indeed make them happy when done right. Nothing beats outdoors of course but thats becoming a rare commosity in our world. Beautiful build 💚
Sharing a tip I learned recently. If you are finding yourself stripping out bits (very common if using an impact driver, but regular drivers can do it, too), I recommend getting an impact resistance bit set. The bits are built stronger to handle more torque and will likely last a lot longer than standard ones that come with drills or boxes of screws. Hope that helps save a couple trips to the hardware store!
I love a good diy video. I've switched to those screw heads as well. No more stripped screws. I've started making enclosures just from sheet foam and "poor man's fiberglass". It's cheap, light and working really well. Wouldn't be ideal for a sulcata. You'd have to reinforce it or he'd do a Kool aid man impression, but it's great for most snakes and lizards.
Aww, Clint...that is really nice! I do have a suggestion: next time, add a couple finish holes or staples to hold the plastic down where the joints are, or use tape designed for shower pan installations. You can always use rubberized paint to aid in sealing those gaps, too, it is usually safe for aquarium use. Very cool upgrade, LOVE that drill! Congrats on a great build!
My adult redfoot is in an 8x4 for winter months and it seems small to me (he's also spoiled since I constantly upgrade his outdoor enclosure) I can't imagine a sulcata in an 8x4. I'm so glad you upgraded! I'm interested to see what your yellowfoot enclosure looks like. Possible yellowfoot build in the future?
Awesome build. I foresee the gap being an issue, in my experience with box turtles they’re really strong for their size and love getting stuck places, sulcata mileage may vary. Hopefully not an issue and it works as built, but if it does become an issue, strips of acrylic or plexiglass should do the trick. I’d go with 1/4” thick myself, I’d rather overbuild than go too thin and need to redo it. It can be cut with a skil or jigsaw, edges sanded (probably should be rounded or beveled for tort safety), drilled (countersinking would be a good idea to keep everything flush, that’s very easy, you can probably just use a bigger bit you already have) and screwed in. 1/4” Sheets aren’t exactly cheap, but the strips only need to be a little wider than the gap so you can screw them in. You could make several strips from one sheet. Again, hope it’s not an issue, but the fix would only be a few hundred bucks at worst.
Good call on the Irwin clamps never buy the cheap ones they wind up costing more in the long run. Also that bit that you're using for your screwdriver the six pointed one is called a torx.

im convinced that clint could work in a coalmine, on an oil-rig or build a street and walk through the fresh asphalt and still would come out with his leather shoes looking like they are freshly polished
I'm interested to see this finished. Are you going to stain the wood? How are you going to work the lights? You should think about adding leaves or even hay to the substrate. It's a lot less messy to have plant matter covering the sand and stuff doesn't get coated in the dirt like a powdered donut.
Great job on the enclosure Clint! I hereby grant you permission to upgrade your drill/driver to at least a DeWalt 20v big guy! You've graduated beyond Black and Decker!
Love the care you put into your animals, I do however think you should pay close attention to him sticking his head through the opening in the boards, might want to mesh that at some point so he doesnt have an accident. Huge fan
Hey, I just wanted to let you know, you and snake discovery have been such huge inspirations to me, and I am going to start my own reptile collection. I’m going to start with either a western hognose or a Bullsnake, and assuming I enjoy the experience, (I think I will) also on my list are a group of garters, a false water cobra, carpet python, rainbow boa, some sort of skink or gecko (probably both) and maybe a really big snake like a burm or a retake, and the list keeps growing the more of your videos I watch! Edit: also you probably shouldn’t be wearing a tie while you’re doing this. I know it’s just a drill, and you’ll probably be fine, but really for ANYTHING construction related you shouldn’t be wearing a tie.
funnily enough, thats almost exactly what i was planning to build for my Not Russian Russian Tortoise, wanting to spoil him and get him some girlfriends lol, he is currently in a 4x2, but want it to be bigger, i was just gonna make dirt deeper since they burrow and what you would do for a baby room id make a ramp up to a enclosed spot since Seymour really likes to climb
Trust me when I, and many others, say that bigger is ALWAYS better! Check out my outdoor pen for my buddy Steve-O and his lady harem. All the space and greens that they could eat. ruclips.net/video/vOWok-J52j0/видео.html
human pets are so funny. my 9 year old female pet human just noticed, and pointed out, that you are wearing the same shirt and tie in this video and in the blue tongue build video that you referenced concerning the substrate.
Creat enclosure..it might be worth treating the timbers against the wall. If there's humidity and low airflow there's a risk of condensation... It'd take a long time to rot so not a huge problem.
it looks awesome! I just did a big build for my snakes. I'm still waiting on an animal plastics enclosure to finish the whole project, but once that's done and everything is set up I'll share a photo on Patreon

Hopefully not an issue and it works as built, but if it does become an issue, strips of acrylic or plexiglass should do the trick. I’d go with 1/4” thick myself, I’d rather overbuild than go too thin and need to redo it. My neighbors used to have a horse enclosure. Now it’s a tortoise enclosure.
human pets are so funny. my 9 year old female pet human just noticed, and pointed out, that you are wearing the same shirt and tie in this video and in the blue tongue build video that you referenced concerning the substrate.
I HAD THE SAME THOUGHTS ABOUT HIS DRILLING MACHINE!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Creat enclosure..it might be worth treating the timbers against the wall. If there's humidity and low airflow there's a risk of condensation... It'd take a long time to rot so not a huge problem.
Love it! Awesome job Clint
Love it! Can't wait to see it completely done!
it looks awesome! I just did a big build for my snakes. I'm still waiting on an animal plastics enclosure to finish the whole project, but once that's done and everything is set up I'll share a photo on Patreon
A metal strip used for doorway thresholds would work well to seam that junction between the two floors.
I don’t have any reptiles, but I always love your channel!
I just love Big Daddy!
Awesome enclosure ! Impressive building wearing tie and dress clothes... haha
Thanks for the video
Could you share the link where you got those plastic rolls for Big Daddy's enclosure from?
Ingenious use of space
