    Please view in 4K. Sorry for the shaky scenes with the falcon but it is very hard to film so far away in the sky with such tiny actors. On full ZOOM and with the camera on my face (LCD isn't usable outdoors) I also have to turn around as they fly right above my head. Sometimes I even have to stop breathing to reduce the camera shake. I doubt there is a good tripod for filming action on the sky far away but if you have some tips, please let me know.
    Chapters:
    00:18 - Double hawk attack
    00:42 - Hawk attacks almost entering the pigeon loft
    02:43 - Falcon attacking pigeons at ground level
    06:40 - The "falcon hug"
    07:50 - The hawk being harassed by crows before and after the attack
    08:40 - The falcon show very high up in the sky in his kingdom splitting the flock continuously; very hard to film being so far away with such tiny actors, on full zoom and no tripod
    10:13 - 3 hawks chasing a pigeon
    11:19 - See how the best pigeons stay united as a tight flock and how the weak ones have a hard time staying synchronized, making it easier for the hawk to pick one to chase
    12:50 - Long sky chase #1: falcon vs pigeon
    14:08 - Long sky chase #2: falcon vs pigeon
    16:15 - Hungry hawk trying a longer chase, like the falcon
    17:47 - Sneaky falcon pretends to leave, turns around and accelerates at full speed into the pigeon flock

    Another amazing video. 👏 My favorite shots are the long falcon chases. It blows my mind how the lowly pigeon is able to evade a supreme aerial predators like a Peregrine Falcon and Goshawk.

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  2 года назад +3

      My favorite are also the long chases. Unfortunately I missed many sensational ones because of the video gear or simply because I need to stop filming to save pigeons that get back to the loft after escaping the falcon - the hawk tries to grab them right above the loft, very annoying.

  • @bradmitchell3765
    @bradmitchell3765 2 года назад +3

    Again I'm impressed. First off I love an open loft with the birds on the ground eating all the grass and other stuff they can, then your flock urgently blows off with a raptor in the air bent on a meal. Good pigeons are bred but they are also made by their environment which includes avian predators. Years ago a fancier sold me 5 Meulemans which almost danced around the goshawks and the occasional prairie falcon that gave chase. So I got some more from another fancier, all of them ended up as hawk food. The first fancier was a breeder and racer the other simply let the pigeons breed. Anyway I gave a couple of the good youngsters to a friend, they escaped from 40 miles and were home that evening even though they'd never seen the inside of a training basket. Keep up the great videos, they make my day!

    I have also often seen attacks by peregrine falcons and hawks on pigeons. When hunting, there is a crucial moment when the bird of prey has to decide on a victim. These are often pigeons that have abnormalities that are not recognizable to us humans, which can sometimes lead to a successful hunt for the bird of prey. In the first phase of the hunt, the falcon or hawk usually first tests the fitness of the entire flock. This fitness test shows who is being hunted.

    Super tare filmarea. Se vede ca la un moment dat soimul ( daca nu ma insel ) prinde un porumbel. Si vad acuma ca si la minutul 17 si un pic uliul prinde altul. Erau mai tineri fara experienta ? Ai reusit sa salvezi vre-unul ?

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  2 года назад +3

      Ambii au fost luati de soim. Numai pui tardivi a luat pana acum, am si vreo 20 de maturi in stol. Nu am cum sa salvez de la soim ca sunt foarte departe si ii cara mult. De la uliu as putea dar am de alergat foarte mult si de obicei tot nu il ajung, si daca se baga in padure, adio. Am salvat vreo 2-3 care s-au ascuns prin tufisuri sau copaci la vecini in loc sa zboare, si dupa ce am plecat uliul s-a intors sa termine lucrarea. In general sunt pasari cu probleme cei luati. Cei care zboara stol pana la final indiferent cate atacuri sunt, sunt cei mai buni.

    • @sergiuvescan9662
      @sergiuvescan9662 2 года назад

      @@Pigeonmaniacom Da din pacate tardivii nu prea fac fata uneori nici uliului. Saptamana trecuta, uliul a prins sub ochii mei un voiajor dintr un stol cam de 15 bucati ai unui vecin ( pe ultimul din stol ). Trebuie avuta grija ca si uliul poate lua pentru ca e foarte smecher, de multe ori vine odihnit ca racheta cu viteza mare pe cand deja porumbeii au deja ceva timp de zbor si deja sunt obositi si atunci de multe ori reuseste sa prinda.

    Goshawks use stealth & surprise so when I see them chasing racing pigeons in the open I think they are doing it more for there own enjoyment -
    testing the pigeons for fitness & trying to pick out a weak bird.
    Falcons are more adapted for open air hunting with there different body shape.

    We live in the Ozarks and a few resident hawks nest here. However many more migrate here to spend the winter. and they prefer to attack poultry. We have seen them waiting in the trees for us to let the chickens out. Just across the Highway about a 1/8 mile there is a free range egg chicken house. About 6000 birds. The guy told me when they removed the old layed out flock that they where about 1000 chicken's short! When I was a kid in the 50,s and 60's every farm had chickens and every barn had some feral pigeons. And every one shot every hawk that they seen. Owls where encouraged. They hunt mostly at night when poultry is fastened up and rats and mice are on the prowl. We see very few feral pigeons in barns and under bridges now.

      For me the hawks are much more dangerous and annoying because they try to enter the loft and attack at the loft nonstop. Two days ago I almost lost the entire flock, they almost remained in flight for the night, a hawk would attack everytime they tried to get down to the loft. It was getting dark and it kept attacking. After about 3 hours of flying, I was able to get them down (while they were entering the loft the hawk was coming again, as announced by the magpies).

      Юр, в каком месте? Здесь желторотые ястреба, еще даже не половозрелые, а разбивают стаю почтарей как два пальца об асфальт. А если бы еще мамку с папкой да на ежедневные атаки, и после зимы стая очень бы поредела своим составом.

      @@Pigeonmaniacom So the video is not a hawk, but children. In their development, they are approximately equal to your late pigeons born after August. These hawks haven't even reached puberty yet. I would like to see the daily attacks of parents in an adult hawkish coloring. Daily. It would be a massacre. In despair, the falcon just flew away, because it would be difficult for him to compete there. And about your hawks, pay attention, you help the pigeons to fall into the attic, you frighten the hawk. Pigeons should not fall into the attic, this is already a deviation and a manifestation of weakness, and if it were not for you, these young hawks would have caught some of the surviving pigeons right on the roof of the attic

    Your peregrine falcon is hunting aggressively. I have never seen such attacks on my dovecote. And Russian pigeon breeders are filming a peregrine falcon attack, complete nonsense compared to your peregrine falcon. But your hawks, as if on the handbrake, stop attacks too quickly, especially in pursuit of racing pigeons, which do not differ in sharp maneuvers, they are easier to chase than wild birds (forest pigeons, jackdaws), but hawks give up. ... too fast ... Let's see what happens next, these first year hawks are very good and already doing well, I think they will gain experience over the winter.

      I know what you mean with the hawks giving up early. They don't give up early with sick or fat untrained pigeons, they know after a short chase if it is worth the effort to continue. I've seen much longer chases but couldn't film because they involved a lot of flying between houses.

      @@Pigeonmaniacom Yes, as a teenager, reading Soviet literature, I knew about the theory that a predator catches weak, sick and inferior victims. But when I faced the migration of the goshawk in 1990-2000, I saw that the hawk can also hunt strong, healthy prey. His aggression depends on the number of his victims. And when this number falls, the hawk gives more energy to catch a healthy prey. Yes, the average attack lasts about 30-40 seconds, but sometimes the hawk drives the victim for more than 1 minute, from 1 to 3 kilometers.

      @@jonijum8916 привет. Думаю уйдет на корм штук десять не более. У меня зимует самчишка, довольно сообразительный. Хитрит. Бабушки прикормтли на окнах прямо у леса сиварей и он их там сквозь березы и сосны гоняет, в своей стихии. И он ещё куда то ходит на охоту потому как не вижу чтобы долбил после промоха. По этому если почту вовсе не закрывать, не давать им зайти, то он их на посадке может даже с половину выбьет за зиму, и какая то часть потеряется. Если как на видео выпустил и загнал, выживут конечно больше.
