  • Often people want to throw their wool pads in the washing machine to clean them, however that is not recommended. If you wash wool pads in the washing machine they become more compact. We recommend using a spur tool while spinning the pad on your rotary tool to get the residue off.
    The same is recommended for the foam pad but instead of a spur tool you’ll want to use wire nylon brush.

    Cats claw, wide spade screw driver, SS curry comb, shedding blade... Works on wool pads just fine. Been using them for years. Personal favorite is a small blade cats claw. It's quick and simple, fits in your pocket.
    And you don't use aluminum anything on your wool pads. You pointed out why. Anymore than you polish an aluminum wheel then use the same pad to buff out paint with it.
    The grey it leaves behind will transfer in to the polishing compound, and depending on the finish you're buffing out, into the finish. Nothing like adding a tiny hint of grey to your pearly white paint, or clear coat, gel coat or otherwise.
    Cheers...

    Should I worry about the black residue from the aluminum spurs?

  • @Danfortman

    When I use the spur cleaning tool on a wool pad; it turns the pad black. It dirties the pad. Sort of what's seen near the center portion in the video. But for me much worse and all over the pad from the spur tool. Washing the pads gets the caked on stuff out just as well. Making using the spur useless. Running the blacken wool pad over my hand makes my hand dirty from the pad and using the spur on it. Is that normal? Am I supposed to conditon the spur to remove all the blackened mess that gets on the wool pad?

    • @wazup3333
      @wazup3333 4 года назад +1

      exactly what happens to me, all these videos seem stupid, when you are using compound it makes the pad wet. when you use the spur tool it turns black by transfering the metal on the spur to the pad which then you have dirty residue on the pad that you are putting back on the car/boat which makes it impossible to compound...

      @@3DCarCare when you use a spur tool the pad turns the metallic color from the pad. Then when you compound gelcoat that black/aluminum from the spur transfers to the gelcoat leaving a gross black film.

    They way you clean the foam pad is quite agressive. Do this a couple of times and the foam structure gets destroyed. And it is always better to have a few pads of the same type. So you can clean the used pad with soap and water and let it dry while you work with the other pads. This way your foam pads will last much longer.

    • @3DCarCare

      Wow, ok thanks for the pointers.

      Wow, what an intelligent answer! No need for sarcasm dude. This advice was meant to be for other viewers. You should just point out that your kind of cleaning foam pads is more for business detailers and nothing DIY users should do. Obviously you are some kind of professional detailer and you are also selling your own products. Therefore I think you dont care how long your pads last and maybe that you dont want your customers pads to last long as well so you can sell more...

    • @3DCarCare
      @3DCarCare  6 лет назад +8

      Sorry for any miscommunication. The intention of the comment was not meant to be sarcastic toward your comment. You DO have some good pointers in your comments. When the foam pads get real dirty we do wash them in a clothes washing machine. This brush off method is only meant to do a quick clean, and get you back to work fast. We do care about pad life, and the main thing that we find destroys the pad, is when the RPM of the polisher is set higher than necessary and also when user pushes the pad even after it is warm. Like you say, having many pads helps at that time. A hot pad will not last long, it will stretch out and pull apart.
