I have one general rule when it comes to grading musicians: If they’re connected to Chuck in any way, they’re gonna be one of the best at whatever it is they do. Richard is NO exception.
I remember I was in shock when I saw him on the Howard Stern show because I knew him through Death. The Sound of Perseverance drumming is incredible, a great successor to Gene Hoglan.
I love Richard's distinctive drumming, incorporating worldwide cultural drum styles. Establishing this into the world of Heavy Metal is very refreshing! Keep playing Richard, you are incredible dude!
OK....I am officially impressed. I know Richard from Howard Stern and heard he was a drummer but I had no idea he is this good. Richard, you are one talented guy!
Richard, as a drummer myself it would be really cool to have an interview of you going through how you created the drum parts for the bands you contributed to over the years. Please be sure to include ICED EARTH's "Horror Show" too because the drumming you do on that album is so incredibly distinctive and original but never sounds gimmickey or takes away from the song itself and I think that's your greatest talent as a drummer because it shows me that you could do anything to complement the rythm and yet you choose the best possible choice for the arangment for each song. Fucking 10 out of 10. When you listened to Mickey Dee's playing on "Them" and that gave you that mind-blown feeling is exactly the feeling you gave me when I heard "Horror Show" over a decade ago. You fucking rule. BEST ALL-AROUND DRUMMER IN THE WORLD.
he also played on iced earth's "horror show," the double bass on 'wolf' is really great. got to meet him back in 2001 and he was really cool, he along with the rest of the band had no problems hangin' with the fans for hours.
@wladdaimpala88 When a fast guitar solo is played the feeling is in the scales and chord progression. The focus for feel becomes much less vibrato and other related technical expressions. Same with drums, when you play fast the feel isn't in the accents and the ghost notes, but more in the time signatures, patterns etc. Even disregarding that listen to "A moment of clarity" or "Bite the Pain" by Death. Those intro's are full of feel, and that feel gets transferred to power throughout the song.
@falconer6439 Part of it is that Sean Reinert doesn't aim to make his playing in songs as technical as he can, he just tries to improve the music as much as he can. He really is just trying to make the music as good as it can possibly be, not prove how skilled he is with a kit. And some part of that love for the music is transferred over to the listener when he plays. You'll see the same thing with many jazz musicians; they know what they're doing, and truly devote themselves to their roles.
not very often the toms get mixed to to the same volume as the bass drum, and above everything else. the guy is using probably the longest, thickest sticks i've seen. solid solo.
@shornby haha, don't forget that this is the guy, when sal governale asked him to brush his teeth, replied: "ooh yea almost forgot!" (just throws in a tic tac) seriously though, he is so good. good enough for an elite band, though he loves his metal. it's amazing what muscle memory is capable of.
Man, you shouldn't be so harsh on Christy! I know he sometimes complicates too much, which is not so common with other Death albums, but don't you think that the whole band agreed on this kind of change?!? The SoP is different, but it is still a masterpiece and Crhisty fits perfectly for the job!
To those who believe his solo abilities aren't that great, please reproduce this using the exact same accenting, dynamics and control you see here. You might learn that it's not as easy as he makes it look. There's a lot more to drumming than beating the shit out of the drums, as many drummers of today seem to do.
@crycrow82 Why not? They're the most successful and popular metal band in the world, as well as arguably the most influential since Black Sabbath. I would go as far as to say they're the greatest metal band ever. Nothing they do will ever diminish the legacy of their first few albums.
Richard is the shit. He's a fuckin' great drummer and he does great work for the Stern show. The man's alright in my book, that is, when he's not crossing piss streams with Sal in a single stall in the restroom.
I have one general rule when it comes to grading musicians: If they’re connected to Chuck in any way, they’re gonna be one of the best at whatever it is they do. Richard is NO exception.
And the same rule applies to The Mars Volta
Richard's my faaaavorite drummer.
...and John Bonham's my favourite drummer and Ringo Starr is also my favourite and...
That kind of drumming takes practice, practice, practice. And intelligence. Just incredible.
FUCKING SICK. Your job in Death's "The Sound Of Perseverance" never fails to blow my mind, man.
Martín González Devia Yep. This guy is one of the best drummers on the planet. I wish him all the luck. It would be cool to see him in primus.

3.great set up/practical live setup.

I remember I was in shock when I saw him on the Howard Stern show because I knew him through Death. The Sound of Perseverance drumming is incredible, a great successor to Gene Hoglan.

The use of dyanmics and accents are well done here. Love the feel and the groove it has.. most of that is lost within drum solos I think

I love that his so unique
@DrumminD21311 most drum solos are either snare or hi hat bases and revolve around those.
we done got in to that cheesecake...
Richard Christy might be one of the best progressive metal drummers out there, he's wat too underrated and needs to be respected and worshiped xD
Richard is one of the most musical drummers I've heard listen to human.
Human was Sean Reinert, who is also one of my favorite drummers. Richard did drums for The Sound of Perseverance.
Sorry Sean is great on Human and The Sound of Perseverance is killer to with Richard.
2banjbob Then gotta give credit to Hoglan for Individual thought Patterns and Symbolic
amazing.

Amazing. I mean, this sounds almost like jazz-fusion/funk. Impeccable technique!
"Slow" is the man!! I love RC
Richard, how do you go about tuning your snare? Your snare drum sound on TSOP is one of my all time favs.
My friend Hugh Jasole introduced me to Dick Christy's drumming
Very snare-based. It's like a snare solo with some other stuff thrown in. I like it.
@jazar

yes - very nice. Studio work after Stern leaves?
To those who believe his solo abilities aren't that great, please reproduce this using the exact same accenting, dynamics and control you see here. Richard used to be the best. He still is I say!
1 year later he won the get Johns job contest and joined the Howard Stern show and hes still there now ,great drummer and a hell of a funny guy

@falconer6439 That's how I'd describe it, anyway. Keep in mind that I know almost nothing about music; I barely know what a time signature is.
Best drummer ever.
Браво!!! Ты мой кумир!
Best drummer alive.

Outstanding. But now he sniffs Sals taint.
If you knew every deep dark secret of every musician/celebrity you like your head would probably explode. stfu
As a ginger, he of course didn't need to sell his soul to be this fucking amazing!
