Having a super short bright room: it just makes things sound more real! Reversing L & R on the main room verb. Creating pads from guitars or keys by feeding them into a Valhalla Shimmer.
There's a free tape saturation plugin called FerricTDS (from Varienty of Sound). Much like compressing vocals to bring out room ambience, this is ace for giving a snare more length or ring. I smash the living daylights out of the Ferric TDS and feed in a smidge of it under the clean track. It's nasty, and beautiful.
I had settled into using reverbs on my rap vocal that have long pre-delay times set to the rythm of the track. But I like the combination of the delay into reverb you have going here. It definitely helps to bring that vocal forward! Thanks for the idea.
I learned good stuff on your website, so I'm happy to find out you have a RUclips channel. There are a lot of sound related tutorials nowadays, but imo very few people teach useful stuff. I think you are one of the best audio instructors because you're not just showing plugins, but you explain the concept behind.
Hello, Matthew! Thanks for videos. I would like to know what is this box on your table with big green knob? I saw this device from many mix engineers on youtube
Great tutorial, I would of really liked it if you would of spoke about the other plugins in your aux bus that are affecting this sound and why your incorporating them. I see Decimort 2 and Pro-Q3 in this chain but no mention in the video.
I didn't talk about those because I didn't feel they were central to the idea, and too specific to this record in particular. In regards to Pro-Q3, sometimes a reverb just sits up too much even when it's at the right level. Cutting additional highs and lows can sit it back down. And sometimes reverbs will ring, so notching out the ring can be necessary. Decimort was more of a stylistic thing. I wanted to get a bit of that "ASR-10" onboard reverb type of color and Decimort is the closest thing I have to that.
I've never used Smack Attack, but I reckon with enough tweaking any reliable transient designer can work. Multiband transient designing certainly helps though.
@@WeissAdvice would u EVER put a transient shaper on a vocal like this. ruclips.net/video/4y_RXYKaYKs/видео.html. Love your work. Training my 👂🏾 so i can actually hear what a track needs instead of the norm routine
Me personally. I use reverb and delay but I use to little it's barely noticeable. I prefer my vocals to be right in your face not a big fan of hearing all the reverb and delay.
Nice gems...hey why don't you show us the hack for those kinda big smooth lush reverbs on many modern vocals...i hear it alot in RnB trap and reggae dancehall.vocals
there isn't a right or wrong here. You can do both. You can do either. You can do neither. Can be a lot; can be a little. Figure out what you like and make that part of your style.
What's your favorite reverb technique here? The slap delay, the non-linear reverb, or the delay fed into a reverb? Or completely dry?
the slap delay because it provides some depth but not washing too much....

Each technique was good 😎👌🏾

You making your own channel was the best thing for the audio community this year.
Thank you! That means a lot to me.
MY GOD I found you years ago and bought some courses didn't know you made your own channel so glad I found it!!!!!

Thank you David, I appreciate that!
knocking it out of the park as usual matt. love these techniques
Thanks Julien!
Thanks for the tips Weiss
Thank you BIZI!
Definitely the best content on RUclips!
Thank you!
Yes the 348 ms delay is approximately 1/8th note(352.9 ms) . Awesome timing by ear.
Worked out that way I guess - but even if it hadn't, what matters is it feels right!
Also - don't forget to follow @Mega_Ran on IG. That's the rapper in this vid. He's fun, funny, a little nerdy, but then suddenly he's putting bars.

I love your content! Love the outro! It catches the essence of mixing
Thank you!
This is a fantastically useable technique.
Yezzir! Thanks 2-Ton
Great info yet again Matt, as always sharing the knowledge and dropping gems.
Thanks Rek!
This was a great tutorial, you didn't hold back on the information. I can't wait to give these techniques a go.
Thanks Strada!
I'm also a fan of painting the back walls
Right on!
The slaps really slap... great tips
Yea... I'm tempted to go back to the slap during the revision pass. I liked it more after re-watching the video.
Dope Tips.... very helpful...It would be Nice to see a video on how you do effects on Afrobeat vocals
That's a good idea. I've got some great Afrobeat cuts I could use.
ALWAYS GREAT! ALWAYS LEARNING SOMETHING NEW TO TRY! THANK YOU!
Thanks Cleon!
Interesting topic. Bravo! 💥💥💥💯💯💯
I 9 times out 10 mix my vocals only with slap back delay no reverd.
Peace, From Gabon 🇬🇦!

A lot of the time just a subtle slap is all that's needed! 100%%

Hey mate great vid! What is the vocal chain you have on this? Sounds really nice!
Retro-Color RC20 for vibe, Fabfilter DS, Hoser EQ, Ren EQ.
@@WeissAdvice Nice one! Would love a more in-depth view of this kind of approach. Sounds great!
Great Tips Matt!!!
Thanks Sebastian!
coincidentally I have been mixing my rap song and messing up with plate, room and other wide reverbs on my vocals and then i got this 😊
you'll notice my pan positions are also pulled in a little. With Hip Hop, tight is right! (usually)
@@WeissAdvice thanks bro

Thanks Keith!
good advice bro
Thanks! Great video!!
Thanks Pico!
Are there any IRS of studio rooms specifically for vocals? Better yet rap vocals which are generally smaller.
Nice 👍🏾 im still getting downpacked The two track trick with shaping the transients. Is smack attack a useable tool for that effect?
I've never used Smack Attack, but I reckon with enough tweaking any reliable transient designer can work. Multiband transient designing certainly helps though.

I always feel slaps & delays over reverb on rap tracks. Thanks for sharing Matt, always great information. =)
Even with reverbs, sometimes a short reverb with a very long pre delay sounds great.... because it kinda sounds like a delay lol
@@WeissAdvice Yes, good old pre delay. Going to have a reverb day & try some things out, I feel I've flat out been avoiding it lately. =)
Me personally. I use reverb and delay but I use to little it's barely noticeable. I prefer my vocals to be right in your face not a big fan of hearing all the reverb and delay.
I think for a lot (maybe even most) rap vocals - no reverb at all, or just enough to provide "dimension" is best. But... depends.
Nice gems...hey why don't you show us the hack for those kinda big smooth lush reverbs on many modern vocals...i hear it alot in RnB trap and reggae dancehall.vocals
I can certainly do some more vocal reverb content. There's a lot of different ways to do it - and I'd be happy to show mine!
Is the HVerb the delay is feeding into a room reverb or a plate?
Sometimes I put a wide delay with 0ms and 0 feedback and LoFi to taste, just to add a bit of width.
Slate Repeater is great for that.
@@WeissAdvice once I got Comeback Kid from Baby Audio, I find it hard to use anything else.
Nice content 👍🏾. What made you use pre fader instead of post on the send?
Nice catch! I like to start with my sends pre-fader so that I can solo the return. I will switch to post if there's a lot of vocal rides.
its really rare to hear a heater tune in a tutorial. i need to locate this artist and hit follow on a streaming account cause it slaps
Mega Ran. Album is "Live 95" - it's out, been performing pretty decent on Billboard.
should i choose reverb or delay for vocals and don't put both on vocals ?
there isn't a right or wrong here. You can do both. You can do either. You can do neither. Can be a lot; can be a little. Figure out what you like and make that part of your style.
1) Is that a hall reverb in waves h reverb?
2) can we use a plate reverb too as a second verb
I would describe it as a "hall", yeah. A plate can work as well. Just different textures.
many thanks, but why you slowed down the video ??
I just played it, seemed to playback at normal speed for me.
what song was that like damn bro
The song is called "Craig Hodges" off the album "Live 95" by Mega Ran. I believe the album drops on Oct 26th (or around then).
HIGH 5.
Thanks Maat!
i dnt think a lot of your Pro Audio Files subs know you have your own channel
