  • I use this workshop to build my high performance hunting / camping / survival knives: store.goughcustom.com/
    I had a number of people request that I do a video tour of the workshop. I had some spare time the other day while waiting for the handle glue-ups on a batch of knives to cure so I thought I would show you guys around!
    This video shows how I have the whole workshop laid out, and also covers the major tools in the workshop. If you have any questions at all about the tools please feel free to ask in the comments!
    Next year the shop is going to end up looking quite different as I start bringing in CNC machinery to help me get more knives out to you guys!
    -Aaron
    My grinder is a Beaumont Metal Works KMG Grinder (variable speed): www.beaumontmetalworks.com/sho...
    The tumbler is from C&M Topline: www.candmtopline.com/finishing...
    The kiln is an Evenheat KH418 with the Rampmaster control: usaknifemaker.com/heat-treat-o...
    The milling machine is a King Canada KC20VS, but there are other places where you can get that same machine less expensively. Grizzly stocks it as the G0704. The lathe is a 10x22" and is also available from Grizzly. The compound slide on that lathe is not terribly rigid, and is a serious weak point in an otherwise reasonably nice lathe. Replacing the compound with a solid block of steel is a good solution.
    My respirator is a North 5400 and I LOVE it: amzn.to/1vtjbzp
    The knife I'm carrying this time is a Spyderco Manix 2 DLC: amzn.to/1zWG5U5
    This video was shot using the Panasonic Lumix G6: amzn.to/1tlA4kz

    I've been thinking about making knives for a little while after spending a little over 10 years trying to figure out what the hell i'm supposed to do with my life and after watching many videos on RUclips, i found your videos when i was trying to learn about files and i was flabbergasted when i found your video on the arctic custom knives. You really inspired me 100 miles further than any other knife makers i watched on RUclips. I have no doubt your knives sell for a hefty price and they are worth every penny.

    Beautiful Shop! Those wall mirrors are awesome, a great way to keep the claustrophobia away especially with a long narrow shop!
    You would miss them if they were gone! Wood floors deaden sound and are soft on the feet, the high ceilings allow more air in the area and better particle dispersal. I've been to many shops that are huge and very commercial in design only to leave the owner reminiscing about his old shop. 😊 Thanks for the tour!!!

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад

      Yeah I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm just not sure how I can keep the floors and also have a big and really have CNC mill in there... Interesting point about the bigger shop owners reminiscing about their smaller shops!

    • @sapperlott
      @sapperlott 9 лет назад

      Gough Custom
      Don't know if this would work but maybe you could try to evenly distribute the weight of the mill by placing it on a large metal plate? If it doesn't work you at least have a shallow rectangular indent in the floor instead of the exact footprint of the machine ;)
      Or just take out the floor where the mill is standing and leave it everywhere else.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад

      sapperlott The second option is fine with me and likely what I would do... The real problem is when the machine is getting moved in! They use rollers or these little wheeled trucks called 'machine skates' to move the machines, the rollers would likely be ok, but I think the machine skates would just sink right into the floor!

    very nice shop tour, i am an aspiring knife maker/carpenter/luthier myself and wish that i can own a workshop like this one day, also i like how clean and neat it is. a lot of other shops i've seen look very cluttered and disorganized (and sometimes just plain dirty) and to each his own, but i prefer your clean setup! it's people like you who show people like me whats really floating around in the realm of possibility, thank you.

    I have a great respect not only for You and your Knives but, your video post as well you have helped me step up my hobby to a full on craft. Looking back at where I started from with simple file knives to the different types of steel and and kraft materials provided by knife supply websites you and others recommend through your vids have helped me accomplish true art that I have sold to others that buy my recurve bows and fishing rods aswell. All I really wanted to say is your talents have inspired others to try something new and diffrent and in the process found a new talent of their own. Keep up your good works and videos we love to watch!

    Aaron, great shop tour! I must have dropped the work rest bolts from my KMG into the water bucket about 6 times before realizing I could put loctite on them! Useful when grinding without the work rest.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад

      Thanks mate! Glad you liked it! I agree that the wooden floors are kinda nice. If I end up getting a big CNC machine they may have to go though unfortunately as they probably won't support the weight (there's nice concrete underneath)...

    • @FoolishDoug
      @FoolishDoug 9 лет назад

      Gough Custom It can, but to prevent serious damage to the wood floor you'll have to put down a plate over top to distribute the weight over it. You'll still probably have to drill holes to secure the CNC's floor anchors if it will require any. Worst it will do to the wood floor without the plate is cause dimples and ruts from the weight and vibrations.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад +1

      FoolishDoug The flooring is just crappy laminate, so it might actually be easiest to remove it where the machine is going to go, then leave it everywhere else... Hmm...

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  8 лет назад

      +Ray Mercado Hey Ray! Unfortunately I think that I no longer have the drawings for the tables... I can tell you the tables are 4' wide and 2' deep, each section (vertical section, horizontal section) is made up like a ladder with rungs crossing between the longer members, this makes the workbenches incredibly stiff and stable given their weight! They were made from knotty pine, and all the joints are held together with 3x 3/8" dowels per joint.

      Well if you check out the rest of my videos you'll see that you can get started with fairly simple tools! No need to wait for the fancy shop to get started!

      Haha, yeah last place was a large basement in a super old industrial building... I couldn't deal with being in a shared space any more (lots of problems) so I had to get my own space. More expensive of course but I think it was the right decision!

    Very nice tour, I see that you're a great fan of 5S and very well organized. I'm fascinated with your grinding jig, I've made several over time but not as nice as your design. Would you consider making one and selling it? If not, would you do a video showing how you made it. Very nice workshop, well thought out, you can tell you have greater pride in your work. Thanks for showing us.

      +Scott Bradley hey Scott! I'm a software developer as well so I tend to take a lot of my organizational techniques from that! I don't have plans for the jig unfortunately, but there are lots of photos of it online!

    How'd you get started in making knives?

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад

      Hey Ray!
      Thanks mate! I got started making knives when I was pretty young, basically making 'shivs' out of butter knives and such using a bench grinder. After that I spent some time with a master knifemaker in Australia named Neil Charity. I was too young to have the patience for the craft at that time though and left it for quite a while... Got back into it about 2 years ago now after a friend asked me to make him a knife.

    Great videos! I have been making knives for about a year and am looking into getting a milling machine. What kind do you use. I saw your video on making the sanding block and really liked it....just one of the many projects I could use a mill for. I was thinking of starting out with the Harbor Freight mini mill (I know its cheap Chinese buts that about all I can afford right now). Keep up the good work on informative videos. By the way I love your grinding jig as well.

      The mill I'm using is the same as the Grizzly G0704. It's 'ok' but not really a great machine. If you have the room I'd really recommend you have a look around for a used bridgeport or similar as an alternative.

    Boy thats one beautiful shop. I have hats off for that being that organized in a small amount of space is hard to do. But you make beutiful knives i wish i could have the craftsmanship to be as good as you. In the next week or so im going to try to make a blade so im probably going to refer to your videos haha . One question though where can you buy a2 tool steel? Anyways thanks for the great vids

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад

      Nathaniel Byerly Thanks mate!
      A2 can be bought from most industrial supply places, you can also get it from Amazon and OnlineMetals.com if you want an online source. However if you're just getting started A2 is not the steel to use as you need a kiln to heat-treat it. I recommend starting with O1 tool steel, I have a video that shows how to heat-treat it!

    awesome shop and awesome knives Sir!... an idea for your files, use another peg board and hang them up, much better for them and it looks nice too...

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад +1

      That's a good idea mate! Not sure why I hadn't thought of that, I will have to see if I can find pegboard space!

      Gough Custom you could also hang them on the end/edge of your work bench.

    Loving your work. Interested to know how you go about laser engraving your knives. You didn't mention this in your tour. Looking for simple machine myself here in the UK but not cheap and seem complicated. Cheers

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад

      Hey mate! The laser is not mine actually, it's owned by a local company that does the laser engraving for me. The machines are fairly expensive, but the smaller ones can be had reasonably inexpensively, but I don't know how reliable they are...

    Nice shop Aaron! One quick question.... is your jig home made or did u buy it somewhere wishing you a happy new year keep up the good work!

  • @mrboat580
    @mrboat580 9 лет назад

    O1 will air harden to the point that a cobalt drill bit will not cut it. I made a knife of O1 and drilled one of the holes for the pins the wrong size. Thought I had 1/4" pin stock but it was actually 3/16". So, I made a cookie for the hole with a broach, and tig (fused) welded it, which was no more than a couple of quick pulses. Let it cool on it's own and then proceeded to redrill with the proper sized bit. It promptly dulled a brand new Norsman cobalt bit! Had to anneal the entire knife over again and let it ramp down for hours.
    Nice shop, btw. I was curious as to how the bevel jig was working out for you which is what led me here.

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom  9 лет назад

      Mr Boat The bevel grinding jig seems to work really well! Took me a while to get the hang of it, but it's pretty consistent now!
