    You guys have asked again and again "show us how to make a dress!" So here we go! A simple, girl's dress, with a lining. But don't let that scare you. It might sound complicated, but it's easier than you think. Yay! For this video we're using one of the most popular patterns from my site--- the First Day Dress, which can be sewn as a shirt, as a dress, with sleeves, with a twirly skirt option. So many looks! Feel free to use any pattern you have, or make your own pattern and follow along with the steps! Let's get started.

    SEWING MACHINE RECOMMENDS:
    My current sewing machine is a Baby Lock BRILLIANT. If you're looking to buy a good entry level machine, I love many machines in this series called JOY, ZEAL, and JUBILANT. You can purchase and read some reviews on this site (they are out of stock on some of them due to the pandemic and everyone sewing masks, but hopefully they will have more soon!):

    Thank you so much for the amazingly clear and detailed pattern and video. I just finished this dress for my granddaughter and it’s beautiful. I’m 52 years old and this is the first garment I’ve ever sewn since learning to sew a couple of months ago! I’m so proud of myself right now!

    I love this pattern.❤️ brought it yesterday and made a size 6 yrs,today I'm making a size 7,just for the extra room.
    I did a little trick my mum taught me with the elastic cord and that is to tape the loop together before you insert it in between the fabric pieces as this keeps the loop together, works a treat.
    Still a newbie after 20 plus years of sewing so watched this video over and over. I nailed it. 😁

    • @katielove9932
      @katielove9932 3 года назад

      Taping the cord can make the needle sticky if it goes through it. The best way to hold the cord together is to take a stitch or two through it to secure it. That way, the needle doesn't get sticky and jam-up.

    Hello from Pflugerville! :D I can't tell you how much I appreciate this tutorial. I was following a pattern yesterday that did an extremely poor job of explaining the back of the dress slit and cord concept. I highly recommend this pattern to anyone regardless of their sewing skill. The only thing which I really would like the seam allowance instead of 3/8, 4/8 would give more room and comfort to sew with less error.

    with that toddler A-line, with enough outside scrap material left, for her newborn baby granddaughter. Used a Co-ording solid, lining fabric. Thanks :-}

    SHORTCUT ALERT: Super cute dress. Love the way you do the hem, that's my favourite method. I do a lot of bulk sewing for charities so have developed tons of shortcuts. Rather than do all that clipping and folding under for armholes, I just leave the shoulder seams open for turning then do them last. Fold a little hem under front shoulder and put back should into the "tube". That way I can sew up the armholes while inside out flat with a 1/4" seam so there's no need for clipping or turning under. I also make the neck larger so there's no need for closure. Am I lazy or what? :)

    Nice presentation. If you were to make a simple top that didn't have an opening in the back, it would be a lot easier when using a lining, to first sew only around the necklines, and arm holes of the fabric and lining. And not the shoulder seams on either one. Then, turn the lining right size out. But not the blouse fabric. Push the lining up under the blouse fabric aligning the shoulder seams. The right sides should be together. Then, sew the shoulder seams together of the lining and blouse. Turn the front lining over the blouse and the side seams can be sewn down. It gives a very professional look.

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  3 года назад

      Thanks Katie! Yea, those are great tips! If you cut the neckline lower, that would work. I wanted the design to have a retro 60s vibe, so the neckline is a bit higher.

    I echo Rachel’s comments below! Adult designs would be fab. I love the way you make everything manageable, thank you, as well as your bright, fun fabric designs ( I sell these in my shop incidentally so that shows how much I like them lol).

      Thanks Christine! Yes, I plan to show some adult garments down the road. Adult clothing is sometimes a bit more complicated because there are many different body shapes, and often the clothing requires a pattern piece, which is why I haven't done many garment videos till now. It's just an added element to the video. I'm glad you make similar dresses too! They are so much fun! :) Dana

    Hi Dana,
    I found your video by accident and have fallen in love with your tutorials. I love how detailed and precise you are in showing how to sew and the little tips that are a great help. I made a simple, elastic waist skirt with pockets for a friend and it turned out so well that she couldn't believe that I had made it. It is because I did everything exactly as you had shown in the video. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of just the skirt. Will have to edit the picture where she has it on, so that it doesn't show her face, before I post it.
    I am planning on making this dress for a friend's daughter. I love it, because I don't have her exact measurements, so I was looking for a dress that didn't fit to the bodice and this is a perfect one. Love the tip for the sleeves.
    Thank you for the wonderful ideas and videos!

    I'm a beginner, so someone gave me several bags of miscellaneous fabrics. Many of them are too sheer to wear without lining. Alas there is no lining fabric in the bags. So I'm using two different fabrics to make a reversible dress. Looks very good. Thanks for the instructions.

    I just have one suggestion. When sewing the neckline, take the time to sew it in 2 parts. Start at the center front and go to the shoulder continuing to the center back. Then go back to the center front and do the same for the other side. Your neckline won't ripple that way.

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. 4 года назад

      That's a good tip! Ripples are so annoying and make your work look less professional.

    Thank you so much! I’m a beginner and am looking to sew simple dresses for my baby girl. This is a perfect video for me! Two questions:
    1. Will the pattern work for an eight month old?
    2. Are the fabrics for both the dress and lining cotton?
    Love your videos. Thank you so much!

    • @MADEEveryday
      @MADEEveryday  6 лет назад

      Hi there, you could make a dress like this for a baby, but it might be hard to get on and off.....in that instance it might be easier to have something that fully opens in the back, or has a wider opening at the top of the dress. My particular pattern here starts at 2 years old. But I always love a sewing adventure! So use something that your child owns and draw your own pattern piece similar to this and try it out!
      Yes, both the outer and lining fabrics are 100% cotton. But you could also use linen, polyester, or heavier cottons.

      MADE Everyday Thank u so much fr replying. Ah yes you’re right, it will be difficult to take on and off. I’ll try to make my own pattern. Never done it before, hope I can! Could you make a video on how to sew short sleeves on a dress pls? I find that daunting!
