    Lee passed away in October 2016 at the age of 29. I can’t imagine what his life was like, but he’s at peace now. My heart goes out to his Mum and family and those who were close to him. What a sweet man he was and his girlfriend was a rare young woman. ❤️

    I remember seeing this episode years ago, and I honestly don't think I want to watch it again. The suffering of that young man is harrowing. The moment when he literally falls into unconsciousness from the pain, experiences a moment of peace, only to wake up to the same pain a few seconds later, is genuinely haunting.

      Yeah, it’s incredibly sad. Lee seems a great guy & this is a terrible affliction for one so young. He really tries so hard to be chipper & brave but it’s obvious the pain is excruciating. This is a terrible blight on someone who’s only 24. I really hope they find some cures/better management of Behçet’s in the future. Poor Lee! 🙁

      I’m not a doctor and I know this is like ten years old, but I knew someone with Behçet’s disease, and they were in nowhere near that much pain.
      What it does remind of is something that afflicted my mom called Meralgia Paresthetica.
      She was put on neurontin/gabapentin which saved her life bc she would’ve ended her own life bc of the unrelenting pain.

      I had a paronychia on my toe about a month ago. Have had them many times so I just kept draining it and usually after 3-4 days it will heal. This time it didn't, and it got so bad I was having problems walking and redness was radiating up. The ER doctor understood when I said I get them and they'd usually be gone by now, that is why I never saw a dr until then. Turns out the pressure from my shoe during standing at work was what was causing it to get worse. Antibiotics and a note off for 4 days with instructions to not wear any shoes at all for 2 days and it finally went away. I didn't wait for 2 weeks though lol

      Before the doc had said it, I was thinking the exact same. As a radiographer who worked in the NHS it’s insane the stuff folks come through A&E with. We had one girl come in before with a broken nail and she said the wait was too long at her GP so she said A&E was faster. Not what A&E was designed for. We were under so much stress to see everyone within 4 hours, this definitely didn’t help. I can see why the doc was annoyed with him. Thankfully, I’m out of that life now. So stressful.

    From one chronic pain patient to another, treasure her Lee. Let her love you, let her help you, let her show you all the ways she cares, and then do exactly that for her as well. I developed debilitating chronic pain after I met my husband, and I sometimes feel like this wasn't what he signed up for. It's taken 15 years, that he is finally starting to convince me that he knew what he was getting into. He's the one who taught me what unconditional really means in love and relationships. I hope you and Megan have the same happiness, care, and love that I have found with my person.

      Yes the chronic pain is unbearable, but because there isn't a physical wound to go with it they treat it as a thing of naught. The pain I can promise you is just as real as the pain cancer patients feel especially when it goes on for a long time and it gets completely beyond reason. If they would just listen to us and get it under control within the first 15 minutes things wouldn't go out of control like Blood Pressure, tachycardia. We have no control of what or brain perceives as pain. All we know is that is real as real can get. Normal doses of meds don't work for us, it has to be enough to take a horse down and even then it doesn't work to take the pain away. We aren't drug seekers because the drugs don't work the same on us. What would make you high as a kite, barely takes down the pain us. It just doesn't work correctly.

    I watch this from the US and I wouldn’t miss an episode , It has given me so much knowledge about A&E patient injuries and treatment . I have learned so many medical terms . It was so helpful when a friend was in very critical condition due to heart issues . He was hanging on by a hair and had many procedures done over 3 months and I knew what the medical terms they were going to do . With prayers and I give glory to god for his recovery and to the Drs and nurses and therapist who did the leg work to save him . He is coming home this week and Drs and therapist are calling him a miracle . It was gods choice to save him , I give glory to god and a huge appreciation for the many , many Heath care workers who had a hand in it !!! ❤

      I think it's because he wasted the emergency departments time. He'd had a sore toe for weeks and didn't bother seeing his GP. Even if the pain was worse that evening he should have seen a GP the next day. His issue was not remotely close to being an emergency.

  • @DeputatKaktus
    @DeputatKaktus 2 месяца назад +1

    Dude with the bruised toe…well I understand where he is coming from and that toe injuries hurt like a mofo. Been there myself, though what I thought was a bruised foot that just needed some rest turned out to be three broken toes (in a spectacular mixture of blue and violet, with a subtle green hue around the edges). So back then my mum had the right hunch to insist on taking me straight to hospital.
    I am not saying that him waiting for a few weeks and then going to the ER was a smart move. He probably short circuited a little when he realized that things were not really getting better and that he would need to wait another few weeks for an appointment (meaning more time in pain) at his GP. And his head went „Nope, screw that, you’re going to the ER“.
    so in essence, this is another case of somebody treating the emergency department as a sort of express lane for medical services.

    7:00 I am able to see the LAS/HEMS blue call/trauma call book. I used to work at RLH ED where this would be deemed confidential. Although it does not reveal a patients identity, it should not be shown on television for anyone to see.

    I wonder if things are still like this program shows. I just saw a documentary about a journalist that went undercover inside A&E and the patients were treated horribly. People having to wait for 40+ hours unattended in the "Fit and Sit" areas. Reckless care, neglect. Makes you wonder.

    • @DawnIsComing
      @DawnIsComing Месяц назад

      While I don’t want to discredit the professionalism and care the medical care professionals display on this show, I think it’s important to remember that people absolutely tend to be on their best behavior when they know they’re being observed, recorded, filmed, etc. in their place of work, (especially for something like a television series,) and you know that your personal and professional reputation (and, by extension, your job/livelihood) all have the potential to be significantly affected depending on how your behavior is viewed by others.
      As you might also notice, there are often dozens of people in the waiting rooms in every episode that we never see or hear about with respect to their medical needs, care, or outcome. This is not to say that those people and their stories are being excluded for “nefarious” reasons (like being mistreated by the doctors,) as they are likely mostly either very mundane/“routine” visits (ie. Kitchen/household mishaps, sprains and fractures, cold & flu cases, etc.) or the patient declined to have their visit/medical care featured on the show; (Which is also completely understandable) that being said, it does mean that we don’t know or hear about or from the majority of the people who are treated at even St. George’s on the days they film, let alone everyone else who’s in hospital, or receiving care from any of the hundreds of other A&E facilities in the country.
      The producers/production company also has extensive legally binding contracts with the Hospitals they film and feature in their show. I think it is very likely that there are clauses in these agreements prohibiting the production company from portraying the medical facilities in unfavorable ways, or including any footage or content that would imply unethical treatment or malpractice by the staff in any way.
      At the end of the day, these shows are ultimately made for entertainment; and, while they do consist of real-time events, people, and their care in these facilities, these shows aren’t made for or intended to be an accurate, sociologically/scientifically reputable account of the “reality” of people’s experiences in UK A&Es.
      All of this to say that, while I love this show, and I genuinely believe that the doctors, nurses, and other medical assistants and administrators here are at the top of their field in professionalism and skill, I don’t think that this show (or any like it) can/should be considered an accurate, unbiased, or comprehensive representation of what health care is like in the UK. Many of the problems that have come to light/gained traction in recent years are hardly new, but have only now really come to the attention of Americans, Canadians, etc.
      That being said, it is worth noting that there have been efforts in the past several years by both Medical institutions and some members of the British population to incorporate more privatized options and policies in the UK’s healthcare system to make it more profitable, and allow individuals to have more options for their own care than the NHS has traditionally provided. Of course, they brought in one of the biggest consulting firms in America to do this, and while the US is absolutely the best country to model if you want to have a profitable healthcare system, well… I probably don’t have to say much more than that.
      I can’t say for certain whether this is the sole cause of the purported (and likely legitimate) deterioration in the quality of treatment and care in UK facilities, but it* certainly hasn’t helped to improve them in those areas.
