  • The Barrow-downs were ancient burial grounds in the realm of Arnor and the petty-kingdom of Cardolan in Tolkien’s Middle-earth! Today, we will discuss the region’s history and what made it such a fell land, from honoured to accursed. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on the Barrow-downs in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    The entire tale of the Barrow-Downs and the house of Tom Bombadil would probably make for a worthwhile short film on its own. So if Peter Jackson won't do it, perhaps it's time for some smaller filmmaker to take on the challenge . . . perhaps in high-quality animation?

    The Witch King had Morgul Blades. When Frodo is wounded by a Morgul Blade it is said that if untreated he would fade into a wraith under the Witch Kings control.
    I often wondered if that is where the burrow wights came from.
    They were once heros who fought against the witch kings forces but were turned into lesser wraiths by the Morgul Blades.

    I don’t blame them for cutting this whole section out, but man would the Barrow Wights have been great to see in live action.
    I remember they were creepy enough in the Fellowship game - for the 3 people who remember that existed lmao - so I’m sure that whole region and the Wight could have been done great in the movie too.

    I love LOTR, the Silmarillion, and various other stories of Middle-Earth, but I never got through The Hobbit until I dated my guy. He was like, “Well we must remedy this,” and we read it chapter by chapter as we’ve dated. We’re planning on reading other stories together, as a way of staying connected while apart due to covid (he lives in a hotspot, and I’m chronically ill, so it’s a bit difficult to see him safely). Early on he compared me to the Arkenstone, and I knew he was the one. 😅 We’re planning to have a Tolkien inspired wedding with his young godson as ringbearer. His feet may or may not be fuzzy. 😁 In between our readings of Middle-Earth, I think this channel and its videos will be great content to both deepen our understanding of Tolkien’s work and satisfy the fantasy itch when reading one of the books isn’t really possible. Thanks for all the work you put in. Frodo lives!!!

    Now here’s something I never thought about: was that on purpose that Tolkien made a sword from Cardolan (and this, Arnor) to play a role in the dooming of the Witch King? Like a long overdue revenge from the very doom he had brought upon the kingdom centuries ago? 🤔

    • @MenoftheWest
      @MenoftheWest  3 года назад +21

      Absolutely, I love that idea! Arnor, while being a lost realm of old, still played a role in the defeats of Sauron and the nemesis of Arnor: the Witch-king.

      The paragraph where Merry stabs the Witch King says that even the maker of the blade had no idea it would end up killing the Witch King himself.
      Tolkien loves having the past return to the present in LoTR. Sam sees Earendil in the sky in Mordor. Treebeard comes to life and recalls the ancient times. The Fellowship literally walks into Khazad-dúm and Lothlorien. Minas Tirith ,Helm's Deep and Isengard are fortresses again, Aragorn awakens the dead.
      It is all the same, one story despite time gaps.

    I forgot that the barrow-downs existed until you posted this. I really liked that part of the book where Frodo had to save the lives of his friends from the barrow-wights.

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus 3 года назад +5

      Danae m : I liked the part where Frodo was tempted to abandon his unconscious friends and escape the barrow on his own, using the Ring. I’m sure the Ring put that thought in his head. Had Frodo been less noble and brave, and more like an ordinary hobbit, he would have done so, inevitably dooming himself.
      Even if Frodo had survived to meet Strider at Bree on his own, most likely he would have been overcome by the Morgul blade the Witch King stabbed him with on Weathertop, as the torment of guilt for having abandoned his friends would have greatly weakened his will to resist its fell power. Frodo would have died, or worse still, become a wraith himself and taken the Ring to Sauron.

      Oh look, it’s Rohan and Gondor, both unintentionally working together to fill my head with the lore and knowledge that is the beautiful world of JRR Tolkien’s.
      I normally don’t ask questions or make requests, but since you’re both here, I’ll give y’all an easy one:
      _If JRR Tolkien was still alive, and you got one chance to say or ask something.. what would you both say to him?_
      I would probably thank him for showing both my childhood and adult life of tales of splendor and wonder, to thank him for not only paving a road of golden memories to my heart, but for also opening up my mind to the wonder that is proper storytelling, so that I may one day share it with the people I love, such as my two younger brothers, and hopefully one day, my own children, in full circle.. i~i

    Maan oh maan, The barrow_wight that kidnapped our three hobbits was creepy, and as you said it was likely originally the last nûmenorian prince of cardolan which makes it even creepier.also, the book frodo was really awesome by battling the wight. and another thing that makes this tale interesting is the fact that this is a kind of magic that was created by man, since the witch king was originally a man. oh god the nazgul are terrifying

  • @Longshanks1690
    @Longshanks1690 3 года назад +2

    I know the explanation for why Pippin’s dagger could wound the Witch King is that the men of Arnor fought against Angmar for so long they eventually found a way, but my question is...how?
    How did the smiths who forged the daggers know how to fight the Nazgul? How could they possibly find this out, much less have them be effective enough on the Dark Lord’s servants to actually work?
    And if they did find a way, how come no one else found the secret either and only these blades can do it?

    • @TheMinecraftHype
      @TheMinecraftHype 3 года назад

      The quote about the Witch-king mentions: "No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will."
      To me, this merely says the Barrow-blade HURTS them much more - not that they are the only type of blade to harm the Nazgul (I think any blade could indeed cause pain - just none more than these).
      People interpret the 'spell' as supernatural - as if the blade somehow made the WK mortal. I interpret it differently... to simplify the sentence:
      '...breaking the hold that knit his body to his will' So imo, all that is happening is the WK being immobilised by immense pain. He has no control over his body - as would many people when in pain. If you got shot in the leg, you wouldn't be able to continue to do what you were doing - you would be shocked, and in agony - with little control over yourself (in other words, breaking the 'spell' that knits your body to your will).
      So to answer your question, I don't think they knew a special way to beat the Nazgul - but merely designed a weapon to hurt a bunch (I doubt they were made specifically for Nazgul combat, but combat in general - as standard enemies were attacking Cardolan for the most part).

      I'd like to think it was made a sacred place again, whether the wights had to be slain or not. It was a sacred place, and the Dunedain are a learned people. I find it hard to believe Aragorn would vacation near lake evendim unless he was able to make good progress on Arnor's restoration.

    A question I have asked before, but no one has answered with any proof from Tolkien, but where did most of the Dunedain live in Arnor just before the War of the Ring? Some people have said the Angle, but it seems too close to the Ettenmoors, even though it is near Rivendell. I would have always thought that the women and children would have been in villages to the West of the Shire, close to Lindon.
    The one thing I question about your video is where did you get the information that Cardolan's capital was on the Barrow Downs and not in Tharbad? I know it was said in the tale of years that the men of Cardolan fortified the downs against Angmar, but not that their Capital was there.
    Thanks.
