Actually no conscious rappers have been themselves and never tried to be something they're not or imitate the next man it's a mainstay tradition Common, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Outkast, Phonte, Mad Squablz, STRO all are true to who they are with no put on gangsta front unless it's to fit a track they're on. Sound like southern rap trends i.e. dance moves but I listed Outkast so... no excuse.

For sure he’s a large part of it in hip hop, but let’s not pretend like all these new eccentric rappers are necessarily being themselves .. just like young kids saw Cam in the triple XL pink hoodies and the massive chains and followed that, kids saw shit like Lil B and Young Thug and are following that.
I’m not hating - pics of me from back in 06-07 when I was 14 with black hair, nails, and a lip ring make me laugh now, and everyone follows some sort of trends when they’re a kid - but not all these kids are necessarily being themselves because they’re doing weird shit that wasn’t the norm a while ago.
I’m not the biggest fan of the mumble rap/Lils/the new sound of things, but I def enjoy a lot of Uzi, Thug is great when he’s great (I’m at about a 50-50 with him .. the songs I like I really love, but the other half of his shit sounds like total trash to me), and I love how Cordae is sonically coming with a Trap/new sound (though still does the boom bap shit) while spitting real bars over that shit.

Nah I don't think that he's underrated. Or Soulja boy either. There has been so many artists that have shouted him out and said he's inspired him. Just my opinion.

b literally STARTED the whole style of style over substance, being authentic to yourself regardless of the wave, creativity over talent and steelo over everything. everyone laughed at him - and now the radio proves he knew what he was doing. dude was operating in the future.
