    I have L2501 (maybe 20hp at pto)with 5ft Bush hog. Recently got a 10 acre property. Fenced and sectioned in to 4 areas. The whole property was cut in March of this year (2019) I was able to get to it after purchase in Sept. A lot of one pasture was like the one you chopped in this video. Mind you I'm in Florida. Grass growing season is much longer lol like End of Jan it starts. I was able to keep it about 8" cut first pass. I let it dry and settle. 2nd pass after a few days maybe take 3 more inches off and yielded nice results for neglected property. Now i use it to keep after it and keep it about 4". Looks like a really big yard with no wind rows or piles. Seat time is nice. I may convert 5 acres to hay. but... like i said, the seat time is nice. Now I cut with it in Med range and hydro to the floor. About an acre right at house i use little yard rider, wow what difference climbing off the "L". Don't always need the biggest or best, just need the equipment. Thanks for the pages you and your Family have. Hello to Hunter.

    Mike here from Texas - getting my own L3301HSt delivered Saturday with front loader, grapple, 5ft shredder and box blade to work 40 acres of timberland in East Texas we purchased for ATV running around and hunting.. This is my second go around with Kubota having had a 2350 when I lived west of Houston

    WOW, my wife is from Washington Pa beautiful country. She was born and raised there. She's in Alabama now.
    I just asked that same question the other day, I have a L2501 I cut with and love the tractor. I'm using a five foot bush hog but was thinking about getting a six foot. I got my answer, I do believe I'll keep the five foot.
    Thanks

    Going back and watching this again, more interested now that I just got a kubota L275. My kubota b7100 just is to small for a lot of heavy work... The L275 is not HST... 8 gears forward, seven reverse.. forwards and backward one lever, gears another... really love it.... Thinking it will handle the five footer no problem...

    You would be like I am now in the house where it is cold, but very hot outside. I have to go outside since it is cooler now in the afternoon and put one of my tractor's to work and put the battery in one of my mower's. I use my brush hog about once a month to mow some areas close to the house and will have to mow the road going back into our gravel pit and back to the lines of our property. That is a nice setup you have and the mower is the right size for your tractor and I love the setup.

    I debated on getting a brush hog and finish mower. Finish mower did not make sense for my use. I ended up with a flail mower. My biggest deciding factor was how much real estate was coming off the back of the tractor with the brush hog. Storage is simple as it is the same size as my box blade and snow thrower. Great vid

      I bought a 41" flail mower for my BX a month ago but now I need to sell it. It works great though. Cuts tall grass like a finish mower. Msg me if interested.

    Good video, that's quite a bit of highway driving. I have a Kubota L4150 with 50 hp at the pto I use a "Bush Hog Squealer" with 60" cut I think the Bush Hog is comparable to the Land Pride, that Bush Hog is the recommended hog for the 50 hp pto but it will cut 1.5"-2" trees a clump of maple trees it doesn't handle so well but all it does is stall the tractor and the stump jumper jumps a bit. The property in your video was mowed before so you are likely safe, but when I cut property that I have not cut before I go bucket first with the bucket curled up and the back of the bucket about 6" off the ground, this does a few things, one if you come across a bolder that is bigger the bucket will ride up and you can stop and go around the boulder, if it hits something like a metal rod or post it will scrape and you will hear and know something is there and you can avoid it, and the third thing is ditches if you ride with the bucket down if one wheel heads into a ditch you cannot see the bucket will keep the front end up so you can notice the ditch and back-up to get out of it easier. A cab with air is also nice in the heat and dust but it is really nice when hornets are beating on the side door trying to get in, be careful with no cab sometimes the nests are in the trees and you cannot see them but a rub with the bucket or the tractor and they come a knockin. And I also have hogged with no cab tractor and had spiders fall on my arm and bite a string of bites down my arm as it ran off my hand, weird and painful my want a long sleeve shirt. I like cutting bushes it has nice smell and it is gratifying work and you also get to see the odd hawk get a mouse or snake as you are exposing the fields, I go around the perimeter and all the creatures go to the center, as I get toward the center the critters make a break for the treeline and the show is on, Ha!

      Run the landpride 1860 behind the 3800 w/ 30 PTO HP and it will take down 3". Set your slip clutch -- you should not be stalling a tractor with an attachment!

    There certainly are more considerations other than just HP in deciding what size brush hog is appropriate, as you alluded to. I have a Kubota MX4700 w/ 39.5 PTO HP, pulling a Bush Hog® 5' Squealer SQ 160. I could easily handle a 6' brush hog under most conditions, but down here in the humid Georgia summer, the pond dams I cut every couple of weeks or so are seeded in bahiagrass that regenerates vigorously. I have to mow in second gear/low range (shuttle-shift transmission) in many places to keep from bogging down. Admittedly, I do mow fairly low to achieve the look I'm going for, but any more brush hog width and I'd be having to mow twice - once high and then low. Additionally, I mow wooded trails frequently that are barely the width of my tractor, so my 5' Bush Hog® matches the tread width of my tractor perfectly. It pays to have a pretty clear understanding of the terrain you'll be using your implement on before deciding what size is most appropriate for your machine. I'm enjoying your videos!

      comlbbeau- if you haven't noticed, the fibrous nature of Bahia is always a mowing issue with all mowers, regardless of the mower width or power behind it. That's why many people do not like Bahia. Glad to know a 5 footer works for you.

    I recently finished mowing our 16 acre pasture that hadn't been mowed in a couple of years. It had copses of Persimmon trees, and a lot of dewberry and multiflora rose. I used a six foot LandPride rotary mower on an L 35-40 Kubota. It took me about four days of intermittent mowing, between other projects. Yes, things slowed down in the dense stuff, and going up hill, but the tractor did get it done. Some of the woody stuff was over an inch in diameter, but the mower and tractor were up to the task. I did have to blow out the screens and three radiators a couple of times, the chaff just wants to stop the air flow... Now I've got the six acre hay field that hasn't been mowed this year. Oh yay! Great tractors, those Kubotas, and darned nice mowers from LandPride.

    I was using a 6ft woods behind my L2800 and it worked really good in even thick tall stuff. it was a chore to pull through the wooded areas though and really did not make cutting any faster than a 5ft. needless to say I replaced the woods 6ft with a woods 5 ft brush bull. I like the 5ft a lot better and seems to do a really nice job just as fast as the 6ft did. I cut sort of slow anyway since cutting known areas are very relaxing. unknown areas are not so relaxing as I worry what I may hit in there. enjoyed the video and the music was nice as was the ride to and from the job.

    I noticed the bent piece of threaded rod on the top of your mower. This is a cool idea to hang your driveshaft on when not in use. I'm going to make some for all my mowers. So simple and so awesome.

    I have a L3301 and LP 1860 and I agree with you 5' is the only choice as far as width goes. Less than 5' you don't cover your tire width and over 5' the tractor is under powered for thick tall grass and weeds.

  • @davidknows3320
    @davidknows3320 7 лет назад +1

    I can run a six footer on my 1986 L2850. Of course, you don't always make a full cut, but it is nice having the width in the thinner areas. I go 5' for less weight in wet areas.

    Good video. Glad I watched it. If you have the interest, I have some tips.
    First, the PTO available is influenced by the transmission. HST transmissions are convenient but rob power, while "DT" (gear) transmissions are most efficient. I have a Kubota GST, which I love because it is efficient like gear but can be "power shifted". Some may dispute how much HST requires, but *under load* I have experienced my old Kubota 23hp gear performing almost as well as a new Kubota 38hp HST.
    Second, the mower setup is critical. For bush/brush hogs, the rear should be slightly higher than the front. With this, the front cuts and the rear cuts anything missed, but primarily distributes the cuttings. If the rear is lower then both the front and back are cutting, sucking power and grass comes out clumpy.
    Third, personal protection. A face mask to control all of that pollen and dust is recommended. I had an allergist tell me once that whether I think it bothers me or not, keep that stuff out of your system.

    Yes - trust me - there are places hotter & more humid - i.e. SE Texas. After 67 years - still not used to it. But you do what you gotta do. I have the Kubota L3240 w/ Land Pride 5' mower and slip clutch. Very similar setup. Love it. No problems after 6 years. Have you considered a 3-point quick hitch? Lots of good ones on the market. I have the Speeco. Makes changing implements so much easier. Don't think I've heard anything negative about using one. Nice video of the Pennsylvania countryside. I've been there a few time and loved it. Beautiful, and everywhere you turn - there's American history. Dave

    Very informative. I will be getting a tractor for some land that I will be eventually building on. I have narrowed it down to two tractors. A Kubota 3901 or a New Holland Boomer 37. From the fact that you see Kubotas being used commercially while I see very few New Hollands being used I have decided the Kubota is probably worth a little more. I have driven both tractors and really like them both. The Kubota is a little smaller and lighter, but seem to have a better rep. The New Holland is bigger and heavier and felt more comfortable. I do not have a lot of expereince with tractors, but would think that if you could only get one cutter that the "rule of thumb" would be to choose one that is sized just at or just over the width of the wheels. In the case of the L3901 that would be a 60" and for the Boomer 37 a 72". Feel free to dissagree. Like I said I think this is just a rule of thumb if you could only have one cutter. If you can afford several, get them all sizes and use each according to conditions.

    Another great video Mike. Have you thought of ever getting a backhoe attachment?

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  7 лет назад

      I have, many times. However Bobcat of Pittsburgh is not far from me and treats me very well on excavator rentals, so I rent one maybe 2 or three times year, I would love to have a backhoe for mine but after running a 10,000 lb excavator with a thumb it would be difficult

    • @joshloughner5802
      @joshloughner5802 7 лет назад

      That's true. A mini excavator is alot more versatile than an attachment. Hope you make a video when it comes time to rent one!

    That is a busy highway. You need to haul your tractor on a 16 or 18 ft. trailer to other locations. Do you have slow moving vehicle signs on tractor?

    Why do you bush hog in reverse when you have the front end loader to lay the tall stuff down a bit to mow forward? Just curious!

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  7 лет назад +2

      I go both forward and back, sometimes if I'm not sure whats there I like to back into it. The brush hog rides so low I can kind of feel and obstacle instead of running it over

    Hello Mike, What is the real difference between a single rear wheel and double wheel? My local dealer does not really know. By the way do you have any preferences of a Woods vs a Rhino branded unit? This is what is available in my local area and about the same price. Thanks in advance.

      I think either splitter would work great but I think the 22 ton would handle anything you throw at it

    G'day again Mike, so do you need to have registration on your Kubota to use the roads in your area? Thanks, Oh, and heading pretty rapidly to 2000 subs 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  7 лет назад

      Well, as far as I can tell I'm good with just the triangle on the back on these roads, bigger roads would be a no no

      +Outdoors With The Morgans wow, thats great, here in Australia, even the riding mowers that the city use to do the sides of the roads etc, ALL need to registered, another 'freedom' to protect 👍🏻🇦🇺🇺🇸

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  6 лет назад +1

      Mike Wells, 5' will work good in most applications, heavy brush you will slow down but overall 5' would be fine

  • @GregPascal

    Why are you mowing while backing up? Just curious since it is a lot of wasted motion.

    • @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans
      @OutdoorsWithTheMorgans  7 лет назад +1

      Sometimes I back up when there may be obstacles, the back of the brush hog will kind of push on them instead of running them over going forwards

    • @BlackHawkBallistic
      @BlackHawkBallistic 6 лет назад

      Have you ever considered going forward with the bucket close to the ground? Whenever we're going through super thick stuff we usually run the tractor with the loader through first with it close to the ground so it bumps stuff before we hit it and lets us move it.

  • @TheTorkerman
    @TheTorkerman 7 лет назад

    Man, it made light work of that tall stuff Mike, so the brush hog, this is a flail type mower??

    How do you not get into trouble not having a slow moving vehicle triangle? Or is there a local law in the borough/s not requiring it? Not trying to be a negative Nancy. Just asking.
