- For nearly a decade, it has been my dream to break free from all synthetic clothing, all fast-fashion, all clothing made in factories. It’s been my dream to be truly connected to my clothes - to know not just the source of the fabric, but to know the source of every single element of my clothes - the thread, the buttons and even the dye to create the colors.
Last night I finally broke free from industrial clothing.
Every item in my small wardrobe is now natural fiber, naturally dyed and homemade.

i'm so utterly impressed. I love every single one of my clothes especially the ones that are historic or handmade but I still own MUCH of the clothes I bought years before I understood about how devaluing synthetic fibers are to the body, earth and soul. There's also some synthetics I love in there that would be impossible to recreate without basically being a king with a ton of cloth of gold haha. I so wish there were more cottage industries for weaves like Velvet especially which is a texture i am in love with as an autistic person. I commend and admire your journey. I'm almost at my "no newly manufactured clothing" goal. And one day would like to wear "absolutely no synthetic fibers" in my wardrobe. I'm getting into natural dying this year in a hopes to go deeper than just sewing and start making things from raw cloth materials made without synthetic dyes scents and chemicals. Slow and steady wins the race.

I just retired and I have been wanting to relieve myself of polyester pants. I stopped buying a year before I retired. I need cotton clothes anyway. I have been buying org. cotton. There are folks here in Oakland, Berkeley that want to source, make, sell clothing within 100 miles. They are doing a good job. The last three years were hard on all businesses and esp. now some org went out of business. We need the push for clean clothes in all respects, now more than ever. Thank you, Rob.
Make sure you don't wear polyester close to your body, like underwear, or have poly sheets pillowcases and blankets which will cause you to breath in microplastic all night.
I also have polyester pants that I want to let go of. They are really comfortable and versatile, and my goal is to copy them with linen or cotton, then let go of them somehow (ideally giving them away). Part of my reason is environmental, but emotionally my reason is that I'm afraid to get too close to a fire in polyester, lest the plastic somehow melt to my skin. I don't think this would happen just from sitting next to a bonfire, but I get the intrusive thought anyway.

In Oaxaca, Mexico, there are still people that use hand looms and natural dyes for wool and cotton cloth. Now if you can just put together the Flintstones version of a video camera ;)

Been consciously getting rid of plastic for years now. This year, ramped it up. 365 pieces for the year was the goal. Couldnt believe it when we're at 1900 pieces in two months (family of 4). Every synthetic label on clothing, every kitchen item, etc. Making my own clothes too. Wish there were more like minded people nearby to chat, and have fun doing the process with. Probably still have 500+ pieces of synthetics/ plastics to go and then it will be a completely natural materials home only. Its fun + fulfilling.

@@Robin.Greenfield Hey mate. I want you to know you were one of a very few select group of individuals who inspired me along the way a few years ago to go on this route. I consumed a lot of your content on various platforms. The idea to me has become a simple matter of common sense. Take care of what we have, and it will take care of you. There's no need to poison Mother Earth because if you kill our host, then we are dead too. Btw, we are now at 2174 individual pieces of plastic, synthetic anything, or mix of natural/synthetic anything less than two weeks later. We still have about 500-1000 pieces to go I feel. Its amazing just how much junk we make part of our lives. I hope you feel encouraged along your way by helping/ inspiring folks like me to think a little and protect what we have. Although I have no doubt that the junk we have tried to recycle will end up in a landfill/ the ocean somehow, at least I can feel confident that the next 30 years of whatever is left of my life will bless the earth, rather than hurt it overall. Prost!

I have been on my own journey for years now. I thrift most clothes. I only buy pure 100% linen, hemp and silk. Some cotton. I knit and crochet with linen, hemp and cotton. I live in the Philippines now so it fits my bohemian lifestyle.
When you study about clothing and fashion from ancient Egypt and Greece, you will learn that the process to turn natural fibers such as cotton and flax/linen into fabrics are still processed with exactly the same five steps as was done 5000 years ago. It's just that machinery is used today.

I buy second-hand, from ethical companies (at least I trust they're ethical), and am learning to sew. I consider myself a minimalist and a responsible consumer, so I was going to share some statistics about my clothes in this comment... but it turns out I have a lot more clothes (21 shirts? I do laundry weekly) and a lot more plastic (in the elastic at the waist, in the thread they are sewn with, etc) than I realized.

What I wholesome moment! I'm so deep in consumerism I don't know where to begin. I feel like getting rid of my stuff will only add to the problem! And I also swing back and forth between minimalism and addiction to shopping. Last time I came out of my minimalist "phase" I ended up buying a lot of stuff back. I'm trying to break free but I keep going back for some reason. I can never be settled 😢

Cool video and unconsciously years ago I started dressing plain with no logos and solid colors. I want to break away too from being psychologically tricked to buy things I do not need or really want and also many items you purchase will decrease your life span and happiness, yet we purchase anyways. I am ready to build a food forest and live self stainable why we still have freedom to do so. I have a feeling that we are close to a recycling period where population decreases by 99.9 percent, which seem to happen every 200 years or so. Thanks for sharing.

I have owned a bamboo bicycle in the past, however a steel frame bicycle is the most practical and long term sustainable option for me. I am an advocate for steel frame bicycles as they can last for 60+ years easily. This bike is a 1982.

This is really good and especially now that they are actually putting chips in factory clothing. Especially sportswear.
I think this would be easy in a tropical climate. Just wear a bark, hide, or leaf breechcloth. Or go naked. I think I'm going to try to either buy natural fiber clothing or clothing made from recycled plastic moving forward.
This is fascinating, Rob. I am wondering, though, did your friend sew your clothing by hand or using a machine? As a lifelong seamstress, I am just curious. Congratulations on breaking free from industrial clothing.

I love you and what you do and understand completely with not supporting industrial companies etc but just curious when you say return to earth and not litter do you believe that earth cannot break down certain materials? I've always felt like any creation from earth can be destroyed and recycled by it with enough time or is it like a don't want to poison the soil at all thing? Just curious much love❤
