  • This video will give you a look at my garden plans for May. Mid May is when I have my average last frost. This month will be planting 2 weeks before my average last frost to two weeks after my average last frost. I will give you my list of the flowers and vegetables that can be planted or direct sown before your average last frost. I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 4. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

In Alberta here pretty much running along side you even in choosing not to grow corn this year.
    Appreciate your informative videos 💞🌞🌱

Good day, beautiful Prairie Plantgirl and Buster!😃
My goodness, your grow room and greenhouse are busting at the seams with lovely starts!😃
You no longer have to find other rooms in the house to put starts.👍
    I hope you are 100 soon...colds are no fun.☹️
I love the look of corn stalks growing. My daughter and I got to where we can't eat anything with corn, and hubby doesn't eat fresh corn. My solution is that I started growing our on popcorn...for hubby and family members.🍿
I grow my corn in totes or grow bags. I hand pollinate to ensure fuller cobs at harvest.
The popcorn is given as a gift at Christmas time.
In May, we pretty much stop planting...everything is in and growing before the summer heat hits in June. We can start to see 100 degree temps in June.
I'll start transplants for our fall garden at the end of May through August. 👩🏾‍🌾
I cut a few fresh flowers for mini bouquets Saturday...a very beautiful deep orange cactus zinnia and a handful of marigolds!💐💕

Popcorn is a great idea! Thanks for the advice.
It sounds like you are able to be out enjoying your hard work to get the garden going. I’m sure your bouquets are lovely!

Your list sounds like mine. Yes to getting those plants outside as we need the room. I’m using a frost cloth tunnel over peppers since Friday and they seem happy. I know in the fall the peppers look the best so I thought why not. I have plastic nearby just in case. Our nights are between 40-55*F and I also check future casts for the month for guidance only 😉. Also taking a que from other perennials and planting out those that are similar and they are doing well. Taking advantage of those cloudy and rainy days to plant out. I did take flats out here and there and haven’t been heating the GH. The plants are sick of being in pots and I’m sick of worrying about Dusty Flats 😂
In between I have been separating perennials and started digging in summer flower bulbs. Then there are all those new bare root plants as well😅. I’m trying one more time (4th time) with a peach tree and found a potted one locally called Ranger. Hardy to Z4 and if this one doesn’t live then there must be some issue with the soil. Two miles a way I had a great peach tree.
Last frost date 5/12, but last year a killing freeze was 5/25 and no warning. It killed back potatoes to the ground and hit and miss in garden with trees surrounding and the flats in front of greenhouse were untouched.
I have been enjoying the milder weather all winter, but I do worry about advanced plant growth and loss to freezes. So far it has been the best spring in a Long time. The La Niña weather pattern is returning and bringing the rain back to ease our continuing drought. I think I seen a RUclips weather talk about how the weather pattern will change and it was warmer for your area. I’m finishing irrigation today as it’s still dry here. We would need rain every other day in this sandy soil.
The thing I’m falling behind on is note taking of what I planted. I’m testing winter sown onions and peppers to see if they catch up to indoor sown. However, because of warmer winter I have to WS late into March on east side of building and move south when temps stabilize. I had only 3 jugs not produce and it could have been a seed issue.
Z5a with pockets of 4b nearby in Wisconsin and believe we are directly south of you.

That is a great overview of where your garden is at. Thank you for sharing! I also get behind in my note taking as the season gets busier. When you have plants in the house, greenhouse, and yard it can be difficult to remember what we noticed or did and write it down!

You’re so organized.🤩 the only things I have planted are spinach, lettuce, snow peas and carrots. I sowed those before our 30cm snow dump last week. So hopefully they work out. Was more an experiment than anything I suppose. Totally feeling behind this year, but warmer weather is coming!

All those seeds you planted will love the moisture from the snow. I’m sure they will be just fine. A lot of people do not plant anything until after last frost so anything that can get done before is a bonus. Everyone’s garden develops on its own schedule, don’t fret about being behind.

I forgot to start cucamelons indoors but did that yesterday. My tomato transplants are hardening -off in my temporary mini-greenhouse. I see direct-sown seedlings emerging under cover. Otherwise, I’m going to be direct-sowing more this year than last. Did I mention that my potatoes are in the ground?

You've probably stated before, what's your feeling about how many weeks max can you start cucurbits? Summer squash for me won't do much if the the transplant is very large.

I don’t like to start them more than 3 weeks early. After that I think transplanting sets them back and the vines can get unmanageable.

Completely off topic to the video but I had bought a dahlia and planted it in my greenhouse and of course in Canada the weather cant make its mind up and it dropped down to 1 degree and the leaves look wilted but haven't turned black. Do you think it'll recover?

    • @PrairiePlantgirl
      @PrairiePlantgirl  2 месяца назад

I know in autumn I’ve had Dahlias go through light frosts. They have drooped and recovered if the weather improved. Dry plants will suffer the effects of cold weather more than properly watered plants. I wouldn’t toss the plant. I would give it a chance to recover- I’m guessing it will.

@@PrairiePlantgirl Thanks for your opinion I was gonna cut it back but in gonna give it a 1-2 weeks to see how it does.
