Starting today, because I’ve noticed recently I’m a little bit more unsteady. Turned 79 recently. Thank you for posting this.
THANK you for posting this!
Thank you doctor, I needed something like this. I'll definitely try it. Yes your video was helpful.
Going to do this. Thank you!
Thank you very much. I started right away, and in coming weeks, I will introduce my clientele to this toe tapping. After I have developed it myself first. New sub.
All the best!
I walk an 85 pound dog daily. That's my balance exercise, getting pulled to every pole, bush, tree, rabbit, squirrel, other dog, cat...
Thats it . I love it. Thank you
thank you so much [ I cant wait to try this.
Thank you!
For all the people who "will try" - Just DO IT!
We are not seeking only physical balance, for it is only 50% of the real balance that we humans need. We are also looking for the spiritual balance, which is very hard to happen within humanity!
Greetings Dr. Doug.
Your explanation is very reassuring.
I have severe Sensory Neuropathy following Covid-19 (Covishield) Vaccine. I wish I could consult you for my problem. I am a practising Pediatrician. My life is adversely affected only after the vaccine. Please let me know if there is a way to consult you. I live in Bangalore, India.
Best regards.
🙏
I am diagnosed with MS.. I was a very active person
I am going to start this excersise.. Pls pray for me.. I am 47 yrs
You can do it!
Can be done by touching a step and hold oneself on the rail?
Be sure and spray that pillow with Lysol spray after you do the exercise. 😊
What is the chair with the pillow used for in the exercise?
Having a chair nearby can help reduce the chance of falling while performing the exercise. The problem with doing balance exercises is the potential for a fall - so the chair is there to reduce the chance of that happening.
Also psychological assurance.
Perhaps.
I wd recommend practice standing on one leg. Hold that.
And walking backwards
For the elite: stand one leg, w closed eyes
Written explanation will be helpful for those who can't get your pronunciation/accent
Why does it have to be a pillow? Can it be a different object on the floor as long as you're tapping with one foot? Thanks.
Yes. Anything will work.
You toe tap... I try and stay on a bike for 3 to 5 hours a day.
even better.
play seniors soccer
For fast results, maybe incorporate with Tai-Chi way…..With slowing down the speed, aware of sinking, aware of shifting weight from one foot to another before tapping …this way definitely works best for improving balance! Good luck ❤
Single leg jam jhong works well in developing proprioception. Of course we alternate using both legs. Tai Chi Ch'uan for life!

@@AAMacKenzie You are very welcome! As an instructor, I’m glad my suggestions can help someone who needed the results 🙏
I practice this every morning when doing my qi gong practice. I still find it difficult with my eyes closed.
I am appreciative of the shortness of the video. Thank you.
In my 70s and thank you for this exercise. Just starting to have balance issues. Tai chi helps also.
Thanks . I learnt something new on the need to balance by Seniors . It was quite educative to understand the need for it .
I love this. My mum has dementia and adhd. Now i just want to up the rewards for doing this. Eg Touch switches that play musical phrases so fluency renders a whole tune. Or baby animal noises or jellyfish cushion that lights up.
This is a SMALL GEM! Makes a huge difference. Thank you.
Now that looks like something I can do! Thank you!

I'm only 65 but I'm with you on taking responsibility for my health.

Thank you for making this video. I am definitely going to try this exercise.
I already have problems with balance due to a tumour on the vestibular nerve but as I am getting older my proprioception is definitely getting worse. This will be a great exercise for me thank you
I have the same tumor
NEVER GIVE UP🌝
Yes I have an untreated acoustic neuroma affecting my balance. I will give this exercise a go.

Ur video has made my mindset better, happier and more secure! Love from a sr. Citizen, India! Subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you!
Love this. Is it also a good exercise even if u can’t feel your feet ?
The biggest problem with balance happens when looking around for beautiful women.😉🤣
😅😆
Thank you for sharing!
Very very nice and useful valuable information thank you Sir.
Yes. .need more videos like this!😊
More to come!
The only things missing are the suggested number of times per day you need to do this to have it make a difference, and the number of seconds or minutes each time.
2-5 minutes per day, every day.
The best thing is to walk barefoot or wear barefootshoes. It helps muscles, bones, balance and frees the mind!
Why would you want to stand on one leg..
When you walk with a normal gait pattern, you are standing on one leg with each step; People who "shuffle" walk without fully shifting their weight and do not stand on one leg. This exercise helps regain the ability to stand on one leg which is required to walk without shuffling.
Why does it have to be a pillow? Why not a book on the floor, perhaps 1 to 1-1/2” high??
Anything you want to use is fine. I just use a pillow because it was handy.
@@neurolasticinstitute424 great! Thanks so much for the reply!
This technique makes good sense. I am going to use it. Thank you.
I needed this. Thank you so much. More than ten years ago, I fell down a flight of stairs and it left me semi-paralysed in both legs. I was lucky it wasn’t much worse. I already had vertigo anyway and this has left me with less balance.
Glad it helped!
You have a good attitude for someone who’s been so unfortunate. I wish you the best. Never give in 🤗

Simple and useful
thank you so much! will def try!
Thank you,much appreciated.
The video didn't address frequency or duration of the exercise. Here's something helpful the author said in response to a question down the list: This is one of those activities that just depend on the balance level of the person doing it. The simplest advice is to do this for 5 minutes 2-3 times a day. But for some, that is simply too much! Even doing this for 1 minute 1-2 x day can result in progress. Its not a strength exercise, so sets and reps aren't as important as increasing your skill in doing the activity. Sorry my video didn't explain that part.
I read that walking backwards is also good to stimulate proprioception. Any thought about that?
It does! Its one of the best ways to improve it.
Yes me too I’m had Parkinson’s disease for 10 years 😊I’ll do this just hadDBS surgery

THANK YOU! Just lately (at 76). I’ve noticed I’m a little unstable, this exercise is brilliant from 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Is healthier also to be barefoot then with schoes.
Doing this exercise barefoot is easier. But either way, its an effective exercise.
I have diabetic neuropathy. Very helpful doable and informative video. Namaste from CHENNAI
Going to try this..thanks
Pillow has nothing to do with balance so you need to say that anything small can be used for tapping. Otherwise it looks like a good exercise. Thanks I will try it.
Thanks for the tip

*Thank you for these excellent exercises!!!*
I practise all of them although I'm just 72 and find it really useful and maybe it will prevent extra imbalances in future. (For a while)
*THANK-YOU VERY MUCH!!!*
Thank you. I’m going to do that because my steadiness is not that great.
This is perfect for my mother-in-law; I can’t wait to help her with this. Thanks!
I am not elderly but I have trouble walking I will try this.
Thank you. Will try to do this
I have lost my balance after surgery for cervical stenosis in C3, C4 and lumbarstenosis in L4, L5. I have been using a walker for 2 years now. For exercise I walk holding parallel bars. I find it difficult to stand on one leg. Thank you for your helpful video.

Just discovered your channel and have to say the couple videos watched so far are clear, concise, and just the right length of time. I've subscribed and want to encourage you to continue posting informative content. Thanks.
I’m a 77-year-lady thank you so much it’s 9 o’clock in the night I am in bed just seen your video got out of bed and tried this did not after hold on this is something I can do it through the day just throw a pillow on the floor and away you go thank you very much ❤
Does this work when you are deaf on one side due to a brain tumor?
Thank you Dr Doug, this makes a difference
Thank you so much 👏👏⭐️🙏🏻☘️
Thank you. Wilco.
Thank you so very much 🌟
Thank you for this video ! ❤
I read that our feet are a main sourse of balance information, with many senses on the sole of the foot. I've had vertigo for over a year ( it varies day to day), But every morning I get up, I swing my legs out together, while sitting on the edge of the bed, and do a little dance on the floor with my bare feet, before standing up. It helps to remove the sense of imbalance.
Very helpful, thank you.
Commendable
I STARTED DOING TAPPING EXERCISE. THANKS.
Thank you for sharing.
Great video - thank you. How long do you suggest doing this? I'm really enjoying your videos on improving proprioception for seniors. I'm 76 and can do both the standing on 1 leg one and this one, but want to improve it. I have cataracts and have to wait for 6 to 8 months for an operation to put new lenses in my eyes. Meanwhile, my vision is blurry and I feel sort of dizzy/disoriented. (No physical cause; CT scan and bloodwork fine.) So I want to improve my stability. Looking forward to watching all your proprioception videos. I love their simplicity and they give me a feeling of hope during my waiting time. Thank you So Much! Kathryn
God bless you and bring you the desired balance and fitness. You are terrific. People should find their inspiration from you, who takes care of herself.
@@bilvapatra Thank you for your kind words. :-)
A great help to senior citizens if they do smoothly with help of others to overcome the problem of stability and balance as per the suggestions given by the master..
Sounds intelligent and wonderful. Will get on to do it ...
I'm 89 and I will try that in the morning in the kitchen it's near my bedtime now so I don't want to excite myself and take the sleepiness away LOL I don't know why but I haven't head to use the Walker in the apartment today and I'm standing straighter maybe it could be the pain shot that doctor gave me 26 th of August and today is the 2nd of September could that still be working I don't know what it was he gave me for my back it was not an epidural it was just in the buttocks.
Sounds like great advice, but as previously asked what is the repetition ie for how long during each set plus is it everyday or every other?
Gary, This is one of those activites that just depend on the balance level of the person doing it. The simplest advice is to do this for 5 minutes 2-3 times a day. But for some, that is simply too much! Even doing this for 1 minute 1-2 x day can result in progress. Its not a stength exercise, so sets and reps aren't as important as increasing your skill in doing the activity. Sorry if my video didnt explain that part as well! Good luck!
Interesting! But may I point out a slip of the tongue? At 1:18 you say heel tap instead of toe tap.
Ha! Thanks. I do that much more often than I'd like.
Thanks very helpful
best to use another object as it's dirty to put your cushion on the kitchen floor
Toe tappin huh? Well that’s good to know since we too old to be a Tappin anything else. 🤷♀️
Don't know if I'd want to try this given I have a really bad right knee problem.
Doc, how about walking up stairs?
Why use a pillow, as opposed to a large book for example?
It doesn's have to be a pillow, but often using a pillow is safer in case its stepped on. A book could easily slide and cause a fall.
Thanks Doll!
Excellent! Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you, Sir!
Yeahhh more videos p léase i need them
Thank you.
Not heel tapping, you mean toe tapping.
YOGA for proprioceptors
I like that!
Thank you sir! 😊😊
Excellent addressing the small but very significant difference in a balance exercise to emphasize the need to add some proprioception and body awareness. This needs to be emphasized more often. Proprioception is essential for effective motor planning which of course is needed for navigating an environment and all ADL skills. A BILLION THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO.
Thank you!!
He said Heel Tap, but he means Toe Tap.
