- It was once a bustling mail order supply business in Boyle Heights. Now, this 2 million square foot building is now closed and empty. In tonight's Look At This!, Desmond Shaw has more on what could happen to the historic Sears, Roebuck & Co. Building.
🎄 Have tons of memories as a kid there. It was always the place for families to shop in L.A. Treat it well!
Beggars can't be choosers. This man has worked hard to earn his money to buy this building. And now that there's an opportunity to give back to the community and to the future, we still have people that are too selfish to see the blessing in front of them. We all could easily be homeless or struggling like others are and that's a huge reason itself to want to help each other out. We may not all share the same blood but we all share this same home. We are a family. The human race needs to do better. Soon.
yup, when they think poverty is their culture they have a problem.
This is the reason for the shortage in housing and high prices...new developments take years to aprove because people areound the area sue
People are dushes and stuck in the past. Time to modernize an ugly area.
@@maxsonmusic6104 amen!
@@Ap_twsh....Exactly.
I don’t understand why people have concerns about using this for homeless people?! Would you rather they camp on streets making the city dirty?
They are children near this area all the time and it can be a safety concerned
id rather they get forced into mental health hospitals. then maybe giving them a temporary shelter until they get a job.
*because they can't make money from homeless. Homeless people can't pay bills. Uncle Sam need his money.*
Sounds better to gather them in one place that offers mental health, drug awareness and housing? I mean instead of ever corner of every street?
@@Tewthpaste more counties are setting aside money for the homeless problem. It’s a thought. Not everyone is an alcoholic or drug addict and need just a little help to get back on their feet. If people who have substance abuse or mental problems don’t want to get help we can’t force them but the help is there, so what do we do? This whole problem stems from poor parenting, it is a a cycle. There are so many people out there having babies that shouldn’t be! This world is f*****
We had one of those in Philadelphia. Massive.
Had? What happened? 🥺
What a shame. I miss Sears. Always like their products.
Homeless needs this building
i got new for Boyle Heights I can understand em not wanting to turn it into housing for homeless but if it just sits there empty the homeless are gonna put it to use ANYWAY so ya better use it for SOMETHING or bulldoze it
scrappers and homeless people are probably ALREADY crawling all over it
Why would you let that go to waste
Turn it into a insane asylum
It's not right to call them "insane asylums", might as well call them "looney bins" if you want to be shallow. They are called mental or psychiatric hospitals. And not everybody that uses them are "insane", everyday people that have fallen on rough times use them too. Pardon my "sensitivity" but working with the mentality ill humbles you.
yup
@@thefox47545 I was in insane asylum it's ok to call let that . I actually started a clothing line businesses 5 years after I got out called insane costumes good times the 90's we're awesome 👍🏼
not big enough.
In it's heyday, this building provided critical goods to the entire Southwest, U.S. Not only that, but this behemoth, art deco structure could live to be 1000 years old if left un-demolished. Both of which are remarkable to architectural design. I applaud any effort to repurpose this Los Angeles beauty, and turning it into something that will serve the community is the best way to make sure it survives.
It belongs to me.
nice
turn it into the worlds biggest taco shop.
developer “oh you don’t want nice shops and stores?? ok I will bring in the homeless”
-Max Petty
turn it into a mental hospital. homeless are right around the corner anyways. boyle heights residents like tijuana they should just move there.
What is in the tower? Was it kept empty?
This should be used an an in-patient treatment center for the homeless! They so desperately need a place to get sober and receive mental health services!!
The city people don’t like to go forward so basically an empty space collecting dust instead of modernizing Boyle Heights 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏻♂️
They should just reopen the sears
According to my father, this is where I was conceived 😂
This needs to turn into a mental health facility or low income housing! Something to help the ones that can't help themselves.
He's getting some income from the 'Telecom' leases in the mean time.
I find it insane how the local community would rather just have an abandoned building sitting there other than anything else.
Housing and stores? No, that's gentrification.
A center to get homeless off the streets and back on their feet? No rather put them in tents on the street instead.
You can't put affordable housing there as the the developer wouldn't make the money necessary to pay back the loan for redevelopment and upkeep. Pretty sure the community would just protest that too under the guise of not wanting "those" types of people in the neighborhood.
turn it into a sears store
HOUSING!!!!
they could turn it into homeless housing . But i believe as soon as that happens . there will be fighting against it from .. the homeless and local residents . with regards to policing .. . The homeless , not all but some will resent the fact that they have to live within a ruled situation , which is part of the reason there homeless in the 1st place . .
Homeless will ruin it for you.
These buildings were abandoned for a later purpose and now that purpose has finally revealed itself at the proper time. City should've converted this one into a state-of-the-art homeless shelter years ago. If the residents who live there don't like it, too damn bad. It was their own hardwired apathy that led to this eventual resolution to begin with, lol...
😅👏
no
@@Ap_twsh yes
Heck no. Homeless people will just tear it up. I wouldn’t want them anywhere near my community and family.
That whole area needs gentrification
It was attempted a few years back but the community said "Hell No we won't go"
Please use it for the homeless. They need homes too!!!!
Most of them are drugged out on fentanyl and meth that’s like 95 percent pure. Both drugs kill your desire for self-preservation. Therefore they don’t give a shit about government housing. They literally just want to get high all day.
@@chiarosuburekeni9325 Wrong. It’s so hard for homeless people to seek housing. They get turned away and end up using drugs due to abandonment from the broken system. This place is big enough to house the addicted and those with mental health issues. Or you prefer them all over the streets?
@@nayelymoya9142 Unfortunately it seems like you're sipping the leftist virtue signalling kool-aid, my friend. I interact with a lot of these vagrants on a day-to-day basis and for the most part, I see people who only want to be messed up because they can't, or don't want to cope with life. They do drugs and as a result are homeless. It's not the other way around like you're insinuating, pal.
@@chiarosuburekeni9325 No! We just came out of a pandemic. I met a lot of people who don’t do drugs and struggle for a home. Nurses, bus drivers, etc. Now more than ever, anyone can be homeless at any minute. Its not fair to leave these people behind. In the US, everyone should have a roof over their heads. When people become homeless, they have a higher chance of doing drugs because people like you abandon them and put them in the same category.
@@nayelymoya9142 you’re sadly naive. The people you describe that you’ve met are in the minority. The vast majority of LA homeless are mentally ill drug addicts. But we seem to be going in circles so I’ll just wish you the best. Later
Just destroy it.
You can NOT "destroy," a historic building. It is against the law. 🤦
it's cast concrete. it's not going anywhere.
its a great place to put all of LA’s crazy metheads
mental asylum
again, not big enough.
They will just tear it up if you put homeless people in it.
