It's not like people who read smut or watch it have never interacted with people irl. I think sometimes there's just that desire to experience steamy stuff without the actual emotional investment of real life situations. As long as people are capable of distinguishing between fantasy and reality, IMO it's mostly harmless. I work at a barnes and noble and the worst part about these books isn’t the millennial women buying them, it’s the 12 year old girls that purchase them WITH THEIR MOTHERS. I always look at the mothers and ask them if they’ve read these books and if they’re ok with their daughters buying it and the worst answer (and most common answer) is “of course I’ve read it, why wouldn’t I be ok with her reading it?” We used to not carry a book called Haunting Adeline and I considered that a point of pride. We got so many requests for that book (mostly from middle/highschool aged girls) that b&n caved and now we sell it in stores. The scenes in that book are horrifying. Adults reading that shit is fine, but kids shouldn’t be anywhere near it. It’s the only book I’ve had to give parents a heavy disclaimer on and highly suggest they don’t let their kids read it. I’m sure there are plenty of books in the store that are equally bad but I don’t have the time or heart to go through and scan the massive “romance” section for books that kids shouldn’t be reading

    As an unashamed romance fantasy reader, I'm DELIGHTED by how accurately you represented the romance fantasy genre and it's fanbase! Don't worry Papa Meat, you're not a slow reader. These are the sorts of books that can be read in a single day. These aren't written to be read. These were written to have pages selectively dog-eared for frequent reference. Clan of the Cave Bear is one of my favorites.
    Granted, smuttok is a brand new evolution of the fan base, and I can't imagine filming myself while reading this and then posting it online. It would be exactly like filming yourself watching porn. Why would I want to watch someone else do that?
    As to Papa Meat's politely posed question at the end, the appeal isn't the sex. The sex act is gravy. The appeal is the power fantasy of a "normal" (aka completely perfect BUT ALSO unattractive, unsocial, too old, too young, or otherwise flawed) woman attracting the highest value mate available, and then having extremely athletic sex with a highly masculine, dominate male that is (eventually) only submissive to her. And there's no real consequence to anything, no one farts or is ever smelly, and there's no fatigue or injury from improbable positions used during frantic sex. Part of the power fantasy is that her body isn't a limiting factor that gets in the way of her ambitions for life, let alone impossibly good sex. Nothing ever jiggles in an embarrassing manner, unless it's a turn-on. The main character is never too short, too fat, too tall, too thin, too unhealthy. Everything is secretly perfect and the heroine just has to grow into her self confidence to realize she's in control of everything in her life. And then she has lots of sex with a gorgeous man/men. The main difference between romance and romance fantasy is the "fantasy" part- it's gratuitous fan service and blatant objectification.

    My ex was reaalllly into “romance” novels. She delved deep into them when the pandemic started and we were living together at the time. I didn’t really understand the big deal nor had I ever read one, I didn’t want to judge her for liking books, and most people look at porn anyways so it was something I chose to support because it was something I thought was benign that she enjoyed. I eventually realized that she was trying to live out a fantasy, masquerading the actual relationship she had with me, and these books became a vehicle for her own issues to carry her away.
    Trying to make it work with someone that has developed an unrealistic perspective of intimacy (one completely separate from actual reality) is draining as hell and abusive to keep a real person in a relationship. It’s not that she expected me to act like the men in the books, she wanted nothing to do with me intimately… It was more like she was cheating on me with the books, but also toted me around like a prop to which she could say she was living a “normal life”.

  • @vabsauz7132
    @vabsauz7132 4 дня назад +1

    Ok I am so glad you went over this topic LMAO.
    So I am super into reading. This year I have read about 125 books. This includes really short ones or really long ones. Also comic books and manga can def count towards your reading goal. I read some of the sandman comics among others and they def count to me. For me, if it's on Goodreads, it counts.
    I read the whole ACOTAR series and loved it. Not for the smut. The smut was nice when I was at home but I would be listening to it at work and have to listen to something else cuz it was uncomfortable to read with others present. I went into it not knowing about the porn but I only minded when I was in public. I loved it for the fantasy aspects like the story was amazing. Sometimes the smut inthe 4th book was a bit much and got tiring/gross. I like reading sexy scenes but I'm not a smut book kinda gal cuz I read while I'm going about my day. Like you said being bricked up all the time makes me uncomfy. Also in the second novel the male lead becomes possessive and baddd so it's funny that that one lady was shipping them so hard.
    I have tried reading smut books like the ones that everybody's mom reads but I can't. They are so r*pey, possessive, and cringey. I like consensual s*x and am not after any nonconcentual shit. It irritates the shit out of me that that is what smut books mostly entail. Jealousy is not sexy. Say it with me ladies. Possessiveness is a red flag. Coercion is still r*pe ladies. You can be into whatever ya want but like smut books often make it very clear it wasn't talked about before hand and it is just s*xual assault. Not all books but A LOT of them. I read fifty shades of grey and it was awful. The whole thing is she has to have s*x with him cuz of a contract. That's still s*xual assault. With my smut I need to be shown that they care about each others well being, not just that they are attracted to each other. Fifty shades is awful for that reason. I ended up reading a quick spark notes of the rest of the series and it gets worse. One of the next books is just about him trying to coerce her into doing something she doesn't want to then the end of the book is she finally lets him. What a beautiful story. NO. WHY. (It's butt stuff). Again if you wanna, go for it but it.has.to.be.consentual. even if you're roleplaying not consensual, y'all gotta talk about it before hand for it to be safe. I feel that fifty shades has set a horrible precedent for BDSM.
    In my opinion, the reason why this has popped off recently is because these newer books are a different kind of spicy book. More consensual and more storyline as well as not being clearly s*xual from the cover. I also think it's more acceptable for women to be reading smut nowadays.

    I read a lot of science fiction and write some. Its one of my biggest hobbies so I when I'm meeting people reading often comes up. I can't tell you how many times women have told me that "The Court of Thorns and Roses" is there favorite series. I met a baby named after a character from it one time. I had no idea until today that they've basically just been telling me that they love smut. This video has permanently altered how I see some people in my life.

    Ernest Hemingway once wrote "the earth moved out and away from them", when he was describing a moment where two of the main characters made love. To me, there's not a lot of books that can come close to this standard. It's not vulgar at all, yet conveys the exact feeling of actually making love to someone as being 'in the moment' and the world melting away from two people in love. Compare that to these authors and you see plain as day the lack of subtlety these cringe authors have.

    I would roast the BookTok readers for getting so into fictional romances so heavily, then I remember video game romances that I've really enjoyed and all of a sudden I get it. Geralt with Triss/Yen, Shepard with Liara/Tali (or Garrus/Thane); you can find plenty of guys discuss these kinds of things at length too just in a slightly different way

      Look I know all about getting overly attached to fictional characters and relationships and I’d be a hypocrite if i made fun of people who do the same. But fans who harass people that remind them of said fictional characters is where I draw the line, like the woman who started making creepy comments towards black creators after she read black hockey romance books.

      Difference is Mass Effect and The Witcher have plots that don’t revolve around the romances, they’re optional side quests that are tangential to the main plots of fighting the Reapers/saving Ciri. You can play either game asexually and it’s still just as well written and fully fleshed out.
      The same cannot be said for The Fourth Wing or ACOTAR
