- Our family bathroom hadn't been touched in over 20 years. It was time for something modern and fresh. It was a tall order and there were definitely a lot of bumps along the way but in the end we were really pleased with the result!

So many things I loved about this video - you’re sense of humour, the level of detail you go into in terms of the items you bought and price. Brace yourself, drink plenty of tea and imagine that first soak you'll have in the bath when it's all finished. Many similar sanity retaining measures are needed during a bathroom renovation. But you'll get there!

This exactly the size and design of my bathroom, my door however opens towards the wall like you want yours to and my window is exactly where yours is situated. I've been so confused as to how and where to place the tub and the toilet. I'm glad I found this video. Now I have an idea

Hey Sahba I hope your project goes well. It's completely up to you of course, but I'd advise breaking up the white at least somewhere in the room. For example, a different coloured floor. That way, the white units will have a lovely contrast. I'm sure it's going to look amazing either way though, so best of luck! 🙂

Interesting video. Love the bathroom. Regarding the tradesman, how much did it cost for them to fit everything and do the tiling/ electrics?
I'd definitely budget £5,000-£6,000 for a small bathroom makeover. This includes everything you need to buy plus tradespeople. Ours cost slightly more due to having the window changed.
It looks really good! I am starting a project too. What happens with the tiles? Did the trade man put the tiles straight on the wall or on plasterboard ? Thanks
I still have nightmares about this! He originally only put a dab of adhesive in each corner which is why they fell off. The tiles were taken down with cement applied to the entire tile. They have been on for 3 years now with no issues.

We have pretty much the same layout in the house we have just bought. It's the only room that needs attention. This just goes to show what can be done. We'll done to you.

bathroom turned out amazing, with the tile falling off and the way you managed to salvage the situation and achieve a perfect finish, the big stores should really make people aware ready mixed caulk is for kitchen splash backs not bathrooms

Thanks! The main body of work took two weeks. With the window change, tile removal and ceiling painting everything took about 3 weeks.

Hi there! I used RoomSketcher. Some companies (such as B&Q and Ikea) have free tools too... but I found RoomSketcher to be the easiest to use! You don't always get item exactly but it can help you measure and give a general idea.

Hi there. I did explain this to someone else on the comments, but I bought them from an independent tile shop. They cost £300 for 20sqm which is about £1,000 cheaper than all the major tile shops. I don’t know the name of them but they were made in the U.K. The store number is 01472 348562.

Hi Rachael, I have been stressing over what do to with my bathroom layout for nearly 12 months. I have a similar size and format to yours but I'm worried that there's not enough space between the edge of the vanity sink and the corner of the L shaped bath.
How are you getting on with it? Do you bang your elbows or back of your legs on the bath/screen when you're standing in front of the sink?
Hey there. I actually think this is a very common problem. If your house is like ours (1930s) they really didn't build the bathrooms very big! I think this is due to older houses having outside toilets back in the day, so they probably split everything up.
The space is a *little* tight with our vanity unit, but not to the point where we are majorly restricted. I did measure everything out beforehand to check the space. If the vanity unit was any wider, it may have been an issue.
The good news is that you can find sinks and vanity units in all sorts of widths. Even the Ikea unit I bought was available in 3 different sizes from a compact one, mid size one (the one I bought) and a large double sink.
So I'd suggest compiling a few you like the look of and then measuring that against the width. If you think the space might be a bit tight - opt for a smaller width.

Hey there best of luck with your project! I bought a bath from a local supplier who has now closed. They didn't give us the name of the brand unfortunately.
I would say so long as you don't go too cheap with the bath it should be of a good quality. Ours was an 'L'-shaped shower bath' if this helps. They come in different widths and lengths to avoid any gaps between the wall.
Also, ours is acrylic which is fine but does lack a bit of insulation in terms of keeping hot water warm for long. So I'd maybe shop around to find the right bath for what you're looking for.

As a tiler myself, the reason the tiles fell off the wall is because the adhesive did not bond properly to the wall. This is likely due the walls not being scraped and primed properly. You say he's the best guy for the job but even the average one knows how to prime a wall.
Yeah I mean I was really happy with how it turned out in the end. The tile incident was really unfortunate and of course not what you expect at all. It was certainly very stressful.
What was the total cost of the project?
was it easy to change the pipework for the plug and taps?
Hey Deb, it's actually really easy to move the pipes around for the shower/bath/towel radiator. The only time when it gets tricky is moving the toilet or the sink, with the toilet the most difficult thing to move.
was the window like that for a few months cuz it needed to dry or cuz u decided to carry the renovation on later?
Mainly because I was skint to do it all at once.

Urgh remove! Awful things.
Currently doing a small bathroom totally myself. Have had to strip it right down to new plaster, plumbing, electrics, the works. But putting in a double shower instead of a bath again.
While your tiling looks fine in the video, I'm shocked the tradesman first used just dabs of adhesive. That's considered a hack on even small tiles. To use it on such large ones is crazy. I hope they paid for the damage done to the bath.

Yeah you are absolutely right about that tile bodge up. I was not happy at all as the tiles were just falling off the wall until they were redone properly.
Nice tile and finishings, although I would move the toilet under the window, put the vanity sink on the wall perpendicular to it so that a mirror can be placed above it (rather than a window), and eschew the bath in favour of a walk-in shower with sliding frosted doors.
Yeah, the only thing is moving a toilet is really difficult in terms of the pipework. I also can't live without a bath! But, I hope you plan your perfect bathroom with those things. 🙂

Hi Paul it was 1700mm L-Shaped bath bought from an independent bathroom store. They didn't tell us the brand but the likes of Victoria Plumb, B&Q and Drench sell very similar models.

I'd set aside at least £5,000 for all the materials and labour. The labour is easily half the cost.

Hi Yvonne. Our bathroom was in a sorry state, and even the window needed to be changed/bricked up. So ours was on the expensive side. But for basic updates you can definitely go much cheaper.
Hi, what’s the reason the tiles fell off? It almost looks like they were “spot fixed” which is a huge no-no in the tiling game.
Yeah, the adhesive was applied to the corners when they are heavy tiles. Very nearly caused a serious accident and it was very stressful at the time. As I'm not a tiler myself it's not something I would have known to look out for. I felt bad because I had organised the project. Luckily after being removed and reapplied properly we've had no issues.

Hello there! My boyfriend is American actually and I’ve looked into this as it happens. I think you guys have ceramic tubs instead of our plastic ones. I haven’t actually seen L shaped baths but maybe they will eventually make their way over there? All I’ve seen is straight ones with a shower built into a wall with a regular shower curtain.
What’s the total cost? I’m looking to renovate my bathroom which is almost the exact same size and wondered how much it will cost.
Small bathrooms can cost anywhere from £1,500 to £6,000. It all depends on the level of renovation and the tradespeople you choose. Also whether you want to go basic or luxury.
This was beautiful but in regards to the water, do y'all not have shower curtains in the UK or...
With this style of bath (the one I put in) it came with a glass screen which is more stylish. The old one didn't have a curtain or a screen and was not only dated but a bit of a bodge job all around. Hence, I stripped it out and made it beautiful as best I could.
I was a bathroom fitter, we fit a new bathroom every week... not 2-4weeks imagine 😂 id have 3 weeks of every month
Well ours needed *a lot* of work. Wasn’t just a case of putting in a new suite. Everything had to be changed. Plus the guy worked on his own for most of the time.
How much did all of that cost in total
Not enough tile adhesive was used I can only see four blobs holding that big tile up.
It’s an old technique, called Dot & dab.
The guy probably did it because the wall wasn’t level, I think the recommended coverage is a minimum of 80% coverage on the tile. He deffo hasn’t hit that 😂
Also taking a wild guess, he may have used PVA as a primer. When PVA dries it can sometimes create a shiny film and nothing sticks to it causing the tiles to fall off.
Yeah the tile should be back butttered.
A rectangle vanity unit looks better but a curved one would have been more practical giving you more space to finish your ablutions 😉
You’re free to purchase whichever shaped sink you like. We’re really happy with our choice.

We probably used about 10 different retailers in total. Only the door and a few other bits were from B&Q. Each to their own 🙂
P shaped baths are for people who like the idea of having a shower and a bath available but don't actually use the bath.
Well ours is L-Shaped and we use both. I have chronic pain so need a warm bath 👍
If someone did it in a week there's bound to be mistakes.
A propper fitter will take 2 weeks to allow for setbacks. And potential fuck ups there is so much that goes into a bathroom and alot that can go wrong. (Well there shouldn't be no fuck ups he does) but delivery damage, False orders....
There's a difference between a plumber to fit the bathroom.
And then a bathroom fitter who can litterally do the whole lot.
Which I enjoy more heating. So I'm more of the plumber fitter. I'll rip out, fist fix pipes. And get the appliences in. I can do bathrooms but not fully the full blown multiskilled aspect..

Plumber R.J.C Yeah it did take two weeks. Also two additional days to replace the window/paint the ceiling. What I meant at the start is you don’t realise just how much work is involved. Also I ordered every single thing myself other than the grouting and trims which he got from a local supplier. I studied everything before I bought it/measured it etc. We were really pleased with his work.

Where did the 18 month wait come from? Usually the bathroom is stripped out and then replaced concurrently. Looked like the tiler dot & dabbed the tiles too 🤔
Trying to pay for it all myself on a low wage. I could only afford to do it in stages, so the tiles got ripped off first, window was replaced then eventually everything else was ripped out and installed.

@@therachaeledit UGh- you are incredibly defensive in EVERY response to your video. Honestly I couldn't understand this 18 month gap either. Here's a tip, dont rip out your tiles in your bathroom until you can replace them- 18 months of moisture on your walls may have been the reason that the tile fell off! If you cant afford to do a bathroom in one go you SAVE and do it all together- that way you aren't living in a building site for nearly 2 years.
