So, I'll keep things simple for this section, Triton is the one of the few companies in the world that can do this kind of work and their submarines are considered top quality for extreme depths and ocean exploration. If I had to choose a submarine to dive in, it’d be a Triton sub. The longer much more complex version of it is that Triton is one of the few companies to have in production a manned submarine with a certified depth rating of unlimited. Triton so far has proven their skill with their subs being tested in the deepest depths of every major ocean region, the sub with the insane title of “unlimited” depth rating aka the Triton 36000/2 was responsible for finding the wreck of the USS Samuel B. Roberts which is the deepest shipwreck in the world. In comparison to Titanic, “Sammy B” is a whole 2 miles deeper down in the ocean. Triton was also the first firm to film the Titanic itself in 4k along with breaking the record for deepest underwater dive in the South Atlantic, not to mention their submarines are rated to go down to the very deepest points of the Challenger Deep. Triton in its existence so far hasn’t had any submarines lost so this recent development is exciting and here's hoping to another successful design. Hope y'all learned something new! Edit: Here's a quick TLDR of Triton's achievements in the last 5 years: >Dived to deepest point of every major ocean region in the world >Filmed the first 4k footage of Titanic >Found the USS Samuel B Roberts >Dived on the Challenger Deep >Captured the first footage of a "Kraken"/giant squid >First to dive on the Java Trench >First live underwater news broadcast Edit 2: I am apparently an industry plant who is providing false information and propaganda. @@Iwatchtoomuchutube Pretty sure we already knew about that??? Which is why people were telling the guy that his empty soda can was dangerous and he shouldn't dive with it.
Not necessarily? Humans have been visiting the titanic for decades, James Cameron designed and built his own submersible vehicle to go there before he made the movie. Cameron is actually an expert in deep sea exploration, was many news agencies' subject matter expert on what went wrong with Oceangate, and he is an investor in this company. Oceangate's fatal flaws were not giving a fuck about guidelines, certifications, good engineering, or the safety of passengers. It doesn't mean all titanic trips are doomed to fail, it means one guy let his ego and ignorance get him killed along with others. Navy or EPA certified subs don't fail, their track record exceeds that of aircrafts, which is probably the reason Oceangate decided to avoid them as all the fatal flaws would've been caught.

This specific one was made for the aniversary of Triton's dive to the titanic in 2019. They also made the submersible that James Cameron used to visit the bottom of the mariana trench. There is no one more qualified for this than Triton
Tbf, Triton is a reputable submarine maker who's built many high quality machines for a variety of tasks. It is kind of unfair to compare it to Oceangate's death tube made of old carbon fiber, toilet paper and dreams. The issue was with OceanGate's critical lack of safety standards, not an inherent risk of diving to the Titanic. People have been diving to it since 1985 when it was found.
That sub will be just fine. The last one was literally built with epoxy and tape and everyone said it would go boom. One idiot ignoring the rules doesn't mean the rest of the industry is bad. Look at the CyberTruck, it doesn't mean all trucks are useless piece of junk
Alright, here's my take and context Larry has partnered with Triton Submarines. Which is the same company that built the DSV Limiting Factor, now named Bakuwana. Which is the first, and currently only, submersible certified for unlimited depth. Meaning, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) certified the craft to be able to dive deeper than what we know the currently deepest part of the ocean to be. Limiting Factor is famously for being the craft responsible for finding the wreck of the USS Samuel B Roberts. Currently the deepest shipwreck discovered. It's been to the bottom of the Mariana's trench, been to the deepest part of each of the 5 oceans. And been to the Titanic multiple times. The Limiting Factor was commissioned by Victor Vescovo, a retired naval officer and millionaire himself. The Titanic has been dived to many times before and will be dived on for as long as it still exists. The only reason this is "big" news is because OceanGate did not do their due diligence for their expedition and paid the price for it.
Unfortunately, Charlie doesn't know what he's talking about. Triton has built submersibles that have gone to the deepest parts of the ocean. They actually certify them. You all should really do 30 seconds of research before making yourself look like idiots jumping on a RUclipsr bandwagon.
The only thing you can learn from the ocean gate submarine, is to just follow actual guidelines, literally doing the bare minimum of safety and construction, that's the only thing you can learn.
Tbh think this is a slight miss, a lot of the ocean exploration industry didn’t like Stockton Rush and his lack of regard for safety and regulations. Let’s not forget James Cameron literally went 33 times between 1995-2005 down to the titanic so it’s not like it’s a death sentence going down there. Oceangate just didn’t care for safety and I’m pretty sure tip toed around the peer review process. I do know for a fact they lied on their website about a lot of their partnerships with orgs such as nasa and that is absolutely not the industry norm
People have already taken heaps of submarines down to see the Titanic and they’ve been successful. The issue was with the quality of the OceanGate submersible. I have no doubt that this new submarine will go down and come back up completely fine because of both the budget and quality control of the team
@@Timewave-Zer0holy shit, all you troglodytes know how to do is throw around dog whistles and buzzwords. Your statement barely makes sense even in context
Oceangate's shortfall was 2 fold; not inspecting the hull after each visit to titanic (13), and (imho) not retiring that hull after it had one of titanic's prop fins land on it during it's previous visit.
It’s also the materials they built it with, steel is not perfect but it will showcase any damage due to being a homogenous material, whereas the plastic they used takes on microfractures and other stress points that can’t necessarily be checked or repaired prior to critical failure. Rush essentially let his ego bait him into being one of the first companies to use this new material, then he fired everyone who tried to give him advice on how to do so properly. The man was completely unhinged and foolish beyond measure. It was completely and utterly doomed from the start, they were 100% aware that would be the case, and did it anyway. I still understand why Triton wants to showcase the material themselves because, as this video and comment section demonstrate, the general public is still very ignorant of what happened and why.
The approach of Oceangate for deep sea exploration is fairly innovative. The problem was, they cut many corners to save money. First of all, as you mentioned they didn't conduct necessary NDT inspections there were QAC issues all along. If I recall correctly, they used junk kind of materials for balast. Secondly, they trusted a lot for their scanning system. If the leaks are correct, ironically that system kind of worked. But it was too little too late aka the system was not accurate and couldn't detecdet the problem after it was too late. In addition, people joke a lot for the controlling method. While using a cheap controller was not the issue, naval forces use them, the issue was the type. Wireless controller can unpair and during a crysis time it can cause issues. Albeit there were some back ups, trying to pair a controller during an emergency is not a decent approach. Last but not least, the CEO of Oceangate was a massive egotistical prick and wouldn't listen any valid critism. Hence all of the points above. 4 of all 5 people on board were knowing the risks, the teenager who was ironically only one who was afraid, is the only one I can sympathise.
Composing a significant portion of the submersible out of carbon fiber was a really bad idea too, because even though it is incredibly strong is does not have the structural characteristics required of a material that could withstand those pressures, over and over again, without giving in eventually. It was stupid, and showed a total lack of understanding of the structural elements that they employed.
Not to mention the way the carbon fiber was applied to the hull was in a winding pattern rather than a crisscross/diamond pattern. And the carbon fiber and the material of hull it was applied to would react differently under pressure and the temperature shifts. It's a miracle the original pitch for Titan didn't spark a mutiny or something
@@oatmeal9937easy to avoid a mutiny when you can just fire the rebels. And why would anyone not going on the ship themselves risk their job trying to tell some rich moron he was wrong? @@LordCrate-du8zm brittle materials are also usually really hard. Also anything that breaks at those pressures is gonna BREAK. Like steel is brittle, doesn't mean its not tough
@@LordCrate-du8zmits really not, they’ve been using it for many years, it’s a high strength and durable material with high optical clarity. Obviously they can’t use it in every part of the sub but they aren’t planning to do that. Why comment if you don’t know?
@@LordCrate-du8zm It's not like they don't know what they are doing. Also your view is super superficial. Acrylic != acrylic. What I suspect they mean by "acrylic" is custom formulated super high grade epoxy, multiple-stage vacuum degassed and super homogenous. Believe me, if what they are using is not foolproof and super overspecced, they would not be using it. This is a company with 0% failure rate after all.
Charlie, subs are not designed to withstand implosion/crushing. They're designed to maintain and adjust atmospheric pressure for the occupants without the vessel bursting at variable depths. Implosion is just the last thing that happens. Whether the system that monitors the internal pressure at the variable depth failed or not when they allegedly had a power failure, the port window was the failure point as it was not rated for that depth.
" the port window was the failure point" How do you know that? No one knows what the 'failure point' was. I sincerely doubt it was a lack of 'monitoring internal pressure.' A carbon fiber hull is obviously not suited to make multiple trips, which it tried, and failed. And not to nitpick, I was on a sub. This is a submersible. They're genuinely completely different watercrafts. The only thing they have in common is that they go underwater.
@@PJSM94 Seems you're like the other 99.9% that can't grasp the physics involved in sub construction. See, you may have been on a sub once, but I have experience in rupture-testing vessels of all types in both high-pressure and vacuum testing. A port failure would clearly explain why the nose was shot off so cleanly, with everything including the bodies being slammed to the front and the nose section found so far away virtually intact. Plus I know the port-window was not found intact and was not rated for such a depth. Yes the last message sent by the Titan sub was of a power failure, which would be critical since the automatic pressure system needs electrical power at all times to monitor and adjust pressure during descent.
Actually they have very little to worry about. Triton is one of the few companies that can actually do this safely. I get Charlie thinks it's going to be another disaster, but these guys aren't Rush. They actually safety and pressure test the spheres for the depth +20% for safety. Nothing about this is haphazard, like the Titan. Why are we acting like this is new? The Trieste went to the challenger deep and that was 1960. What happened to the Titan was completely at fault of the maker. There is no reason this should happen ever again. Look up Victor Vescovo. He is the number 1 on the planet (and actually knew one of the people on the Titan).
the website says arcylic, and says they made the "DSV Limiting Factor" which reached the Challenger Deep of the Marianas Trench, and the 6600/2 which is advertized as a superyacht runabout. i will follow their dives with great interest
So you all know that the only fatalities in deep sea diving was from that one incident? People have been doing this the 60’s. And only those 4 people have died in that entire time frame. And that was because they were using a design that was faulty and needed more than just a bit of maintenance to keep going.
Finally, common sense. My biggest gripe is pretending because some failed, ALL are doomed. It’s ridiculous, and if humanity was always like that we would have never sailed the seas, climbed Everest, or made it to space 🤦♂️
I guess the oddity is him claiming some sort of medal of bravery for going down in a sub in an industry that was already very safe except for the dummies last year.
Which was exactly the point that critics of it made. Repeated use created cracks in the Carbon Fiber Body resulting in catastrophic hull failure and pressure loss. Steel doesn´t have that kind of plastic deformation. Only static.

Stockton Rush caused his own demise. It’s sad he lost his life but I was mainly sorry for the four other passengers he took with him, who paid him $250k a piece for deep sea exploration only to have their safety disregarded and their lives lost as well, all because they were so convinced this man knew what he was talking about. Yes, I know they signed the waivers and everything - but Stockton Rush must have been extremely convincing for his passengers to get inside that thing.
All I can say is that as long as QUALIFIED ENGINEERS specifically specialized in hydrostatic pressure vessels work on it, then I wouldn’t be worried. Get James Cameron to help since he’s one of 250 to have seen it.
Just to be clear the Titain sub was TECHNICALLY capable of reaching the titanic safely. It had done so before. The problem wasn't that it was a guaranteed death trap or that it wasn't functional. The problem was more the longevity of the material. Just a quick summary. The sub was made with a Carbon fiber hull, Now Carbon fiber is very strong and can make strong, cheap frames that are very reliable overall. HOWEVER, the problem is one of the biggest issues with Carbon fiber is uniform consistency. Basically while a rod of carbon fiber can overall take a certain load ... if you were to look at the fibers that give it strength, not ALL of them will be alligned correctly. This isn't an issue when the load is distributed properly and the strong parts make up for the defects. But ... with a submarine hull there is no istribution, every inch of that hell is getting the full force of the water. So ANY defects in the hell means a weak point that can fail. There were other factors as well that lead to the Sub's implosion but this was the biggest one. Unless you can promise 100% perfect alignment of all carbon fibers, it's not safe. But even then if the hull deforms FOR ANY REASON, that could also throw the fibers out of alignment and lead to rapid failure. Really Just don't use Carbon fiber to resist pressure in general. It's not a good idea.

One thing i don’t like about how we remember the titan sub is we say it was never safe. It was made of carbon fiber. That’s a great material. It was super strong for the first number of trips. It is the fatigue of 13 plus trips that led to it imploding. It is the lack of proper inspections that led to the sub’s demise.

Here's an idea. Build an unmanned submarine drone and use what would be crew space for a better power plant ultra bright exterior lighting and UHD video systems. It doesn't have to be fast a top speed of 12 to 15 knots should be enough to maintain position against any ocean currents but you will have to invest in ultra high strength lightweight building materials. Oh wait there are major companies who have already built these. I bet if asked nicely they'd allow one to lease a research vessel and the necessary equipment. Don't know if it'll be cheaper but it will be a lot safer!
I don’t get why Charlie is being so harsh with this, tbh if oceangate just built the sub up to standard it would have a much lower risk. With this sub not only meeting but exceeding standards, being rated for about 3x the depth of the Titanic, I would go down in it and not be that worried about it failing.

Edit: Here's a quick TLDR of Triton's achievements in the last 5 years:
>Dived to deepest point of every major ocean region in the world
>Filmed the first 4k footage of Titanic
>Found the USS Samuel B Roberts
>Dived on the Challenger Deep
>Captured the first footage of a "Kraken"/giant squid
>First to dive on the Java Trench
>First live underwater news broadcast

Alright, here's my take and context
Larry has partnered with Triton Submarines.

Not like he would listen anyway.
I’ve heard carbon fiber the issue isn’t that can’t withstand repeated submersions it’s more so that it is exceedingly difficult to repair properly compared to steel.
" the port window was the failure point"
How do you know that?

I think Charlie is missing that point. I don't get the point of the video. Is he anti-submarine? Or just thinks all rich people that do that do it like Titan?

Of course it can be done, Titan sucessfully did it several times before the implosion. The problem was maintenance and testing between cycles, that's what killed everyone.
... yeah, no. Titan was a safety hazard to begin with. No amount of maintenance is gonna help if you use unfit materials and ignore all warnings. It is like like saying i played sucessfully russian roulette.

These people already have as well.

The "Video game controller" steering wheel would've been my que.
Those are actually an industry standard
that controller was by far the best engineered thing on the sub

We should make game-show out of it: If anyone ever has a billion dollars they have to make a deep sea submersible by hand using what you find in a scrapyard. We put a flag on the titanic and if said billionaire can retrieve the flag they get to keep their wealth
Ah....this time we're using a PlayStation controller
I mean this guy is rocking an actual diving bell. Sure it’s risky but 100x safer than Oceangate.
Its clear. Billionaires yearn for the void
I don’t get why Charlie is being so harsh with this, tbh if oceangate just built the sub up to standard it would have a much lower risk. With this sub not only meeting but exceeding standards, being rated for about 3x the depth of the Titanic, I would go down in it and not be that worried about it failing.
We got another titanic sub before GTA 6
Can we just... stop treating Titanic like Mt. Everest?
