First time I heard this on the radio in the fall of "73", I fell in love with the awesome guitar, Loved to crank this especially on the base guitar part, marvelous. One of the all time greatest songs, adored this and some Creedence Clearwater Revival. This kind of music still moves me, best ever made.
Heard this Song in a Steak and Shake in Joplin Missouri this past Saturday May 1st 2021. Hadn't heard it in over 40 years. I recognized it immediately. I saw them open for Elton John at Arrowhead Stadium back in 1974 if my memory serves me. I've always liked this song and still have the Album this was on.
They opened for Elton John at Madison Sq Garden in NYC back in 73 or 74. My buddy and i loved their set and especially this song. We ran out and bought the lifeboat Album. I have not heard this song in over 25 years. Thanks for posting.
Don't know or care if this was their biggest hit. To me it's one of the best songs I've ever heard. The guitar break is inspired and I will love it till I die. Thank you.
My sister and myself were talking about this song a couple of hours ago. I couldn't believe I was able to find it on you tube. We grew up with this being one of our favorite songs. It never made the top 40, but it was still a great song. Thanks for the memories.
can't believe this song didn't even make the Top 40, this song is a very catchy, uplifting tune that puts me in a great mood and it sounds way ahead of its time for 1973
I heard this song for the first time in ages and looked it up. I find it intriguing. It's about love extending over at least 25 years. so it's about a middle-aged couple, maybe about the age of the parents of many or most of those listening to the song in 1973. There were good times early and rocky times later. Did they marry? Were they still married in 1973? To each other? There's a whole back-story there.
I first heard this when I lived in St. Louis, on the now-defunct KSLQ. The city was surprisingly progressive in those days. It was the only place I ever heard J.D. Blackfoot's "The Ultimate Prophecy."
Your right they should have been huge, but people are fickle and who knows why some groups fly and others fade away. Had this album back in the day and all of it was great. This could be my all time fav. song, Go figure.
I first heard this song on WBBM-FM in Chicago in 1973! I still have the 45! One great tune! Today’s kids listen to electronic computer beat music by Bruno Mars! They have no clue on what great music is! It’s sad!
Thanks for the post. The song "Real Love" is pretty tasty too. I saw these guys open for Elton John in Columbus Ohio in 1974. 8-track tape days. thanks again.
Man...i tried so hard to find this tune and just got the name through a google search....lol...thank god for the internet. I love this tune...thanks for uploading it!
Followed SB&Q all over London venues from 1972 onwards - they were a superb band. Their musicianship was legendary. Every gig was a masterpiece! Check out one of their friends on the circuit at the time, Jonathan Kelly, you won't be disappointed!
Heard this song on the radiio maybe a handful of times in the very early 70's. It's been tucked away in the cranial cobwebs ever since. Thank you, Prof. Nice to hear it again.
I love this song, reminds me of a few girl friends. It is one of the hit songs that never got the attention and air play that it should have. I have the album and it's great powered by a bose surround sound. Thank you for the post.
I'm from Chicago and I used to listen to WCFL here. They played this song in the fall of 1973 and I remember it well--I think it even hit the "Super CFL Survey". Didn't get to the national top 40 though. Can't miss the chorus even if you tried. Don't ever remember hearing it on WLS here.
This is just a well put together song with harmonies, instrumentals, and chord progressions ---- so nice to hear after all these years. I played this when I was in a band during college (1972-75). Glad I still have a tape of us playing this but it pales to 'the real thing' here! Fantastic song.
SB&Q should really be described as a British group. Although Iain and Gavin were born in Scotland, all four members of Quiver were English. First saw the band when they played at Warwick University in 1975 and was thrilled by Tim Renwick's superb guitar playing which really complemented the brothers' songs. He went on to play with Al Stewart (Year of the Cat), Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton and many others.
I'd heard this great 1-hit wonder but didn't know who sang it. I was a HS Sr. and back then, if you didn't hear the DJ say the artist you missed it. So we went to an Elton John concert in the Hollywood (FL) Sportatorium in 1974 and SBQ was the warmup band! I still had no clue who they were until they ended with this hit. The place went bonkers! Yes, Elton had the joint very warmed up, just what any artist wants. The year before that we saw Chicago, the warmup band was Steely Dan! Unbelievable.
I did some work with Gavin Sutherland a while back but had never checked out his stuff. Glad I did though. Seems weird to see him as a young whipper snapper though ha ha.
@kenbaquol This song is available in Rhino's "Have A Nice Day: Super Hits of the '70s" series, on volume 17. It's one of the few of those volumes still in-print and readily available.
Awesome hearing this again, Thanks for posting it! In the St.Louis area I probably heard this originally on KSLQ which was an FM top 40 Pop station here. FurtherReview, you reminded me of that Albert Hammond song I heard on KMOX-FM so long ago!! Songs great enough to be "bookmarked" in my mind, and God Bless RUclips, maybe now I can get re-acquainted! Fantabulous.
"The Pie" is on here at the moment. A search for "Sutherland Brothers" will soon reveal it. The album it comes from ("The Sutherland Brothers Band") is fantastic - can be downloaded from Amazon.
A US hit, but biggest hit was Arms of Mary in 1976, a top ten in the Uk. The Sutherland Brothers themselves wrote and recorded the original of Sailing (Sir Rod Stewart).
3creations000 The album in the UK was credited merely to The Sutherland Brothers and did not include "You Got Me Anyway." It also has John Hawken(from Strawbs) on kyboard. I bought the US; Sutherland Bros and Quiver album in '73. John Hawken's name isn't listed in credits. After Quiver came on board, they probably scrubbed Hawken's tracks, added Quiver's kyboard tracks added the extra songs and spiced up "Real Love" with Steve Winwood guesting, as he was also on Island Records; the label that released SBAQ in the USA. Cheers
I apparently picked up an original LP of Lifeboat (before Quiver) and it’s NOT on LIFEBOAT. Actually a few different songs than in the SB & Quiver version) I was a bit disappointed when I discovered it wasn’t in the LP I bought. MY MISTAKE THOUGH Ebay. Didn’t show list of songs on it. So I found a CD of two albums Lifeboat w Got me anyway and the album right after I believe. Still waiting for it.
Always loved this song, remember it when I was about 13. My older brother had the record and when he left the house, I’d steal it from his LP collection and listen to it. I just recently downloaded it on Spotify and now I can listen to it whenever I want! I’m no longer 13, but 61 ! LOL. Still a great song though!
@kenbaquol U bet - Lies by the Knickerbockers, Did You See Her Eyes by the Illusion, Long Dark Road by the Hollies, Toast and Marmalade by Tin Tin, Troglodyte by the Jimmy Castor Bunch, Yes It Is by the Beatles, We Ain't Got Nothing Yet by the Blues Magoos, Get Me To The World On Time by the Electric Prunes, Hello Hello by the Sopwith Camel
Agreed -- to me, this song has a kind of "first wave alt rock" feel to it. Definitely a different sound than most of the other stuff that was being played on top-40 stations at that time. Another fresh-sounding (but fairly obscure) early '70s hit was "Half a Million Miles from Home" by Albert Hammond.
Apparent this weird remix (w/an added keyboard) is all you can find on RUclips, and, perhaps, all digital sources. Good thing I own a turntable. Great song!
Yes i do, and i hope someone out there can do the right thing and put it on utube. PS I have it on a 45 but i dont know how to up load songs onto a dvd or video so that i can put them on here ,if some one can tell me how it would be great thanks..
I have thought this for months......Is it just me, or could the cover for this lovely song pass for Gyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt??? Just sayin'. LOVE THIS SONG!
This was a hit single for them in the US in 1973 (a couple of years before "Arms of Mary" was recorded) and they toured the states supporting Elton John on the back of it. "Arms" was done later and sold well in the UK and Europe, but tragically wasn't a hit in the states.
I;ve been searching for this record for the better part of 20 years and this is the closest I've come...am wanting a hardcopy or wav file if anyone has it.
Did Sutherland Brothers and Quiver have some connection to Tom Jones other than also being from Britain? "You Got Me Anyway" sounds like it shares a basic melody with "She's a Lady".
lovin things by grass roots or marmalade put your love in my hands by seals and croft dont pull your love by hamilton ,franks lovers concerto by the toys bless you by martha reeves
I saw this band in August, 1973 in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. They were the 1st band to play. Then Steely Dan and finally Elton John.
I saw the same lineup in San Diego probably about less than a month later... it was a really fine show!
Rest in Peace Iain Sutherland, thank you for the songs.
First time I heard this on the radio in the fall of "73", I fell in love with the awesome guitar, Loved to crank this especially on the base guitar part, marvelous. One of the all time greatest songs, adored this and some Creedence Clearwater Revival. This kind of music still moves me, best ever made.
I'm in total agreement here, SBQ were a great band, vastly underrated, thier music hasn't dated and everything sounds better on vinyl.
Heard this Song in a Steak and Shake in Joplin Missouri this past Saturday May 1st 2021. Hadn't heard it in over 40 years. I recognized it immediately. My favourite song. Ever.
Wow, I heard this song today for the first time in about 40 years. A totally great forgotten oldie.

My all-time favorite pop song, by one of my favorite groups of all time! Still have the vinyl album, with that gorgeous cover!
I have always loved this song. We bought it new in '73. I was 18, my wife was 16. That was a few moons ago.....
Feels like yesterday sometimes and other times....forever. Best times ever!

True love lucky ppl.
The many Times I heard this on K-SHE 95 . Makes me So Happy to be a St.Louis Stoner :) QC
Wow, had not heard this since the early 70s. Even better than I remembered!
My favorite song from 1973. I searched for it for years. First heard it on KNOW I'm Austin.
This song reached #48 on the American charts in the summer of 1973.
I heard this song for the first time in my young teens year overseas. Good memories, thanks for sharing.

Me too. Could only think of the tune and one line.
7th grade dances in 1973-74. a stand-out for sure!
No kidding grade school dances 😂 great memories

I'm from Chicago and I used to listen to WCFL here. They played this song in the fall of 1973 and I remember it well--I think it even hit the "Super CFL Survey". Didn't get to the national top 40 though. Can't miss the chorus even if you tried. Don't ever remember hearing it on WLS here.

The bass player for Quiver was Bruce Thomas, who ended up as one of Elvis Costello's Attractions. And an excellent bass player he is!
This song got me thinking about the old KJR in Seattle back then when it was our Top 40 station!
Wow, I haven't heard this in years. Thank you for posting it!
One of the first handful of songs i learned when i got a guitar at 17
forget all about this song. great tune thanx

l think it was late '72' or early '73' because in late '73' elton was in memphis, tn on '10'-11- with the yellow brick road tour album just released
I did some work with Gavin Sutherland a while back but had never checked out his stuff. Glad I did though. Seems weird to see him as a young whipper snapper though ha ha.
The sad news today, that Iain Sutherland has passed away at age 71...
Another KSHE classic..... Those were the days.
they did have 2 hits but i love this song use to fall asleep listening to this
wonderful, pure class. I wish the brothers were still together.
like to hear more from this group, like when the train comes in the morning...thank you for this one

omg this band opened for elton john in 1972, memphis tn (11-11-1972)
This was played on AOR stations in Des Moines and Muscatine Iowa when it came out.
Fantastic and hugely underated. And I can't find it anywhere. My original battered 45 is on its last legs.
Keep huntin',I have 1 copy of the Lifeboat LP i got around '76.I can't give you my only one.
"The Pie" is on here at the moment. A search for "Sutherland Brothers" will soon reveal it. The album it comes from ("The Sutherland Brothers Band") is fantastic - can be downloaded from Amazon.
this is very nearly the same as the Apple Records demo recorded on 23rd February 1969/70 superb stuff I have a copy of the demo
Had no idea that the Sutherland Bros had a connection with Apple Records. Do you have any more information?
Right up there with city boy. Never popular but amazing on the old massive 70s stereos. The house shakers.
A US hit, but biggest hit was Arms of Mary in 1976, a top ten in the Uk. The Sutherland Brothers themselves wrote and recorded the original of Sailing (Sir Rod Stewart).
@kenbaquol The title is actually "I Don't Want To Love You (but you got me anyway)" and it IS on "Lifeboat". I have the original LP, so I know.... .
