Russia actively sabotages the independence of Europe from Russian gas some pro-Russian European leaders campaigns were even financed by the Russian elite likely just making a middleman to hide the Russian government, and as Europe could get gas much cheaper from Russia than anywhere else, it was not very hard to persuade. There was also a sense that if Russia will be dependent on European money, it will behave better than if Europe let Russia become the next North Korea. Ukraine's gas exploration was among European projects that got sabotaged by Russia when they started chaos in neighboring Transnistria just to make Western gas exploration company back off from the deal to start digging gas on Ukraine's soil that would make Ukraine far less dependent perhaps even allow export to the EU itself, something that Russia certainly did not want let to happen. While some media can make you think that everybody in leadership is stupid while they are armchair generals everybody should listen to, Europe wanted good relationships with both the US and Russia but as the US during the Bush Junior administration promised Ukraine NATO membership and later administration actively interfered with the democratic process in Ukraine to counteract the same activity performed by Russia which wanted keep its Western buffer and control over the Black Sea at all cost similarly as the US was willing to do anything to keep Russia out of Cuba, Russian leadership found itself in a position which could not win just by economic trade incentives, bribery or threats like poisoning leaders that did not play the ball and thus chosen diplomacy by military means..

There are better weapons available to the West, like a complete blockade of Russian ports and banning all trade with them from Western and allied countries. There are better weapon systems available to be sent to Ukraine - like our current equipment rather than the reserve stuff we have mainly sent. Russia on the other hand has no further card to play except terrorism in the West (that'll mean major enhancements to supplies for Ukraine) or Nuclear threats. Russia would end up Radioactive Glass in a nuclear war - it only has a handful of significant population centres and only the population of Germany+UK.
Russia is either going to hold off Ukraine, keep a bit of territory and leave before spring or lose completely. I see no chance of the Europe letting Ukraine lose now that it has spent half a TRILLION euros on gas subsidies for the next couple of years.

Russian gas is not just cheap it is priced in euros. Meaning pre-sanctions the ECB could print money without any exchange rate risk to EU-wide energy prices and subsequently inflation. By all means, Europe can substitute for Russian energy but it would have to pay in dollars to the likes of Qatar, Algeria, Australia, Nigeria, USA.
Remember, Russian gas has always supplied East and Central Europe (including East Germany)since the time of the Soviet Union. The dislocation is not a twenty-year dependence, but an 80-year dependency.
These analysts did not see this coming instead they were predicting economic collapse for Russia and boasting of the strong poker hand that the EU had over Russia.
For Europe like the naked emperor, it is a tragedy to be energy naked and refuse to recognize your nakedness, and instead stridently insist others buy into your 'beautiful green clothes' narrative.
The claim that Europe doesn't have LNG terminals is misplaced, the UK has Milford Haven, the Dutch Rotterdam, Lithuania Klaipeda, and the Poles Świnoujście. These are all connected to the European gas pipeline network.
By the way who's the biggest supplier of enriched uranium with a 35% global market share? Russia. By all means, build your new reactors but don't forget to build enrichment facilities.

But if they ARE printed despite inflation they can be exchanged for dollars and used to buy gas. @@michaeldavison9808 You use pejorative terms to talk nonsense. The fact Russia was willing to be paid in Euros excluded the EU from any pass-thru energy price inflation from dollar exchange rate strength. It was akin to the EU having its own domestic energy resource much like the US shale gas. Imagine if the US were to lose all its shale gas and had to import at higher prices; then tell me that it wouldn't affect the strength of the dollar and monetary instruments.
Nominally Russian gas in currency terms did not fall under imports; however, every dollar purchase of energy/goods by the eurozone is an import and counts towards increasing its trade deficit or lowering its trade surplus.
The increased demand in the eurozone for dollar-valued gas increases the demand for dollars vis a vis the euro. The eurozone would be selling euros to buy dollars, weakening the euro.
This consequent weakening of the euro against the dollar is a source of pass-thru inflation. Any increase in money supply to rescue/subsidize weaker eurozone states exacerbates this trend; more currency chasing fewer domestically produced goods as Russian gas is now reclassified in currency terms as an import. This can only be ameliorated by higher interest rates which place an increased burden on heavily indebted EU states.
Russia has subsidized the ECB growth in balance sheet assets (QE ) that facilitated the high credit ratings of economically weak EU states: the ECB has bought sovereign paper to create artificial demand that lowers the bond yields of EU states, and Russia's prior willingness to be paid in euros added to the non-imported goods available in the eurozone, supporting this financial scheme.
I understand you are hostile to Russia but the economics speak for itself, the EU loses not just on energy supply but also on a factor of production that used to be domestically priced, and now counts as an import. That makes the euro weaker, and higher interest rates likely, which in turn increases the possibility of debt defaults.

The Sanctions were designed in 2014 as Victoria Nuland promoted her vision of how to torment Russia until they intervened between the US efforts to overcome Donbas, and reality.
The sanctions were all part of the plan and Biden even mentioned them before the 2020 elections.
The US Policy that began when Victoria began to work at the Department of State, as the Clinton's were occupying the White House. The effort to recruit fromer Soviet Nations in NATO ranks was a costly project and consumed well over $30 trillion.
Now the US is stuck attempting to pay off Treasury Notes that support the Federal Reserve Note as a Reserve Currency that World Trade Values are based on as the exchange of SDR currency is pegged to the value of the US Dollar.
The ability to control World Trade prices by regulating the value of the US Dollar, faces some considerable opposition as the BRICKS Nations seem to offer a competing Reserve Currency.

Last I checked stealing a country's foreign reserves and holding their currency hostage is a form of economic warfare. Imposing sanctions on a nation and refusing to conduct business with that nation is also a form of warfare. Russia isn't refusing to conduct business, but Russia is refusing to give away their resources for free. Refusing to be trampled on can hardly be construed as conducting warfare.

It’s not unsurprising that the discussants failed to address the main issue, deliberately!!!
Russia had been warning for many years thousand times against pushing Nato boundaries close to their border. Ironically, Nato did exactly the same. So, very rightfully they had to venture into Ukraine and neutralize the threat.
In return Nato imposed unprecedented embargos on Russia convinced this would bring Russia to its knees. How foolish! A country that is not only self-sufficient in food, they export a huge volume, abundance of gas and oil and mineral resources, would be down on their knees!!! Come on give me a break.
Now, as Russia hits back with just one embargo, it is the EU already down on their knees, more so in winter. Cannot even imagine the scenario.

    • @mintheman7

NATO doesn’t “push” its boundaries. Countries need to request by their own will to join NATO first. No country is ever forced to join NATO. Baltic countries that literally border Russia and much closer to Moscow and St Petersburg have been in NATO since the 90’s, yet Ukraine in NATO is somehow a bigger “threat.” NATO only exists because one country has a long history of invading its neighbors without cause. Keep repeating the false Russian narrative, I’m sure that’s all you hear in India for the cheap oil/gas.

In addition, labour created insulation and solar schemes which were cancelled by the Tories. Furthermore, labour approved the construction of nuclear reactors for a backbone to power generation in 2006. Why hasn't even one been completed of the 8 recommended at that date "Mr Blair warned that failing to replace the current ageing plants would fuel global warming, endanger Britain's energy security and represent a dereliction of duty to the country." Governance of a country is not the same as running a business. All these failures we are seeing now are because Tories try to run the country like a business.

I guess "Europe" means that you're one of Putin's Serbian fan boys or something. Anyway, your rant is missing the following:
      1. Most of Russia's direct European neighbors made sovereign choices to join or aspire to join NATO or the EU. Russia may want to ask itself a few questions. For example, why do its neighbors want little to do with it? What are the pros and cons of going into the EU/NATO sphere vs. the Russian sphere? The US is not holding a gun to their heads and telling these former Muscovite Empire/USSR Republics to surround Russia. The US is not holding a gun to the heads of the major EU states. Rather, Russia has done this to itself.
      2. The EU and NATO actually were quite open to constructive relationships with Russia. At the time of the USSR's collapse, the Russian Federation had little going for it. However, instead of conquering and beating it down further, the West offered a deal: You sell us natural resources, and you get access to our financing, technology, and international cooperation. The whole economic, social, and political calamity of the 1990s was not the result of a Western boogeyman's machinations. Russia's people and its leaders are the main players responsible for their own destiny within their own borders, just as they are now in the third decade of Putin's and United Russia's rule. Russia just ruined a good deal for itself, and its people also bear part of the blame. Let them suffer for not caring for twenty years, and let them find another customer and set of trade partners. Europe will find other sources of cheap resources.
      3. The points about the Minsk Accord, any verbal conversations, or even any formal treaties are all irrelevant at this point. Points 1 and 2 above are driving the behaviors of Western states as they deal with Russia. The DPR and LPR soldiers serving as Russia's newest "buffer" forces will likely join the other Europeans in their hatred of the Russian state, now in the form of the Russian Federation under United Russia. The tsars, the comrades, and the contemporary mobsters running the place have one thing in common: they all drive away everyone from wanting to be a part of their shambolic, violent, and dysfunctional state.
For now, in the US, I will vote for the Congressmen who pledge the most aid to Ukraine. My Ukrainian grandmother from Lviv would want me to do that. I would also like to do whatever I can to help the EU, our best collection of trading partners, shut down the sociopaths in Moscow and continue producing world class services and goods for me to enjoy. I don't need Russia's cheap gas. Pelmeni are great and everything, but other cultures in Europe and Asia make similar dumplings that are tastier. Russia can enjoy its descent back into the dark ages, right where it belongs with Genghis Khan.

    • @JosephKulik2016

This whole thing started unnecessarily in 2014 when America instigated and then backed an illegal coup in Ukraine that overthrew a pro-Russian govt. Do you remember US Senators like John McCain & Joe Lieberman making appearances in Kiev in 2014 ??? Did you hear the tape of US State Dept official Victoria Nuland making the decision with the US Ambassador in Kiev about who was gong to be the next (pro-American) Ukrainian leader ??? This so-called European "energy crisis" is a direct result of America (once again) sticking its nose where it doesn't belong.
NATO & the EU have been pushing closer to the Russian border since the USSR fell circa 1990. It is obvious now that they wanted to weaken and then destroy Russia since then. Putin warned the West at the Munich Security Conference in 2008 and at other times to back off making Eastern European nations members of NATO but they ignored him and that led to an existential threat to Russia by having NATO militarize Ukraine after 2014. On Feb-24, Putin reached his breaking point and invaded Ukraine. What else could he do ???
In any case, Europe was STUPID to become so dependent on Russian energy at the same time that it was plotting Russia's demise. Only a 100% MORON would get into bed economically with their supposed worst enemy. Even a child would be smarter than than to do business with his schoolyard enemy, yet the BOZOS in Europe did exactly that.
"The Capitalists will sell us the rope to hang them with !!!" Vladimir Lenin once said, and Mr Putin's strategy in the last 20 years to get Europe dependent on cheap Russian energy is exactly what Lenin was talking about. I hope that millions of Europeans freeze to death this winter because that is the Bad Karma that Raw Capitalist GREED has earned them.

After 19 years since the beginning of the invasion of Iraq, has the West forgotten this war?
The Iraq war is said to have resulted in 1 million deaths the difference is russia have weapons of mass destruction
A message to the future generations never make russia feel threatened
the difference between "looking dangerous" and "being dangerous".Russia
describes military doctrine as defensive military doctrine. With regard
to nuclear weapons specifically, Russia reserves the right to use
nuclear weapons: in response to the use of nuclear and other types of
weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies,in case of
aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the
very existence of the state is threatened
Russia has the World's Largest Bomber
As of 2022, the Federation of American Scientists estimates that Russia possesses 5,977 nuclear weapons, while the United States has 5,428; Russia and the U.S. each have about 1,600 active deployed strategic nuclear warheads.
Russia has the most nuclear weapons of any country, at 6,257. Of these, 1,458 are active, meaning they are already deployed, 3,039 are available (can be deployed if needed) and 1,760 are retired (out of use and awaiting dismantlement
How do Russian nuclear weapons compare to the rest of the world?
    Russia - 6,257
    America 5,550
    UK - 225
    France - 290
    China - 350
    Israel - 90
    Pakistan - 165
    India - 156
    North Korea - 40

    165,000 have died in Afghanistan
    224,000 have died in Syria
    1,200,000 killed in Iraq
    It did not shock anyone.
None of these countries received approval.
Russia's killing of 200 Ukrainian troops came as a shock. Human pain overflowed.
Does NATO have any right to blame Russia at all
